• Fresh install on SSD with Ubuntu and Windows Vista, using whole disk encryption for Ubuntu

  I would like to do a fresh install on a OCZ Vertex Plus R2 SSD 60GB drive I purchased on the cheap. Since the AES-encryption looks like it may not work optimally for this drive, I would like to set up a dual-boot to Windows Vista (the only Windows copy I have for clean install purposes) and Ubuntu 12.04 with the best encryption scheme possible. My plan is to have Windows around just in case I need to use a program that won't work with Wine and Ubuntu as my daily OS with all of my information secured in case the laptop is ever stolen or sold. Although this setup will not provide a lot of space, I think I can squeeze both OSes and have enough for second-computer office tasks. So, my questions are: Which OS should I install first, Ubuntu or Vista? Any special considerations when partitioning the drive? How should I install Ubuntu to ensure full disk encryption for the Linux partition(s) and or my daily computing? Is there a significant performance upgrade with doing a solo install of Ubuntu instead of a dual boot setup? Will TRIM, for example, work correctly? Are there any significant security concerns with going the route of a dual-boot, other than the fact that any activity on Windows may be fully recoverable if the drive is stolen or sold? • We are moving an Access based corporate front-end into a Web-based App

  We have an enterprise application with a front end written in Microsoft Access 2003 that has evolved over the past 6 years. The back end data, and a fair amount of back-end logic is contained within several Microsoft SQL Server databases. This front end app consists of around 180 forms, and over 120,000 lines of code, and interacts with VB.Net DLLs that support various critical functions used by our sales force. The current system makes use of 3 monitors to display various information; the Access app uses COM+ to control Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer for various purposes. The Access front end sometimes occupies 2 screens, automatically resizing itself based on Windows API-reported screen dimensions. The app also uses a Google map to present data to our agents, and allows two-way interactivity with the map through COM+ connectivity to JavaScript contained in the Google map. At the urging of senior management, we are looking to completely rewrite this application using some web-based technology, such as ASP.Net or perhaps a LAMP stack (the thinking with the LAMP stack thing is "free" is pretty cheap). We want to move to a web-based app so we can eliminate the dependency on our physical location for hiring new sales force members. Currently, our main office is full to capacity, and we need to continue growing the company. Does anyone have any thoughts on what would be the best technology to use for a web-based app of this magnitude? Keeping in mind the app is dependent on back-end services on our existing infrastructure. The app handles financial data and personal customer data, among other things. Interesting reading, and has some valid points, but our C.O.O. and contracted Software Architect are pushing for a full web-based app, not a .Net Windows App]

• Microeconomical simulation: coordination/planning between self-interested trading agents

  In a typical perfect-information strategy game like Chess, an agent can calculate its best move by searching the state tree for the best possible move, while assuming that the opponent will also make the best possible move (i.e. Mini-max). I would like to use this approach in a "game" modeling economic activity, where the possible "moves" would be to buy or sell for a given price, and the goal, rather than a specific class of states (e.g. Checkmate), would be to maximize some function F of the agent's state (e.g. F(money, widget) = 10*money + widget). How to handle buy/sell actions that require coordination between both parties, at the very least agreement upon a price? The cheap way out would be to set the price beforehand, maybe based upon the current supply -- but the idea of this simulation is to examine how prices emerge when freely determined by "perfectly rational" agents. A great example of what I do not want is the trading algorithm in SugarScape -- paraphrasing from Growing Artificial Societies p101-102: when a pair of agents interact to trade, they each compute their internal valuations of the goods, then a bargaining process is conducted and a price is agreed to. If this price makes both agents better off, they complete the transaction The protocol itself is beautiful, but what it cannot capture (as far as I can tell) is the ability for an agent to pay more than it might otherwise for a good, because it knows that it can sell it for even more at a later date -- what appears to be called "strategic thinking" in this pape at Google Books Multi-Agent-Based Simulation III: 4th International Workshop, MABS 2003... to get realistic behavior like that, it seems one would either (1) have to build an outrageously-complex internal valuation system which could at best only cover situations that were planned for at compile-time, or otherwise (2) have some mechanism to search the state tree... which would require some way of planning future trades. Note: The chess analogy only works as far as the state-space search goes; the simulation isn't intended to be "zero sum", so a literal mini-max search wouldn't be appropriate -- and ideally, it should work with more than two agents.

  Is there a good way to run a C# application on clientside in lieu of JavaScript? I have done some front end work with JavaScript and backend C# for web developing at an old job, but I am interested in hosting a website myself soon. I have a C# application I would like to be open source, but before people care to download I'd like them to be able to use it. At its basic level it's a simple text editor, but there's much more to it in the nitty gritty. I could write it in JavaScript, but it would require me to keep documentation and up to date changes on JavaScript and C# in that case. I was thinking of creating an AJAX panel and somehow loading my winform application into a frame, but I don't know how or what words to google because I've never done it before except AJAX.

• Migrating Ruby on Rails Website to New Server (Linux)

  I have an existing website that is a Ruby on Rails project. I have another server i need to transfer the existing website too. The server i wish to transfer too was originally hosting the website so has the necessary gems/configuration are installed. I have tar the current releases shared dir from the old server and transfered them over to the new server. I have then unpack the tar in the apps directory to the new location which is a different URL path. My problem is now as you can see below that the path on the current - is pointing to the old url. • mitigating lost emails when switching provider

  were about to change to gmail from a webmail provided by our hosting provider, i understand changing the mx records and all. But my main worry was if there would be any emails that would fall through the gaps of the two systems during change over. Im not familiar with the ins and outs of how the mx record works, is it like a dns record change, ie. it needs to propagate ? If thats the case would there be a period were its left my current email provider but not switched to the new gmail account ? Thus allowing emails not be delivered or worse lost ?

  I'm redesigning a site for a friend on my localhost. His old site is an .asp based site and we're replacing it with a WordPress site on LAMP hosting. The old site sits on domain A and also has another domain, domain B parked on top of it mirroring it. Google has picked up domain B for most of his search engine results and yahoo and bing etc have picked up domain A. The plan is to 301 redirect the the old pages of his site on domain A to the new WordPress versions and park domain B on top of it like before. My question is, will this work, if not what would be a better way to approach it? We'd prefer not to lose any of the search engine listings in the redesign, and the search engines don't appear to have penalized him for duplicate content. Thanks very much in advance!

• Chromebook C720 - issue suspending and booting

  I recently bought an Acer C720 chromebook (Celeron, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD) with the intention of loading Linux and using it as a cheap development laptop while on my holiday. The installation sort of went ok but initially the trackpad didn't work so I ran a script that mostly fixed that. My current issues are: Booting: it still goes to the chrome "unknown os" white screen - I have to press ctrl L - then escape then 1 then wait for 30 secs while it seems to be searching for something. Then Ubunto loads up fine. Any idea how to fix this? Suspend: if I close the lid of the laptop then it doesn't seem to suspend properly. At least when I open the lid the screen appears to be on but the screen is blank with a cursor. Nothing responds on the keyboard and I have to hold the power down to restart it. The suspend from the top menu has the same issue. Moving windows: I don't have a mouse click button so how do I move windows around the screen? Launcher bar: I've set mine to auto hide (which it does) but what exactly do you have to do to get it back? I just repeatedly jab the mouse at the side of the screen and eventually it pops up. I was told by a contracted co-worker who had left that I should try to get the company to pay for this, as it's something they can tell potential investors as a selling point. My question is though; how do I approach this with my boss? I don't want it to sound like I'm looking for another job and want the qualifications to look elsewhere!

We had a client who asked us to review (improve) the data model for his web app, but said that he wants to develop his app in PHP (he knows "a guy" who can do it). When I asked him why he wants to go with PHP, he gave me the standard set of arguments from the 90's: Microsoft is evil, and PHP is free Writing an ASP.NET app is more expensive (software-wise) Why would Facebook use PHP if it was a bad idea? [classic] He had a few more comments about the costs associated with going .NET. The truth is that "Microsoft is expensive" does not hold water any longer, with their "Express" suite, you can develop an ASP.NET app without paying anything for software. When it comes to hosting, you can save a few bucks with PHP over .NET, but that's a small fraction of the projected development costs (we quoted 10-15k). Going back to my question, what arguments would I give to a client in favor of ASP.NET over PHP? [please provide sources for quantitative claims]

• FFmpeg & Installation on phpmyadmin

  I am attempting to have an interface in which people can upload music files and listen to them through the site. The biggest problem obviously is that someone who uploads an audio track in mp3 format into Mozilla wouldn't be able to play it back (since MF doesn't support mp3 playback since I'm using jPlayer). I did some research and found out that I could use command line php using FFmpeg to convert the mp3 to ogg or some other supportable format. I believe I understand (a little bit) how command line php works but I was wondering how I could install it onto phpmyadmin on my hosting service? Could anyone link me to a tutorial or care to explain? I tried googling it but I just couldn't find it.

  I'm in a plan to upgrade ubuntu 8.10 vbox vm servers to LTS(obviously 10.04) as 8.10 has no support. As far as I know I'll be executing the following to upgrade: apt-get install update-manager-core do-release-upgrade anybody could tell me how could I upgrade a ubuntu server from alternate iso image(Is the alternate iso image used for desktop editons the same used for servers?)? I heard it's possible to upgrade an LTS directly to another LTS and how could I do this after upgrading 8.10 to 9.04 then directly to 10.04 skipping 9.10? 8.10 servers are hosting many services/applications/databases like apache2, tomcat6, ldap, mysql, cvs... and I'm not sure that all of them work as ever after the upgrade. If there is any precautions that I've to following before upgrading, please anyone let me know(ofcourse backup and I'm not going to take backup as I will be trying this on a copy of vdi/vmdk vms) Thanks!

• Optimal communication pattern to update subscribers

  What is the optimal way to update the subscriber's local model on changes C on a central model M? ( M + C - M_c) The update can be done by the following methods: Publish the updated model M_c to all subscribers. Drawback: if the model is big in contrast to the change it results in much more data to be communicated. Publish change C to all subscribes. The subscribers will then update their local model in the same way as the server does. Drawback: The client needs to know the business logic to update the model in the same way as the server. It must be assured that the subscribed model stays equal to the central model. Calculate the delta (or patch) of the change (M_c - M = D_c) and transfer the delta. Drawback: This requires that calculating and applying the delta (M + D_c = M_c) is an cheap/easy operation. If a client newly subscribes it must be initialized. This involves sending the current model M. So method 1 is always required. Think of playing chess as a concrete example: Subscribers send moves and want to see the latest chess board state. The server checks validity of the move and applies it to the chess board. The server can then send the updated chessboard (method 1) or just send the move (method 2) or send the delta (method 3): remove piece on field D4, put tower on field D8.
