• "Busy" icon not spinning in Windows 7

  Hi there, I just got a new Sony Vaio with pre-installed Windows 7 and I noticed that the busy icon (that is, that little blue wheel that stays next to the mouse pointer when Windows is processing something) doesn't spin, ever. Does anyone know what could cause this, or how to fix it? I don't know if my computer specs would make a difference in this case, but here they are: VAIO VGN-NW240F 4 GB RAM 320 GB HD Intel Core 2 Duo Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits Thanks in advance :)

• Why does copying an XML file from Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit to Windows XP 32-bit change the file?

  What I do: Copy an xml file (ctrl+C) on a Win Server 2008 machine. Minimize mstsc.exe (remote connection app). Paste the xml file on to my WinXP machine (ctrl+V). The result: All of the original contents are still present but another bit is appended at the end of it. E.g. the proper end of the file looks something like this: <ApplicationName>MyApp</ApplicationName> </ReceivePort> </ReceivePortCollection> <PartyCollection xsi:nil="true" /> </BindingInfo> But, after the copy, it looks like this: <ApplicationName>MyApp</ApplicationName> </ReceivePort> </ReceivePortCollection> <PartyCollection xsi:nil="true" /> </BindingInfo>al, PublicKeyToken=3zzf3xxxadyyy35" Type="1" TrackingOption="ServiceStartEnd MessageSendReceive PipelineEvents" Description="" /> <ReceivePipelineData xsi:nil="true" /> <SendPipeline xsi:nil="true" /> <SendPipelineData xsi:nil="true" /> <Enable>true</Enable> <ReceiveHandler Name="WCF_OracleDB_Rx" HostTrusted="false"> <TransportType Name="WCF OracleDB" Capabilities="779" Configuratio The extra bits it adds are things that come from earlier in the XML file. If I do the copy multiple times, the extra bits are always exactly the same but another XML file will add different lines. Extra information: If I copy/paste the file, as above, but first enclose it into a zip file I do not have the same problem. I.e. the file copies properly and without any extra surprises. If I do a copy/paste from a Windows Explorer window that's opened to the folder on the remote machine, I do not have the same behavior. I.e. the file copies properly and without any extra surprises.   Forgive my ignorance, but do people build websites with Microsoft Dynamics CRM? I have a potential client who says that is the technology they will use for a new web project, for which I would be doing the HTML templating. I want to learn all I can as I am new to this particular system, but I can't seem to find anything related to web building and CRM. Is it more likely the client is developing another piece of technology to work with the CRM that they are neglecting to tell us about? Any experience or insight about this process is greatly appreciated!

  I'm trying to Linux From Scratch, I'm compiling GCC. • What does N years of experience with a language really mean?

  I've been looking at jobs descriptions since I'm graduating soon and looking for a job and what's always coming back - I'm not teaching you anything - is the "N years of experience in this language". It has been discussed in this question that if you work professionally with let's say Ruby for 2 years, but during these two years you also did some C# and PHP and were actually coding in Ruby 50% of the time. Do you say you have 1 year of experience in Ruby? 2 years? Another issue that hasn't been reviewed in the other post is for "non-professional experience". I'll give you a personal example: I've been working with Ruby on Rails since 2004 while at school. I did a lot of personal projects and school projects using this technology. I also used Rails in 2 6-month internships. Do I have 5 years of Rails experience (2004-now)? Do I have 1 year(2 internships)? Do I have nothing? I feel like I don't deserve the credit for 5 years, because the first years I wasn't working a lot with rails, but since last year I launched some websites and invested myself a lot in this technology and just saying 1 year doesn't really reflect how much I know the technology... Another example: I Learned C++ at school and did 1 big project with it (2-3 month of work and a semester of classes). I never used it in a company but I'd be able to be productive fairly quickly if I had to work on a C++ project and I have a good grasp of the concepts. Do I have no experience? 3 months? 6 months? ... something else? What I'm really trying to do is to find a way to present my skill set in a way that is compliant to what recruiters expect. I also don't want to end up at an interview that would go something like this... Recruiter (finding out the horrible truth): Oh but you said that you had 2 years of experience with this when you have none! / slaps me in the face / Me (in pain): Oh! The irony! Recruiter (yelling): Get out of my office / calls security, punches me in the throat /

  Hi, does anyone know a free service for hosting private and public git repositories? There are a lot of services like for example the well known github. Most of them only allow hosting of public repositories. I want to host one or more of my private programming projects using git, but not all of them should be public (at least not for now). I also found the free service GitFarm which is build using the Google App Engine technology, but i couldn't find any information how it works (don't know what "built on Google App Engine technology" means) or if there are any other limitations. Also it seams like there is no web front-end available. An integrated web front-end, bug tracker and stuff like this would also be a big plus!

• What are some of the practical cons to using ASMX webservices?

  Hello, at my workplace we are about to start a big project. My boss (a programmer, this is a startup) wishes to use ASMX webservices for this purpose. I do not want to start off a new program using deprecated technology and would like to show him this. I dislike WCF at this moment because it has such an extreme learning curve, but I'd rather learn it than use an unsupported technology. The problem I'm having is that I can not find any practical list of cons and downfalls when compared to WCF so that I can convince my boss to not use them. And saying "it's not as powerful" is not an adequate explanation. What exactly can it not do that we may need it to do for a webservice that is not meant to be shared externally? (as in, we don't support third-parties using our webservices unless they are using one of our clients. )

• How can I embed firefox in a GUI application?

  Has anyone ever embedded the firefox web browser technology in their own [unmanaged] C/C++ GUI application in the same way that IE can be embedded as a COM object? (I would like to do this on Linux, not Windows). Are there "better" alternatives to firefox? I'm open to anything as long as I can use it with non-GPL code. My needs are fairly basic; I only need fundamental HTML parsing and display of static local files, but I'd take advantage of more sophisticated technology, if I can get it. I'd like to be able to use JavaScript, but I can get by without it.

  I am using search logic to filter results on company listing page. The user is able to specify any number of parameters using a variety of named URLs. For example: /location/mexico /sector/technology /sector/financial/location/argentina Results in the following respectively: params[:location] == 'mexico' params[:sector] == 'technology' params[:sector] == 'financial' and params[:location] == 'argentina' I am now trying to cleanup or 'DRY' my model code. • Letters seem to be rendered wrongly in Firefox

  So, when I'm browsing in firefox, some letters look grainy or glowing, does anyone know what might be causing this? It doesn't show on all website, only some. It almost looks like Firefox is trying to render different font colours on top of eachother and blends them in the process somehow. I'd like to ensure that we deliver it using technology that is easy for end developers to implement and not tied to any particular platform, rather than using technology that is unpopular/incompatible with developers. I compiled and installed a new kernel, but I can not get it to boot. • Sendmail smtp-auth issues

  I'm running into a problem with Sendmail trying to implement SMTP- auth. I"m running 8.14.5 and have saslauthd running under FreeBSD 7.0-R. I don't believe I have starttls enabled (but I also compiled a version with it and have been testing it too - same problem) - just looking for basic auth, but am wondering if my configuration is not compatible with modern mail clients? I don't think I have any certs set up. It seems an older version of Microsoft Outlook Express works fine with SMTP-auth with no problems, but Outlook 2010 won't work, and neither will Eudora (basic settings to not use encryption and use same uid/pw as pop3 account name) When trying to send mail the server reports: "550 571 Relaying Denied. Proper authentication required." Is there some config that I am missing?
