  • Thrift and .NET - Is this is right combination?

    I've been evaluating various technologies for a Social Networking project. The Thrift kind of interested me to evaluate. The advantage I see using Thrift is I can even come with C++ services when the computation in any such business is huge and may not fits with .NET etc., Please suggest your comments. My Questions: Is the open-sourced one is production-ready? Is it the right stack for services layer to choose when the application (GUI) is primarily gets developed in ASP.NET and DB is SQL Server?   • Stop a custom submit button from firing the form validation on a CCK form

    I've added a submit button inside a fieldgroup on a CCK form using hook_form_alter as follows: function mymodule_form_alter(&$form, $form_state, $form_id) { if ($form_id == 'object_node_form') { $form['group_wikipedia']['search'] = array( '#type' => 'submit', '#value' => t('Search Wikipedia'), '#name' => 'searchwiki', '#submit' => array('mymodule_searchwiki_submit'), ); } } When I press the button, the validation handlers for the full form eg. checks for required fields, run as though I have pressed the 'Submit' button at the end of the form. I thought that changing the #name property from 'op' to 'searchwiki' would prevent this kind of mix-up, but not so. Does anyone know a workaround for this?

  • Best practices for sending automated daily emails from web service

    I am running a web service that currently sends confirmation emails out to new users via the gmail smtp servers. As I'm only getting a few new users each day, this hasn't been a problem. I've recently added new features to the webapp that will require a customized message to be sent out to each user every day. Think of this as similar to the regular messages LinkedIn sends out that give you a status report on the activity in your network. Every user's message will be different. With thousands of users, this means thousands of unique messages will be sent each day. Edit: I've since found that these types of email are called "transactional or relationship messages". Spamtacular has a good article on differentiating between marketing and transactional email. I don't think using gmail's smtp servers will cut it anymore, but I don't know that for sure. I don't know what gmail's maximum outgoing messages per account is (it might be 100/day), but they limit outgoing mail to 500 recipients per message. I'm not sending a single message to 500 recipients, but I'm going to be sending 1000's of customized messages with each recipient getting one per day. I'm interested to learn any best practices for doing this (especially for Java-based webapps). Here are some of my thoughts and concerns on it: Should I set up my own outgoing mail server? If I do this, it seems like I'll have all sorts of other issues to worry about, such as preventing mail server abuse, monitoring bounces, allowing ways to opt-out of emails, etc. Are there any tools or services to help with this? Maybe something like OpenEMM or a services like MailChimp? But those seem focused more toward email marketing campaigns. I don't think I should have the webapp itself handle sending emails as it currently is for new user signups. I'm thinking I should setup a separate messaging server that can access the same backend/datastore as the webapp. Thoughts on this? Should I consider setting up some sort of message queueing service to help with this, such as JMS, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, etc.? Do I need to provide users a way to opt-out? Do I need to flag these as bulk messages? I don't really consider these email marketing messages, but I'm unsure what is considered appropriate or proper netiquette. Any advice is appreciated. I'm also very interested in open source tools or web services that simplify things and could help me to ramp up as quickly as possible. Thanks!

  • Content management recommendations for website?

    Hello I am working on a website that has a wide range of content. (News, FAQs, tutorials, blog, articles, product pages etc.) Currently a lot of this content is static or uses special-purpose scripts. I would like to move most of it under the wing of a single content manager. I have not used out of the box content management software previously so am hoping for some recommendations on what options there are and what might be best suited to a project like this. Whether the manager is open source or commercial, and what language it is written in, are not so important. I can customize the environment as necessary. The most important things are: 1) The ability to manage a wide variety of content. 2) The ability to create highly customized templates for a single page of content or entire category of content. 3) Flexibility. ie The ability to integrate managed content with other pages not controlled by the content manager.   • scvmap, disco, xsd, wsdl, svcinfo and datasource files

    We have a WEb Service named, let's say Foo. So there is a Foo.svc file and a code behind Foo.svc.cs. We add a silverlight project and wish to use the Foo.svc services so we add a Service Reference and call it's namespace FooBar. This creates the following files : Reference.cs Reference.svcmap Foo.xsd Foo.disco configuration.svcinfo Foo.wsdl Also various *.datasource files. Over time we update the Foo.svc and add more Web Services (methods and interfaces) and the number of files in the FooBar directory is growing. I have 26 Foo(nn).xsd files in this directory - where nn = 1 to 26. My configuration.svcinfo is upto configuration91.svcinfo. My question is this? Do any of these files need to be version controlled? Can they all be deleted each time you do a build \ deploy (as long as you do an update service reference)?

This way I can see which items are most clicked on. The logic to add it to a db etc is easy to do. What I need to know is, how do I plug into the "add to cart" part. I.e. How do I know when this has been clicked?

I was able to create menu items at the same time as the nodes, and they appeared in the correct menu, but not in the correct place in the hierarchy. What am I missing?

Meaning solutions that are either more readable or faster(optimized) or simply best-practice. Current solution: multiple tables selected, many conditional statements: SELECT u.userID AS memberid, u.name AS first_name, pv1.value AS fname, pv2.value as lname FROM users AS u, profile_values AS pv1, profile_values AS pv2, WHERE u.userID = pv1.userID AND pv1.fid = 3 AND u.userID = pv2.userID AND pv2.fid = 45; Thanks for the help!

  • Is there a way to rewrite a url to go to a file stored in the filefield of the node

    I have a custom content-type called 'document' On this content-type, I have a File field where a user can upload a document. Assume the path to a document node is /somesite/document/tester I would like to be able to link to /somesite/document/tester/file and it automatically go to the file that is uploaded to the file field of the node. I have tried the url_alter module and am able to get the correct url of the document but when it tries to go there, it says not found. It seems that my redirection is still trying to be rewritten with pathauto or something. Ulitamtely, we want to have a consistent url for these documents so that a user can upload a replacement document and we can still use the same urls. Any ideas?

  • Is it possible to have anonymous purchases with ubercart without the creation of a new user account?

    I would like to be able to have anonymous users purchase a product but not have a new account created when they purchase it. Unfortunately the creation of a new user seems to be very tightly integrated into ubercart's ordering system. And, because the order module is part of the ubercart core, it's behavior cannot be overridden easily. One possibility for overriding is the creation of a new user account by supplying ubercart with an bogus anonymous account: hook into hook_form_alter at $form_id == 'uc_cart_checkout_review_form' because this is where ubercart first associates the $order to an uid. Add our submit function to the queue: //Find out if the user is anonymous: global $user; if ($user->uid == 0 ) { //Load a previously created anonymous user account $anonymous_user = mymodule_get_anonymous_user(); //create the order and assign our anonymous_user_id to it $order = uc_order_load($_SESSION['cart_order']); $order->uid = $anonymous_user->uid; uc_order_save($order); //Assign the global user our anonymous user uid $user->uid = $anonymous_user->uid; } But what I really need is to be able to have an anonymous purchase without being forced to create a new account, this solution does not work for me. Apart from which, using this technique will automatically login the anonymous_user into our bogus_anonymous_user account. Which is definitely something I don't want. Is there a better non-duct-tape way around the creation of a new user account for anonymous purchases in ubercart?. AND FYI - at this point I'm kind of stuck with ubercart so I cannot use something else. Thanks! D

    I'm using Fedex's web services and getting an annoying error right up front before I can actually get anywhere. There was an error in serializing body of message addressValidationRequest1: 'Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1). error CS0030: Cannot convert type 'FedEx.InterOp.AddressValidationServiceReference.ParsedElement[]' to 'FedEx.InterOp.AddressValidationServiceReference.ParsedElement' error CS0029: Cannot implicitly convert type 'FedEx.InterOp.AddressValidationServiceReference.ParsedElement' to 'FedEx.InterOp.AddressValidationServiceReference.ParsedElement[]' '. Please see InnerException for more details. I'm using .NET 3.5 and get a horrible named class generated for me (I'm not sure why it isn't just AddressValidationService): AddressValidationPortTypeClient addressValidationService = new ...; on this class I make my web service call: addressValidationService.addressValidation(request); This is when I get this error. The only references I can find to this error come from ancient 1.1 projects. In my case my DLL has references to System.Web and System.Web.Services which seemed to be an issue back then.

I would like to pass a string to the Save method and have it gzip the string and upload it to Amazon S3 without ever being written to disk. The current method inefficiently reads/writes to disk in between.   • Best ASP.NET reporting engine with custom reports creation ability

    We need to choose the reporting engine for our ASP.NET application. The main functional requirement is an ability for end users (not programmers, just normal users) to create custom reports. We will be using SQL Server as a database so I am aware of some options: SQL Server Reporting services, Crystal Reports, Active Reports, even WindwardReports. But frankly speaking I've never used any of those except Reporting services and it's quite difficult to choose which one suits the best to customer needs of custom reports creation.   • How to restrict access to my web service?

    I have http://example.com/index.html, which from within the HTML uses JavaScript to call a web services at http://example.com/json/?a=...&b=... The web service returns to index.html a JSON array of information to then be displayed on index.html. Since anyone can view the source code for index.html and see how I'm calling the JSON web services (http://example.com/json/), how do I prevent people from calling my JSON web service directly? Since the web service is essentially an open read into my database, I don't want people to abuse the web service and start DoS my server, fetching more information than they should, etc..
