• Unable to get to remote samba share

  I have a remote VPS that I would like to setup samba on and only allow my IP access to it. I currently have in my smb.conf: [global] netbios name = apollo security = user encrypt passwords = true socket options = TCP_NODELAY printing = bsd log level = 3 log file = /var/log/samba/log/%m debug timestamp = yes max log size = 100 [hosting] path = /hosting/ comment = Hosting Folder browseable = yes read only = yes guest account = yes valid users = nick I have the ports (137,138,139,445) open in iptables (they're open to everyone right now while I debug) and I see nothing in the syslog about iptables blocking my requests. When I try to open a file browser to my address \\ipaddress, it hangs for a good thirty seconds, and then opens a log in box. I enter my user name and password for the server, hit okay. It then opens the same box, I enter my credentials again and hit enter. Windows then tells me it could not connect. My user account is added to Samba already. Anybody have any suggestions what I can do to get this working?

• How to find what is causing Windows 7 Desktop pause

  Windows 7 64 bit. Been in use approx 2 years since last rebuild. Recently, system is misbehaving. Specifically, on bootup, I get the login screen. I login, I get my desktop wallpapers (2 monitors). I get one widget (Rainlender2). It now pauses for approx 12 minutes. After that time, it continues fine, without errors/popups. It acts like the delay never happens. How do I identify the cause of the delay?

  In my remote bare repository the HEAD is pointing to "refs/heads/master" and I want it to point to "refs/heads/other". I am not able to go to remote repository directory and run git symbolic-ref. Is there any git command to achieve it? Or any other way? If there is no way, does Github allow to change the HEAD? Thanks in advance.

And after some searching and reading I realised that hyper-v is not supported. Is there any possibilities that I can run my Windows phone 8 emulator on a remote Hyper-V 2012 server? • Render as html from a remote link on Rails

  On my registration form i want to show a modal (of twitter-bootstrap) when the user has a successfull signup to tell him to check his email so i put "remote: true" on my form and render a .js.erb wich shows the modal, on my controller. BUT, in case of inputs errors i need to render the page as html to refresh de form showing those errors. Can I call the controller from the remote form as JS but render as html? But I have no idea how to bring these changes remotely so that the branches are deleted from origin and everyone can see the changes. I tried git push but that does not work Any help.

• Windows Xp, Svchost.exe connecting to different ips with remote port 445

  Im using Windows Xp professional Sp2 Whenever i start my windows, svchost.exe starts connecting to all the possible ips on lan like from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.200 The local port ranges from 1000-1099 and the remote port being 445. After its done with the local ips, it starts connecting to other random ips. I tried blocking connections to the port 445 using the local security polices but it didn't work Is there any possible way i could prevent svchost from connecting to these ips without involving any firewall installed ? since my pc slows down due to the load I'd be thankful for any advices

• Extremely poor WiFi reception on new desktop

  I just received a new desktop with a built-in WiFi card (Windows 7 Home Premium x64). However, I am only able to receive any WiFi signal when the computer is within 1-2 meters of a router. Even then, the signal is very weak (Windows 7 says it is "poor"). I have tried this with 2 different routers and see similar results. I have somewhere around a dozen other devices that can connect to both routers with greater signal strength (usually full strength) from much, much further away. When I tried calling support I was instructed to reinstall my drivers and attempt to change the WiFi channel of the router. Neither worked. I was then told that the problem was with my routers and that the computer was functioning normally and that it was certainly not a hardware problem. What would be the cause of this and is there anything I can do to fix it?

  I am running Win7 in a Parallels Desktop 6 on Mac. On the mac, I use /etc/hosts : 127.0.0.1 mysite and it works fine : I can type mysite in the url and the website will display. What I want to do is be able to reproduce the same on Win7 with IE8 for example. Another guy did it successfully here but I can't : Parallels: How to see a Mac-hosted website from Windows? On Mac : ifconfig -a vnic0 10.211.55.2 on Win7 I tried this C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts 10.211.55.2 mysite What am I missing ?

• Mysterious "media" volume mounted on desktop Mac OS X

  I have a mysterious volume mounted on my desktop that I can't seem to forcibly unmount. I've tried using umount and also diskutil, but it seems to automatically remount itself. I've copied my hdd with Time Machine, and copied it onto a new computer, and it also has the drive mounted on it. It's not pointing to anything and I can't open it, nor can I forcibily remove it by hand with rm -Rf. Any ideas? I noticed this problem after I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion. It causes problems because when I try to select a file using the built in Finder dialog box, it freezes for a few minutes because it tries to cache or read into the "media" mounted volume.

  I installed Ubuntu in a VM using VirtualBox, and after a few hours of Googling all the things I had to install and configure for the rest of the environment, I am finally up and running with a Ruby on Rails IDE and have MySql up and running. After I start up the Ubuntu VM, I have to go to a terminal window and do this to start MySql: /etc/init.d/mysql start So that works fine, but, since I am such a GUI person, I’m wondering how I can create an icon on the Ubuntu Desktop that I can click on to launch this command.   So I was messing around with tasksel to install LAMP. Foolishly I unchecked the ubuntu-desktop item. About 25% through the process I realized it is removing my desktop components. So I closed the terminal window, but now maybe something went wrong. Many default applications are gone and I can't even boot into the desktop. I have a separate home folder so I don't really have to worry about data, but I did install a lot of other software which would be gone if I take reformat and reinstall. So is there a way to recover the desktop from a live CD?

• mod hosts file, connect to joomla on remote server

  I've just acquired an account on a remote server with Joomla installed. I was instructed to add xxx.xx.xxx.xx name.ca www.name.ca to the hosts file which I found in /private/etc/ . I had to su to my admin account and use sudo to mod file and found that hosts is also found in /etc/ though it is apparently the same file. I attempted to flush the the DNS cache using dscacheutil -flushcache and then launched Safari and entered address xxx.xx.xxx.xx/administrator but got a 404 error. Joomla was set up for me by the server owner and accessed from his Windows laptop to demonstrate so I know it should work but no go here. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be?

  My client is RDP 6.1 (On Windows XP SP3) and Server is Windows Server 2003. I have installed an SSL certificate on server for RDP. In the RDP settings (General tab), the Encryption method is set to SSL/TLS 1.0 and Encryption level is set to "Client Compatible". I have following questions In this case is it guaranteed that all communication is encrypted even when I remote login to the server? I mean pwd is encrypted Does RDP always use some kind of encryption even if there is no SSL certificate installed on the server? In this case I do not see security lock in the connection bar. When I set encryption level to "High" then I see security lock. I do believe that communication is both cases will be encrypted. Is it true? Please reply to my questions Thanks in advance Kumar

• WD Elements Desktop External - Not recognised on a single computer

  My WD Elements Desktop External is no longer recognised on my main computer. It has worked fine in the past, but now all of a sudden is not detected. It does not prompt when plugged in, nor does it show up in the disc management interface or the device manager. It appears to be aware that it is plugged in however as the light on the external blinks rapidly for a short while after being plugged in. The strangest thing however is that it works fine on other computers, including my family computers and my laptop. I have attempted to troubleshoot the issue by trying various USB devices in multiple ports on each system to see if there is any correlation with the issue, but have come up with nothing that gives me an idea of what is going on. I have also attempted to format the external using my laptop, but that has not helped either. If anyone has had a similar issue, or knows of any potential solutions, please post your advice.   In Mac OS X, when the text for a desktop icon is particularly long, it's displayed with an ellipsis: How do I configure whatever I'm supposed to configure (Finder?) to display that and all text in full? (No ellipses, please!) Edit: I do know that you can change the icon/text/grid size to allow for more text, but I don't necessarily want to change those settings. I want to change how Apple displays the text. That is, I want it to display either as one long string (which will run into other strings if two long file/folder names are next to each other, they will appear to overlap) or word-wrapped according to the size of the grid.

I am syncing my home computer to a computer at university and the university computers do not allow users to install applications anywhere, meaning that I cannot use the Dropbox utility to share my folders.   Hi I wanted to know if there's some option for disabling Netbeans to upload all files of a recently imported remote (php) project. I always check "Upload files on run", in the project configuration. But when I click on run Netbeans selects all files by default (I modified only some). The file checkboxes cannot be disabled at once and you have to do this one by one (imagine you have 5000 files...). That's annoying. Do you know any solution? thank you
