• Powershell's import-clixml from string

  Is there any way to run import-clixml cmdlet on a string or xml object? It requires a file path as input to produce ps objects and can't get input from an xml object. Since there is convertto-xml cmdlet which serializes ps object into xml object, why isn't there a convertfrom-xml, which would do the opposite? I am aware of System.Xml.Serialization.XmlSerializer class which would do just that, however I would like to stick with cmdlets to do this. Is there any way to do this with cmdlets (probably just with import-clixml), without creating temporary files?

• Do I have to release modifications made to a GPL v2 CMS?

  If we use a CMS that is covered by the GPL (v2), do we have to re-release the source code of the CMS if we make modifications to the core? The GPL v2 states: The GPL does not require you to release your modified version. You are free to make modifications and use them privately, without ever releasing them. This applies to organizations (including companies), too; an organization can make a modified version and use it internally without ever releasing it outside the organization. But if you release the modified version to the public in some way, the GPL requires you to make the modified source code available to the program's users, under the GPL. The grey area for me here is the part that states "if you release the modified version to the public in some way" - does displaying a website to the public count as "releasing it to the public"? What about if a custom plugin is written which integrates with the CMS - are we required to release the source? Does this count as a modification?

• ASP.NET MVC How to call a secured page from a windows app?

  Hi, I have a MVC app that has forms authentication enabled. The app allows printing of invoices. I have an external app that converts html to pdf. How can I call the secured page from this pdf converter app so that some security remains? The PDF converter app just requires a URL. One thought was to create a HttpHandler for an extenion of say .print and pass a public key in the URL qureystring that can be validated by the MVC app. Any ideas on this? Malcolm

• xquery expression to return a link text only if it contains within it a specific string

  I want to extract some links from a XML document (links are in same format as on html pages). Now for eg a link is "http://xyz.com/start/tyu/a.html" and another is "http://ert.com/tyu/b.html" while a third link is "http://asdf.com/ghjk/c.html" From the above 3 links (which I have with me using a for clause in a FLWOR expression)...I want only the links which contain within them a string "tyu" to be selected-- I thought of using substring for this, but substring requires start and end positions to be specified- whereas in my scenario, I dont know at which position the desired string will be. How do I do substring matching in such a scenario, i.e. where exact position for occurrence of substring, is not known? I can use XQuery 1.0 for this purpose. Finally, I want to extract the link URL, as well as link text...

• Cross-platform SOA framework

  I'm looking for a good cross-platform SOA framework that preferably works with several programming languages like C++, Python, and C#. I recently learned about Thrift, but that doesn't seem to work with MSVC from the documentation I've read and requires the use of Cygwin or MinGW to even compile the Thrift compiler. Does Thrift work with MSVC and if not, are there any alternatives that would meet my needs? Such as being able to generate C# and Python bindings and work on Linux, Mac, and Windows. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

• How do I run JUnit tests from inside my java application?

  Is it possible to run JUnit tests from inside my java application? Are there test frameworks I can use (such as JUnit.jar?), or am I force to find the test files, invoke the methods and track the exceptions myself? The reason why I am asking is my application requires a lot of work to start launch (lots of dependencies and configurations, etc) and using an external testing tool (like JUnit Ant task) would require a lot of work to set up. It is easier to start the application and then inside the application run my tests. Is there an easy test framework that runs tests and output results from inside a java application or am I forced to write my own framework?

• replace values in form.data when form fails validation

  Hi I have a form field which requires a json object as its value when it is rendered. When the form is submitted it returns a comma seperated string of ids as its value (not a json string). however if the form does not validate i want to turn this string of ids back into a json string so it will display properly (is uses jquery to render the json object correctly). how would i do this? I was thinking of overwriting the form.clean method but when I tried to change self.data['fieldname'] I got the error 'This QueryDict instance is immutable' and when i tried to change self.cleaned_data['fieldname'] it didn't make a difference to the value of the field. • Open a file with su/sudo inside Emacs

  Suppose I want to open a file in an existing Emacs session using su or sudo, without dropping down to a shell and doing sudoedit or sudo emacs. One way to do this is (require 'tramp) C-c C-f /sudo::/path/to/file but this requires an expensive round-trip through SSH. Is there a more direct way? [EDIT] @JBB is right. I want to be able to invoke su/sudo to save as well as open. It would be OK (but not ideal) to re-authorize when saving. What I'm looking for is variations of find-file and save-buffer that can be "piped" through su/sudo.

• Discovering maximum packet size

  I'm working on a network-related project and I am using DTLS (TLS/UDP) to secure communications. Reading the specifications for DTLS, I've noted that DTLS requires the DF flag (Don't Fragment) to be set. On my local network if I try to send a message bigger than 1500 bytes, nothing is sent. That makes perfect sense. On Windows the sendto() reports a success but nothing is sent. I obviously cannot unset the DF flag manually since it is mandatory for DTLS and i'm not sure whether the 1500 bytes limit (MTU ?) could change in some situations. I guess it can. So, my question is : "Is there a way to discover this limit ?" If not, what would be the lowest possible value ? My software runs under UNIX (Linux/MAC OSX) and Windows OSes so different solutions for each OS are welcome ;) Many thanks.

• ASP.NET JavaScript File Embeded In DLL With GZIP

  We have several fairly large JavaScript files embedded into a single script resources DLL. This is then consumed by multiple projects by way of a reference and page includes via the ASP.NET script manager. This keeps things nice and neat within our ASP.NET pages and requires very little work to integrate into new projects. The problem is that some of these script files are quite larger (approx 100KB) and take time to download. By running minify on them before embedding this is reduced down a lot (around 70KB) but not enough. What we would like to do is GZIP the files before they are embedded. However, just gzipping the files causes syntax errors as the content is not unzipped. There is a content type "text/javascript" applied in AssemblyInfo when the resource is embedded but we can't find a way to specify content-encoding. Is there any way to make this work without having to write a httpmodule/handler (which would mean changing the config for all consuming projects)?

  I'm hoping people have some ideas to help solve this problem. I am developing a C# ASP.NET website and the client requires an online form that users will fill in and submit. OK, so far so good..... Imagine, say, a form that you fill in on paper - they normally have a distinctive look specific to the company and will be filed, quite possibly as a legally binding document. I need to have an online form that when submitted emails the client with something they can print out and will look exactly like their printed forms. As this is web based, I think the option of capturing a screenshot are out the question, so I'm wondering how best to approach this? Even if I just had a form that captures the data presented how I want, how could I translate this data into the view they want? Any ideas and suggestions greatly appreciated.

  For example, i have a column named EmployeeName. Every time a user changes/fix his name, i need to keep a count. If he changes his name twice, then count is 2. Also, i need to store the time of every change employee makes on EmployeeName e.g. if the name essentially is James and time created is 9:00 AM and then employee changes to John on 11:00 AM, i need to preserve this new time and new value as well as the previous one which is James at 9:00 AM.   When working remotely, our team only has access to our source code by remote desktop into our office PCs so we never really work in offline mode. Does a distributed version control system like Mercurial or Git still give us advantages over our current centralized Subversion set up? If so, what are they? Are there any drawbacks or pitfalls?   In the MVVM pattern for WPF, handling dialogs is one of the more complex operations. As your view model does not know anything about the view, dialog communication can be interesting. I can expose an ICommand that when the view invokes it, a dialog can appear. Does anyone know of a good way to handle results from dialogs? I am speaking about windows dialogs such as MessageBox. One of the ways we did this was have an event on the viewmodel that the view would subscribe to when a dialog was required. public event EventHandler<MyDeleteArgs> RequiresDeleteDialog; This is OK, but it means that the view requires code which is something I would like to stay away from.

• Proper way to have an endless worker thread?

  I have an object that requires a lot of initialization (1-2 seconds on a beefy machine). Though once it is initialized it only takes about 20 miliseconds to do a typical "job" In order to prevent it from being re-initialized every time an app wants to use it (which could be 50 times a second or not at all for minutes in typical usage), I decided to give it a job que, and have it run on its own thread, checking to see if there is any work for it in the que. However I'm not entirely sure how to make a thread that runs indefinetly with or without work. Here's what I have so far, any critique is welcomed private void DoWork() { while (true) { if (JobQue.Count > 0) { // do work on JobQue.Pop() } else { System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(50); } } } After thought: I was thinking I may need to kill this thread gracefully insead of letting it run forever, so I think I will add a Job type that tells the thread to end. Any thoughts on how to end a thread like this also appreciated.

I would like this "continue" button to only be enabled once all the fields have content in them else it will remain disabled. I wrote a function that is called everytime a field status has changed however I don't know how to enable and disable the dialog button from this function. Any ideas?   The argument to my function f() must implement two different interfaces that are not related to each other by inheritance, IFoo and IBar. I know of two different ways of doing this. The first is to declare an empty interface that inherits from both: public interface IFooBar : IFoo, IBar { // nothing to see here } public int f(IFooBar arg) { // etc. } This, of course, requires that the classes declare themselves as implementing IFooBar rather than IFoo and IBar separately.   How can i get the LAN IP-address of a computer using Java? I want the IP-address which is connected to the router and the rest of the network. I've tried something like this: Socket s = new Socket("www.google.com", 80); String ip = s.getLocalAddress().getHostAddress(); s.close(); This seem to work on some cases, but sometimes it returns the loopback-address or something completely different. Also, it requires internet connection. Does anyone got a more accurate method of doing this?

  I'm attempting to use CouchDB for a system that requires full auditing of all data operations. Because of its built in revision-tracking, couch seemed like an ideal choice. But then I read in the O'Reilly textbook that "CouchDB does not guarantee that older versions are kept around." I can't seem to find much more documentation on this point, or how couch deals with its revision-tracking internally. Is there any way to configure couch either on a per-database, or per-document level to keep all versions around forever? If so, how?

• How do you keep track of what you have released in production?

  Tipically a deploy in production does not involve just a mere source code update (build) but requires a lot of other important tasks like for example: Db scripts (tables, query..) Configuration files (differents from test\production) Batch to schedule Executables to move to the correct path Etc. etc. In our company we just send an email to a "Release email address" describing the tasks in order, which changeset need to be published (TFS), which SP need to be updated, db scripts and so on. I believe there's not a magic tool that does these tasks automagically in order, rollback included; but probably there's something better than email that helps to keep track of releases in production. Do you have any tools to suggest or practices to share?

• Questions about use lib for perl

  I use use lib "./DIR" to grab a library from a folder elsewhere. However, it doesn't seem to work on my server, but it works fine on my local desktop. Any particular reasons? And one more question, does use lib get propagated within several modules? Two situations: Say I make a base class that requires a few libraries, but I know that it needs to be extended and the extended class will need to use another library. Can I put the use lib command in the base class? or will I need to put it in every extending class? Finally, can I just have a use package where package contains a bunch of use lib, will it propagate the use lib statements over to my current module? <-- I don't think so, but asking anyways Thanks in advance!
