• No databases showing in phpMyAdmin

  My website is hosted in shared hosting service and is working fine with updated news stored in MySQL database. To manage the database of website, I install phpMyAdmin in a sub-folder with the same username and password used in website. When I login to phpMyAdmin, I don't see my database. phpMyAdmin is showing "No databases" in left pane. Is there any thing I need to configure in phpMyAdmin? • Java web UI framework like ASP.NET MVC?

  I'm doing some web apps for personal projects that might be shared out with my friends. I'm trying to use skills that will help me at work, but don't have $$ to spend on Visual Studio right now and don't want to try to cobble something together with Express Editions. Since I've been sort of wanting to bring my Java skills up to date and the main skills I want to work on are design and architecture skills, this isn't a big deal - except that I have no idea how to track down the right UI framework. I know I want something based on MVC, to get more practice with frameworks for that design pattern (we're using ASP .NET MVC2 at work). The UIs that I'll be making will be pretty simple - data entry, buttons, text, images. They will need AJAX. Any thoughts about which frameworks to look at? I'll be watching the comments, if anyone wants additional clarification on what I'm looking for.

• Problem in Kubuntu: Default browser never opens

  I'm using Kubuntu, and I switched the default browser to my favourite one. The thing is, when I did this, both my Twitter clients stopped working. Now each and every Twitter client I download and install fails to open any web browser to finish my account authorization. It's impossible they're all broken, so I reset my default browser to rekonq and it works well as a default browser, but still can't login to twitter from any client. In fact, every button in every program that should open a browser window (like Amarok with the "like on last.fm" button) does nothing. So I think there may be a problem with my system but I can't figure out what is it. My user is not in the admin group (it's a shared user), I have an admin user but I only use it to install programs. Could that be the cause? Also, hitting alt+F2 and writing man:file (enter) opens a rekonq window normally.

• Should every programmer keep a "Lessons Learned" journal?

  Every time I've finished a project, there is always something that I've learned (otherwise I don't find it very motivating). But I can't remember everything, and much later I may stumble across the same problem that I encountered in a previous project but no longer how I solved it (or at least what attempts I made). So would it be a good idea to write this down in a journal of some sort? I know that writing stuff down feels like writing documentation (which not everyone enjoys doing), and hope our memory to serve us when needed. But having it documented, it could be shared with other programmers and learn what lessons they learned. So, what do you think?

  A few minutes ago I signed up at a new webhost. I have yet to move my sites over. Upon initial SSH connection, I checked the load and memory usage, they do seem rather higher than I would like: # uptime 12:06:51 up 71 days, 23:23, 1 user, load average: 9.02, 9.49, 9.45 # free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 33014800 31927192 1087608 0 2384812 17729816 -/+ buffers/cache: 11812564 21202236 Swap: 16787916 8584 16779332 Is that a bit to packed? I'm only paying about $5 USD per month, so I don't expect <0.1 loads, but ~10 is worrisome. Is it not?   I was hoping someone could explain to me, or help me understand, the math behind rotations and origins. I'm working on a little top down space sim and I can rotate my ship just how I want it. Now, when I get my blasters going it'd be nice if they shared the same rotation. Here's a picture. and here's some code! blast.X = ship.X+5; blast.Y = ship.Y; blast.RotationAngle = ship.RotationAngle; blast.Origin = new Vector2(ship.Origin.X,ship.Origin.Y); I add five so the sprite adds up when facing right. • Paranoid Encryption

  Call me paranoid, but I really like to keep my stuff secret, but readily available on the cloud. So, asking this question. How safe and reliable is encryption software (e.g., truecrypt)? The reason I ask is that, what is I encrypt my data today with this software and after a couple of years, the software is gone ! What happens to my encrypted data? Is it equally safe to AES encrypt using 7-zip? Will it provide the same level or equivalent level of encryption as truecrypt or other encryption software? (I agree truecrypt will be better because of the container encryption it gives.) And what happens if 7-zip shuts down after 5 years? I am sorry if I am sounding paranoid, but I am coming back to my original question... Is there any application/software independent encryption? Meaning, can I encrypt with one software and decrypt with another so that I will not be dependent on just one vendor? I want my encryption to depend ONLY on the password and NOT on the encryption program/software? The next question, can I write my own program that does AES/stronger encryption when I give it a passphrase, so that I don't need to depend on third party software for encryption? If yes, which language supports the same? Can someone give me a heads up as to where to look for in case of writing my own encryption program?

• Sharing Authentication Across Subdomains using cookies

  I know that in general cookies themselves are not considered robust enough to store authentication information. What I am wondering is if there is an existing design pattern or framework for sharing authentication across subdomains without having to use something more complex like OpenID. Ideally, the process would be that the user visits abc.example.org, logs in, and continues on to xyz.example.org where they are automatically recognized (ideally, the reverse should also be possible -- a login via xyz means automatic login at abc). The snag is that abc.example.org and xyz.example.org are both on different servers and different web application frameworks, although they can both use a shared database. The web application platforms include PHP, ColdFusion, and Python (Django), although I'm also interested in this from a more general perspective (i.e. language agnostic).

  Hi, i'm trying to set up fstab to automatically connect to my office shared server. I'm undoubtedly doing something silly here as the username and password and server name work fine in the first code snippet below, just not the second - any help would be appreciated! • Access Control Service: Home Realm Discovery (HRD) Gotcha

  I really like ACS2. One feature that is very useful is home realm discovery. ACS provides a Nascar style list as well as discovery based on email addresses. You can take control of the home realm selection process yourself by downloading the JSON feed or by manually setting the home realm parameter. Plenty of options – the only option missing is turning it off… In other words, when you setup your ACS namespace and realm and register identity provider, there is no way to keep the list of identity providers secret. An interested “user” can always retrieve all registered identity provider (using the browser or download the JSON feed). This may not be an issue with web identity providers, but when you use ACS to federate with customers or business partners, you maybe don’t want to disclose that list to the public (or to other customers). This is an adoption blocker for certain situations. I hope this feature will be added soon. In addition I would also like to see a feature I call “home realm aliases”. Some random string that I can use as a whr parameter instead of using the real issuer URI.

I'm not super familiar with this kind of networking, so I'm not 100% sure how to word this question/give enough details right away so please ask for any clarifications. That being said: Host: Xubuntu 14.04 Guest: Windows 7 enterprise Via thunar I can access these network drives fine by going to Browse Network > Windows Network > Server I want to use The name given in the address bar is: smb://SERVER-NAME So my question now, is how do I go about accessing these folders via my win 7 machine in virtualbox? I've searched but all I get is people who can't figure out shared folders between host/guest (which I've got working)

• Help with Kodak esp 3250 printer driver on Lubuntu 12.1 SOLVED!

  First my system: pentium 4 -don't remember the speed-, 1g ram, dual boot to separate physical drives, Fdos and Lubuntu 12.1 second my lan: I have four computers operating for the same printer. 1. Intel quad core i5, 4g ram, running Windoze 7 64 bit, printer connected and shared from here. Kodak ESP 3250 2. Gateway 17" laptop running Windoze 7 32bit 3. Asus tablet (small laptop) running Lumbutu 12.1 4. My dual boot system running Fdos and Lubuntu 12.1 The problem: I downloaded c2esp_25c-1_i386.deb, tried to install it using DEBI Package Installer, it loads the files, looks for cups driver and ends with an error: "Dependancy is not satisfiable: libcupsdriver1 (=1.4.0)" What do I do now? Is there some place that I can get the correct cups driver? further information: The Asus tablet was running Ubuntu 12.1 (very slowly and with a few crashes) and could print from the lan printer with no problems. Is there something in Ubuntu that can be loaded into Lubuntu? noobee user hoping for answers, Paul

• Setup shortcut keys not working

  In my Ubuntu 12.04, in keyboard settings, I didn't find a shortcut key for restarting X, so in "Customer Shorcut", I set up Ctrl+Alt+Backspace for command sudo restart lightdm. But after that the shortcut doesn't work. Is it because it requires root privilege? Also I have a SysRq key on my keyboard, which I think to be the "Magic SysReq Key". My SysRq key is shared with PrtSc key (for screen shoot), and is in blue which means I have to press Fn key at the same time to invoke SysRq instead of PrtSC. But every time I press Fn+SysRq, it always shoots a photo of the screen, same as just hitting PrtSc i.e. without hitting Fn. I wonder how to use the Magic SysReq Key? Does it mean the shortcut has not been linked to any command that is supposed for Magic SysReq Key yet? PS: My laptop is Lenovo T400 and OS is Ubuntu 12.04. Thanks!

  I keep seeing people wanting to do this (or something very similar) and then being surprised at how much it might cost them if they went with Windows Azure. Time for a Q&A. Short answer: No, definitely not. Madness, sheer madness. (Hopefully that was clear enough) Longer answer: No because It would cost you a heck of a lot more than just about any other approach to running a blog. A site that can easily be run on a shared hosting solution (as many blogs do today) does not require the rich capabilities of Windows Azure. Capabilities such as simplified deployed and management, dedicated resources, elastic resources, “unlimited” storage etc. It is simply not the type of application the Windows Azure Platform has been designed for. • Is there a difference between "self-plagiarizing" in programming vs doing so as a writer?

  I read this Gawker article about how a writer reused some of his older material for new assignments for different magazines. Is there any similar ethical (societal?) dilemma when doing the same thing in the realm of Programming? Does reusing a shared library you've accumulated over the years amount to self-plagarizm? What I'm getting at is that it seems that the creative world of software development isn't as stringent regarding self-plagarism as say journalism or blogging. In fact on one of my interviews at GS I was asked what kind of libraries I've developed over the years, implying that me getting the job would entail co-licensing helpful portions of code to that company. Are there any cases where although it's legal to self-plagarize, it would be frowned upon in the software world?
