In some cases(mostly scrum projects, i guess), i get "The Webpage can not be found". In other cases- Unable to refresh data for a data connection in the workbook. Try again or contact your system administrator. The following connections failed to refresh: TfsOlapReport Any help would be very much appreciated.

• people_dl_import shows millions of records

  We have a situation now on prod in sharepoint 2007 based intranet platform and it shows thousands of records under people_dl_import category with format spsimport://?$$dl$$/domain1/domain2/domain3/ Also import was not stopping and added millions of records in database and was on verge of disk full. On other servers like dev we have very less data in this category and format is also like spsimport://doaminname?$$dl$$?... which is good and has only 6000 rows and in prod its 2 millions Crawled under people_dl_import category. I need to know the cause of this garbage data and how to fix it. I tried resetting content source and I will do full import in this weekend to see if this garbage data gets cleared. Any idea on cause for thiss issue?

• Self Hosted Dropbox Alternative?

  Does anyone know of any self-hosted Dropbox alternatives? We have a need to share files/folders between staff and partners (small scale) and for various reasons we'd prefer to host it ourselves. Sharepoint seems a little too focussed on "check in/check out" and things like webdav/ftp seem a little kludgy. In an ideal world something where you (as an IT person) can setup an area, make a user "owner" and from there they can add their customers would be great. Windows or Virtual Appliance would be ideal.

  Hello, I'm having the following problem. I'm installing SharePoint 2010 Beta so I need to activate the windows feature "Windows Communication Foundation Non-HTTP Activation". The problem is I cannot activate it, i get the message: "An error has occurred. Not all features were successfully changed" When i look at the log (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) I found this error: Process output: [l:186 [186]"SMConfigInstaller[Error]: Failed in calling 'StartService' for service 'NetTcpActivator'. Error code: 0x8007042c Anyone can give me a clue of what is happening here?

  We are facing some issue with the sharepoint 2007 timer jobs everyday at a specific time, so decide to track the tcp blocking informartion during those hours using NetDiag tool. We are not able to find the required information if we uses "netdiag /test:ipsec", what is the command that can be used to pull the TCP blocking information and how to configure it? if i ran the command "netdiag /test:ipsec /debug" it is returning "IP Security test . . . . . . . . . : Skipped", what does it mean?

• Good reasons to keep 32-bit desktop OS's

  Server software has been 64-bit only for a while now (Since Server 2008 R2 for Windows, even earlier for Exchange and Sharepoint) and even Ubuntu are pushing you away from 32-bit versions for their server OS's. But is there any good, quantifiable reason to keep a 32-bit desktop operating system maintained? We're preparing our Windows 8 images for the (unfortunate?) few that will be early adopters. The majority of our desktop computers have 4gb or less of RAM, but I would love to not have to bother supporting a 32-bit flavoured operating system any more. Any reason why I should?

• Repair of Office Professional did not complete successfully

  When I try and run Repair on my installation of Office Professional Plus 2010 I get the error Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 configuration did not complete successfully. The file {90140000-01 15-040g-0000-0000000FF1CE)-C\OfficeMULmsi could not be found. Word, Excel, Outlook, Access all work properly, I have no complaints. The problem only came to light when trying failing to install Sharepoint Designer. How do I fix this? The host is 64bit Windows 7 Professional. Office is 32bit.

• Help with Corrupt version of IE8 on WinXPsp3

  I've upgrade from IE6 to 7 to 8 and back down and back up, but still have critical issues in IE such as * cannot see any version info in "about internet explorer" * cannot run windows update * cannot load SharePoint pages (and other pages using ActiveX or IE-specific dhtml) I've also re-installed sp3, but still no luck. Also, also - I've changed security settings to be most permissive. Next step is blowing it all away and starting with windows7. Short of that, any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

• Software for Company internal Website [closed]

  hope this is the right stackexchange site to ask this: We've a group of webpages/services at work (SE Startup), ranging from SVN, trac, continous integration to link collections to a DMS. Nearly everything has an RSS Feed to get the info I need, with the exception of SVN. I'm looking for some kind of software that can integrate these well on a kind of start-page. The most recent changes, upcoming events etc should be clearly visible, as well as an option to search (the search will be provided from a different tool). A news area should be included as well. Currently, I'm pondering doing this with either wordpress or TWiki, although wordpress seems to be the simpler solution in terms of getting something good looking quickly. Authentication should be handled by HTTP-Basic Auth, which we already have in place and working well. I normally would consider Sharepoint a viable option for this, but we're exclusively mac and linux, I won't put up a windows server just for this.

So, let's start with the basics: which Microsoft products do actually run on it? I've been looking around for a compatibility chart for a while, but couldn't find one. On the requirements/support pages for various Microsoft products (even for the latest releases), Windows Server 2012 is never mentioned at all. So, what about... SQL Server Exchange Lync SharePoint System Center (CM, OM, DPM, VMM...) And so on?

• How do I block a single css file from being loaded with firefox or chrome?

  I want to be able to block one css file from loading on my system. The site has multiple sheets that I do want to load but it has one hideous theme.css file that I just have to get rid of. I would prefer to use Chrome but FF is ok too. A system wide ban on the file would be ideal. I want to specify a single url that the computer becomes incapable of fetching it. I will then use stylish to create my own replacement. BTW its a SharePoint theme and it has way too many rules to have to override. Thanks

• Exchange 2010 allows outside access to network files

  One of our users discovered by accident he could access our network files from his smartphone while at home. No VPN needed. He was sent an email with an internal link to a network share on his android. When he opened the email and clicked on the link, he could browse our files while at home. Looking at the access logs, the connection to the share and files he accessed came from our mail server (Exchange 2010). We have no sharepoint servers running at all, and certainly not on the Exchange server. What is this function/feature called, and is it possible to turn this function/feature off? Should I turn this off?

• Does Microsoft offer a corporate IM/collaboration tool similar to Campfire? My googlefu skills appear to be failing me today.

  I mentioned to my boss that we should look into a single unified IM client that we could use and secure on a corporate level, and then suggested Campfire. We're a primarily Microsoft house so he suggested we use something that would better integrate with SharePoint and the other tools our end users use in house. However, I'm not aware of any Microsoft tool that does something like this. Obviously there is MSN Messenger but I think/hope he wasn't referring to that. Other than a product from 2005 I haven't been able to locate a Microsoft corporate IM tool...does anybody know what he may have been talking about?

• HP DL380 Losing Drive Array

  I have an HP Proliant DG380 G7 dropping one of it's arrays every hour, on the hour, for 2-5 minutes. The OS is SBS 2011 Standard, the servers runs Exchange, DC, files & Trend WFBS 8. I can watch the D Drive disappear for the duration of the problem - then it just comes back up and all is well again. There is no loss of network connectivity, although the mapped drives also disappear. We thought it might be to do with Sharepoint / VSS writers failing but it looks as though this is a symptom rather than cause. It survives a reboot. Any ideas as to what could be running on a regular schedule like this?

• WinRT WebView and Cookies

  Turns out that WebView Control in WinRT is much more limited than it’s counterpart in WPF/Silverlight. There are some great articles out there in how to extend the control in order for it to support navigation events and some other features. For a personal project I'm working on, I needed to grab cookies a Web Site generated for the user. Basically, after a user authenticated to a Web Site I needed to get the authentication cookies and generate some extra requests on her behalf. In order to do so, I’ve found this great article about a similar case using SharePoint and Azure ACS. Supported platforms Supported Visual Studio versions How to use Run Code Analysis Manually Run Code Analysis Automatically Run Code Analysis while check-in source code to TFS version control (TFSVC) Run Code Analysis as part of Team Build Understand the Code Analysis results & learn how to fix them Create your custom rule set Q & A References What is static Rule analysis? Static Code Analysis feature of Visual Studio performs static code analysis on code to help developers identify potential design, globalization, interoperability, performance, security, and a lot of other categories of potential problems according to Microsoft's rules that mainly targets best practices in writing code, and there is a large set of those rules included with Visual Studio grouped into different categorized targeting specific coding issues like security, design, Interoperability, globalizations and others. Static here means analyzing the source code without executing it and this type of analysis can be performed through automated tools (like Visual Studio 2013 Code Analysis Tool) or manually through Code Review which already supported in Visual Studio 2012 and 2013 (check Using Code Review to Improve Quality video on Channel9) There is also Dynamic analysis which performed on executing programs using software testing techniques such as Code Coverage for example. When to use? Running Code analysis tool at regular intervals during your development process can enhance the quality of your software, examines your code for a set of common defects and violations is always a good programming practice. Adding that Code analysis can also find defects in your code that are difficult to discover through testing allowing you to achieve first level quality gate for you application during development phase before you release it to the testing team. Enforce C/C++ Code Analysis (/analyze): Requires that all C or C++ projects be built with the /analyze compiler option to run code analysis before they can be checked in. Enforce Code Analysis for Managed Code: Requires that all managed projects run code analysis and build before they can be checked in. Check Code analysis rule set reference on MSDN What is Rule Set? Rule Set is a group of code analysis rules like the example below where Microsoft.Design is the rule set name where "Do not declare static members on generic types" is the code analysis rule Once you configured the Analysis rule the policy will be enabled for all the team member in this project whenever a team member check-in any source code to the TFSVC the policy section will highlight the Code Analysis policy as below TFS is a very extensible platform so you can simply implement your own custom Code Analysis Check-in policy, check this link for more details http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd492668.aspx but you have to be aware also about compatibility between different TFS versions check http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb907157.aspx Run Code Analysis as part of Team Build With Team Foundation Build (TFBuild), you can create and manage build processes that automatically compile and test your applications, and perform other important functions. Code Analysis can be enabled in the Build Definition file by selecting the correct value for the build process parameter "Perform Code Analysis" Once configure, Kick-off your build definition to queue a new build, Code Analysis will run as part of build workflow and you will be able to see code analysis warning as part of build report Understand the Code Analysis results & learn how to fix them Now after you went through Code Analysis configurations and the different ways of running it, we will go through the Code Analysis result how to understand them and how to resolve them. Code Analysis window in Visual Studio will show all the analysis results based on the rule sets you configured in the project file properties, let's dig deep into what each result item contains: 1 Check ID The unique identifier for the rule. CheckId and Category are used for in-source suppression of a warning.       2 Title The title of warning message       3 Description A description of the problem or suggested fix 4 File Name File name and the line of code number which violate the code analysis rule set 5 Category The code analysis category for this error 6 Warning /Error Depend on how you configure it in the rule set the default is Warning level 7 Action Copy: copy the warning information to the clipboard Create Work Item: If you're connected to Team Foundation Server you can create a work item most probably you may create a Task or Bug and assign it for a developer to fix certain code analysis warning Suppress Message: There are times when you might decide not to fix a code analysis warning. You might decide that resolving the warning requires too much recoding in relation to the probability that the issue will arise in any real-world implementation of your code. Or you might believe that the analysis that is used in the warning is inappropriate for the particular context. You can suppress individual warnings so that they no longer appear in the Code Analysis window. Two options available: In Source inserts a SuppressMessage attribute in the source file above the method that generated the warning. This makes the suppression more discoverable. In Suppression File adds a SuppressMessage attribute to the GlobalSuppressions.cs file of the project. This can make the management of suppressions easier. Note that the SuppressMessage attribute added to GlobalSuppression.cs also targets the method that generated the warning. It does not suppress the warning globally.       Visual Studio makes it very easy to fix Code analysis warning, all you have to do is clicking on the Check Id hyperlink if you are not aware how to fix the warring and you'll be directed to MSDN online or local copy based on the configuration you did while installing Visual Studio and you will find all the information about the warring including how to fix it. Create a Custom Code Analysis Rule Set The Microsoft standard rule sets provide groups of rules that are organized by function and depth. For example, the Microsoft Basic Design Guidelines Rules and the Microsoft Extended Design Guidelines Rules contain rules that focus on usability and maintainability issues, with added emphasis on naming rules in the Extended rule set, you can create and modify a custom rule set to meet specific project needs associated with code analysis. To create a custom rule set, you open one or more standard rule sets in the rule set editor. Create and modify a custom rule set required Visual Studio Premium or Ultimate. • DevDays ‘00 The Netherlands day #1

  First day of DevDays 2010, I was looking forward to DevDays to see all the new things like VS2010, .NET4.0, MVC2. The lineup for this year is again better than the year before, there are 100+ session of all kind of topics like Cloud, Database, Mobile, SharePoint, User experience, Visual Studio, Web. The first session of the day was a keynote by Anders Hejlsberg he talked about the history and future of programming languages. He gave his view about trends and influences in programming languages today and in the future. The second talk that i followed was from the famous Scott Hanselman, he talked about the basics of ASP.NET MVC 2, although it was a 300 level session, it was more like a level 100 session, but it was mentioned by Scott at the beginning. Although it was interesting to see all the basic things about MVC like the controllers, actions, routes, views, models etc. After the lunch the third talk for me was about moving ASP.NET webform applications to MVC from Fritz Onion. In this session he changed an example webform application part by part to a MVC application. He gave some interesting tips and tricks and showed how to solve some issues that occur while converting. Next and the fourth talk was about the difference between LINQ to SQL and  the ADO.NET  Entity Framework from Kurt Claeys. He gave a good understanding about this two options, the demos where in LINQ to SQL and the Entity Framework, the goal was to get a good understanding when and where to use both options. The last talk about this day was also from Scott Hanselman, he goes deeper into the features of ASP.NET MVC 2 and gave some interesting tips, the ninja black belt tips. He gave some tips about the tooling, the new MVC 2 html helper methods, other view engines (like NHaml, spark),T4 templating. With this tips we can be more productive and create web applications better and faster. It was a long and interesting day, I am looking forward to day #2.
