• NVIDIA x server - "sudo nvidia config" does not generate a working 'xorg.config'

  I am over 18 hours deep on this challenge. I got to this point and am stuck. very stuck. Maybe you can figure it out? Ubuntu Version 12.04 LTS with all the updates installed. Problem: The default settings in "etc/X11/xorg.conf" that are generated by the "nvidia-xconfig" tool, do not allow the NVIDIA x server to connect to the driver in my "System Settings Additional Driver window". (that's how I understand it. Lots of information below). Symptoms of Problem "System Settings Additional Driver" window has drivers, but the nvidia x server cannot connect/utilize any of the 4 drivers. the drivers are activated, but not in use. When I go to "System Tools Administration NVIDIA x server settings" I get an error that basically tells me to create a default file to initialize the NVIDIA X server (screen shot below). This is the messages the terminal gives after running a "sudo nvidia-xconfig" command for the first time. It seems that the generated file by the tool i just ran is generating a bad/unusable file: If I run the "sudo nvidia-xconfig" command again, I wont get an error the second time. However when I reboot, the default file that is generated (etc/X11/xorg.conf) simply puts the screen resolution at 800 x 600 (or something big like that). When I try to go to NVIDIA x server settings I am greeted with the same screen as the screen shot as in symptom 2 (no option to change the resolution). If I try to go to "system settings display" there are no other resolutions to choose from. At this point I must delete the newly minted "xorg.conf" and reinstate the original in its place. This is a triple boot computer and not a VM. Attempts With Not Success on My End: 1) Tried to append the "xorg.conf" with what I perceive is missing information and obviously it didn't fly. 2) All the other stuff I tried got me to this point. 3) See if this link is helpful to you (I barely get it, but i get enough knowing that a smarter person might find this useful): http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/lucid/man1/nvidia-xconfig.1.html 4) I am completely new to Linux (40 hours over past week), but not to programming. However I am very serious about changing over to Linux. When you respond (I hope someone responds...) please respond in a way that a person new to Linux can understand. 5) By the way, the reason I am in this mess is because I MUST have a second monitor running from my laptop, and "System Settings Display" doesn't recognize my second display. I know it is possible to make the second display work in my system, because when I boot from the install CD, I perform work on the native laptop monitor, but the second monitor shows a purple screen with Ubuntu in the middle, so I know the VGA port is sending a signal out. If this is too much for you to tackle please suggest an alternative method to get a second display. I don't want to go to windows but I cannot have a single display. I am really fudged here. I hope some smart person can help. Thanks in advance. Mike. **********************EDIT #1********************** More Details About Graphics Card I was asked "which brand of nvidia-card do you have exactly?" Here is what I did to provide more info (maybe relevant, maybe not, but here is everything): 1) Took my Lenovo W520 right apart to see if there is an identifier on the actual card. However I realized that if I get deep enough to take a look, the laptop "won't like it". so I put it back together. Figuring out the card this way is not an option for me right now. 2) (My computer is triple boot) I logged into Win7 and ran 'dxdiag' command. here is the screen shot: 3) I tried to look on the lenovo website for more details... but no luck. I took a look at my receipts and here is info form receipt: System Unit: W520 NVIDIA Quadro 1000M 2GB 4) In win7 I went to the NVIDIA website and used the option to have my card 'scanned' by a Java applet to determine the latest update for my card. I tried the same with Ubuntu but I can't get the applet to run. Here is the recommended driver from from the NVIDIA Applet for my card for Win7 (I hope this shines some light on the specifics of the card): Quadro/NVS/Tesla/GRID Desktop Driver Release R319 Version: 320.00 WHQL Release Date: 3.5.2013 5) Also I went on the NVIDIA driver search and looked through every possible combination of product type + product series + product to find all the combinations that yield a 1000M card. My card is: Product Type: Quadro Product Series: Quadro Series (Notebooks) Product: 1000M ***********************EDIT #2******************* Additional Symptoms Another question that generated more symptoms I previously didn't mention was: "After generating xorg.conf by nvidia-xconfig, go to additional drivers, do you see nvidia-304?" 1) I took a screen shot of the "additional drivers" right after generating xorg.conf by nvidia-xconfig. Here it is: 2) Then I did a reboot. Now Ubuntu is 600 x 800 resolution. When I logged in after the computer came up I got an error (which I always get after generating xorg.conf by nvidia-xconfig and rebooting) 3) To finally answer the question - No. There is no "NVIDIA-304" driver. • Why are SW engineering interviews disproportionately difficult?

  First, some background on me. I have a PhD in CS and have had jobs both as a software engineer and as an R&D research scientist, both at Very Large Corporations You Know Very Well. I recently changed jobs and interviewed for both types of jobs (as I have done in the past). My observation: SW engineer job interviews are way, way disproportionately more difficult than CS researcher job interviews, but the researcher job is higher paying, more competitive, more rewarding, more interesting, and has a higher upside. Here's a typical interview loop for researcher: Phone interview to see if my research is in alignment with the lab's researcher In-person, give presentation on my recent research for one hour (which represents maybe 9 month's worth of work), answer questions In-person one-on-one interviews with about 5 researchers, where they ask me very reasonable questions on my work/publications/patents, including: technical questions, where my work fits into related work, and how I can extend my work to new areas Here's a typical interview loop for SW engineer: Phone interview where I'm asked algorithm questions and maybe do some coding. Pretty standard. In-person interviews at the whiteboard where they drill the F*** out of you on esoteric C++ minutia (e.g. how does a polymorphic virtual function call work), algorithms (make all-pairs-shortest-path algorithm work for 1B vertices), system design (design a database load balancer), etc. This goes on for six or seven interviews. Ridiculous. Why would anyone be willing to put up with this? What is the point of asking about C++ trivia or writing code to prove yourself? Why not make the SE interview more like the researcher interview where you give a talk about what you've done? How are technical job interviews for other fields, like physics, chemistry, civil engineering, mechanical engineering?

• Dell Studio 1737 Overheating

  I am using a Dell Studio 1737 laptop. I have been running Linux and have ran Windows recently for a very long time. I upgraded to the 10.10 distribution and since that distro, it seems that for some reason all Linuxes want to push my laptop to extremes. I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 since I heart that it contains kernel fixes for overheating issues. 12.04 will actually eventually cool the system, but that is after the fans run to the point it sounds like a jet aircraft taking off and the laptop makes my hands sweat. In trying to combat the heat problems I have done the following: I installed the propriatery driver for my ATI Mobility HD 3600. I have tried both the one in the Additional Drivers and also tried ATI's latest greatest version. If I don't install this my laptop will overheat and shut off in minutes. Both seem to perform similarly, but the heat problem remains. I have tried limiting the CPU by installing the CPUFreq Indicator. This does help keep the machine from shutting off, but the heat is still uncomfortable to be around the machine. I usually run in power saver mode or run the cpu at 1.6 GHZ just to error on safety.   Hello, I'm exploring some technologies and JSP with JSF 2.0 and Primefaces seems really cool. I'm new to all of these, but I'm a fast learner. I wondering if I can create the web app I want withh JSP/JSF/Primefaces or should I be looking to different technologies? If I should, which ones do you recommend? Here's a basic description of the app: Users log in with their username and password (maybe I can somehow incorporate google OPENID)? With a really nice UI, they will be presented a large list of questions specific to a certain category, for example, JSP. When they click on any of these questions, a little input opens up below it to allow the user to put in a link. If the link they enter has the same question on that webpage the URL points to, they will be awarded one point. This question then disappears and gets added to a different page that has a list of all correctly linked questions. On the right side of the screen, there will be a leaderboard with the usernames of the people with the top ten points. Is this possible with JSP/JSF/Primefaces, or should I be looking elsewhere for a different web technology? The idea is relatively simple - to be able to compile links to external websites for specific questions. I know I can build the UI easily with Primefaces. What I'm not sure is if JSP/JSF gives the ability to parse HTML at a certain URL to see if it contains words. I can do this with python easily by using urllib. Any help would be appreciated!!! What would be more helpful than a "Yes" or "No" answer would be links to where I can see sample code of external HTML parsing. Your input is truly appreciated! Thanks!

• Ubuntu 12.04 + Wifi not working

  i'm having problems connecting over wireless. At the moment, I'm using wicd. It seems to get stuck on "Verifying AP association...". Without wicd I can get the connection up and ping the Net - but if I take eth0 down (ifconfig eth0 down), my wireless goes away too (same result if I unplug the wire instead). wicd is the only way I can bring eth0 back (which is the main reason I'm using it) - ifconfig eth0 and/or ifup eth0 do not re-enable the connection (I just discovered it leaves out the gateway. Adding the gateway back in re-enables the connection including wifi; I didn't want to delete the info about wicd above in case it gives someone an idea.) • Oracle Tutor - Is Anyone Reading Your Documentation?

  If you are responsible for documenting your business practices, wouldn't it be nice to know if anyone is using the documentation? If the employees find it useful? You might want to consider surveying the users of the documentation on a regular basis. There are a number of free survey tools online (search for "free survey tools"), and you can have a survey ready in a matter of minutes. It's as simple as gathering a list of questions and a list of email addresses. For the questions, here are some suggestions. How often do you access the policy and procedure site? How useful is the site? How easy is it to navigate the site? How often are your questions answered on the site? What suggestions do you have to make the site more useful? You may want to consider just asking a few questions each month so that employees can complete the survey in less than 5 minutes (you'll get more responses). Make sure you have several comment boxes in the survey so that the employees can give suggestions. As the users of your documentation, the employees may have some terrific ideas that will enhance the usability of your policy and procedure site.   What is a reasonable goal in terms of traffic for my Flex 3 site: www.brainpinata.com Since I began a couple of months ago, I've gotten roughly 5500 ad views and 280 ad clicks. And the ad revenue is a whopping $4.80. (I don't use Google Adsense). I advertise my site using Google Adwords to try to build traffic. My budget is $10/day. What should I do? a) Push the marketing. Add a blog. Try to get backlinks, contact blogs, start a Facebook page, tweet, etc. b) Google is only indexing the static content in the SWF. The questions/answers are pulled from a mySQL database. So, Google doesn't index 99% of the content. Should I re-do the site in HTML/Javascript and hard-code the questions for each puzzle? (This would be a challenge as I don't know javascript worth squat.) Or should I hard-code the questions in XML and put them in the Flex app? If I put the questions in an XML file it's roughly 500 KB. Other ideas? c) Should I switch ad networks? (I currently get about 100 visitors a day). My ad network pays so little that if I were to make even $500/month, I would need 550,000 ad views/month, which seems impossible. If I go ahead and switch ad networks, I need to find one that allows iFrames as I've got a Flex website. Which ad networks permit their ads to be shown in iFrames? d) Should I cut and run? • In an online questionnaire, what is a best way to design a database for keeping track of users all attempts?

  We have a web app where users can take online exams. Exam admin will create a questionnaire. A questionnaire can have many Questions. Each question is a multiple choice question (MCQ). Lets say an admin creates a questionnaire with 10 questions. Users attempt those questions. Now, unlike real exams users can attempt single questionnaire multiple times. And we have to keep track of his all attempts. e.g. User_id Questionnaire_id question_id answer attempt_date attempt_no 1 1 1 a 1 June 2013 1 1 1 2 b 1 June 2013 1 1 1 1 c 2 June 2013 2 1 1 2 d 2 June 2013 2 Now it can also happen that after user has attempted same questionnare twice, admin can delete a question from same questionnaire, but users attempt history should still have reference to that so that user can see his that question in his attempt history in spite of admin deleting that question. If user now attempts this changed questionnaire he should see only 1 question. User_id Questionnaire_id question_id answer attempt_date attempt_no 1 1 1 a 3 June 2013 3 Also, after this user modified some part of question, users attempt history should show question before modification while any new attempt should show modified question. How do we manage this at the database level? My first gut feeling was that, For deletes, do not do physical delete, just make a question inactive so that history can still keep track of users attempt. For modifications, create versions for questions and each new attempt refres to latest version of each question and history keeping reference to version of question at attempt time.

So Google seems to strip the fragment, which results in exactly the same page under another URL (= containing the answer ID /652058 as suffix), and indexes it, too -- despite rel-canonical and duplicate content. Shouldn’t Google recognize this and only index the canonical variant? And what could be the reason why Stack Exchange includes the answer ID in the URL path, and not only in the fragment (resulting in various URL variants for the same page)?

  We have a wcf service, that expects to return a huge XML data. It worked ok in testing, but in production it failed with error  "Maximum number of items that can be serialized or deserialized in an object graph is '65536'. Change the object graph or increase the MaxItemsInObjectGraph quota."The MSDN article about   dataContractSerializer xml configuration  element  correctly  describes maxItemsInObjectGraph attribute default as 65536, but documentation for of the DataContractSerializer.MaxItemsInObjectGraph property and DataContractJsonSerializer.MaxItemsInObjectGraph Property are talking about Int32.MaxValue, which causes confusion, in particular because Google shows properties articles before configuration articles.When we changed the value in WCF service configuration, it didn't help, because the similar change must be ALSO done on client.There are similar posts:http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6298209/how-to-fix-maxitemsinobjectgraph-error/6298356#6298356You need to set the MaxItemsInObjectGraph on the dataContractSerializer using a behavior on both the client and service. • How do you coordinate with co-workers to give a balanced interview?

  My company has been conducting a lot of interviews lately for candidates with various experience levels, ranging from interns to senior candidates. We put our candidates through five 45 minute interview sessions where we try to ask a range of questions. One person always asks the same questions that test logic and communication. The rest typically split time between a whiteboard coding question and a discussion of previous projects, technologies the interviewee has worked with, and what he/she is looking for a job. Generally, we know the range of questions that other people on the loop will ask. Sometimes we switch things up and end up having redundancies. Today, 3 interviewers asked tree-related questions. Other times, we've all honed in on the same project on a resume and have had the interviewee talk about it with everyone. I think a smooth interview process would help us learn more about the candidate while giving the impression to the candidate that we have our act together as a team. How do you coordinate with others in the interview loop to give a balanced interview?

• How do I sell Oracle? It all starts with the database

  Partner sales reps often ask me how they start a conversation with their customers around Oracle. The first question should be, "are you running an Oracle database?" Much of what we do at Oracle is intended to optimize our customers' investments in the Oracle database. Many of our acquisitions, new features in existing products, new applications, are often designed to improve the experience of the 400,000 Oracle database customers worldwide. Once you find an Oracle database customer, the next set of questions are much easier, but depend on your expertise: License Management, Upsell, and Services. Let's start with License Management: Have there been any changes to your infrastructure since you purchased the database licenses? Have you upgraded the servers on which the Oracle database is running? Have the number of users or employees increased since the last license purchase? Yes to any of these questions will lead to investigating correct licensing. The goal is to provide a "soft" license review. Oracle generally does not require any license keys to install our software, so we need to help our customers with compliance. Correct licensing is essential to managing costs, and can provide a great way to efficiently manage IT spend. You might want to contact your local Oracle Channel Manager or VAD for licensing assistance. Or, review the Software Investment Guide. Naturally, these questions can lead to upsell opportunities. If your customer has invested in Oracle technology to manage their data, that data is essential to running their business. We'll take a look at those upsell questions in a later blog post.

• Apt-Get Update: failure to fetch; can't connect to any sources

  I realize there are dozens of "apt-get update: failure to fetch" questions (I read through all I could find), but my present circumstance is unique to 12.04 and it affects all sources; not just launchpad. Additionally, I've tried several different servers in Europe and the U.S. as well as the "main server" (wherever that is) and they all yield the same result: I can't connect to any software sources. Additionally, I'm fairly certain the problem stems from the upgrade from 11.10-12.04 I performed this morning, as updates worked immediately before. Updates from the Update Manager worked fine and I could download some things (mutter) from the Software Center without incident, which makes me think I can connect to some subset of the Ubuntu servers (however, several other Ubuntu servers--like extras--and some canonical servers are listed as 'unable to connect').
