  This questions is about what things I can do to reduce the size that Windows 8 uses. Background For example: At present and with only one programm installed (MS Access 2007) I have a about 15GB of my harddisk space used. I have little space (its a 17 GB partition on a SSD disk). I would like solutions that are like: Remove files not really needed (drivers not actually needed in the system) Help files not really needed (documentation) pagefile.sys (assuming I would have 4GB ram and no real need for swaping) hiberfil.sys (used for hibernate and sleep... I need that. though I would regain about 4GB space) At best I would like to delete mostly files that I would most likely not need. Though I have no good idea where to start there. Since my setup (hardware will not change) I would be willing to delete all the drivers that windows 8 has for hardware I do not have.... The question is about ways to reduce the space that Windows 8 uses.

• For very beginning startup: home server or EC2?

  The micro instance of Amazon EC2 only has ram of 613MB, my laptop got 8GB. And I suppose likewise the processing power of my computer would be better than the micro instance. My question is, what are the considerations in deciding to host yourself or on Amazon EC2, especially for a really baby startup? For example, would network speed be a problem? My computer broadband network is 100Mbs up to 1Gbs. What would Amazon compare to this? My site at these moment would just host some images and perform some php requests. I would probably also use cloudflare but seems it increases the dns lookup time considerably... And of course the overall objective is to make the best user experience.

  For a school project, I've registered a free VPS on a hosting provider (pipni.cz). It has 256MB RAM: Mem: 262144k total, 148104k used, 114040k free, 0k buffers It's running on Debian Squeeze. I always get this error when I run a Java program: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. I tried to use Xms, Xmx, Xss with low values and still same result. ulimit -v gives me "unlimited". My application will be pretty simple and I need to use rmiregistry also. Can somebody help?

• Computer restarts infinitely after Bios/Motherboard screen

  Like every morning I turn on my computer (which is kinda new and only couple months old) and I never had any issue with it until now. It starts booting, shows that very first screen which has some motherboard picture and stuff and then it show which buttons to press to enter BIOS and etc. Then it suddenly restarted and after that just kept restarting every 3-5 seconds forever. What could that be? I unplugged power cable, checked all the cables, moved a case, it had some wires stuck under it, blew some dust (but didn't open the case yet) and I tried to boot again and it booted successfully and I am writing this issue now. My specs: i3-3220 3.30Ghz 8GB DDR3 RAM 1TB HDD GeForce GTX 650 Windows 8 x64 I also recently upgraded my security software (that's the most recent thing I did) and it includes ZoneAlarm firewall, Comodo Antivirus and Spybot Search & Destroy. But maybe it doesn't have anything to do with this. Cheers

• strange memory usage pattern on windows server 2008 on login through remote desktop..

  I'm running Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Service Pack 2 on a VM Ware instance with 10Gb ram allocated. I'm not running IIS or SQL Server. Under 'normal' conditions, the machine uses ~5.5Gb of memory. However, when I login to the server through remote desktop, the memory usage slowly climbs up to 9.8Gb of memory in use. After several minutes the memory slowly creeps back down to the 5.5Gb mark. I've tried killing all the processes associated with my login, on login, barring the taskmanager without success, and I can't see any process that is growing in memory usage when the memory is increasing. I'm assuming this is some system level cache that is growing / shrinking... but why is it doing this?

• Best virtualization solution for running Linux under Mac OS X?

  I'd like to run a virtualized Ubuntu instance under Mac OS X (10.6). I've used VirtualBox in the past, but am looking for something that will be faster, and don't mind paying for either Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion. Does anyone have experience running Linux guests under either or both programs? I'm primarily interested in doing software development on the Linux guest installation, but I'm also very concerned with the performance and responsiveness the guest OS. I have a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro (2.66 GHz i5, 8 GB of RAM, NVIDIDA GeForce GT 330M). Thanks!

  I have a problem of load balancing. We developed a web app for nearly 1500 users. As the number of users increased we are unable to serve the requests in a timely manner. • My Computer will not turn on?

  I recently built a gaming pc. It was working fine before the following events: I installed a graphics card driver update then: in windows it said that the user experience index needed to be refreshed, so i started the test and somewhere in the middle of the test my pc just switched off. No shutting down just stopped. Now it won't turn back on. I have checked its plugged in and the switch on psu is down, i tried a different power cable and i checked all the connections. When i press the power button nothing happens, no fans no lights no post beep. The problem is I cannot declare the unmanaged struct (is that even possible?) inside the managed code, so I've declared a managed struct but now I have a problem how to copy bytes from buffer into that struct.   Hello everyone i'm a little worry about my graphic card. before I get into that I will tell you my system specs. I have intel dx58so mainboard, 6gb corsair xms ddr3 ram, intel i7 960 cpu, and ati hd 5970. I'm also using a coolmaster haf92 case. My OS is vista X64. Here is my issue when I type in dxdiag in (Start Search) and I look into display. I see in (approx total memory) 716mb graphic memory. The ati hd 5970 is a 2gb graphic card. Am I being stuipd or is there an issue.

• Installing XAMPP on a live server [on hold]

  I am trying to get phpMyAdmin on my live server so I can do database programming on a live server rather than a local one. I have 2 servers at the moment, one through 1&1 which is a Windows Server 2008 and through RAM-Host which is running CentOS. I am just trying to figure out what I need to do to install XAMPP on the LIVE server, as opposed to accessing through localhost, for obvious reasons. Do I install XAMPP the same way I did on my local, but on my server? Essentially I would like to access the phpmyadmin via: mydomain.com/phpmyadmin, just as I would locally using localhost/phpmyadmin. Again, sorry for any ignorance here I just can not find any information on what to do for this.

• Windows 7 boot error 0xc0000225 after falling down

  My Toshiba netbook fell down and hasn't booted again. When I start Windows 7 it immediately says: Windows failed to start... Status: 0xc0000225 Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. After that, there are a few things to consider: There's a Linux distro Linkat which is also installed in the computer. It starts normally without any problem and it doesn't seem to display any errors when it boots. I restored all computer OSs with clonezilla and some images provided by the manufacturer, and it's done nothing. I have already checked the basic components of the PC (RAM, Hard Disk, WLAN Card) are pluged in and working. My impression is that's all about some broken part inside, though the Linux OS starts normally. Does anyone know a way I can fix this or at least any software for identifying the problem at all?

• Hardware needed for 2000 users? [closed]

  I have school assignment that is fairly well defined, requiring us to come up with a plan for an environment serving dynamic web applications to 2000 users, and should be able to scale up to six thousand. I have done plenty of research as far as load balancing, redundancy, UPSs, etc, but am having a hard time figuring out how much hardware is actually needed in the way of physical servers, ram, processing power, etc. The assignment states that the server will have a lot of dynamic code, email, and a database are required, all utilizing the appropriate microsoft service (MS SQL, Exchange, IIS). I already plan on splitting them out on to separate servers, but can't even fathom the hardware requirements of something that large scale. Could someone with experience weight in on this, or point me two some good articles?

Does the fact of splitting the load between servers have an effect on the total load my website could take? It's hard to single that out, because there are of course a lot of parameters that affect the results, so some assumptions: Putting failover considerations aside - I know it matters, but for the sake of the question's simplicity, lets assume nothing fails. The servers in the multiple servers option have an accumulated "power" equivalent to the one server option (about the same amount of cores and RAM space). If that is too theoretical, here is a concrete question that could help: Suppose I have several instances of exactly the same server - lets call it S. Suppose that server S can serve a load of up to X calls per time unit. Will two S servers with a load balancer serve 2X calls per time unit? significantly more? significantly less?

  Steps: Open IE on the desktop. Observe that home page opened. Click around (or not) and observe IE works. Either type ctrl-t or click on the new tab area next to current tab. • Is is better to combine Apache for file manipulation and upload and Nginx for static file serving, or to use one of the two alone

  Based on my research, I've read that nginx is best and ideal for serving up static files and images. My application depends heavily on uploading of images and rewriting them, then serving them up. Given that I only have one VPS currently, it has been suggested that I use nginx to serve up the images and website, and reverse proxy to Apache (on the same VPS) to rewrite files with image magick and handle the file uploads. Which would be the best solution, Apache, Nginx, or Apache + Nginx? In terms of best solution, I'm looking at minimal average RAM consumption, while maintaining decent load speed of maybe sub 2 seconds?

• Windows 7 100% Memory Usage (without any process listed as using that much memory)

  When I plug my external USB 2TB hard drive into my windows 7 box, my RAM usage climbs up to all 4 Gigs (but in task manager it shows that all process are small) and the hard drive is churning like crazy. My CPU is only about 20% utilized All I can think of is there is a Virus scanner or an indexer running like crazy. I've tried to kill all virus scanners (AVG and Windows Security Essentials) and it still keeps going. My computer is completely unusable as everything is constantly swapping. I've tried leaving it on for 2 days now and it still hasn't finished whatever it was doing. Any ideas?

I am looking for a UPS which can power the PC during a blackout (very rare) and when the battery level is like %20, it sends a signal to Windows 2008 to shutdown. • How to save your Linux state (suspend to disk) periodically to recover from crashes?

  One in a while my laptop crashes/dies because of a bad/empty battery, crappy wifi driver or whatever other reason. For a while I've wondered if it's possible to force Linux to periodically save the state (like vmware snapshots) to disk so you can restore from that with possibly slightly outdated work but at least with all of your apps open in the same state you've left them. I don't really see the point in having to boot everything from cratch constantly, although KDE saves your state on logout, that doesn't happen periodically (by default) either. It would make it much nicer to recover from your crashes if your ram was written to disk periodically. Anyone know if there's a system call to do this without also shutting down the machine? Even a manual button to save the entire state would be nice.
