• raid 5 creation (using mdadm) lots of read/writes on creation: is this normal?

  I created a software raid 5 disk using: mdadm -C /dev/md2 -l5 -n4 /dev/sd[i-l] at the same time I'm using dstat to see io-activity: dstat -c -d -D total,sda1,md2,sdi,sdj,sdk,sdl -l -m -n and notice that disks sd[i-k] are all read from and sdl is written to. Now, I do understand that raid5 has to be configured, but it takes a really long time and all disks are clean & formatted (using xfs) so I figure there might be some kind of shortcut to skip (unnecessary? ) checking.. Is it? The creation is part of a time-critical nightly batch-process (run on amazon ec2) so it's not a one-time thing. Thanks, Geert-Jan

• Wordpress serving PHP but not CSS or JS

  I'm trying to set up an Amazon EC2 instance to run a Django app and a WP instance side by side, differing only by the incoming URL. Initially, accessing the site via mysite.com/wordpress worked, but I also needed to catch the incoming requests from a subdomain address blog.mysite.com. To do that, I created a default file in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled and included two virtualhost directives, one of which was <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName www.blog.mysite.com <Directory /var/www/wordpress> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost> This created some errors with the other virtualhost, so I restored the default 000-default file configuration and restarted. Now, accessing mysite.com/wordpress takes forever, and even then the CSS and JS files are not loading. Iside the Firebug Net tab, I can see the HTML response, but the CSS and JS files are not loading at all. What happened here?

• remove start.funmoods search from chrome

  I post this with much trepidation after my baptism by fire recently, and knowing that this question has been asked and answered already. My problem is that I cannot seem to remove start.funmoods as the default search engine when I type into the omnibox in Chrome - I have followed the instruction in the answer to the previous question on this topic. In particular: I deleted funmods using the control panel - add/remove programs Under wrench-tools-extensions funmods is not mentioned Under wrench-settings-manage search engines, there is nothing listed at all. Restarted chrome and rebooting have not helped.

• Network Path not found while joining Active Directory

  So I have an Amazon EC2 box running Windows Server 2008 with Active Directory installed on it. I also have a Windows 7 virtual machine, which is set to use the Active Directory box as its DNS and WINS server. I'm trying to join the virtual machine to the domain, and I'm asked for authentication. I give authentication, wait a minute, and I get an error saying: The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "ad.chigs.me": The network path was not found. How can I fix this so that I'll be able to join the domain? Thanks!

• Tool to test a user account and password (test login)

  Yeah, I can fire up a VM or remote into something and try the password...I know...but is there a tool or script that will simulate a login just enough to confirm or deny that the password is correct? Scenario: A server service account's password is "forgotten"...but we think we know what it is. I'd like to pass the credentials to something and have it kick back with "correct password" or "incorrect password". I even thought about a drive mapping script with that user account and password being passed to see if it mapped the drive successfully or not but got lost in the logic of making it work correctly...something like: -Script asks for username via msgbox -script asks for password via msgbox -script tries to map a drive to a common share that everyone has access to -script unmaps drive if successful -script returns popup msgbox stating "Correct Password" or else "Incorrect Password" Any help is appreciated...you'd think this would be a rare occurrence not requiring a tool to support it but...well....

• How do I correctly display special characters in my Firefox browser?

  (Firefox 3.6.13 on Windows XP) Every once in a while I notice an odd character on certain web pages when browsing the web. It is a outline of a box with a 4-digit number inside. And example of a page that has these characters is: http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/#highlights After each section heading (Elastic, Completely Controlled, ...) I see a box with the number "0096" inside. I looked at the cached version on Google, and google has &ndash; in it's place, so I'm guessing I should be seeing a dash there instead of the box with the numbers in it. I have tried changing the character encoding in Firefox but haven't been able to find one that shows these characters correctly. Is there a way to allow Firefox to view these characters?   We have several servers they have public IP's, but work together (one is with Load Balancer, orther with Apache Web server, other with MySQL and so on. Most of the ports are fire-walled, so only "local" servers can be connect there. However ALL servers have some ports that must be publicly open. We have SYN Cookies enabled and from time to time we got: possible SYN flooding on port 8080. Sending cookies. Port 8080 is not public. How we can switch OFF SYN Cookies for some ports (e.g. 8080, 3306 etc) or from some sources (e.g. our servers), but in same time SYN Cookies to be switched ON for all other ports, e.g. port 80. We found this similar problem, except our servers are with public IP's: SYN cookies on internal machines

• Capture the build number for a remote-triggered Hudson job?

  I have a very simple inhouse web app from which certain Hudson builds (on another server) can be triggered remotely. I have no problem triggering the builds, but I don't know how to capture the associated build number for later reference. I'm using the buildWithParameters trigger, and the actual result of that call is just a mess of HTML - I don't believe it gives me back the build number. I started down the path of pulling the whole build list for the job (via the api), and then attempting to reconcile that list against my records - but that's much more complicated than I'd like it to be. I also considered sleeping for a few seconds after launching the job, and then grabbing the latestBuild from the Hudson api - but I'm sure that's going to go wrong at some point (someone will fire off two jobs quickly, and I'll get the association wrong).

• When load balancing, must all copies of static web page be exactly the same?

  I am used to get answers for everything on the web, but not this time... Yesterday I enable Amazon DNS weight functionally to load balance 7 websites between two different IP addresses (split 50%-50%). Both servers run IIS 8.5, sites runs well on both sides. Today I found out that Google WebMasterTools is reporting fails error with file robots.txt, all close to 50% of access try errors. The robots.txt file is ok and accessible (even via Google testing URL page) on both servers. Lets say current version of static web pages are on the first computer and the updated version of the same web pages are on the second computer. Can it be the problem? When load balancing, can static web pages be slightly different from one host server to the other? Thank you for your help

• ubuntu server refusing connections via port forwarding

  Getting some really weird behavior from our Ubuntu server... it's behind a Verizon router firewall with port forwarding (port 8080 to port 80 on the server), and we've been having issues accessing it via this external IP. From within the network, it appears to respond normally (I can access it via web browser and SSH), but refuses connections through port forwarding (using our static external IP). The strangest thing is that it actually responds to external port-forwarded connections right after being restarted, but quickly lapses back into this pattern of refusing external connections. I'm a bit of a server newbie (I'm actually a programmer in a small startup that just lost their server ops guy, urgh) so this is all trial by fire for me. Does anyone have any advice on what could be going wrong here? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

• Resize image on ViewSonic CD3200-EU

  My ViewSonic CD3200-EU monitor doesn't seem to have an option to scale the image vertically. I've tried all the buttons which look promising and even went as far as browsing the manual (possibly my first time). http://www.viewsoniceurope.com/uk/assets/004/9269.pdf Does anyone know if this can be done? • Laptop held hostage by administrator domain and Bit locker

  I have a laptop computer that I had when I was working at an IT company. I don´t work there anymore but I could keep the computer (Lenovo) Suddenly my wireless internet didn´t work anymore showing error "insert SIM into the mobile broadband device" and month later connectiong to internet with cable got disabled I don´t know the password to sign in as an administrator on domain and whatever I try to do/install/change settings... everything needs admin rights. To surf the internet again with the computer I tried to install a new Windows but it´s seems to be protected with Bit Locker, asking for recovery key. I´ve googled and googled bunch of CMD tricks but most of the shows "system error 5 has occured" Is there anyway to get the wireless internet to work, change the admin or install new Windows? - or should I rather enjoying throwing it of the balcony or set it one fire? :)

• How to quickly start Programs like "regedit.exe" from the Windows 7 search bar using substring matching?

  The search bar in Windows 7 is very convenient to quickly start applications by pressing the Win-key and then entering the name of the application. For applications with a Program Menu entry like Firefox, it is sufficient to type Fire and Firefox will be displayed in the Programs section of the search results. For other applications like regedit.exe, I have to type the full command regedit before the correct choice regedit.exe appears. Is there any way to have regedit.exe appear already when I have just entered a substring? Please note: I have seen Add my applications to Vista’s Start Search, but I don't want to add anything to the Start Menu manually. This question is about if there is some configuration that can be tuned to make the results appear. I have also seen Search behavior of Windows 7 start menu, but my problem is not that the exe appears under Files, regedit.exe correctly appears under Programs, but it should appear already for a substring match.

• Windows updates behind a physical firewall with only IP based rules and generic outbound connections are turned off

  I have some boxes that I do not want to allow any in or outbound traffic to the internet Except for windows updates. However the fire wall in place (Cisco ASA) apparently only supports ip based rules. As best I can tell access to Microsoft updates via anything other then the half dozen URL masks the Microsoft lists as needed does not appear possible. I have kicked around building a full WSUS that I would then manually copy the update files to so that no direct Microsoft access is needed but this sounds very top heavy for the very few boxes involved. I have also kicked around manual updates all around but am not certain how to be conveniently and confidently sure that the correct updates are being applied in the correct order. Any ideas from any direction would be appreciated. I want this as simple / cost effective as possible but have very little flexibility on the only absolutely required internet access policy.

  I'm sure this is an easy solution, I'm just not too familiar with how DNS works or if that's even related to this problem. If I'm running a web service on amazon ec2, distributed across many instances, how can I make it so a single domain name can be used to access the entire pool of servers, which will be changing from time to time? Since the instances may be present one second but gone the next (and vice versa), I need a way to randomly pick an active member of the cluster to route to. The updates would have to be instantaneous. Is this even possible, with dns caching and all?

  We are using Windows 2008 R2 and IIS 7 running on Amazon EC2. IIS is running a single .NET application written in C#. We are having performance issues and I want to give the application more memory, but I cannot figure out how to do it. How do I control the amount of memory that the CLR gets? I'm a total newbie with IIS, .NET and the CLR. If I were working with Java, I would just use the -Xmx flag to increase the memory available to the JVM (e.g., -Xmx3000m for 3GB). But, I cannot seem to figure out how to do this in the Windows world.

  The Mac Pro has a specific hard drive for sale in the Apple Store for $549.00. The drive has the following specs: Serial ATA 3GB per second 7200 RPM Amazon has a hard drive with the same specs for $169.99. The only difference I can tell is that the Apple hard drive label says it has "Apple HDD Firmware". What exactly is the benefit of this firmware and is there something I am missing that make up for the price difference in these two drives? Update: My initial comparison between the two drive was unfair. Apparently 2TB drives that are 3 GB/S and 7200 RPM are quiet a bit more than $169.99. Dell has a 2 TB SATA Caviar Black from Western Digital that is $319.99, which is closer to Apple's price.

• Automatize uploading the YouTube

  Here's the problem: I would like to keep lots of home made videos. Of course, they are subject to being lost, or somebody could steal the the computer, or water or fire could destroy them. Secondly, I have to plug in my hard drive every time I want to watch something, which I find slow and cumbersome. • Continue process after closing terminal?

  Recently, I tried to unzip a 30 gig zip file on a remote system using Putty. As the long unzipping process continued, I closed Putty, assuming that the process would just continue to run on the remote machine. When I came back later and logged back into the machine again, I realized that the process must have stopped only part way through when I closed Putty. I wasn't expecting that to happen. My question is, how do I prevent this problem? Can I somehow fire off a process in the background? Or should just setup a one time cronjob that will run the process for me?

• Logins with only HTTP - are they as insecure as I'm thinking?

  Recently I was thinking about how websites like gmail and amazon use HTTPS during the login process when accessing your account. This makes sense, obviously, since you're typing in your account username and password and you would want that to be secure. However, on Facebook, among countless other websites, their logins are done with simple HTTP. Doesn't that mean that my login name and password are completely unencrypted? Which, even worse, means that all those people who login to their facebooks (or similar sites) at a wifi hotspot in public are susceptible to anyone getting their credentials using a simple packet sniffer (or something similar)? Is it really that easy? Or am I misunderstanding internet security? I'm a software engineer working on some web related stuff, and although at the current time I'm not too involved with the security aspect of our software, I knew I should probably know the answer to this question, since it's extremely fundamental to website security.   StackExchange manages it's own servers, as it should, but if SE were to be hosted on a 3rd party "cloud" hosting (like Amazon's), what would it's monthly / yearly expenses be(keeping everything else the same)? A detailed answer comparing it to the bills that Stackexchange boots currently (including power/property/staff) would help. (PS: I know that the blog is a good resource.   Hello, We are developing a web application that will deal with highly sensitive (financial) data of clients (audience is medium to large sized businesses). Clients will be under scrutiny from regulators & auditors and, as such, we will be too. More importantly to give clients a level of comfort our application and related hosting arrangement should instill a lot of confidence with them. We are looking into using a cloud based service like Linode, Amazon EC2, etc. To allow for maximum flexibility We are keen on putting everything on virtual servers and avoiding having to buy our own hardware. Does a cloud based service make sense for our particular scenario? If not what type of hosting should we consider? If so what should we look out for? Thanks!
