  • Good references to know why has my computers stopped responding me

    Hello all! I´m a windows xp user (but not for much time...) and I usually see how my computer stop of responding me. The process is this: Firsly it became totally stopped or very slow for certain periods of 5 minutes. How could I do? After that it gets stopped (Even not totally because If I click on the bar I see a blinking response in the bar botton of the program I click on. It´s could be anything related with security (like the firewall or some virus)? Computer university: I usually experience this, using Matlab (R2007a) with System Generator (its respective compatible version) My personal laptop: It´s usually works well but when stopped periods became to appears I know in not much time it will became totally stopped. I usually see how Word 2007 get stopped and after a while my windows xp gets stopped. (well I can access to the the manage task pressing ctr+alt and...). The only solution I see is to kill program by program... My petition: Please, I need good references that help me how to think in order to avoid or to manage the problems previously described. Does anyone know usefull books or articles?   • Puppet : How to override / redefine outside child class (usecase and example detailled)

    The use case i try to illustrate is when to declare some item (eq mysqld service) with a default configuration that could be included on every node (class stripdown in the example, for basenode), and still be able to override this same item in some specific class (eg mysql::server), to be included by specific nodes (eg myserver.local) I illustrated this use case with the example below, where i want to disable mysql service on all nodes, but activate it on a specific node. But of course, Puppet parsing fails because the Service[mysql] is included twice. And of course, class mysql::server bears no relation to be a child of class stripdown Is there a way to override the Service["mysql"], or mark it as the main one, or whatever ?     At this morning, my laptop (Dell Latitude e6410) gave me this error. I didn't do anything, I didn't change anything. And I got this docking station just 2 month ago. I made a little research on the internet but I couldn't find read solution for this situation. Now my docking station is not charging to my laptop. I'm using Windows 7. What should I do in this situation ? Your docking station power adapter is not recognized by your Dell notebook. As a result, your power adapter may not provide sufficient power to run the system, your battery will not charge, your system will run slowly. Please insert a 65 watt Dell approved power adapter.

  • HP Power Manager SMTP setup doesn't have space for username & password

    Is there some way to configure HP Power Manager to not assume that there's an email server running locally? We recently acquired an HP T1500 G3 UPS, which we're trying to control using HP Power Manager 4.2. The main reason we wanted to get this particular UPS is because it says it's capable of sending notifications (of the "Yo, the power's out, you may want to look into it" type) via email, as opposed to SNMP. Turns out, that's not entirely true. The server is running Windows Server 2003. It is not running an email server of any sort - we do that via two different providers. Outlook email is provided by Verizon, and our SMTP email service is provided by a small local company. When we use CDO to send auto-generated notification emails, we have to provide the SMTP server name, port, username, and password. The HP Power Manager interface only allows us to enter the server name and the username. Thus, not surprisingly, the emails never go anywhere. Help?

  • adding a custom user folder on Ubuntu

    Question: How do you add a custom folder to the collection of user folders that come with Ubuntu? Info: I just loaded my netbook with Ubuntu Desktop 10.04LTS (Desktop because it is an aspire one and the Apocalypse seems to follow when ever i try to install netbook remix onto it). It comes with standard folders like Documents, Music, Pictures, Downloads(though this one doesn't appear until you actually download something), Videos, etc etc. These are handly little folders because they have little symbols on them and are nicely located in my file browser. it is basically like the folder lay out the windows had in vista. I do a lot of little programing on this computer so i have a folder in which i keep all these single kb code files. Obviously named "Code" that I keep in my home folder. But I would really like to it over listed next to my other user folders. In summary, how do you add a folder to the listing on the file browser. And, if possible, how do you give it an icon? (I understand fully that I will probably have to make said Icon) those two things are what I'm seeking to do. ~n P.s. please correct me if I'm using the wrong name. I just guessed and called them "User Folders" because they were folders the user uses. made sense. but if they have another name like "libraries" please say so. Thanks

    I need a service which allows me to edit a hosted text file by email. For example: I write an email to [email protected] with subject "ADD LINE 10" and sending it the mail body is inserted into myfile which is hosted on a server of someservice.ext. Same for "DELETE LINE 12" or "SUBSTITUTE LINE 15". If I write "ECHO FILE" or something similar, the service should send me an email with the updated content of the text file. Does it exist?

  • Permanently deleting files on Mac OS

    A while back, as relatively new Mac OS X user, I was surprised to learn that you cannot easily delete files. Directly, that is, without moving them to the trash first. On Windows and Linux this can obviously be done with ease, but not so on the Mac. I noticed this when trying clear up files from a USB memory stick — removing the files ("move to trash") does not free up space; that happens only after emptying the whole system-wide Trash. Not particularly convenient! (It seems stupid to have to empty the whole trashcan just to make some space on the USB stick. There might be gigabytes of stuff in there, and this sort of defeats its purpose - what if you'd actually need to restore something from the trash some day.) So, what's your way of getting around this? Have you bought a 3rd party application like RAW Trash for $16.95 just to delete files, or do you diligently empty the trashcan whenever needed? Or did I miss something? Also, can you convince me that this is actually the way it should be — that users shouldn't be able to fiddle with the filesystem easily? :)

    In Windows Vista, when I try to move a folder to replace an existing folder, Vista asks me if I want to merge the folders or cancel. How do I get the old XP behavior where the old folder is just replaced. This issue is especially challenging when moving many folders at once and some of them move but then some of them hit this merge/cancel problem. Thanks!

    Somebody I know expressed irritation today regarding those of us who tend not to use spaces in our filenames, e.g. NamingThingsLikeThis.txt -- despite most modern operating systems supporting spaces in filenames. Are there technical reasons that it's still common to see file names without (appropriate) spaces? If so, what are these technical reasons that spaces in filenames are avoided or discouraged, and in what circumstances are they relevant? The most obvious reason I could think of, and why I typically avoid it, are the extra quotes required on the command line when dealing with such files. Are there any other significant technical reasons?

    What is a good tool to keep track of IT inventory? Systems that are installed and running, parts being ordered, that sort of thing. I'd love a central, web based system (preferably something we can customize) but my searching so far has resulted in a lot of dead open source projects that havn't been updated in a few years and poorly created commercial websites that don't do a very good job describing their product. The software doesn't have to be free or open source - a good commercial alternative is fine. It doesn't even need to be a web-based tool, that's just what I thought would be simplist to find and easiest to deploy. The number of assets that it will be tracking will be in the dozens, so it doesn't have to be a super high-end enterprise solution but it does need to do a better job than an excel sheet in a shared folder (which is our current "solution")

  • How to batch rename files copied from OSX to Windows with ':' in filenames?

    This is really puzzling. I have lots of videos that were stored using Mac OS, and now I have to edit them on Windows XP. I copied files using HFSExplorer. Editing software refuses to open the files with their current names, and so far I have not found a way to batch rename all the files. Names of the files look like this: clip-2009-10-01 21;26;00.mov But I suspect in OSX the time was 21:26:00. I would like to replace the space with an underscore, and semicolons with dash. I've tried several bulk rename applications, with ; and :, but in vain. Also I've tried rename.pl, but also in vain.

    I've been using Download Master on Windows for years and what I liked most about it is that this program can automatically put downloaded files into directories by download date: /Downloads | |--/2012_06_28 | | | |--a.zip | |--b.pdf | ... | |--/2012_06_29 | | | |--c.txt | ... ... I'm looking for something similar for Linux. Is there any free download manager that can do this? I have tried KGet and uGet but they both seem to lack this feature.
