• MS Windows Server 2008R2 slow file copy, slow network connection

  i just setup a windows 2008R2 standard server, with the only installed app being Hyper-V, and only 1 windows XP VM is running. Whenever i try to copy a file from my windows 7 laptop over to the 2008R2 server machine's admin shares ( \\servername\c$ ) the files start transferring around 60mb/s and then drop to around 5mb/s. My windows 7 machine and the server 2008 machine are both in WORKGROUP (no domain here). when i try the same transfer to our server 2003 box the transfer speeds are fine. tried disabling autotuning (netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled) as well as turning off the checksum offload to the adapter (tx and rx) - i still see strange packet errors (bad header checksum) using wireshark and just cannot seem to track down what the issue is - over 1 hour to transfer 4gb of files from 1 server to another that are on the same GB switch is just crazy.... any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

• Ubuntu 13.10 install ISO crashes on VirtualBox Mac 4.3

  Does anybody know what to do about this? Machine is a 2008 Core 2 Duo iMac with 4GB RAM. (And 64bit Debian 7 boots OK, but I've not tried installing under the latest version of VirtualBox as I have just upgraded VBox today.) • How can I install a 32bit python on 64 bit Ubuntu

  I am using Ubuntu 10.10 (Linux pc07 2.6.35-27-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 22 20:25:46 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux) and the default python package (Python 2.6.6). I would like to install python-psyco to improve the performance of one of my scripts, but only python-psyco-doc is available for 64 bit. I tried a virtual machine, but the the performance boost is much less on the virtual machine than on a "real" installed 32-bit Ubuntu. • HP PDX Laptop and blu-ray region, HP MediaSmart problem

  I have a laptop here, a HP HDX 16 EO1000 with a Blu-Ray drive. Installed on the machine is a software package called HP MediaSmart, which presumably can play Blu-Ray movies. However, when inserting a BD disk and starting HP MediaSmart, it comes up with a warning screen and the following message: This disc has been coded for Region B only and will not play in this machine. Please eject this disc and play on a Region B player. The question is, can we change this region? The machine is in europe, which is the B-region, but apparently the drive, or software, or both, is set to some other region. I don't even know where to find the current setting so if anyone knows, please post an answer with some information of where to look.

• JoinDomainOrWorkgroup Method FJoinOptions help

  Anyone have experience of using the JoinDomainOrWorkgroup Method of the Win32_ComputerSystem Class? I want to write a powershell script to join a machine to a domain. There may be an existing computer account for the machine, and if so I want to delete it and rejoin to the domain. I've already scripted the "search and destroy" part that will delete the computer account if it exists, but just noticed the FJoinOptions switches on Technet. Trouble is - they're a bit ambiguous. Does 4 (0x4) Deletes an account when a domain exists. mean it will delete the computer account if it already exists on the domain? Also, can you specify the computername you want to join the machine under with this method, or should you do a rename and then join the domain. • Windows Update when Group Policy Forbids

  I am in the administrators group for my local Windows XP machine and I would like to get updates via http://update.microsoft.com/[1]. However, this is prevented via the group policy: Network policy settings prevent you from using this website to get updates for your computer. Is there anyway to override this specific policy for my machine or my user? [1] Several installed applications are Microsoft based, but are not part of the machine standard (eg Visual studio). As such, I am not getting the updates for these applications. I could periodically go to the various application sites and look for hotfixes, but that is beyond tedious.

• Resolving the Access is Denied Error in VSeWSS Deployments

  Visual Studio Extensions for Windows SharePoint Services 1.3 (VSeWSS 1.3) tends to make my life easier unless I'm typing out the words that make up the VSeWSS acronym - really, what a mouthful.  But one of the problems that I routinely encounter are error messages when trying to deploy solutions.  These normally look something like the following: Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)) I tried a variety of steps to resolve this issue: Recycling the application pool Restarting IIS Closing Visual Studio Not detaching from the debugger until a request was fully completed Logging off and logging back into Windows etc. Nothing actually worked.  Some of these resolution attempts seemed to help keep the problem from happening quite as frequently, but I still have no idea what EXACTLY causes the problem and it would rear its ugly head from time to time.  Unfortunately, the only resolution I found that seemed to work was to reboot the machine . which is a crappy resolution. Finally sick enough of the problem to spend some time on it, I went on a search and tried to figure out if anyone else was having this issue.  People seem to suggest that turning off the Indexing Service on your machine helps resolve this problem.  I tried turning it off but I kept having issues.  Which was depressing.  Fortunately, I stumbled upon the resolution when I was looking through the services list.  If you encounter the issue, all you have to do is reset the World Wide Web Publishing Service.  I've had a 100% success rate so far with this approach.  I'm not sure if having the Indexing Service is part of the solution, but I've kept it disabled for the time being because I'm really sick of having to reboot my machine to deal with that error message. • Remote Desktop Connection - Connection Failed

  Let me explain the problem. My system is connected to a network and 'was' having XP installed in it. Recently i formatted the system and installed windows server 2003 and added the machine to the network. Everything is working fine like mapping the network drives, pinging the machines etc. But i've the following problems. I'm not able to do a remote desktop connection to another system in the network. Some systems in the network is able to do a remote desktop to my machine. But not all. If i host any web service in my system i'm not able to connect it from any other machine in the network. I've already configured the Remote Desktop to accept connections. Any ideas? NLV

• Catching people up

  It’s been a while since I’ve blogged.  I suppose sometimes when one’s personal life gets busy, there are some things that fall by the wayside.  So what all has happened since I last blogged? Business has been good with lots of lessons learned.  I had hoped I would have had an important announcement several months ago concerning the business I own, but that simply hasn’t materialized yet. Will keep everyone posted.  Ensuring your business has a good sales pipeline and stays ahead in the technology curve is extremely important. I eventually resigned my INETA Board of Directors position.  Never one to mince words, frankly I had several issues with how things are run at INETA.  Mostly centered around some ethical issues compounded by higher expectations and what I felt was a lack of support.  I had put my hat into the ring in order to help change things, but eventually I didn’t really see change a possibility, and so all things must come to an end. I have started writing up a new business plan for a new startup, details to be forthcoming.  It’s new name will be Linker CRM.  I have some aggressive game changing plans ahead for it.  Ping me if you’re interested in finding out more information and don’t mind signing a non-compete and confidentiality agreement. ;) My personal life, has been hectic.  A 4 year old will do that to you.  As well as being divorced and the headaches associated with that.  If you’ve been divorced, I feel your pain, if you haven’t been, I would never wish the emotional roller coaster ride on anyone.  Dating has been interesting.  It’s a lot different at age 35 than your early 20s and relationships are far more complicated. Ethan is an absolutely fantastic adorable charmer of a kid.  He’s definitely going to be a heartbreaker.  His personality is really shining through and he’s taken onto my appreciation of music (and yes I’ll admit dance too).  We watched America’s Best Dance Crew (ABDC) together for the first time, he really loved it and I think he’ll probably start his own break dancing crew eventually.  I’ve posted a few videos on Facebook for those interested.  I’m extremely proud of him, but please say a little prayer for us as we try and continue to curb some behavior issues, as well as his mother and I try to settle some differences. This year’s travel plans have already included Dallas, Seattle, and a trip to Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics (a huge thanks to the Washington State Police for the nice souvenir they gave me).  Future travel plans include a trip to Korea in the 2nd half of May, Nashville again in the summer, and hopefully New Orleans for the Microsoft TechEd 2010 Conference. Look for some new blog posts soon …

• Network printing -- setting up and printing over network using Mac OS X

  I've connected a USB printer to a Mac OS X (10.4) machine -- this computer is connected to a network with a registered IP address -- and enabled sharing through the System Preferences setting (under "Shared" and "Print & Fax". Is this printer shared through the Bonjour or CUPS protocol (does it matter that I know)? How do I sent a print job to this computer (also from a 10.4 OS X machine)? It does not show up in the list of printers in the Default Network when I go to "add printer"; do I need to do anything else (on either machine)? Thanks much!

• Proliant ML350 Won't Load Windows

  I have a HP Proliant ML350 G4 running Windows 2003 Server Std Edition that will not load Windows on boot. It gave me a BSOD while running a recent Windows update and has not been able to boot since. The BSOD was a generic error, "Hardware Fault. Contact vendor." I am not getting any errors when the machine boots--it just hangs with a black screen when Windows starts to load. The machine will not boot into safe mode either--it gets stuck after beginning to load drivers. When trying to load the Windows recovery console I get the message that Windows cannot find any hard disks on the machine. This, despite having to load the driver for my storage controller. The HP Smart Start diagnostics finds no problems with my hard disks nor anything else. What should I try next? Mainly, I just want to be able to pull the data off my hard disks.

• VPN with wrong subnet mask

  I followed these instructions on www.hottonetworking.com to set up VPN on a clean install of Windows Server 2008 SP2 (not R2 yet). When I then establish a VPN connection to that machine from a client machine (running Windows 7 RC), everything succeeds (it seems since I get a 'Connected' state in the network sharing center window), but I end up with a subnet mask (according to ipconfig /all) of 255.255.255.255 instead of 255.255.255.0. The net effect is that I don't have local network or internet capability. What additional configuration steps do I have to do to get VPN with the proper subnet mask working? Update: Using the steps outlined in the Technet article mentioned by Mr. Nimble, I was able to get internet connection. Apparently the subnet mask is not an issue as my coworker was able to connect using his VPN connection and ping the server machine by name as well.

  We are having a server with good CPU and RAM,so we are planning to do XEN virtualization on ubuntu 12.04 server to handle high traffic. The plan is to keep the host machine only to manage VMs(no NAT ing). A New public IP will be assigned to that VM,For that i think we need a Bridge to external network(Since my Machine has only single ethernet card aliased with 4 different Pub IP's) Is it possible to create a bridge using aliased IP single ethernet card aliased to 4 pub IPs Do we need an additional Ethernet card to do Bridging.Only have ssh access to the machine. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

• Configuring RealVNC to accept copy/paste on a remote server

  Hi So, I'm using RealVNC Viewer locally (Mac OSX 10.6) and connecting to a VNC Server on a remote machine (Debian - I'm no Unix expert). I want to be able to copy and paste at the command line, but Ctrl+V, Shift+V and Command+V all do nothing on the remote command line. First question: should I be trying a different combination of keys? Secondly, if it's not that I'm using the wrong combination of keys, how can I configure VNC Server to accept copy and paste? I have 'Share clipboard with VNC Server' checked locally, so I figure it must be a problem on the remote machine. I only have command-line access on the remote machine (though I am root) so I need to configure the option somehow via the command line.

• AVG 9 (Internet Security Business Edition) and IIS 6.0

  Are any of you using AVG 9 Internet Security Business Edition along with IIS 6.0 and if so have you experienced problems? We just went from 8.5 to 9.0... Luckily I tried on only one of the servers in the web farm first to run for a week to make sure it played well with my servers. A few hours after the install all web apps were giving a "connection refused" error. Neither iisrest or restarting world wide web publishing services resolves the issue, only rebooting the machine brings the webs back up. They are all ASP.Net sites by the way (v2.5). What's interesting is if I take the machine out of the load balancer, the machine runs fine and the webs are just fine for days... as soon as i put it back in the pool it's only a few hours before its sad. The only thing I can think of right now is that the Resident Shield may be causing an issue, any thoughts?

• Dedicate a NIC to a Virtualbox VM

  On a machine with multiple NICs, running either Windows or Linux, is it possible to dedicate a NIC to a VM such that the host won't even try to use it for itself? I suspect it isn't even possible but if it is, which OS and version and just how would I set it up? The reason for this, apart from academic curiosity, is that I'm trying to set up a network lab for testing purposes. I currently have only a single spare machine, otherwise this wouldn't be an issue. One of the VMs will be the firewall for this lab network, so will need a dedicated NIC for the WAN interface. Neither ESXi nor Xen server will run on the machine, so I have to use a host OS.

• Getting ERR_DNS_FAIL when loading a local webserver page?

  When I go to a page hosted on a machine on a local network, I get a "The page cannot be found" error with "ERR_DNS_FAIL" in the title. Any ideas what this is or why I am getting it on my computer? I've tried in Firefox, IE and Chrome. Other computers on the network load the page just fine. I'm pretty sure it is from the hostname. I am able to access the page if I browse to it using the IP of the machine. However, it has two hostnames and both are giving the ERR_DNS_FAIL error. I tried restarting the browsers or rebooting the machine, but neither helped. EDIT: ISSUE RESOLVED ON ITS OWN!

  I wrote about implementing a custom profile provider inside of your ASP.NET MVC application yesterday. If you haven’t read the article, don’t sweat it.  Most of the stuff I write is rubbish anyway. Since you have joined me today, though, I might as well offer up a little tip: you can run into trouble, like I did, if you enable your custom profile provider inside of an application which is deployed using a Web Deployment Project.  Everything will run great on your local machine and you’ll probably take an early lunch because you got the code running in no time flat and the build server is happy and all tests pass and, gosh, maybe you’ll just cut out early because it is Friday after all.  But then the first user hits the integration machine and, that’s right, yellow screen of death. Lucky you, just as you’re walking out the door, the user kindly sends the exception message and stack trace: Value cannot be null. • Unity Plugin DLLNotFoundException

  I am using a plugin DLL that I created in Visual C++ Express 2010 on windows 7 64 bit Ultimate Edition. The DLL functions properly on the machine that it was originally created on. The problem is that the DLL is not functioning in the Unity3d Editor on another machine and giving an error that basically states that the DLL is missing some of its dependencies. The target machine is running Windows 7 Home 64 bit (if this is relevant) Results from the error log of Dependency Walker: Error: The Side-by-Side configuration information for "c:\users\dewayne\desktop\shared\vrpnplugin\unityplugin\build\release\OPTITRACKPLUGIN.DLL" contains errors. The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail (14001). Error: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in an implicitly dependent module. Error: Modules with different CPU types were found. Warning: At least one delay-load dependency module was not found. Warning: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in a delay-load dependent module. • How can I set up multiple dynamic users to update a single network's dynamic IP

  On my home network we are allocated a dynamic IP. I want to configure ddclient (or an equivalent) to send IP updates to DNS-O-Matic/OpenDNS only when I am on my home network. I do not want to send IP updates when I'm on my office network. Can this be done? I am prepared to use different FLOSS software or a different free DNS service. Additionally, there are multiple users who may be on the home network or away on other networks. How can we configure ddclient on each machine so that whoever is on the home network updates the IP (i.e. so we don't have to rely on a particular machine being on the network to update the IP). OpenDNS support have said we can't simply install updater software on each machine.

• does ping command to a dns name uses DNS PTR type messages?

  Okay I cant understand this, when I try to ping to a machine on my network using the name associated I get a response from that machine, thats normal.. But there are messages that the sender sends to the top machine (SOA) that I dont understand.. First he sends a type A and gets a response with the IP associated to the name used on the ping command, but after that.. the sender only sends (before each ping) messages of type PTR to the (SOA) Saying this: Standar query 0xf66c PTR 12.45.168.192.in-addr.arpa and SOA respond with: Standard query response 0xf66c No such name And before each ping they do this, I dont know why... I notice this using wireshark, thanks alot again for accept me here, being able to get some answer :)

  So I thought I would  change the name of my machine so that the other devs can find the TFS server easily. TFS 2005 would use the cool cmd line util tfsadminutil.....alas he is now gone HERE Are the steps to complete Edit the web.config and is usually located on default install C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Application Tier\Web Services\web.config <add key="applicationDatabase" value="Data Source=JUSTIN\SQLI01;Initial Catalog=Tfs_Configuration;Integrated Security=True;" /> Next step is to edit previous Solutions/Projects 1) Open the Solution file i.e ProductApp.sln 2) Edit the SccTeamFoundationServer URL under Global section i.e Change this to new name   If you have DB server on same machine ...you will need to go in and remove existing db user account assigned to the tfs DB Remove old [%machine_name%] value i.e Tuned_Dev_PC_12\Justin user from the above DBs No add the new Justin\Justin user account associated with the new machine name to the TFS & Reporing dbs ... dbo or the TFSADMIN & TFSEXEC roles either will do in this case. (or add both ) Now either ReApply user or add New account (remove old account i.e Tuned_Dev_PC_12\justin) If DB permisions are setup correctyly you will get a screen that looks like this   If it pauses or gets stuck you need to look back at the adding correct DB Perms to the i.e JUSTIN\Justin user account Also if your project is still complaining about old TFS name 1) Team\Connect new Team Foundation Server 2) Add\Remove TFS 3) Add New TFS Name  Once you have connected to the new TFS server Reload your project from TFS..this way it removes a lot of the bugs that hang around in the local project\solution This is similar to a VSS2005 and older fix Cheers ( eta about 60-90 mins so weigh up the the need vs payoff. ) Shutdown restart

• How can I unfreeze an SSD connected to a remote server?

  I don't have physical access to the machine, so I can't unplug the drive. # hdparm -I /dev/sda | grep frozen frozen The advice I've read elsewhere is to hotplug the drive, pull the power / sata cables while the machine is running. Those are not possible in this situation as I don't have physical access. I've tried power cycling the machine through the host's control panel a few times, but that hasn't worked. Is there any way I can unfreeze (unfrozen?) the drive without physical access?
