• Setting up IIS7 to mimic a GoDaddy shared hosting plan

  I host multiple domains on a GoDaddy shared hosting account. I would like to setup a website locally in IIS 7 that mimics the setup of my hosted account so that I can test and debug applications locally before deploying, as debugging after deploying, or discovering there are issues after deploying is frustrating. I have created a folder WebRoot, at put my main application in that folder. I created a website in IIS 7 and pointed it at that folder. I setup bindings with a fake domain, and created a matching entry in my hosts file to make the fake domain point at my 127.0.0.1. I then created a folder www.otherdomain.com under webroot. I then created an application underneath my website, and pointed it at this folder. I can't find how I can add bindings to the web application to have it referenced as a different fake domain, rather than a subdirectory under my root domain. What would be the proper way to setup IIS to best simulate the environment on the GoDaddy servers.

• Domain user periodically can't login, but only temporarily?

  Ok, this is a strange one that I'm having trouble replicating letting alone solving. I have a user who uses two computers (both XP sp3) on the domain with a roaming profile. She has no problems on her personal computer but occasionally needs to use a shared computer. On this shared computer she is sometimes (~once a week) unable to login with the error message "Username or password incorrect. Check username password and domain and try again." I've checked when this happens and her username and password are indeed entered correctly. Now the strange part - if someone else logs in to the computer (which so far always works) and then logs out she is able to log in after that. This problem began after a recent and long overdue password change. I've tried to replicate this problem after a reboot, or after another user logs out to no avail. Any suggestions on troubleshooting or replicating this one? Anyone experienced something similar?

• Account not getting completed deleted within linux

  I've got a nas box running some flavour of linux 2.6.31.8.nv+v2 with an arm processor. It has got a samba share called 'all' that has full read write access to everyone. However one Windows machine cannot access it without prompting for authentication and I found out from the logs that the windows account matches a local account on the nas box. What I then went to do is delete the local account on the nas. I can see that /home,/etc/password + /etc/shadow the account doesn't exist anymore. However the samba logs, shows that it thinks it is still there as it says account is disabled. I've tried rebooting both nas + windows box. Is there somewhere else that it stores account information? I logged on with a different account on that Windows machine and I can access the share fine. The smb logs shows that it can't find the user and then allows anonymous access.

  I've set up IIS6 with FastCGI to use php-cgi.exe. I have some php websites by external parties, that I'm trying to run in a test environment. One of the websites just plain gives me a FastCGI Error Page. Question: Is there some way to enable logging somewhere so that I can get a bit more information on this problem? I have looked in Eventlog IIS Website log (c:\windows\system32\Logfiles) PHP log But no results, except the IIS Website log mentions a return of a 500 page. Question: Is there any other way to debug/check where things might be going wrong? Here is what the page looks like: FastCGI Error The FastCGI Handler was unable to process the request. • SQL connection is too slow

  We have a business web application in ASP.NET + SQL Server 2008. In the beginning, SQL Server and IIS were on the same machine. Now we bought another machine. Current configuration is IIS machine plus SQL Server machine, and they are connected by a 1gb LAN connection. With this configuration our web application is slower than before. Max bandwidth is 1-2% of network, about 15mbps. When we use another threads to the same SQL Server from the same IIS machine, network use is higher. So this is no problem with SQL Server. Ho we can make higher bandwidth for this SQL connection? • Can expire_logs_days be less than 1 day in MySQL?

  So... yesterday I received an "after the fact email" about a campaign that has started for one of the services that I run. Now the DB server is getting hammered, hard, to the tune of about 300mb/min in binary logging for the replicate. As you could imagine, this is chewing up space at a fairly tremendous rate. My normal 7 day expiry of binary logs just isn't cutting it. I've resorted to truncating logs to just the last for 4 hours with(I'm verifying that replication is up to date with mk-heartbeat): PURGE MASTER LOGS BEFORE DATE_SUB( NOW(), INTERVAL 4 HOUR); I'm just running that from cron every few hours to weather the storm, but it made me question the minimum value for expire_logs_days. I haven't come across a value that is less than 1, but that doesn't mean that it isn't possible. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/server-system-variables.html#sysvar_expire_logs_days gives the type as being numeric, but doesn't indicate if it's expecting integers.

• Using rsyslog to create different log files for different processes

  Scenario: I am running a cluster of machines. Each machine runs various python programs with a unique (across the cluster), but dynamically set, ID. Right now, they are all logging locally. So, I might have logs that look like: process_5.log process_6.log for processes that had ID's 5 and 6. Another machine may have: process_20.log process_25.log I wish to forward these logs to a logserver running rsyslogd. Python's logging facility has a nice syslog handler, so I understand how I could connect to the remote server. What I haven't figured out is how to use templating/DynFile to maintain log separation. e.g. on the logserver, I will want to see: process_5.log process_6.log process_20.log process_25.log which correspond to the logs of the same name on the sending machine. Is there a way to pull this off with rsyslogd templating?

  We are currently having ~100 servers and all of them are using remote syslog, so we have aggregated all logs on one server. The most questioned problem from our support team is: Has an email from .... to ... been delivered? I'd like to give to our support team access to some logging tool and some guide for searching in logs. What would you have recommended me? Or, do you know any other alternatives to test? The problem of grepping logs is that there is not sender and recipient address on one line. So I supposed, there might by some aggregation by email id.

  I can open a cmd window and start a tail by entering something like this: tail -f C:\Oracle\WebCenter\Sites\11gR1\Sites\11.1.1.6.1\logs\sites.log This is probably a stupid question, but how do I do this in a batch file? It should be easy but it's not working - I have tried a couple variations and no success. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong here? • Why do I need to add my application pool identity to the IIS_IUSRS group?

  I'm setting up a .NET v4.0 web application on a Windows 2008 R2/IIS 7.5 server that uses a domain account for the application pool identity. When I access the site, I get the following error: The current identity () does not have write access to 'C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files' According to this: http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/140/understanding-built-in-user-and-group-accounts-in-iis/ the identity of the worker process is added to the IIS_IUSRS group when the process starts. This seems to work fine for the existing .NET v2.0 applications I have running on the same server (I have not had to add their domain account application pool identities to IIS_IUSRS group). This does not seem to be the case for the first .NET v4.0 web application I'm setting up. Once I add the identity to the group, everything works fine. I suspect something is not configured correctly that is forcing me to do this. I would like to understand this before rolling out more sites/servers. Thanks in advance for your help...

• What can cause a black or blank screen when pressing logout or switch user in windows 7

  The situation I have here is related to a brand new dell machine with a GTX260 video card. Put simply after one user logs in when that user either 'switch users' or 'logs out' windows goes to a black/blank screen. The TV screen that is used with this computer previously functioned fine with fast user switching on an XP machine. The new computer is windows 7. The TV is not outputting any error messages like 'no signal' or anything else that would be displayed if the computer was off. You can fix the problem by cycling the input on television, after cycling the input the welcome screen appears as normal. What I want to know is what on earth is windows doing that would cause the video card to stop sending the same signal to the monitor when the user logs off or switches users. I mean as far as I can tell the resolution is identical between windows and the welcome screen. Or perhaps if somebody has experienced this before a fix would be great too.

From what I can tell the file doesn't record these errors anymore, either that or it's so buried in SSL logs that I just can't find them. • IIS7.5 website (mostly) inaccessible from the outside world

  On the network firewall, I opened up port 80 and forwarded it to the Windows Server 2008 R2 running IIS 7.5. Port 80 is open in the Windows firewall. On the LAN, the website is accessible without any trouble. When accessed from the outside, I can access it only 3 times every few hours before access to it cuts out from the outside. There aren't any access limits in IIS or the network's firewall as far as I can tell. IIS is running PHP 5.3. The default website has been deleted. The bindings for the website's domain are set for mydomain.com *:80 and mydomain.com 192.168.0.3:80

• Firefox unable to load SSL Certificate Chain, while Chrome, IE do

  I created a certificate for our IIS 6 by sending a request (created with openssl) to our organization's CA. I already had trouble to integrate the private key into that certificate, that has been solved, see SO question IIS 6.0 now uses the certificate (with TSL v1 and SSL v3), that is the 4th in cert hierarchy. Now, if I access the intranet site, chrome accepts the certificate, so does IE, but Firefox complains about an insecure connection and wants me to add an exceptional rule. If I look into the certificate, how FF presents it to me, I cannot see any of the three issuers. How can this be? If I connect via openssl s_client -showcerts -connect... I only see my own certificate too, which is said to be not verified. I am quite confused now. Where's the mistake and how can I make FF accept certificate without forcing our users to add that exceptionrule? Maybe do I have to add all the three issuer certificates into cert store of the win2003 server that hosts IIS 6.0 ??

  i am supporting a number of bespoke applications at the minute and searching through their very non standard logs is a nightmare, so im looking for a tool which can do the following - load large text files search through multiple files at once and display all results can search with regex can be used to view and search unstructured text files There are some great looking log tools available but they all seem to be focused on structured logs, where the logs i deal with most days are just flat text files. I am currently using notepad++ but that has its own annoyances so im hoping there is a dedicated log analysis tool that i havent found yet.

• When I remove the SSL port 443 from IIS my website stops loading, how can I have it just work with only port 80 and no SSL?

  I am trying to disable SSL, I delete the 443 port so there is only an entry for port 80 and now the site won't load at all. If I re-add the 443 configuration it loads fine. What is causing it to require that? Why can't I set it up to run without SSL? Instead of just failing it should just load the page without HTTPS. If I disable port 443 and then I browse via HTTP, it STILL fails even though I am not trying to use HTTPS. What gives? When/where/how does it decide to use SSL?

  I was having some very frustrating behaviour on our build server and while I found a number of articles online with similar error messages none of them helped me.  I thought I would just explain this here incase if helps me or anyone else in future.The error message we were getting is:There was no endpoint listening at http://localhostStubs.ExternalApplication/SampleService.svc that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more detailsOur scenario is as follows:We have a solution where a WCF service application hosting the WCF routing service is listening to the Windows Azure Service Bus Relay.  We have an acceptance test project in the solution which sends a message to the service bus which is then received by the WCF routing service and routed to SampleService.svc which is hosted in another IIS application on the same box.  A response is flowed back through to the test.  In the tests there are 5 scenarios simulating a successful message, and various error conditions.  On my developer machine it was working absolutely fine every time, and a clean build on my developer machine worked fine.  On the build server however one or more of the tests would fail each time with the above error message.  There didnt seem to be any pattern to which test would fail.The solution was building on a Windows 2008 R2 machine with IIS 7 and AppFabric Server installed with auto-start configured for the IIS Application which would be listening to service bus.After lots of searching online and looking at logs etc it turned out to be a simple solution to just restart the WAS service (Windows Process Activation Service) and the services it advised you to restart with it.  Hope this helps someone else

• SQL SERVER – Installing Data Quality Services (DQS) on SQL Server 2012

  Data Quality Services is very interesting enhancements in SQL Server 2012. My friend and SQL Server Expert Govind Kanshi have written an excellent article on this subject earlier on his blog. Yesterday I stumbled upon his blog one more time and decided to experiment myself with DQS. I have basic understanding of DQS and MDS so I knew I need to start with DQS Client. However, when I tried to find DQS Client I was not able to find it under SQL Server 2012 installation. I quickly realized that I needed to separately install the DQS client. You will find the DQS installer under SQL Server 2012 >> Data Quality Services directory. The pre-requisite of DQS is Master Data Services (MDS) and IIS. If you have not installed IIS, you can follow the simple steps and install IIS in your machine. Once the pre-requisites are installed, click on MDS installer once again and it will install DQS just fine. Be patient with the installer as it can take a bit longer time if your machine is low on configurations. Once the installation is over you will be able to expand SQL Server 2012 >> Data Quality Services directory and you will notice that it will have a new item called Data Quality Client.  Click on it and it will open the client. • Anonymous Access and Sharepoint Web Services

  A month or so ago I was working on a feature for a project that required a level of anonymity on the Sharepoint site in order to function. At the same time I was also working on another feature that required access to the Sharepoint search.asmx web service. I found out, the hard way, that the Sharepoint Web Services do not operate in an expected way while the IIS site is under anonymous access. Even though these web services expect requests with certain permissions (in theory) they never attempt to request those credentials when the web service is contacted. As a result the services return a 401 Unauthorized response. The fix for my situation was to restrict anonymous access to the area that needed it (in this case the control in question had support for being used in an ASP.NET app that I could throw in a virtual directory). After that I removed anonymous access from IIS for the site itself and the QueryService requests were working once more. • Events and objects being skipped in GameMaker

  Update: Turns out it's not an issue with this code (or at least not entirely). Somehow the objects I use for keylogging and player automation (basic ai that plays the game) are being 'skipped' or not loaded about half the time. These are invisible objects in a room that have basic effects such are simulating button presses, or logging them. I don't know how to better explain this problem without putting up all my code, so unless someone has heard of this issue I guess I'll be banging my head against the desk for a bit /Update I've been continuing work on modifying Spelunky, but I've run into a pretty major issue with GameMaker, which I hope is me just doing something wrong. I have the code below, which is supposed to write log files named sequentially. It's placed in a End Room event such that when a player finishes a level, it'll write all their keypress's to file. Also, if anyone can tell me of a better way to have sequentially numbered log files that would also be great. Log files have to continue counting over multiple start/stops of the game.

  During an early career of mine as a database consultant – when I was dealing with SQL Server 2000, I often needed to collect various data related to SQL Server. My favorite tool to collect the data is PSSDIAG tool. It is a general purpose diagnostic collection utility that Microsoft Product Support Services uses to collect various logs and data files. It collects Performance Monitor logs, SQL Profiler traces, SQL Server blocking script output, Windows Event Logs, and SQLDIAG output. The data collected can be used by SQL Nexus tool which help you troubleshoot SQL Server performance problems. PSSDIAG is a wrapper around other data collection APIs and utilities, the performance impact of running PSSDIAG is generally equal to the impact of the traces that PSSDIAG has been configured to capture. If you are using SQL Server 2000 – you need to seriously consider to upgrading it to SQL Server 2012. Here is a PSSDIAG Data Collection Utility updated in August 2012.
