• Options to Reformat USB Drive

  I have a 64GB usb thumb drive. When I plug it into a Windows system (I have tried several machines with both Windows 7 and 8), the system attempts to read it and never completes. The drive does not show up in the device manager, nor does it appear in Computer Management - Disk Management. If I click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, however, I do get an option for "Eject Mass Storage Media", although it never accomplishes anything. Also, as long as the USB drive is connected, I cannot access other USB drives or even restart my computer. It seems as though it locks up Windows Explorer. Is there any option to reformat this drive? It was a great drive up until all this craziness began and I would hate to throw it out because it was rather pricey.

  I have a SQL server (MS SQL 2005) in my development environment. I have a suite of unit tests for some .net code that will connect to the database and perform some operations. If the code under test works correctly, then the database should be in the same (or similar) state to how it was before the tests. However, I would like to be able to roll back the database to its state from before the tests run. One way of doing this would be to programmatically use transactions to roll back each test operation, but this is difficult and cumbersome to program; it could easily lead to errors in the test code. I would like to be able to run my tests confidently knowing that if they destroy my tables, I can quickly restore them? What is a good way to save a snapshot of one of my databases with its tables so that I can easily restore the database to it's state from before the test?

• How do I reinforce compression options?

  Shortly after I got my computer, I enabled NTFS compression on it, selecting the option to compress "all files and subfolders". I recently noticed that several folders on my PC are not compressed anymore, including "Program Files" and "Windows". I suspect this happened when I installed Windows 8.1. The problem is, the only way I can think of to fix this would be to uncheck the tick box under "Properties" for my drive, thus decompressing everything on my drive, and then re-check it with the "all files and subfolders" option. Is there a way to compress all the uncompressed folders without first decompressing the compressed folders?

• mysqldump isn't able to export a specific database, phpMyAdmin crashes

  I'm experiencing problems with a database on my server (Note: All other databases work fine). Once I try to export it with mysqldump I get this error: # mysqldump -u root -pXXXXXXXXX databasename > /root/databasename.sql mysqldump: Couldn't execute 'show table status like 'apps'': Lost connection to MySQL server during query (2013) Also, phpMyAdmin throws an error when selecting this database and immediately logs out. However, the web site which uses this database works fine. I can also execute SELECT statements on the table named "apps" from the MySQL shell. I tried restarting the MySQL daemon as well as REPAIR DATABASE and REPAIR TABLE but the problem still persists. I had this problem before, then it disappeared somehow without me doing anything to resolve the issue. Now, the problem is back and I'm simply unable to create a backup of this database. • Ubuntu 13.10 has no Suspend or Hibernate Options

  I have a Lenova Yoga 2 Pro, and I have Ubuntu 13.10 installed. I am having some issues setting the power functions. At the moment I can not suspend or hibernate the laptop. So from Gnome 3.10 I have the option to Log Out, Shutdown & Restart. No option for Suspend / Hibernate. Weirdly however I can use these commands to get the right behaviour sudo pm-suspend sudo pm-hibernate So the laptop knows how to do this, it just is not giving me the option and also when I set "Close screen lid" to suspend, well nothing happens. It feels like there is a "connection" not being made.

• Delete data from a MSSQL standby database?

  Is it possible to delete data from a read only standby database that imports shipped log files? At least in my theory this shouldn't be possible because the deletion would change the LSN and the log shipping should break. What I need is a smaller sized database than the database that ships the logs. So basically I need a way to have the (readonly) standby server storing only the most recent data. Any ideas or recommendations on this?

• Identifying Exchange 2010 regular process that is walking the mailbox database

  I have an Exchange 2010 server running on a SAN-backed platform. The platform does block-level backups based on a snapshot/incremental basis, that only capture changed data. I was surprised to see a regular period of time where the data changes were happening at a high, sustained rate. Due to the way this system works, that can lead to 1.2TB of stored data per month. The regularity implied a scheduled task, but it is not a fixed interval. It is approximately every 26-32hrs. The disks were performing read operations of ~5MB/s and write operations of ~4.5MB/s, for a period of 3-4hrs. The total written data was ~55-60GB. Reading on TechNet, I am wondering if the following is causing this: http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2011/12/14/database-maintenance-in-exchange-2010.aspx#checksumming The somewhat restrictive thing is that the process only happens at most once every 24 hours. I was able to investigate while it was running, finding the following: the process is store.exe it is working on the mailbox database files while running, it is generating .log files (in the mailbox database folder) consistent with database changes the mailbox database is ~60GB in size, which fits with the total data changes on each iteration I have currently switched to a fixed maintenance window, as a test. It's not clear whether this is the cause, as the symptoms fit, but are not conclusive. Does anyone have any suggestions for additional troubleshooting?

• options for physical architecture of rails site regarding caching server or cdn

  I have a rails app that is set on a single server currently. On production, I force_ssl for everything. I am interested in using a caching server for images (I'm fine with css and js being served from origin for time being). Would nginx or varnish (which I have no experience with) be a better solution (for October 2012)? I'd imagine that it would be easy to switch these around while still on this single server architecture. Or would something like cloudfront (which I also have no experience with) make sense for hosting image files? I know this is a vague question but appreciate any current feedback. thx in advance

• Comparing outgoing mail options, self hosted VS google apps in my situation

  I am setting up a small site that has the need to be able to programmatically send mail from time to time. Password resets and things like that. I'm already using google apps to handle my domains email, so now i'm left with the decision between setting up basic SMTP services on my server to send "password reset mails and things like that" OR instead to have the software use google apps to send mail. I like the google apps option as it's less stuff to worry about and seems to fit my needs, i'm trying to figure out what the downsides would be? Thanks for any thoughts

• Spoof database connection to be local instead of remote

  I am trying to connect one of our clients "as is" programs to a remote database instead of a local one, they say that they have coded it to be able to do it, but for some reason the program crashes when trying to connect to a remote database. I don't have the source code so I can't really dig much deeper than that and the company does not provide any upgrades or custom modifications. I can succesfully connect to the database through SqlDbx and HeidiSQL so I know that the server is set up correctly. This is why I need to find a way to spoof a remote connection on port 1433 to appear like a local database connection to the program. I thought about editing the hosts file, but it will most likely crash other programs if I bind localhost to another IP than 127.0.0.1. Any ideas?

• How do I re-configure grub options

  I've searched this topic and I can't find an article with a plausable solution, to my problem. I installed windows 7 first, with 100gb of disk space. I created the necessary partitions via windows. Then I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on the remaining 400gb of disk space. During the Ubuntu installation I installed the ubuntu boot loader on /dev/sda3 which Windows (as expected never granted me the option pre-boot for which OS I wanted to boot). So I re-installed Ubuntu on that /dev/sda3 partition, overriding the windows 7 loader. Now when I boot windows 7, it runs GNU Grub, so like an infinite loop. How can I reconfigure grub to say: /dev/sda is the bootloader. /dev/sda2 is Windows. /dev/sda3 is Ubuntu. Re-installing windows and my partitions isn't an option, purchasing software for windows isn't an option (theres a reason I use linux, it's not because it's free, because you don't have to install lots of shit to get stuff working, and over-all it's a robust OS).

• Other options to "balance source" in haproxy

  I have haproxy listening on several ports and pointed at several backend servers. Ideally, I would like it so that repeated communications to the same port get pointed at the same backend. "balance source" isn't workable because often requests come from the same source. Is this doable? I'm also open to non-haproxy solutions. The protocol being used isn't important but is definitely not http. Just assume its ssh and you shouldn't go wrong.

I deleted the sitecollection I created through newdatabase and bt now when I am creating that site again its getting attached to the new database which got created above not the same one? Any solution for that I tried deleting database which got created after deleting site collection. Now, when I when I am trying to create a site its looking for old database and giving me error as its not able to open it. Any suggestions on this one..?

  I have a database which has 90% of read only tables. 10% of the tables has writable data. We need to scale the ASP.NET application.We need to add more users who will not be writing to the database. We are thinking of adding another server and routing the users who need read only access to that server. Is there a way to replicate just some tables to another database server. So I need select all pages, comments and favourites pages some users and display it in one list, sorted by date. For better perfomance (I think) I changed my structure to this: table USER and PROFILE without changes ACTIVITY (additional table- have common fields: user,date) -id (Primary Key) -user Foreign Key(USER) -date -page Foreign Key(PAGE) -comment Foreign Key(COMMENTS) -favourite_page Foreign Key(FAVOURITES_PAGES) PAGES -id (Primary Key) -page COMMENTS -id (Primary Key) -page Foreign Key(PAGE) -comment FAVOURITES_PAGES -id (Primary Key) -favourite_page Foreign Key(PAGE) So now it is very easy get sorted records from all tables. But I have no only foreign key to PAGES, COMMENTS and FAVOURITES_PAGES in ACTIVITY table - there is about ten Foreign Key fields and in one record only one have value, others have None: ACTIVITY id user date page comment ... 1 2 2010-02-23 None 1 2 1 2010-02-21 1 None .... It is corect solution. When I display about 40 records in one page (pagination) I must wait about one secound, but database is almost emty (a few users and about 100 records in others tables). It is depends on amount records per page - I have checked it, but why it takes too long time, becouse of relationships? The website is built in Python/Django. Any advices/opinion?

• What is a good programming language/environment for Linux database applications?

  I could use some advice on my move from the Windows world to Linux. For my business, I have used VB6 and Microsoft Access with both Access databases and SQL server in the past. The easy to use forms, report writers and programming language were perfect for CRUD apps and analysis for our small hotel/restaurant business. After using Linux at home for some time I would like to convert our small business. Our server is already a Linux box using Samba. I am happy with the OpenOffice.org applications instead of Microsoft Office. The only thing which is holding me back is a desktop database application where I can develop the forms and reports we require. Base does not seem to be up to the job yet from my experience. I would like something like VB.Net with visual studio (express) but I would like to avoid Mono – I just don’t see the point of it. (You can correct me if I’m wrong.) But a good collection of forms, controls and a good report writer would be ideal. I have looked at web based stuff like Ruby on Rails, but I think a webserver for our 5 pc network is overkill. I don’t mind running a proper database on our Ubuntu 9.10 server. I may have exposed a few prejudices above but my mind is open. Any thoughts?

• How can I get a iterable resultset from the database using pdo, instead of a large array?

  I'm using PDO inside a database abstraction library function query. I'm using fetchAll(), which if you have a lot of results, can get memory intensive, so I want to provide an argument to toggle between a fetchAll associative array and a pdo result set that can be iterated over with foreach and requires less memory (somehow). I remember hearing about this, and I searched the PDO docs, but I couldn't find any useful way to do that. Does anyone know how to get an iterable resultset back from PDO instead of just a flat array? And am I right that using an iterable resultset will be easier on memory? I'm using Postgresql, if it matters in this case. . . . • BackOffice Database Application FrontEnd - Program in C#/VB.Net or PHP?

  I'm working on a project where there will be a MySQL database containing data that will mostly be displayed on the web using PHP. However, there is a need here for a back-office data entry application (linked to the same MySQL database) that is feature rich and easy to use. what I'm trying to understand is where we are at with web-based frontends. I find that there are still so many events and features that I can make use of in a Windows Desktop GUI written in something like C#, VB.Net or MS Access. I don't have a lot of experience programming UI for web but it's my impression that it's still more difficult and takes longer to get similar or the same functionality using non-MS web technologies (I dislike ASP.net, sorry) as compared to programming the desktop portion in a traditional desktop application language like C#, VB.Net, or MS Access. jQuery and jQuery UI are definately making things easier. Also, there's very rich online applications like Google Docs and Zoho but it's my impression that these are programmed by some of the top web UI programmers around, not to mention that it takes longer to write it and intensive testing to make it work in all of your target browsers. It also takes extra time and code to "block" browsers that don't meet the requirements. What programming language would you recommend? I know I may not have given enough information here but I'm not sure what I'm missing. If you have questions just leave a comment below so I can edit this post and answer the questions.

• What is a mantainable way of saving "star rating" in a database?

  I'll use the jQuery plugin for presenting the user with a nice interface The request is to display 5 stars, up to a total score of 10 (2 points per star). By now I thought about using 7/10 as a format for that value, but what if at some point in the future I'll receive a request like We would like to give users more choice, let's increase the total score to 20 (so that each star contributes with a maximum of 4 points) I'll end up with a table with mixed values for the "star rating" column: some will be like 7/10 while others will be like 14/20. Is it ok for you to have this difference in the database and deal with it in the logic layer to have it consistent? Or is preferred another way so that querying the table will not result in inconsistent results outside the application? Maybe floating point values could help me, is it better to store that value as a number less than or equal to one? So in each of the two examples the resulting value stored in the database would be 0,7, as a number, not a varchar, which can be queried also outside the application. What do you think?
