• How to properly learn ASP.NET MVC

  Hello everyone, I have a question to ask and maybe some of you will think it's lame, but I hope someone will get me on the right track. So I've been programming for quite some time now. I started programming when I was about 13 or so on Delphi, but when I was about 17 or so I switched to C# and now I really like to program with it, mostly because it's syntax is very appealing to me, plus managed code is very good. So it all was good and fun but then I had some job openings that I of course took, but the problem with them is that they all are about web programming. And I had to learn PHP and MVC fundamentals. And I somewhat did while building applications using CI and Kohana framework. But I want to build websites using ASP.NET because I like C# much, much more than PHP. TL;DR I want to know ASP.NET MVC but I don't know where to start. What I want to start with is build some simple like CMS. But I don't know where to start. Do I use same logic as PHP? What do I use for DB connections? And also, if I plan to host something that is build with ASP.NET MVC3 on a hosting provider do I need to buy some kind of license?

• What every beginner should know about website development? [closed]

  I am a novice at building websites and considering to make one. But there is a lot of confusion that's going on right now. I guess every beginner faces them. Few questions that come up are: I have an idea and a need a website. That's all i know right now. But how do i start ? HTML is for sure the basic language but there are a hell of other technologies too. What is actually asp, php, ruby etc? How do i choose the right one from them? Other than asp, php there is javascript and other languages under the same belt. What are they used for? Hosting. When i am choosing the host, what considerations i have to keep in mind ? What support do i need from them (other than getting some important space obviously!). I am considering of making the website in ruby on rails. I don't know about php and what effect it would have if i choose ruby over php. I thought about ruby just because its new and i dont want to learn some thing "not new"! :P Moreover what is a framework and how does a framework effect my development process? These three questions are just to explain my "confusion" better. There is obviously a lot more to it. Just to try to answer how the flow of website development goes keeping in mind my questions!

  I'm strugling to install rgdal library on Ubuntu 12.10. Installation from within R results in error: Error: gdal-config not found The gdal-config script distributed with GDAL could not be found. If you have not installed the GDAL libraries, you can download the source from http://www.gdal.org/ If you have installed the GDAL libraries, then make sure that gdal-config is in your path. Try typing gdal-config at a shell prompt and see if it runs. If not, use: --configure-args='--with-gdal-config=/usr/local/bin/gdal-config' with appropriate values for your installation. • Two different domains as one user session in Google Analytics

  I have two websites that are run as the same service. Each domain offers articles from a different market. At the top of each page the two domains are shown as menu options. If a user clicks one they can switch to the other domain. See here: http://www.cgtag.com Each domain has a different Google Analytics account, and when a user switches domains Google is counting this as a new session. It's listing the other domain as the "referral" for that new session. When the user switches back to the first domain Google is counting this as a returning visitor. This is messing up my reports. Showing returning visitors values that are higher than reality. It's also increasing hits on landing pages when the user switches, and listing the other domain as a referral site. I've found tips on how to list two domains as one website, but that results in merging the data. I want to keep the two domains separate so that I can track each ones performance, but I don't want to count domain changes as new sessions. Maybe something like treating the two domains as subdomains.

• OOP oriented PHP app source code samples and advice

  The day I have been dreading has arrived. I never felt OOP or good software design was important(I knew they were important, but I thought I could manage without them.). However having read otherwise almost everywhere on the interwebs, I started dreading the day when my client would ask me for new features in an existing app. The day has come and the pain is unbearable! I have never coded my PHP websites "properly"(PHP is my primary language and the bulk of my work. I am learning Python (using web2py)) I take care that the website doesn't fall apart in a daily use scenario. I code pages like I was creating a list of static html files with bits of "magic code" in each of them(this bugs me a lot). How do I make the whole app more or less a single object? For eg. How do I design the object model for an invoicing app? I use a lot of functions for doing any particular thing in the same fashion throughout the app(for eg. validation, generating ids, calculating taxes etc.). I know the basics of OOP in general. Can anyone point me to source code samples of functional apps written in php? Or can someone provide pointers so I can recode my existing apps in a more modular way.

• Is micro-optimisation important when coding?

  I recently asked a question on stackoverflow.com to find out why isset() was faster than strlen() in php. This raised questions around the importance of readable code and whether performance improvements of micro-seconds in code were worth even considering. My father is a retired programmer, I showed him the responses and he was absolutely certain that if a coder does not consider performance in their code even at the micro level, they are not good programmers. I'm not so sure - perhaps the increase in computing power means we no longer have to consider these kind of micro-performance improvements? Perhaps this kind of considering is up to the people who write the actual language code? (of php in the above case). The environmental factors could be important - the internet consumes 10% of the worlds energy, I wonder how wasteful a few micro-seconds of code is when replicated trillions of times on millions of websites? I'd like to know answers preferably based on facts about programming. Is micro-optimisation important when coding? EDIT : My personal summary of 25 answers, thanks to all. Sometimes we need to really worry about micro-optimisations, but only in very rare circumstances. Reliability and readability are far more important in the majority of cases. However, considering micro-optimisation from time to time doesn't hurt. A basic understanding can help us not to make obvious bad choices when coding such as if (expensiveFunction() && counter < X) Should be if (counter < X && expensiveFunction()) (example from @zidarsk8) This could be an inexpensive function and therefore changing the code would be micro-optimisation. But, with a basic understanding, you would not have to because you would write it correctly in the first place.

• Title of the page in search results and title of google's cached version are different. Why?

  Check this: http://www.google.com/search?q=site:gunlawsbystate.com+kansas+gun+laws The title of the first result is "Kansas Gun Laws - Gun Laws By State". Although, on the page google has cached the title is different: <title>Kansas Gun Laws - Kansas Gun Law - Reciprocity Guide</title> Google shows the title that has been on the site 2-3 months ago. Google bot has visited the website a lot of times since that, and as you see it even cached it (the latest version is of 15th Sept), however for some reason it doesn't change the title to the new one in the search results. We use hash-bang URL structure on this website. It completely meets google's requirements for AJAX websites (_escaped_fragment_ stuff). The issue I explained is happening with almost all hash-bang pages that got indexed. Questions: Why does it keep old page title in the search results? Can it be connected to the fact that I'm using hash-bang URLs? There are lots of pages on the site that have the same issue, all of them have hash-bang URLs. Another thing I noticed is that Google's "Preview" feature doesn't work for any hash-bang URLs on the site. Did I do anything wrong? It has got cached versions of the pages, why wouldn't it generate a preview? Thanks (and sorry for my English) PS. Here's a weird thing I also noticed: this search query https://www.google.com/search?q=Kansas+Gun+Laws+-+Reciprocity+Guide shows the correct title for the same page as in the example above. Why does google show different titles for the same page when you run different queries?

  TL;DR: sudo apt-get install ... saying "Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages." The problem I was trying to get the WebApps feature for PP and QQ following this blog post. I ran the sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webapps/preview command to add the repository, but i got a connection error. Since I know my current ISP gives a shaky connection, I tried again and sure enough, it worked. Then I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview, but I realized we had to update apt-get first, so I hit Ctrl + C to stop it. Then I ran sudo apt-get update which worked w/o a fuss, but when I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview again later, it showed an error message. Here's the dump: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: unity-webapps-preview : Depends: xul-ext-unity but it is not going to be installed Depends: xul-ext-websites-integration but it is not going to be installed Depends: xul-ext-webaccounts but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I think this might be because of me interrupting the earlier command. It hadn't got a chance to output anything, though — I stopped it pretty fast. What I tried I have tried running a number of commands:- sudo apt-get install --fix-broken sudo apt-get autoclean sudo apt-get autoremove sudo apt-get -f install sudoapt-get install ppa-purgeandsudo ppa-purge ppa:webapps/preview` Even after running sudo apt-get upgrade after every try, none of them worked. Research I tried searching Google, looking at a couple of forums and searching on AU, but to no avail. Help would be appreciated.

• Server outputs the sourcecode of PHP page

  I have a Shared Hosting package with HostGator. In it, I'm hosting around 4 websites. They are just some simple sites that doesn't likely to attract more visitors. But a few days ago, when I accessed one of my sites(via a browser), it outputted the PHP code of index.php, instead of outputting it as HTML. I think, at that time, the server was a bit busy or something. I heard that, Facebook also have got a similar condition where the home page's code was made available. So, how do I take preventive measures for this ? I always use phpBB forum's style of coding. That is, each sub pages, common functions, etc. are separated into subfolders. And in PHP, I would just include_once() or require_once() it. Also, these subfolders have a .htaccess file in which I have set the deny permission to the files inside it from outside. Also, in the main page(index), I would define a constant. And the first line of the subpages(which is situated in separate folders) is to check whether this constant is set. If not, calls die(). I am looking forward for solutions to this problem of outputting raw code when the page is accessed. Thanks in advance :)

• Best way to let users choose country/language when submiting an URL to a directory

  I want to offer the user the possibility to add the country/language for websites they would submit to a fairly simple website directory. I have a folder with flags from http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ . The flag images are named according to the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, meaning that I could make a PHP script that would be able to retrieve images and the name of the country retrieved from the image name (not the full name, but it wouldn't be necessary). Just to make things clearer, I couldn't find a proper combo-box jQuery plugin for my needs (that would act exactly like the native but with an icon before the text) and don't really have the time to develop one on my own. Considering the number of images, I also wouldn't just display them all with a radio box near them. Also, having a classic drop-down list would be a nightmare for me as I would have to assign the short country name manually to each entry, or do it once for every country. Offering the user a dropdown list with the short country names but no flag near them would also be unfriendly and confusing. The idea is that every website featured in the directory would have the country flag icon near it. I have the images named properly but I don't know how to let the user choose the right image for their website. Any idees? Thank you all in advance! • Is this a link scheme? If so, what to do? what problems can i face?

  I was asked to remodel a website, and decided to check its rank on alexa. Surprisingly, there are many, many different websites linking to it, none relevant. One particular thing about it is that none of these urls work, and they all display the exact same error when accessed, which to me is a very good indication that this is some sort of linking scheme. (besides the somewhat obvious names, it even says scheme in one of the urls !?) If so, how should i proceed about this website? • Need help with cybersquatting complaint: can a domain name forward AND resolve at same time? [on hold]

  Probably a silly question for you pros... but for this novice here, I just want to make sure my understanding is correct. Context: I am trying to prove that a domain name owner has been cybersquatting and has never used the domain name in question. There are 4 shots from WayBackMachine over a three-year period that show the domain name resolving to a basic server index page with either no files or a single cgi-bin folder. The domain name owner claims, however, that the domain name was forwarded over the entire time from to another website, and that these captures probably coincided with occasional "outages." It is my understanding that: a) domain name forwarding is binary: if a domain name is forwarded to a valid site, it cannot simultaneously resolve to a valid IP address. Is this correct? b) domain name forwarding is not subject to "outages": servers can have outages, and websites can be down, but the forwarding itself cannot be down, as this is simply a pointer. (Or, the entire registrar where the DNS settings are hosted would have to malfunction. Is this correct? FINALLY, bonus question for pro webmasters: What is the likelihood that the WayBackMachine would capture the domain name on just those occasions when the webmaster disabled forwarding to supposedly work on the new site? • Web hosting providers for businesses (with offsite backups, disaster recovery options, etc.) [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a couple of web hosting providers that are geared towards businesses. By this I mean providers that make it easy to create daily off site backups, are aware that websites require disaster recovery options and have these in place or are able to assist with them, etc. We currently have about a dozen sites with various providers, however, I've been asked to consolidate all of these into one provider and create a full disaster recovery plan. Unfortunately it seems like most providers are geared towards average users that don't require all these extra bells and whistles that businesses need. For example, HostGator, which is a very popular and well reviewed provider, doesn't even allow you to schedule full backups, they have to be manually requested via cPanel and then downloaded once available. If anyone can point out a couple companies that might be able to help with these sorts of things that would be much appreciated. Thanks, Harry P.S. I should also add that we are hoping to stay away from having to manage our own server, we're hoping for a fully managed solution like what HostGator would offer for example.

• Azure Search Preview

  One of the things I’ve been keeping an eye on for quite a while now is the development of the Azure Search system. While it’s not a full replacement for the full-text indexing service in SQL Server on-premises as yet, it’s a really, really good start. Liam Cavanagh, Pablo Castro and the team have done a great job bringing this to the preview stage and I suspect it could be quite popular. I was very impressed by how they incorporated quite a bit of feedback I gave them early on, and I’m sure that others involved would have felt the same. There are two tiers at present. One is a free tier and has shared resources; the other is currently $125/month and has reserved resources. I would like to see another tier between these two, much the same way that Azure websites work. If you have any feedback on this, now would be a good time to make it known. In the meantime, given there is a free tier, there’s no excuse to not get out and try it. • Kids and programming: ScratchKara

  Ever now and then I kept wondering how to share with my kids the excitement of creating something with your computer. Of course, today this is a bit more difficult, as they have seen 3D animation games and well-edited websites. I guess that's why they weren't all that hyped when I found my first computer model at our local recycling facilities (an 8-bit Laser VZ-200 with rubber keys). When I finally got it up and running with an old analog TV set they finally asked whether we could play soccer on it. Needless to say that my showing them how it remembers some BASIC commands and lists and executes them did not make any impression. So the question is for real: How do you get today's kids excited about programming? And just recently I looked again for environments that allow even young kids (mine are 7 and 9 years old now) to do something and have fun. Obviously any real, text-oriented programming language wouldn't work well. To cut it short: Something really nice was built by University of Oldenburg: ScratchKara. It is the perfect mixture of Kara, a simulation of a little ladybug and Scratch, an authoring environment from MIT. ScratchKara allows kids to initially simply explore how the bug moves and turns by pressing the action buttons, then move towards sequencing commands through drag & drop, and eventually end up building algorithms with procedures and functions. Even through it is built for kids and beginners, the environment comes with debugging and refactoring, which I found more than amazing. My kids love it and I have to admit I keep thinking about how to solve a bit more advanced problems with this language, which does not allow you to store any state information (other than your call stack). Yes, I am hooked, too... Once the language is understood you can then move to one of the original Kara versions, where you can define the bug's behavior through finite statemachines, Turing tables, Java and other textual languages. And from there, anything is possible.

• Microsoft Tag Tagged Me

  I got EXTREMELY lucky last week and won an HP Mini 311 notebook from a Microsoft Tag Twitter contest. I did my required tweet to enter last Tuesday, and one hour later received notification that I had won the weekly drawing. Apparently you can tweet up to 500 times (I pity the followers of those who do that), so it was really lucky that I won, and I sympathize with those who had been really trying. I was vaguely aware of those pastel-y triangle-y square things that look like someone put one of Don Johnson’s Miami Vice outfits through a shredder, and knew that the company I work for (one of the world’s largest consumer products companies) was looking into putting them on our products, packaging and advertising, but didn’t know much more about the technology. I thought they were just an improvement over bar codes, and would be used in retail store scanners, but I was mistaken. These tags are meant to be scanned by consumers using their mobile phones, to get instant access to information, websites, reviews, etc. Scanning a tag can open a web page, import a contact card, or dial a phone number, play a video… Tag reader software can be installed on Windows Mobile, iPhone, Symbian, Blackberry, Android, J2ME, and other phones (and I suspect that it will be available for Windows Phone 7 also :). There are built-in tracking, metrics and analysis tools, to help companies using Tag make decisions about their marketing expenditures. (And they don’t have to look Miami Vice-y – They can be customized to reflect the personality of the person or a brand.) Looks like interesting stuff. • A new clients come into my web agency. How to configure email and social accounts to work better? [on hold]

  I created websites for many years but still have not found the right way to organize all the email and social accounts of every clients. I mean, every web agency follows dozens of customers. Each client needs at least Google Analytics, AdWords, a Facebook page, a Twitter profile, a Youtube channel, probably a listing on Google Places and maybe a Mail Chimp (or similar) account. The web agency, in my opinion, must own these accounts, use them to deliver results to the customer and -of course- make them available to the customer for two reasons: - The customer must be able to see how things are going - The client must have the ability to change web agency without suffering The web agency, however, has many problems in having all of these accounts. For example, I like the idea of having a Gmail account for each client and from that account use all the products of Google. But is not possible to create more than many Gmail account from the same ip address and with the same phone number. The web agency could invite the customer to create his own accounts but: - This is not necessary a value for the customer (indeed...) - The web agency would manage them, however, from the same ip address, incurring in problems - If phone verification occurs, the web agency has to disturb the customer for verification Have you the same problem? • Does Google sometime prevent new white hat sites from ranking at all in some verticals?

  Assuming someone wants to implement a new viagra or akai berry e-commerce website. There is a lot of competition and this site does not really bring something new, other than a new online counter to buy products at a nice price. Assuming this site does not use any black hat techniques and that it stays with Google quality guidelines, and assuming it has no (or few) backlinks (from non-authoritative websites). Assuming this website's pages are indexed properly in Webmaster Tool, and that no penalties are reported. No site improvements are suggested. Google crawls the site daily as reported in GWT. No robots.txt configuration issues. Does Google sometime decide to no rank this site for any user query (for weeks), because of lack of original content? The reason I am asking this is that I am trying to understand the possible cause of a similar situation I am observing with two sites. If so, what is the way out to start ranking for these site? If not, does it mean the cause is elsewhere for sure? Any confirmed info to get out of the maze is welcome.

Clarke has said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. As a kid in the midst of an increasing technological revolution, electronics were at the heart of that. Learning electronics was made easy through the Science Fair Electronic Project Kits found at Radioshack. Through the project guides, kids could construct various ‘experiments’ by attaching wires to terminal springs that make circuits. The terminal springs would wire in components such as LED segment lights, photo sensors, resistors, diodes, etc. While it was fun getting the projects to work, the manuals lacked in depth explanation as to what was happening in the circuit to produce the project’s result. Why it was awesome: First, it was a simple buy for parents. Everything you needed to get your child interested in electronics was right in the kit. You didn’t need to breadboard or solder. I remember a distinct feeling of accomplishment making a high-water alarm or a light-sensor game with the realization that the bundles of wires springing up from the kit were actually doing something! Modern equivalent: You can still pick up variations of the 100-in-1 kits, but their popular replacement seem to be Snap Circuits by Elenco. All of the components are mounted on a plastic base with a contact on either end which interconnect with each other and the plastic base that projects can be mounted to. Each component also has the electrical diagram symbol for that component drawn on it so it can help you read schematics. For that reason alone, I like these better. • Learning Electronics & the Arduino Microcontroller

  Lately, I've had a growing interest in Electronics & Microcontrollers. I'm a loyal reader of Make Magazine and thoroughly enjoy seeing all the various projects in each issue, even though I rarely try to make any of them. I've been reading and watching videos about the Arduino, which is an open source Microcontroller and software project that the people at Make (and a lot of other folks) are pretty hot about. Even the prebuilt hardware is remarkably inexpensive , although there are kits available to build one from the base components. (Full disclosure: I bought my first soldering iron... EVER... just last week, so I fully acknowledge the likelihood of making some mistakes. That's why I'm not trying to do the "build it yourself" kit just yet. It's also another reason to be happy the hardware is so cheap.) There are a number of different Arduino boards available, but the two that have really piqued my interest are the Arduino UNO and the NETduino. The UNO is a very popular board, with a number of features and is under $35 which means I won't hurl myself off a bridge when I inevitably destroy it. The NETduino is very similar to the Arduino UNO and has the added advantage of being programmable with... you guessed it... C#. I'm actually ordering both boards and some miscellaneous other doodads to go with them.  There are a few good websites for this sort of thing, including www.makershed.com and www.adafruit.com. The price difference is negligible, so in my case, I'm ordering from Maker Shed (the Make Magazine people) because I want to support them. :) I've also picked up a few O'Reilly books on the subject which I am looking forward to reading & reviewing: Make: Electronics, Arduino: A Quick Start Guide and Getting Started With Arduino (all three of which arrived on my doorstep today.) This ties in with my "learn more about robotics" goals as well, since I'll need a good understanding of Electronics if I want to move past Lego Mindstorms eventually.

• How does a game developer get feedback from gamers (not developers) or start a forum community without paying for advertising or hiring Q&A teams?

  I am familiar with a lot of game developer forums, but I'd assume this is much less likely to attract more casual commentators. I also fear that feedback from a gamer's perspective would often be tainted by their game dev perspective. For example, if I were making a RTS game and wanted to get feedback from "The RTS gamers" where would I go? Is there a general idea of what type of website or forum to go to? Do you go to specific game websites, to try to "steal" attention? Would this not equate to spam or inappropriate posting? What is considered appropriate and inappropriate? I am not asking for specifics. I am asking how one "starts a community", or how one "gets feedback from gamers" without resorting to spamming forums or 'advertising' just to see what sticks. What TYPE OF PLACE does one go? Are there already sites designed for this purpose? I tried going to what was once a very popular forum for feedback from what I believed was a niche hardcore group of gamers in the genre, but its popularity seemed to have died significantly; Leaving only trolls and very young teenagers. The resulting feedback was quite disappointing, mainly for how little feedback it resulted. Many years ago, feedback would flood in by the hundreds so quickly. Without this website, I am at a loss as to where to go to see what people think of ideas, gather feedback from a gamer's perspective (not a developer's perspective), or where to pull from to start my own site's forum. I am out of ideas of what to do, short of going to various game forums to post in the off-topic sections there.

• Set default owner/user

  I'm a web developer, and so have set-up an old machine in the office as an Ubuntu Server, for the purposes of testing websites. I've set-up LAMP and have created a /var/www folder, from which all my local sites are served. The issue is that of user permissions, i.e. any files that I copy into that folder (from my Windows machine via the network) automatically take on me (daniel) as their owner. The problem is that I want www-data to become the owner. I did some research and saw that it should be possible to use setuid (and setgid) to automatically set www-data as the owner of all files put into /var/www automatically, so far I've not had any luck making it work. Can someone help please? Thank you UPDATE: Would this do what I want it to do? Default file permissions for php user www-data UPDATE 2: I've kinda fixed my issue by changing my samba settings. Using Webmin, I was able to go in and change the default settings (as seen here: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/521/captureon.png/)
