• How come, diffrent text files become diffrent sizes after compression ?

  I have file of some random text size = 27 gb and after compression it becomes 40 mb or so. And a 3.5 GB sql file become 45 Mb after compression. But a 109 mb text file become 72 mb after compression so what can be wrong with it. Why so less compressed, it must 10 mb or so , or i am missing something . All files as i can see is English text only and and some grammar symbols (/ , . - = + etc) Can you tell why ? If not can you tell how can i super compress a text file ? I can code in PHP , np in that.

• Test for external undefined references in Linux

  Is there a built in linux utility that I can use to test a newly compiled shared library for external undefined references? Gcc seems to be intelligent enough to check for undefined symbols in my own binary, but if the symbol is a reference to another library gcc does not check at link time. Instead I only get the message when I try to link to my new library from another program. It seems a little silly to get undefined reference messages in a library when I am compiling a different project so I want to know if I can do a check on all references internal and external when I build the library not when I link to it. • How to ensure that you are building against STLport.

  I am using Visual C++ 2005 to build a couple of libraries and an executable. I include the STLport location in the Additional Include Path of the libraries and include the library in the input to linker for executable. The library however seems to reffer to stl symbols (such as string) without the stl port namespace.   Starting with an app already in development, I have carried out the instructions in the iPhone Development Guide – Unit Testing Applications I can successfully include and use my App's classes in Application-style tests that run on the device, and output their results to the console. If I add the following line of code: STAssertTrue([viewController isKindOfClass:[LoginViewController class]], @"Top view controller is not LoginViewController"); The following build error is generated: Undefined symbols: "_OBJC_CLASS_$_LoginViewController", referenced from: __objc_classrefs__DATA@0 in LoginViewTest.o ld: symbol(s) not found collect2: ld returned 1 exit status I can provide more configuration information for the project and the Testing target, but the setup works file without the [LoginViewController class] line in the test source. Without that line, I can reference the class, use it's properties and send it messages successfully. Is there a linking build setting, or bundle loading option that is required when attempting to use an App class in this fashion? Or should I find another type of test to confirm that the class of an object is the expected one?

• Shared library to minimise size of FLA file

  In a project we use large flash FLA file with lots of graphic assets, but the actual data that is changed is just in a few symbols. Sometimes it is not very efficient to transfer the whole FLA file that comes up to 20MB now. I was thinking about using Shared Libraries, but it seems that, even if you import external library, it still copies the whole assets into the destination file, but does not link it from external file. Consequently, size of the FLA file still remains the same. Is there any way to split FLA files into few separate in order to minimise size of the most frequently updated file and keep all unchanged data in another file?

  I am quite the beginner - but I have a lot of experience with respect to Electrical Engineering and formulas - over 30 years worth! Trying to construct an app for the iPhone. Loaded the SDK, bought myself a Mac, got a couple of "Chapter" pages written by John at Alpha Aviation - who recomended I try this site. How do I - well for example I enetered 400/1.732 - it came out like it was a web address with an underline! How can I get mathematical symbols like - sqare root, to the power of, subscript, superscript. I'd like to insert a few "calculator" pages but don't know how to. Appreciate I have only been doing this for the last week or so - so I am still quite rusty compared to what I wrote many years ago. Can anyone help? cheers

  I'd like to use unicode symbols within my website (especially Dingbats). Is there any way to enable this inside all (or at least some) browsers in Windows XP, without having the user to adjust any of his settings? I use the HTML5 doctype with the charset configured to UTF-8: <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <meta charset="utf-8" /> </head> <body></body> </html> The browsers recognize the charset correctly (even IE7). But no special characters are displayed. I only see an empty square box. This is the case for all of the following browsers: IE7, Safari 4, Firefox 3.5, Chrome 4.1, Opera 10.51. So, is there any way to configure to enable all (or most) unicode characters for browsers running on Windows XP?

  hi guys i'm trying to make a static library from a class but when trying to use it i always get errors with undefined references on anything. the way i proceeded was creating the object file like g++ -c myClass.cpp -o myClass.o and then packing it with ar rcs myClass.lib myClass.o there is something i'm obviously missing generaly with this.. i bet it's something with symbols.. thx for any advices, i know it's most probably something i could find out if reading some tutorial so sorry if bothering with stupid stuff again :) edit: myClass.h: class myClass{ public: myClass(); void function(); }; myClass.cpp: #include "myClass.h" myClass::myClass(){} void myClass::function(){} program using the class: #include "myClass.h" int main(){ myClass mc; mc.function(); return 0; } finally i compile it like this: g++ -o main.exe -L. -l myClass main.cpp

• New to javascript, why is jQuery such a beast?

  Hey Everyone, I'm new to javascript (functional programming is okay for me, though) and I am wondering how jQuery got away with some of the design decisions they made. Is it just too much work to fix now or what? For instance, there seems use of strange symbols in strings when accessing elements in the DOM or weird function definitions for $, that are forcing me to check references every other time I want to get some basic data. Can someone point me to a learning source where I can learn all of these nuances of jQuery (jQuery's examples just don't cut it, they're too spread out)? Maybe someone has a super good reference site/pdf for jQuery? Thanks

• How to configure a OCUnit test bundle for a framework?

  I've been developing a Mac OS X framework and I want to use OCUnit in my XCode 3.2.1 project. I've followed several tutorials on how to configure a OCUnit test bundle. The problem is that when I create a test case that uses a function that is defined in one of the framework's sources, I get a building error telling me that the symbol is not found. I made the test bundle dependent of my project's target as the tutorial said, but that doesn't seem to be problem. First I thought that I could solve this problem by dragging the framework's source files into the compile sources section within the Test bundle target, but then all the symbols referenced from that source file started to show up in the build errors, so that seems to not be a good solution/idea. How can I configure my unit test bundle so it builds properly?

  Hello. I'm trying to get rid of unnecessary symbols after decimal seperator of my double value. I'm doing it this way: DecimalFormat format = new DecimalFormat("#.#####"); value = Double.valueOf(format.format(41251.50000000012343)); But when I run this code, it throws: java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "41251,5" at sun.misc.FloatingDecimal.readJavaFormatString(FloatingDecimal.java:1224) at java.lang.Double.valueOf(Double.java:447) at ... As I see, Double.valueOf() works great with strings like "11.1", but it chokes on strings like "11,1". How do I work around this? Is there a more elegant way then something like Double.valueOf(format.format(41251.50000000012343).replaceAll(",", ".")); Is there a way to override the default decimal separator value of DecimalFormat class?

• Simple Serialization Faster Than JSON? (in Ruby)

  I have an application written in ruby (that runs in the JRuby VM). When profiling it, I realized that it spends a lot (actually almost all of) its time converting some hashes into JSON. These hashes have keys of symbols, values of other similar hashes, arrays, strings, and numbers. Is there a serialization method that is suitable for such an input, and would typically run faster than JSON? It would preferable if it is has a Java or JRuby-compatible gem, too. I am currently using the jruby-json gem, which is the fastest JSON implementation in JRuby (as I am told), so the move will most likely be to a different serialization method rather than just a different library. I'm now facing a problem with one of my servlet (I can't change it because some other views are using it) : The servlet is working with a syntax including those symbols "{" and "}". The exact syntax is {(value1_value2)(value3_value4)(value5_value6)}{(value7_value8)(value9_value10)(value11_value12)}{(value13_value14)(value15_value16)(value17_value18)} Values are integers, the problem is only when I use "{" and "}" my UrlConnection returns an error for bad URL.   My 5 year old wants to start programming, but he doesn't yet know how to type without looking for each letter 1 at a time. I know it's going to frustrate him to go so slow because of his typing speed. And it's not going to be fun looking for all the letters constantly... So what's the best way to get him to type fast? Clearly he'll need to type a lot of punctuation like semicolons, colons and symbols. So his little hands will have to get used to spreading over the keyboard... I did some google searches and found some very poor looking apps that focused on the letters.

• Characters with jquery json

  Hi everyone, I'm using jquery $.getJSON to retrieve list of cities. Everything works fine, but I'm from Estonia (probably most of you don't know much about this country =D) and we are using some characters like õ, ü. ä, ö. When I pass letters like this to callback function, I keep getting empty strings. I've tried to base64 encode(server-side)-decode(jquery base64 plugin) strings (i thought it was a good idea as long as I can compress pages with php, so I don't have to worry about bandwidth), but in this way I end up with some random chinese symbols. What would be the best workaround for this problem. Thank you.

• Can you use regular expressions in struts-config.xml?

  I'm trying to route these two url's to different Actions. We are using Struts 1.2: /abc-def/products /abc-def I tried putting this action first: <action path="/abc*/products" type="com.business.exampleAction"> <forward name="success" path="/go"/> </action> and then this one after: <action path="/abc*" type="com.business.differentExampleAction"> <forward name="success" path="/goElsewhere"/> </action> but it always goes to the second action (differentExampleAction in this case). I've tried various iterations for the , like . or (.*), but haven't found anything that actually works yet. From what I've read, it seems like the only regular-expression-like characters allowed in struts-config are the wildcard symbols (* and **), but I hope I am wrong.
