  • Installed Ruby 1.9.2 but new gems won't create scripts into /usr/bin

    I had previously ruby 1.8 on my Ubuntu 10.10, which I removed through Synaptics. Then I have installed ruby 1.9.1 also via Synaptics (which is then saying that itself is version 1.9.2). Then I installed ruby-debug19 and rspec gems with sudo gem install ruby-debug19 rspec However I can't start rdebug or rspec, but I can invoke the debugger from inside my ruby script, so the debugger is working. I inspected the starting scipts rdebug and rspec and then I realized that they are still old scripts back from ruby1.8 time. In other worlds, the current 1.9 install of these gems haven't created the starting scripts anywhere. What is the easiest solution for a lazy soul like me? It looks like removing-reinstalling ruby 1.9.2 won't help, and installing these gems over and over againg won't create the starting scripts.

  • Why is trailing whitespace a big deal?

    Trailing whitespace is enough of a problem for programmers that editors like Emacs have special functions that highlight it or get rid of it automatically, and many coding standards require you to eliminate all instances of it. I'm not entirely sure why though. I can think of one practical reason of avoiding unnecessary whitespace, and it is that if people are not careful about avoiding it, then they might change it in between commits, and then we get diffs polluted with seemingly unchanged lines, just because someone removed or added a space. This already sounds like a pretty good reason to avoid it, but I do want to see if there's more to it than that. So, why is trailing whitespace such a big deal?

  • XMLPad – a new tool in my developer utility belt

    Yesterday I was on the lookout for a free tool that would help me write XPath statements. I put a shout out on Twitter and Johan Barnard replied saying : Give XMLPad a try http://www.wmhelp.com/xmlpad3.htm I’m sure there are legions of developers out there that know all about XMLPad but I had never heard about it so I suspect some of you reading haven’t either. Today I downloaded it to give it a run out and I gotta say – I love it. I only used it to do one thing –constructing an XPath expression to point to a particular Configuration definition in a .dtsx file- and it allowed me to do that with consummate ease. The feature I particularly loved was that, similar to Google Suggest, it showed me results from my expression as I typed. Here is a screenshot of my XPath expression to find (and just try saying this in a hurry) the value of a property whose DTS:Name attribute equals ‘ConfigurationString’ of a Configuration definition where the value of that Configuration definition’s property whose DTS:Name attribute equals ‘ObjectName’, equals ‘BIConfig My XPath expression: /DTS:Executable/DTS:Configuration[DTS:Property[@DTS:Name=’ObjectName’]=’BIConfig’]/DTS:Property[@DTS:Name=’ConfigurationString’] and believe me, there was no way I would have been able to come up with that without a tool to help me! So, an easy tip for you – if you need to write XPath expression download XMLPad for free from http://www.wmhelp.com/xmlpad3.htm and see what it can do for you. That’s all.     After I saw this answer, I realized that there are many guest accounts on my system: grep guest /etc/passwd guest-jzXeRx:x:117:127:Guest,,,:/tmp/guest-jzXeRx:/bin/false guest-l5dAPU:x:118:128:Guest,,,:/tmp/guest-l5dAPU:/bin/false guest-FdSAkw:x:119:129:Guest,,,:/tmp/guest-FdSAkw:/bin/false guest-eBU0cU:x:121:131:Guest,,,:/tmp/guest-eBU0cU:/bin/false Moreover, in this moment there is nobody logged as guest, but if somebody will login as guest, a new guest account is created - why, since there are already other guest accounts? After the new guest will log out, his account will be deleted. But why the other guest accounts remain? For what use/purpose? It doesn't mind me at all this guest account, but I want to know if it is okay to delete them manually.

  • Why do I get extra, unexpected results with my ack regex?

    I'm finally learning regexps and training with ack. I believe this uses Perl regexp. I want to match all lines where the first non-blank characters are if (<word> !, with any number of spaces in between the elements. This is what I came up with: ^[ \t]*if *\(\w+ *! It only nearly worked. ^[ \t]* is wrong, since it matches one or none [space or tab]. What I want is to match anything that may contain only space or tab (or nothing). For example these should not match: // if (asdf != 0) else if (asdf != 1) How can I modify my regexp for that? EDIT adding command line ack -i --group -a '^\s*if *\(\w+ *!' c:/work/proj/proj Note the single quotes, I'm not so sure about them anymore. My search base is a larger code base. It does include matching expressions (quite some), but even for example: 274: }else if (y != 0) , which I get as a result of the above command. Escaping the caret with ^^ does not work. Quoting the regex with " " instead of ' ' works. My problem was a DOS/win problem, sorry for bothering you all for that.

  • Why is email HTML stuck in the 90's?

    (disclaimer - I've already tried asking this on StackOverflow, but apparently it was off topic. If the same is true here please let me know and I'll close/delete this question.) I've spent about a day putting together a frustrating email newsletter, using tables, inline styles etc. It feels a lot harder than it should be. I was just wondering, is there any reason why email clients have such poor support of HTML and CSS (CSS in particular)? I would have imagined they'd be scrambling to outdo each other in this department ... Is is a security thing (I can't really imagine why)? Or are they just lazy?

  • Why ubuntu 12.04 Operating System too slow..?

    I was using ubuntu 10.10 from last year. every thing was Ok with that. recently I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 in place of 10.10, after installing that on my Dell laptop, I started to feel uncomfortable. It to slow event if you move mouse then its feel like i'll take 1min to move one place 2 another.. I know why this is happening, all because of 12.04 runs my CPU up to 99%-100% all over time. And there are 2-3 processes who use all the cpu.. like 1. System_Monitor 2. compiz I don't know why its use all the CPU even Other app can't able to run .. in Ubuntu 10.10 every think was Ok.. Any solution for this problem..!! | Thank's
