  I have a simple XML structure like <main> <node1><!-- comments --><!-- comments --></node1> </main> and this can have any number of sub-nodes or values like: <main> <node1><!-- comments --><!-- comments --><p>texttext text</p> more text <br/></node1> </main> I want to check if the node is empty or not: I'm doing something like: <xsl:if test="string-length(main/node1//text())&gt;0"> But it does not work as if there are multiple tags, then string-length function will break coz of multiple arguments. Any help to solve this issue is really appreciated.

  Hello everyone :) I've heard in several places that it's bad to have code that is too wide onscreen. For example: for (std::vector<EnumServiceInformation>::const_iterator currentService = services.begin(); currentService != services.end(); currentService++) However, I've heard many arguments for 80 character wide limits. I'm assuming this 80 character limit comes from the traditional command prompt, which is typically 80 characters wide. However -- most of us are working on something much better than a typical command prompt, and I feel that using an 80 character limit encourages use of variable names that are far too short and do not describe what the variable is used for. What is a reasonable limit for a new project with no existing coding width standard?

• SVN Subversion use explicit cached credentials

  I am trying to run a SVN command in a script, but the script is launched as a system service that has cached svn username/password credentials. I could always just put the username/password arguments in the command: svn info --username bob --password pass but I'd rather not have my username/password just sitting in a text file. I've discovered that my cached credentails (when run svn normally) end up here: C:\Documents and Settings\bob\Application Data\Subversion\auth\svn.simple\6ef188c2163f1ccc860a690b7ad21a15 Is there any way I could copy this cached credential file to where my script exists and just call that file explicitly?

  I'm a developer (and therefore a tester) of a website. Our site accepts any JavaScript or HTML from an user but I haven't been successful in explaining the danger of it, as obvious as it is. So I would like to prove it by logging in as my boss to prove to him that there is definitely a real danger here. I think this will put down any of his arguments and let us move onto filtering content like this. (note this question is not about filtering, or other suggestions on JavaScript tricks) I already know how to steal the value of the document.cookie variable with AJAX and a PHP file, but once you have that string of name=value;name=value;..., how do you apply it to your own browser? • Drupal: why can't user admin access my module pages?

  I am working on a drupal 6.x module which consists of several page as defined in the .module page. The problem is that when I visit those pages as admin, I get access denied. I thought that admin (user 1) could access anything?   After looking I did come accross this post on the facebook forums: link They are feeding the facebook object a UIImage. That seems logical, but where is this documented? The API documentation is generalized to all platforms. Where are the iPhone specific requirements for arguments and their data types? I did, however, gather the information I needed by piecing together forum information, Facebook sample code, and some glue. • Hashing a python function to regenerate output when the function is modified

  I have a python function that has a deterministic result. It takes a long time to run and generates a large output: def time_consuming_function(): # lots_of_computing_time to come up with the_result return the_result I modify time_consuming_function from time to time, but I would like to avoid having it run again while it's unchanged. [time_consuming_function only depends on functions that are immutable for the purposes considered here; i.e. it might have functions from Python libraries but not from other pieces of my code that I'd change.] The solution that suggests itself to me is to cache the output and also cache some "hash" of the function. If the hash changes, the function will have been modified, and we have to re-generate the output. Is this possible or ridiculous? Updated: based on the answers, it looks like what I want to do is to "memoize" time_consuming_function, except instead of (or in addition to) arguments passed into an invariant function, I want to account for a function that itself will change.

• Maven release prepare without prompts?

  I want to automate the execution of Maven release:prepare with Perl so that the user doesn't have to answer the prompts for version names etc. Are there a -D arguments that can be supplied so that no prompting is done? I tried the obvious solution which is to feed the prompt answers to mvn via perl code like this: my $cmd = qq(mvn release:prepare -DautoVersionSubmodules=true-DpreparationGoals="clean install"); open MVN, "| $cmd"; print MVN "\n"; # default print MVN "$cur_version"; print MVN "\n"; print MVN "$next_version"; print MVN "\n"; close MVN; but mvn ignores such input and winds up using the defaults (and doesn't prompt either). • Why are most really fast servers written in C instead of C++?

  I'm trying to decide which to learn and I've read all the "Which is better" questions/arguments, so I thought I'd get your take on something more specific. Is there a platform dependency issue that C++ developers run into with such applications? Or, is it because there are more C developers out there than C++? I also noticed that many more third party C modules exist for Python even thought C++ modules are supported. From what I've read on different threads the consensus is that C++ is easier and faster to write, and runs just as fast. Am I missing something really big. Examples: NGINX APE (comet server) Apache

• Is there any way to retrieve a float from a varargs function's parameters?

  If the function was defined with a prototype which explicitly stated the types of the parameters, eg. void somefunc(int arg1, float arg2); but is implemented as void somefunc(int arg1, ...) { ... } is it possible to use va_arg to retrieve a float? It's normally prevented from doing this because varargs functions have implicit type promotions, like float to double, so trying to retrieve an unpromoted type is unsupported, even though the function is being called with the unpromoted type do to the more specific function prototype. The reason for this is to retrieve arguments of different types at runtime, as part of an obj-c interpreter, where one function will be reused for all different types of methods. This would be best as architecture independent (so that if nothing else the same code works on simulator and on device), although if there is no way to do this then device specific fixes will be accepted.

• Local variable not being passed to partial template by render?

  I don't seem to be able to pass a variable to my partial template in rails (2.3.5). My code is as follows; In the main view .html.erb file: <% f.fields_for :payments do |payment_form| %> <%= render 'payment', {:f => payment_form, :t => "test" } %> <% end %> and in the _payment.html.erb file: <%= t %> produces a wrong number of arguments (0 for 1) error. The payment_form object is being passed to the partial as f without any problems. I've tried a number of variations on the above syntax (e.g. :locals => {:f => payment_form, :t => "test" } without success. I presume I'm doing something pretty basic wrong but just can't see it.

• In a pre-commit hook - how to access/compare current and previous versions of files

  I'm trying to add to our existing pre-commit SVN hook so that it will check for and block an increase in file size for files in specific directory/s. I've written a python script to compare two file sizes, which takes two files as arguments and uses sys.exit(0) or (1) to return the result, this part seems to work fine. My problem is in calling the python script from the batch file, how to reference the newly committed and previous versions of each file? The existing code is new to me and a mess of %REPOS%, %TXN%s etc and I'm not sure how to go about using them. Is there a simple, standard way of doing this? It also already contains code to loop through the changed files using svnlook changed, so that part shouldn't be an issue. Thanks very much

• What can cause the language bar to disappear in a win32 application?

  When I run my Win32 application the Windows language bar (which is visible in all other applications) disappears after about 5 seconds. It reappears if I quit my application or alt-tab to a different application. If I alt-tab back into my application, it disappears again after five seconds. The switch key doesn't work either. It seems as if the system somehow has concluded that my application doesn't "support" the language bar. Is there something I need to do to for the language bar to be enabled? Or something I shouldn't be doing that can cause it to disappear? The application has a single custom window (where I draw DirectX graphics). I've looked through the arguments to CreateWindow and RegisterClass as well as the window messages that I handle (instead of passing to DefWindowProc) but nothing seems to be directly related to the language bar. I've only tested this on Windows 7.

  I'm working with ruby on rails 2.3.4 and I yesterday I found out I cannot send emails any more. The email-related credentials are ok because I could send emails until I upgraded my rails version about two weeks ago.
