  • Getting gvim to show unicode

    How to get GVim (v. 7.3. on Windows XP, if that matters) to show Unicode characters? Something along the lines of http://vimcasts.org/episodes/show-invisibles/ (search for listchars to see the little triangle I'm trying to get). I'm using set encoding, set fileencoding, and set fileencodings, all to utf-8, if that helps. I know it must be something simple, but nevertheless, here I am, stuck. Help.

  • why dont my "FN + Volume up/down" keys work?

    i have a toshiba laptop with windows vista, i turned on my computer once and it had a little red x on the volume speaker, i reinstalled the drive(im not sure if i did that right though) and now sounds works. but i cant lower the sound with "FN and Up/Down arrows", or mute. is there a way to fix this somehow? thanks.

  • Show & Hide hidden files on demand in Windows

    A little while ago I discovered that on Ubuntu linux one can display or conceal hidden files on demand at run-time by pressing [Ctrl-H]. This is really handy. Is there anyway this can be had on windows? I'm guessing Windows Explorer is not amenable to this, so I'm open to 3rd party file managers provided they're open source, freeware, or cheap (in order of preference). thanks

  • Asus K55A Windows 8.1 touchpad smart gestures not working

    Took me a bit to realize that since upgrading to 8.1 my touchpad smart gestures (two finger scroll, top down swipe, left in swipe, ect) don't work. I have read up a little online but can't seem to find an answer or fix that 1) sounds trustworthy and 2) is put into language and steps that I understand.   • How can I use a keyfile on a removable USB drive for my encrypted root in Debian?

    Recently set up root encryption with a couple of LVM volumes inside one LUKS volume, and I am just a little confused as to how I would go about getting it to automatically unlock using a keyfile stored on a USB flash drive, I presume I would have to put the drive in the fstab inside my initramfs (if there is one), and add a hook for USB device support. But I digress, essentially, I want to know what I have to do to enable my LUKS volume (containing all of my partitions sans /boot) to unlock using a keyfile stored on a USB flash drive, rather than a manually entered passphrase.

  • Computer suddenly dies; screen displays weird flickering lines, then restarts

    I've been having this terrible problem for a little while and just managed to get a picture of 'dead screen' for the first time and I am posting it to seek help. Randomly, at irregular intervals (typically once a week), while working on something (it's been different things every time) my computer will just suddenly go dead - the screen turns to exactly the picture below (the lines flicker a little bit), it hangs there for a few seconds and then restarts. Obviously this is extremely frustrating and I want to try to stop it. I've searched numerous postings with similar keywords but nothing exactly the same as mine. Does anyone have any idea what might be the cause of this? I would post all my system settings and installed programs but the list is long and I don't know how much relevance each item would be. If you'd like to know something specific, please comment and I'll let you know whatever you need.   • Ubuntu Server VM: copy paste?

    I've installed Ubuntu Server under Virtualbox just to get a nice little shell. I've also installed the VirtualBox "Guest Additions" and set "Shared Clipboard: Bidirectional". I still can't seem to get any copy-paste working. Am I missing something here? I've installed gpm which gives mouse support in server mode (no X), and allows copy-paste using the mouse, but still the VirtualBox integration doesn't work.

Basically the structure of my App looks like this Headdirectory -- -APPBase -SomeMoreStuff -WWWDirectory .htaccess So i need to redirect into the WWWDirectory when i open the Headdirectory. In Apache its done with a htaccess and the following Content : RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^(.*) www/$1 I already tried in Nginx : location /Headdirectory { rewrite ^/(.*) /www/$1; } And i tried to create an Alias but that didnt work...   • iTunes lost my music after re-plugging my external harddisk

    I am storing most of my music on an external hard disk and from time to time I need to unplug this disk. After reconnecting it to my computer and starting iTunes I noticed that the individual songs stored on the external drive are now lost (they have a little exclamation mark next to them). iTunes offers me to locate the songs one by one, but I have thousands of songs. Is there a better solution to reconnect my collection in iTunes?

  • Exchange-Server Query

    First, a little background. I've recently been taken on as a web and software developer for a small company, who has no other in-house IT support. They've been asking my opinion on lots of IT subjects that are quite far out of my comfort zone. I'm definitely not a network admin. Their IT consultancy contractor is pushing them to upgrade their dedicated exchange server, even though it seems like the one they currently have has a lot of life left in it and is running problem free. They say it's "coming to the natural end of it's life". They want to install a monster with a Xeon E5-2420, 32GB RAM, 2x 1TB HDDs, Windows Server 2012 and Microsoft Exchange 2010. They want to charge a small fortune for it. Basically, this system seems massively over the top seeing as it won't be doing anything else other than running as an exchange server for a company with less than 25 email accounts. My employers also have a file server system in-house that hosts three web apps, an SQL server, their local domain, print server and shared folders. That machine is using the same specs as the proposed new one, and it is barely using any of it's potential. I asked if Microsoft Exchange 2010 could be installed on their file server, but they said that MS Exchange can't run on the same system as an SQL server because for some reason they will eat up each others resources (even though the SQL server isn't touching 1% of the current system's CPU or RAM). My question is really, are they trying to rip my employers off? Could MS Exchange be installed on their other server (on a virtual instance or not), or does the old one even need replacing at all? Going with their current suggestion will cost the company in excess of £6k, and it seems entirely unnecessary. I apologies, because I know this is probably a little thin on details, but if I carry on I could end up writing a massive essay that no-one will want to read. I've been doing my research, but I'm not knowledgeable enough make any hard decisions. Let me know if you need any more details. Thank you for any help you can offer. Further Details: The new exchange would need to support Outlook Web App, 25 users, a few public mailboxes, and email exchange with Blackberries.

  • How to back up a Windows Home Server over the network?

    One of the very few reasons I have to physically interact with my Windows Home Server is to back it up to an external hard drive, with the "Backup Server" feature. It would be more convenient to plug the external drive in to a desktop PC, and then do the backup over the network. Is there a way to do this?     Hi, I found that under Ubuntu, WICD and command "/sbin/iwlist wlan0 scan" give a little different list of wireless networks. Windows 7 also gives a slightly different list.   • SBS 2008 Script to connect - disconnect backup disk?

    I want to be able to leave multiple external drives connected to an SBS 2008 server and select which drive is used as a target for the backup without physically connecting/disconnecting the drive. Windows doesn't support this and my testing confirms that if 2 drives are connected there is little to no rotation between the target drives, the backup will run to the last drive it used if it is connected. Anyone have a script that will disconnect and reconnect a physical drive? Thanks!
