  • Are there any generic KVM over IP cards/chips for motherboards without any such capability?

    I have a remote server that doesn't have any IP KVM capabilities, meaning I can't remotely power cycle it or access the BIOS. I saw that ASUS offers something for their motherboards here: http://www.asus.com/Server_Workstation/Accessories/ASMB5iKVM/ But is there anything like this available for other motherboards? Even something that I could stash away somewhere in a hard drive bay that simply plugs into the board would be great.

  • Synergy on macbook with osx mavericks wifi connection

    I'm trying to set up Synergy with my macbook pro running OS X 10.9.3 as a client and my Windows 7 desktop as a server. I'm having some pretty bad connection problems though when I try to use my mac. Every couple seconds the mouse or the keyboard will stop working entirely then come back. I ran some tests and found that the ping from my desktop to my mac would be very high every third ping or so(1000+ ms) or sometimes even time out. If I ping my desktop from my mac the pings are all reasonably low. I believe that this is a power saving feature of Mavericks and I have found a way to get around it by continually pinging my router on my mac, keeping my wifi card from going to sleep. I'm using this right now to type this up with synergy and have had zero issues. Has anyone else ran into this issue and found a better solution? So far, I think my best bet would be to buy an ethernet adapter but I'd rather not have yet another cable running across my desk.

    We are using Win 2008 R2 and connecting to it from Win7 boxes. The RDP is faster then before but we want to know if their are any other solutions that will make it faster. Due to licensing issue we got a software that multiple people need to access (not all at the same time) and the only way i can find is to install on a server and give RDP access to users.   • SQL Server Analysis Services, DNS, AD, Kerberos, Connection Issues

    Running into a very weird issue. Converting servers to Windows 2008/SQL 2008. Have a server, SERVER_A, brand new, setup with Win2k8,Sql2k8 - works. Have a Server SERVER_B, running Windows2003/SQL2005. I want to migrate from SERVER_B to SERVER_A. I have all db's, cubes, etc setup on SERVER_A and it is mimicking functionality. Since users are using Excel to connect to SSAS, they connection string has SERVER_B in it. What I want to do, is, change DNS on the network to point SERVER_B (by name) at the ip of SERVER_A. I have successfully done this with another server, SERVER_C, but I need to do it with SERVER_B. What I have found is that with SERVER_C, after changing DNS, had to remove SERVER_C from AD and then it worked. I could connect to SERVER_C (DB), SERVER_C (SSAS Default Instance) and SERVER_C (SSAS Named instance) and it all was actually connecting to SERVER_A I tried to do the same with with SERVER_B, and no luck. Changed DNS, removed from AD, and it wouldn't connect. Found out that there were some SPN's in AD set up, so removed those and tried again. I then could connect to SERVER_B (DB), SERVER_B (SSAS Named Instance), but not SERVER_B (SSAS Default Instance). I could connect to SERVER_B (SSAS Default Intance WITH the Port #), but I need to be able to connect without the port number. I am at a loss to as why I can't connect to the default instance without a port #. Not sure if it is SPN's in AD, or another AD issue, or something else. Pretty sure it isnt something on the server (because SERVER_C works!) Any insight or suggestions would be greatly helpful!!

  • Setting up 802.1X wireless connection on OSX

    I am an OSX user, I have Snow Leopard 10.6.5 and an updated AirPort (version 5.5.2). I am trying to connect to my university's wireless network, but it has a 802.1x security that I am having trouble defining... Here there are instructions for connecting with Windows XP, Windows 7 and Linux. Can someone please instruct me what should I do to set up this network on my Mac? I have had previous success in setting up this network, but I have no idea what I did that made it work. Since I updated my AirPort (to version 5.5.2) it worked only seldomly and very slowly... Before the update, even when it worked it never remembered my password. Update: I have already tried to create a new "location", removed all the 802.1x user profiles and all the remembered networks, and made sure the in the TCP/IP tab 'Configure IPv4' is set to "Using DHCP". I also moved /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist to my desktop in attempt to force the system to create a new set of settings. Still I can define the connection to work.

  • Instant connection to wireless network but delayed internet access on Mediacom with Windows 7

    I have Mediacom cable internet and their provided modem/wireless router a Cisco DPC3825. Each of the laptops experiencing the trouble have Windows 7 64-bit. When connecting to the wireless network each computer will take a second or two to connect and then toggle from "no internet access" to "internet access" however, no websites are accessible for about five minutes after connecting. After that, there aren't any problems. It happens on all 3 of the laptops I have available and none of them have problems on any other network. It seems like my phone doesn't have the delay issue when it connects. I've power cycled the modem/router along with a DNS flush. I have some of the DNS servers manually set to Google DNS addresses and one just default. I've contacted and had Mediacom support try all its tricks. They changed the SSID and password along with resetting the thing remotely a handful of times. It was installed just this month and seemed to pass the tech's checks upon installation. Nothing in the settings has been changed, but it's been exhibiting this problem from the get go.   • Caused by: java.net.SocketException: Software caused connection abort: socket write error

    I running JSP on Oracle 11g, Weblogic 10.3.4. I have 2 managed server and a oracle admin server installed. I am encountering an error where intermittently the log file of the 2 managed server and admin server will show java.net.SocketException: Software caused connection abort: socket write error. The application can run for 2 days without showing this error or it can show up a few times in a day. The server load are similar everday. When this error is been encountered, the server will just stop accepting connections and will not be able to access the application. Even if I try to access the application through localhost, I will not be able to access the JSP pages and a 503 http status is shown but then I am able to access the static HTML page. I will not be able to access the Oracle 11g Weblogic admin console page. When I take a look at admin server log, it shows that the managed servers are disconnected from the admin server and vice versa. Magically the application is able to recover by its own and the application is able to access again or I need to restart the server as restarting the service of the application does not work. The FTP connections that the application is connected to are closed as well. I am able to ping to telnet to the server port. The event log doesn't seem to be leaving any information. We did run wireshark to see the packet traffic and it seems that the application port is sending a RST, ACK packet to the load balancer. Any kind help will greatly be appreciated.     Help is greatly needed for our server. We are experiencing random "Connection reset by peer: mod_fcgid: error reading data from FastCGI server" errors which cause a 500 internal server error. If the page is then reloaded it loads normally as it should. We are running MPM Worker with mod FCGID to handle PHP. We had APC cache enabled but disabled it recently to see if it would fix the problem, but the random mod FCGID errors are still continuing. No other opcode cache is active now. Some of the fcgid timeout settings are higher because we run large reports which take up to 15 minutes. Any help is greatly appreciated! Just to clarify, the random fcgid errors are occurring when a user clicks a page on our site and the 500 error page loads instantly. This is random and occurrs less than 1% of the time but it is still an issue.

  • Getting Windows (VMware) to load from OSX's localhost without an Internet Connection

    I'm using MAMP to host my local sites, and VirtualHostX so that I can access sites during local development via a convenient URL like mysite.dev I'm also running Windows XP via VirtualBox, and it would be great to be able to load up any of my local sites within windows while offline as currently often working without access, on the move, unfortunately. I know that I can append my IP and a nice domain name to the host file in C:/WINDOWS/system32/drivers/etc ... and i can find my IP simply through terminal with "ifconfig" while I'm online. The problem is that when I'm not online, there's no IP. Even if there is an IP (when i have a connection), I still have grab it and update the windows hosts' file all the time, since I'm developing from a laptop and have a new IP at the drop of a dime. I found a tutorial where the author is able to get a permanent IP. He uses VMware Fusion as his VMachine, which is the only difference between his setup and mine. By running the terminal command "ifconfig vmnet1" he gets: a secret IP the virtual machine uses to talk to OSX And that doesn't change - which is awesome. I'm assuming it exists even if he's offline.   • How do I troubleshoot root cause of a hung windows (2003) server?

    I have a pair of Windows (2003 Server) servers both running MS SQL Server (2008 EE) that each hang every few months. This has been occurring intermittently :( for the past 15 months pretty much since we started using the servers. The symptoms are as-follows: I cannot remote desktop in to troubleshoot; when I attempt to, I get stuck on a blank black screen and am never offered a login prompt I can still ping the servers I can still open a SQL connection to the server, and, CURIOUSLY/BIZARRELY, when I do a "select getdate()", the time it returns appears to be stuck on the exact fraction of a second when (I presume) the server hung. Repeated attempts to do "select getdate()" keep getting that same date, suggesting that the clock is frozen. Filesharing attempts to connect to the hung server fail with the error message: "\ServerName is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The server's clock is not synchronized with the primary domain controller's clock." This is consistent with a frozen clock. Post-reboot, if I investigate the Windows Event Viewer logs, I can see many security accesses (coming from me and others) that I recognize were login attempts during the "down" period, but all of them in the security log are associated with that same timestamp of when the server hung. This also suggests the clock is frozen. There is not a clear cause in the Application or System event logs. I have a local Admin account on the server and am in the process of getting a domain-credentialed Admin account for better remote admin access. HP is supposed to be supporting these machines and has some low-level ILO2 access but they seem incapable of finding the root cause. A reboot will "fix" the problem but I would like to get to the root cause and solve the issue. Has anyone ever seen something like this odd clock behavior?! (If it were just one server I'd perhaps say a bad hardware clock, but two?) Can anyone advise me on what I should try to troubleshoot this sort of situation to find the root cause (or what I should tell HP to try?)

    I use a bash script which runs /usr/bin/ssh -f -N -T -L8888:127.0.0.1:3306 [email protected] However, when I run the bash script, it waits.. I see the connection coming up but the script doesn't exit.. it's like it's waiting for the SSH process to finish, because when I manually kill it the bash script finishes as well. Any ideas how to resolve this? UPDATE: I have croned this script.. and the cron process is the one that becomes a zombie.. the actual scripts runs just fine, sorry about that, with ps -auxf I get: root 597 0.0 0.7 2372 912 ? Ss Jul12 0:00 cron root 2595 0.0 0.8 2552 1064 ? S 02:09 0:00 \_ CRON 1001 2597 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? Zs 02:09 0:00 \_ [sh] <defunct> 1001 2603 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? Z 02:09 0:00 \_ [cron] <defunct> and when I kill the ssh the defuncts disappear.. why would they become defunct?

  • Way to connect to VPS w/Win Vista Home Basic, other than VNC or TeamViewer?

    I need to connect to a VPS and I'm running Vista Home Basic. TightVNC and TeamViewer both require access to the VPS first, because they require that the server be set up with TightVNC or TeamViewer. Is there anything similar to Remote Desktop that will allow me to use the IP address and administrator password to the VPS to simply connect, rather than having to have the hosting company set up VNC or TeamViewer on the server first? Any help would be appreciated!!! Thank you!

  • Windows 8 with LiveID login authenticates as Guest to remote SQl Server

    I have a network where several users are using Office Accounting 2009 in multi-user client/server mode. OA is built on SQL Server. One PC acts as the 'server' and has the SQl Server instance, the others have only the application installed and no SQL instance, all of the apps connect remotely to the SQL instance on the 'server'. I'm using the term 'server' loosely here, it is just a normal workstation that happens to be designated as the server and runs the SQL instance. There is no NT domain, all user accounts are local accounts. The way that OA works in multi-user mode is that each user is required to have a local account with the same username and password on both the client and 'server' PCs. This has been working well, no along comes Windows 8. I use my 'Microsoft Account' aka LiveID to log into Windows 8. Office Accounting runs fine and attempts to connect to the database, but fails, 'you do not have permission to perform this operation'. In the SQL logs, I get this error: 2012-10-28 17:54:01.32 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. 2012-10-28 17:54:01.32 Logon Login failed for user 'SERVER\Guest'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure SERVER is the hostname of the server. So it seems to be authenticating as 'Guest'?? To verify this, I enabled the Guest account on the 'server' PC and then added Guest as an allowed user within Office Accounting (this simply creates the user in SQL and gives it an appropriate database role). Sure enough, My Windows 8 PC was then able to connect to the database when using Office Accounting. Clearly, having users authenticate as 'Guest' stinks from a security and auditing standpoint. So what I need are some ideas for how to work around this. I've tried switching the Windows 8 PC to a 'local account' and that works too, but requires giving up significant functionality on the Windows 8 PC. What I really need is a way to force the Windows 8 PC to use a specific set of credentials when connecting to the remote SQL instance. Office Accounting takes the logged in username, which is my LiveID and doesn't correspond to any Windows user name. Anyone solved this issue?

    I always get a remote connection time out when using PuTTy and also when i send emails with attachments from a mail sever installed on Debian. I always get this error. I'm not sure if this is firewall or the new Debian 5 installation which i made. Is there any settings i need to fix after fresh install. Any inputs are highly appreciated.     I'm looking for a tool to monitor custom PHP Error logs/Apache and possibly Java logs on remote development servers. I'm not looking for a full production log system like Splunk, but something that's a little more flexible than an ssh terminal doing a "tail -f". Perhaps something that will: * Monitor multiple log files to my local machine for searching/analysis later * Allow "alerts" when certain strings appear in the log * Provide some kind of tabbed/dashboard view of the multiple logs being monitored (in total less than 10 logs).

    On a Debian 6 VPS, I'm running PHP 5.4 via mod_fcgid on a couple of different virtual hosts, managed by Virtualmin GPL. At random, I get 500 Internal Server Errors; restarting Apache brings everything back to normality.     I have the following situation : a Dell windows server 2008 R2 computer, with remote desktop services installed. I have installed a java application making use of a PostgreSql database, and made this application available for clients using RDP. Clients are standard Win XP pc's and Psion Neo handheld devices running Windows CE 5 Pro. The application works fine for clients on standard XP pc's connected directly via cat 5E Ethernet cable to a Dell Powerconnect 2816 switch. The Psion Neo clients connect wireless to the network via Motorola AP6532 access points. These access points are connected via a POE adapter to the same switch as the XP pc's. The Psion devices can connect without any problem and very quickly to the server and to the application using RDP. So far, so good. When the Psion devices move around in the warehouse, and they roam from one access point to the other, the RDP session on the client freezes for approx 1 minute, and then it automatically resumes the session. This freezing is very annoying for the users. Can anyone help in solving this issue? Update (August 9) : After re-installing the access points we have a working situation, but only when connecting to the RDP host : * via a Win Xp SP3 laptop * via a Symbol MC9190 Win CE 6 mobile device When roaming we notice a small hick-up less then 1 second, what is very acceptable. With the Psion NEO it's still not working, when roaming the screen freezes from 2 to 30 seconds. The RDP client on the win xp sp3 laptop and the symbol mc9190 is version 6.0. The RDP client on the neo is version 5.2. I have changed the security layer on the RDP host to RDP security layer (based on forums on the internet), because older RDP clients seem to have issues with the RDP 7.1 protocol on the Win server 2088 R2. Psion adviced us to do some network logging activity on the different devices. We made this logging via wireshark, and based on this the conclusion of Psion is that the server fails in handling tcp-requests. Can anyone give me a second opinion by analysing the wireshark loggings. Thanks in advance. Regards Patrick

  • Keep remoting into wrong account. Windows 7

    I have a home theatre PC running with two users accounts on windows 7. The default account logs into locally. The account 'Paul' is present but is denied local log in so the default auto logs in locally. I am trying to remote into account Paul using RDC however it tries to log into the default account and I am presented with an an option to boot the present user off so I can log in. How do I specify which account I want to log into?

  • Can't get virtual desktops to show up on RDWeb for Server 2012 R2

    I built a test lab using the Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview. The initial test lab has the following configuration (I have replaced our name with "OurCompanyName" because I would like it if Google searches for our name did not cause people to come to this site, please do the same in any responses) Physical hardware running Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview full GUI, acting as Hyper-V host (joined to the test domain as testVwHost.testVw.OurCompanyName.com) with the following VM's running on it VM running 2012 R2 Core acting as domain controller for the forest testVw.OurCompanyName.com (testDC.testVw.OurCompanyName.com) VM running 2012 R2 Core with nothing running on it joined to the test domain as testIIS.testVw.OurCompanyName.com A clean install of Windows 7, all that was done to it was all windows updates where loaded and sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /mode:vm was run on it A clean install of Windows 8, all that was done to it was all windows updates where loaded and sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /mode:vm was run on it I then ran "Add Roles and Features" from testVwHost and chose the "Remote Desktop Services Installation", "Standard Deployment", "Virtual machine-based desktop deployment". I choose testIIS for the roles "RD Connection Broker" and "RD Web Access" and testVwHost as "RD Virtualization Host" The Install of the roles went fine, I then went to Remote Desktop Services in server manager and wet to setup Deployment Properties. I set the certificate for all 3 roles to our certificate signed by a CA for *.OurCompanyName.com. I then created a new Virtual Desktop Collection for Windows 7 and Windows 8 and both where created without issue. On the Windows 7 pool I added RemoteApp to launch WordPad, For windows 8 I did not add any RemoteApp programs. Everything now appears to be fine from a setup perspective however if I go to https://testIIS.testVw.OurCompanyName.com/RDWeb and log in as the use Administrator (or any orher user) I don't see the virtual desktops I created nor the RemoteApp publishing of WordPad. I tried adding a licensing server, using testDC as the server but that made no difference. What step did I miss in setting this up that is causing this not to show up on RDWeb? If any additional information is needed pleas let me know. I have tried every possible thing I can think of and I am just groping around in the dark now.   • Disable logon protection for Rising Antivirus

    Hi, i am using Rising Antivirus, free version. It has many advanced functionalities, including a "logon protection" that assures the protection of the password, or pre-logon protection. Unfortunately, that disables remote desktop connection until an user has logged on. (user log on, disconnect, then you can connect) I hate this behaviour, someone knows how to disable this function? (ok, i could create a limited user that autologons and then autodisconnects, but i don't like this approach)
