• conditional operator in C question

  I just have a quick question about the conditional operator. Still a budding programmer here. I am given x = 1, y = 2, and z = 3. I want to know, why after this statement: y += x-- ? z++ : --z; That y is 5. The values after the statement are x = 0, y = 5, and z = 4. I know the way the conditional operator works is that it is formatted like this: variable = condition ? value if true : value if false. For the condition, y += x-- , how does y become 5? I can only see 2 (2 += 0) and 3 (2 += 1)(then x-- becomes zero) as possibilities. Any help is much appreciated. :)

• PHP File Serving Script: Unreliable Downloads?

  This post started as a question on ServerFault ( http://serverfault.com/questions/131156/user-receiving-partial-downloads ) but I determined that our php script was the culprit. So I'm issuing an updated question here about what I believe is the actual issue. I am using a php script to verify permissions and then serve up a file for users of my website to download. Most of the time, this works, but recently one user has been seeing problems with larger downloads. He is only getting ~80% of downloads for files that are 100MB in size. Also, all downloads from this script fail to report a filesize. Further, tests revealed that the same user COULD reliably download each of the failed files if given a direct link (at which point the filesize is reported). Here's the relevant snippet of code that we are using to serve the file: header("Content-type:$contenttype"); $len = filesize($filename); header("Content-Length: $len"); header("Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=".$title.".".$ext); readfile($filename); Note that $contenttype, $filename, $title, and $ext are all set correctly before we get here. These have been triple-checked. None of them are the problem. Also, $len does provide the correct filesize. While researching this issue, I came across this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1334471/content-length-header-always-zero It seems that I am encountering the same issue. When I use the script, I get chunked encoding on the file and no size is set for content-length. I'm hypothesizing that something is going wrong on the large downloads, leading him to get a zero-length chunk before the end of the file.   I have tables A, B, C, where A represents items which can have zero or more sub-items stored in C. B table only has 2 foreign keys to connect A and C. I have this sql query: select * from A where not exists (select * from B natural join C where B.id = A.id and C.value > 10); Which says: "Give me every item from table A where all sub-items have value less than 10. Is there a way to optimize this? And is there a way to write this not using exists operator?

• Dynamic data validation in ASP.NET MVC

  I've recently read about the model validation capabilities of ASP.NET MVC which are all very cool until a certain point. What happens if the application doesn't know the data that it works with because it is all stored in DB and built together at runtime. Just like in Drupal, I'd like to be able to define custom types at runtime, and assign runtime validation rules as well. Obviously, the idea of assigning attributes to well established models is now gone. What else could be done ? I am thinking in terms of rules being stored as JSON objects in the DB fields or something like that.

• How can I make Excel's MIN function ignore zeroes in a set?

  In Excel, I have the following formula =(MIN(H69,H52,H35,H18)*(1/H18))*10 that is supposed to return the MIN of a range, and divide it by the current cell (*(1/H18) ), then multiply by 10. I am having difficulty with adding a type of NULLIF statement. I want to be able to have (the possibility for) blank rows, and have the MIN function ignore zero/blank fields while selecting the next lowest value (all are between 1.0-0.1). Is there a modifier i can apply to the MIN function to make it not compare zeroes in the MIN set? Is there a better funtion than MIN to use? This is to prevent the following situation: users will need to eliminate fields that are zeros from the form, theres 2 formula edits per entry, averaging 4 entries per use, so 8 possible errors per form use...

  Recently, I was confused by the std::map operator[] function. In the MSDN library, it says: "If the argument key value is not found, then it is inserted along with the default value of the data type." I tryed to search much more exactly explanation for this issue. For example here: std::map default value In this page, Michael Anderson said that "the default value is constructed by the default constructor(zero parameter constructor)". Now my quest comes to this:"what the default value for the build-in type?". Was it compiler related? Or is there a standard for this issue by the c++ stardard committee? I did a test on visual studio 2008 for the "int" type, and found the "int" type is construted with the value 0.

• Good way to format decimal in SQL Server

  We store a decimal(9,8) in our database. It can have any number of places after the decimal point (well, no more than 8). I am frustrated because I want to display it as human-readable text as part of a larger string created on the server. I want as many decimals to the right of the decimal point as are non-zero, for example: 0.05 0.12345 3.14159265 Are all good If I do CAST(d AS varchar(50)) I get formatting like: 0.05000000 0.12345000 3.14159265 I get similar output if I cast/convert to a float or other type before casting to a varchar. I know how to do a fixed number of decimal places, such as: 0.050 0.123 3.142 But that is not what I want. Yes, I know I can do this through complicated string manipulation (REPLACE, etc), there should be a good way to do it.

  I am using push scene to get the next scene. But, I read that for each PushScene the scene is stored in stack. The memory usage is more. So, I am using the replaceScene in place of pushScene. But, with replace scene I am getting the memory-bad-access message in debugger. So, I want to popScene after using it, so that the retain count is zero. But, I am confused in using popScene. If I have a Scene1 and Scene2. I used the following to go in to Scene2. Now I need to remove Scene1 from stack.   I am attempting to write a Genetic Algorithm based on techniques I had picked up from the book "AI Techniques for Game Programmers" that uses a binary encoding and fitness proportionate selection (also known as roulette wheel selection) on the genes of the population that are randomly generated within the program in a two-dimensional array. I recently came across a piece of pseudocode and have tried to implement it, but have come across some problems with the specifics of what I need to be doing. I've checked a number of books and some open-source code and am still struggling to progress. I understand that I have to get the sum of the total fitness of the population, pick a random number between the sum and zero, then if the number is greater than the parents to overwrite it, but I am struggling with the implementation of these ideas. Any help in the implementation of these ideas would be very much appreciated as my Java is rusty.

• Large Scale VHDL techniques

  I'm thinking about implimenting a 16 bit CPU in VHDL. A simplish CPU. ADD, MULS, NEG, BitShift, JUMP, Relitive Jump, BREQ, Relitive BREQ, i don't know somethign along these lines Probably all only working with 16bit operands. I might even cut it down and use only a single operand and a accumulator. With Some status regitsters, Carry, Zero, Neg (unless i use a Accumlator), I know how to design all the parts from logic gates, and plan to build them up from first priciples, So for my ALU I'll need to 'build' a ADDer, proably a Carry Look ahead, group adder, this adder it self is make up oa a couple of parts, wich are themselves made up of a couple of parts. Anyway, my problem is not the CPU design, or the VHDL (i know the language, more or less). It's how i should keep things organised. How should I use packages, How should I name my processes and port maps? (i've never seen the benifit of naming the port maps, or processes)

  Hi, I have started using Python for web development recently, it's kinda cool; I have seen programs that are developed in QT/C++, which is good enough in terms of esthetics; I have just noticed the new PySide project (which brings LGPL Qt license to Python and it doesn't support Windows yet). In view of the above, I see the possibility of using Python + PyQt/PySide to develop cross platform apps in the future :) but I have several doubts right now: Can PyQty/PySide be used to develop really complex/modern UI? Can somebody give me some points to have a look at some nice-looking screenshots of apps that are developed in Python+QT? What about the performance? Thanks in advance!

• Resize an asp.net panel width based on a checkboxlist?

  Hi everyone, I have an asp.net panel that contains a checkboxlist. I'd like to resize it so that its width fits the list's contents snugly. Right now I'm handling the panel's pre rendering event, setting its width to match that of the checkboxlist. However it appears the checkboxlist's width property reads zero (at least in this pre render method) so the panel's width is set identically, which leads to inconsistent renderings in Firefox vs IE. Does anyone have a better approach to doing what I'm attempting here? Many thanks.

  I'm trying to animate a rotation using CATransform3DMakeRotation, but the problem is once the animation is finished, the image goes back to its initial position, i.e back to zero. But I'd like to keep it where it finished rotating. How would I do that? edit What I'm trying to do is to create the same compass which comes with the new iPhone. Basically the locationmanager gives me new headings every few seconds (or several per second). Using the new heading and the timestamp, I was trying to get a smooth animation of the image but not getting anywhere. The only thing which seems to work is applying the transform directly, e.g. compassimage.layer.transform = CATransform3DMakeRotation(newHeading.trueHeading *M_PI/180,0,0,1.0): but that's not animated...

• Difference between BOOST_CHECK_CLOSE and BOOST_CHECK_CLOSE_FRACTION?

  Can anyone describe the difference in behavior between BOOST_CHECK_CLOSE and BOOST_CHECK_CLOSE_FRACTION? The documentation implies the that both macros treat their third parameter identically, which makes me suspect the documentation is wrong. In particular, BOOST_CHECK_CLOSE_FRACTION gives me some odd looking results: error in "...": difference between *expected{0} and *actual{-1.7763568394002506e-16} exceeds 9.9999999999999995e-07 Is there a gotcha because I expect a zero result? I've not been successful at reading through the underlying macro declarations. Please note BOOST_CHECK_SMALL isn't appropriate for my use case (comparing two vectors after a linear algebra operation).

  Douglas Crockford describes the consequence of Javascript inquiring a node's style. How simply asking for the margin of a div causes the browser to 'reflow' the div in the browser's rendering engine four times. So that made me wonder, during the initial rendering of a page (or in Crockford's jargon a "web scroll") is it faster to write CSS that defines only the non-zero/non-default values? To provide an example: div{ margin-left:2px; } Than div{ margin:0 0 0 2px; } I know consequence of this 'savings' is insignificant, but I think it is still important to understand how the technologies are implemented. • Using a ControlParameter in FilterParameters when the property is null

  I have a DataList and FormView; they have separate datasources, though they pull the same info. The FormView's datasource has a FilterExpression to pull whatever's been selected on the DataList. On first load, the SelectedValue of the DataList is null (naturally). I expect the FilterExpression to result in zero rows, but it doesn't. If I set the DefaultValue to 0, it does, but then the parameter never updates when I select something from the DataList. Am I doing it wrong?
