• RHEL 6.x on Rackspace Cloud and Dedicated hardware experiencing Redis Timeouts

  I just recently set up a mixture of RHEL 6.1 Rackspace cloud hosts and RHEL 6.2 dedicated hosts using Rackconnect. I am experiencing intermittent Redis timeouts from within our Rails 3.2.8 app with Redis 2.4.16 running on the RHEL 6.2 dedicated hosts. There is no network latency or packet loss. Also there are no errors on any interfaces on our cloud or dedicated servers or on the managed firewall from Rackspace. When Redis timesout, there is nothing logged within redis even though it is set up to do debug logging. The only error we receive is from Airbrake saying there was a Redis timeout.   I want to be able to generate the system activity report every 30 seconds or every minute and store in a file and use it for diagnostic purposes on my VM. So I give an output file for the sar command and read it using the "-f" option. But I only use the CPU utilization and network utilization part of the report and so rest is all that I don't want to save (waste the space in the disk to store these reports). Also the sar files that are generated are all binary. Is there a way to collect these stats for the CPU and network utilization alone? and so save almost 2/3rds the space on the disk?

(y,n,.... d ...)" for each file, I sometimes answer d (diff) to see the changes, but then it's not easy to scroll the diff buffer because the cursor is on the minibuffer. Scrollbar does not work. C-M-v works, but if I try to back-scroll by pressing C-M-- C-M-v, Emacs just says "Type C-h for help". How do I scroll the diff buffer in such cases?

  I have this line in my .vimrc, which means "when I save a .rb file, run it through ruby -c" (the ruby interpreter's error checking). autocmd BufWritePost *.rb !ruby -c <afile> When I save that file, I always see output at the bottom of the screen, so I get used to it and start ignoring it. What I want is to only see output if there are errors. I can see that when there are errors, after it says what they are, at the bottom, it says "shell returned 1." How can I modify this line so that it only shows a message if the shell returns 1? Is there a way to conditionally surpress output from a shell command run in vim?

  At my work place, passport sized photographs are scanned together, then cut up into individual pictures and saved with unique file numbers. Currently we use Paint.net to manually select, cut and save the pictures. I have seen Sony's Cybershot Camera has face detection. Google also gives me something about iphoto when searching for face detection. Picasa has facedetection too. Are there any ways to autodetect the faces in a document, which would improve productivity at my workplace by reducing the time needed to cut up individual images.   I have yet another small issue that annoys me everyday in our Terminal Server environment. It seems when logging into Terminal Server users report the initial File | Open or File | Save As from within an application such as Word, Excel (2003 edition) is very slow to display the actual dialog box. The dialog appears quickly but it is whited out (sometimes displays not responding in title bar) and unresponsive, it then sits like this for about 20-30 secs before popping into life and displaying all the folders etc. The second time you go to save or open a file it loads almost instantly. Any suggestions or similar problems out there?

• How much HDD space would I need to cache the web while respecting robot.txts?

  I want to experiment with creating a web crawler. I'll start with indexing a few medium sized website like Stack Overflow or Smashing Magazine. If it works, I'd like to start crawling the entire web. I'll respect robot.txts. I save all html, pdf, word, excel, powerpoint, keynote, etc... documents (not exes, dmgs etc, just documents) in a MySQL DB. Next to that, I'll have a second table containing all restults and descriptions, and a table with words and on what page to find those words (aka an index). How much HDD space do you think I need to save all the pages? Is it as low as 1 TB or is it about 10 TB, 20? Maybe 30? 1000? Thanks

  i have a text file that contains 10,000 url's with a unique number i want to save the file as. Each line has a 10 character code, then the URL of the image to retrieve. Right now the first 10 characters will always be what I want to save the wget image as. Edit This is being done in a windows environment.

  I have a user asking about viewing PDF files in Internet Explorer. When she clicks the file link on a website, IE prompts her to save the file, which she then has to open to read. What she's not seeing in the prompt is the ability to open the file without having to save it, or, just opening the PDF automatically. She and a few others are having the same problem, while a majority of the user do not have this problem. All of the users have IE 8 and Adobe Reader 9 installed. I've verified that Adobe Reader's "Display PDF in browser" option is enabled. What else should I check?

  I have a PSD file with all icons in separate layers as vectors. I would like to save them in different sizes to use in iPhone, iPhone4 and iPad. I tried Files Scripts Export Layers to Files That took about 15 minutes to save each layer while the computer was overheating from the work. Tried with two different computers, one with CS4 and the other with CS5. Same result. And that doesn't allow me to set sizes. Seem like most icon packs, like pictos, glyphish and iconsweets are distributed in this way, in one PSD file. Is some easy way to get them out of the PSD and into PNG files?

  I plan to buy a 1.5TB hard drive soon. I would like to know which file system to choose from when I'm gonna format it. With FAT32, there is a limitation concerning the maximum file size (4GB) that bugs me since I might save large files such as DVD images which are over 4GB. On the other hand, NTFS allows me to save larger files, but seems less compatible with other OS than Windows and is also proprietary to Microsoft. Are there other alternatives ? Can you give me your advices ?

What is the best practices or best way to present the presentation so it gets delivered the quickest and best quality to users? Some ideas I've thought of are: Somehow compress the file (.wav audio files, images) into a smaller presentation and save it as a Power Point Show (pps) so users can download it and use the free Power Point viewer?   I have a few hundred images of 30000 x 10000 pixels in size. Each image has lots of text (rendered as pixels) on it. I'd like to translate all text to another language. I speak both languages, and it's fine for me to translate each phrase manually. I need an image editor which can open these images quickly (faster than Inkscape, which needs about 60 seconds to open such an image), lets me zoom and rotate by 90 degrees, lets me erase (i.e. change the color of a selected rectangle to solid white), lets me add text, and lets me save the file as quickly as possible. I'd like to minimize the time I have to wait for the software to load, render and save images. Which is the best program for that on Windows? On Linux?

  Having a MacBook Pro 13" I find myself trying to maximize the screen real estate constantly which have led me to put the dock at the right hand corner of the screen. Now in an attempt to save a few more pixels I decided to give autohiding of the dock a go and ran into a problem that have plagued me all night... When you toggle the switch to automatically hide the dock you get stuck with a small delay before it appears when hovering the edge of the screen. I have learnt that this is one of the many design principles Apple have put in use. In this case it appears to be their mission to save me from seeing the dock those few times when it's not intentional to touch the screens edge. In Windows there was a way to tweak this setting to have the menubar appear instantly by altering some registry value. Is there some way I can do this in Mac OS X?

  Notes: OS is windows 7, browser is latest firefox. After saving a zip file to the desktop, Windows Media Center opens up. I looked around its config settings but could not find anything related to zip files. How do I turn that off? Also, don't know if this should be a separate question or not: Unless I right click save link as... for zip files, I don't get a firefox dialogue asking what to do with the file (Open/Save). The files get saved to some place like c:\users\namegoeshere\appdata This only happens on the win7 computer. I looked around in firefox's settings for saving files, and I do have 'ask me where to download...' enabled. I can get more exact path names when I get home.

• Unable to edit/delete/move /etc/my.cnf - Permission denied

  I am trying to edit /etc/my.cnf as root user via ssh and I get following error while trying to save it I ma making changes to my.cnf as I want to tweak some values in my.cnf to meet Magento requirement like changing key_buffer_size= to higher value (128M). I assigned the value 128M to key_buffer_size= and tried to save it and then got an error. "Error writing /etc/my.cnf: Permission denied" I cant even restart MySQL successfully. [root@flourish ~]# service mysqld restart Stopping mysqld: [ OK ] MySQL Daemon failed to start. Starting mysqld: [FAILED] I can even delete or replace it with the fresh one. I tried uninstalling MySQL and re-installing but nothing worked. Permission -rw-r--r-- and Owner/Group root/root I hope there is some answer to this problem.

• How can I create an appointment on a shared Outlook calendar

  This isn't as basic a question as it may seem. Hence all the descriptive text... I and my team use Outlook 2007. I have my own personal calendar and also I share a calendar with others in my team (which is mainly used to notify everyone of vacations etc.). The others in my team are NOT technical people. I would like to create a shortcut or template that any of us can use to create an appointment in the shared calendar. My initial though was to create a new appointment, but rather than actually put it in the calendar, I would save it as an Outlook Template (.oft) file. Once created, I would send this to my team and tell them to put it in their Templates file and put a shortcut on their desktop. Then, if they want to put a vacation in the shared calendar, they just double-click on the shortcut, change the dates etc. and then save & close it. However, when I do that, it doesn't save the fact that it's an appointment on the shared calendar - it just adds the appointment to the team member's personal calendar. There doesn't seem to be a way to specify a calendar in the template. I've also tried this by saving the template as a .ics or .vcs file, with no better luck. Additionally, if a team member adds an appointment to the shared calendar, other 'sharees' aren't notified, unless the appointment is actually created as a meeting and the other sharees are explicitly invited. I found this online (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/keep-everyone-informed-about-time-away-from-the-office-HA010209819.aspx) which APPEARS to say that what I want to do isn't built in functionality (since it shows a bunch of steps to go through. I'd PREFER not to have to add this stuff to everyone else's personal calendar directly. So... Is this possible to do, natively (i.e. directly in Outlook)? Would a Sharepoint calendar make more sense and allow this functionality? Is there a way to do what I want which will allow the other team members to be notified? Like I said, I'm looking for as simple an interface as possible - these people aren't going to want to do much more than open something and change dates. Additionally, they're probably not going to have any fancy software on their PC's, although they will be up to date with Java and (maybe) .NET frameworks. Also, before anyone gets funny, yes, this has to work with Outlook 2007, as it's a corporate standard - we're not able to change that, even though e.g. Google Calendar would do this wonderfully.
