• Rendering PDF on WebPage

  Hi. We are trying to load a pdf file in web browser using pdfobject javascript api. Currently the size of the pdf's that we are trying to display is close to 10MBs. This creates a long delay in displaying a PDF on web page; while the complete PDF gets downloaded. We need to remove this lag by achieving either of the alternatives: Show a progress bar until the PDF is actually displayed. We couldn't find an event which is triggered and can be used to find out if pdf is visible now. This lacking doesn't let us decide when to stop showing progress bar/spinner OR lazy load the PDF such that it gets displayed as soon as first page gets loaded. With that ateast user will have a visual indication as to something is happening. We couldn'find anything in pdf object that lets us do a lazy load. User alternative pdf rendering api; this is a low priority as we already have complete code in place; but in an event of first 2 alternatives not being met; we'd have to consider this option. So please feel free to suggest. Any other ideas as to how user interaction can be made more intuitive or pleasant; would be welcome. Cheers

  I've build a command-line tool in Java, which I would now like to profile with YourKit. I launch the command-line tool with something like: $ java -classpath .:foo.bar.jar com.foobar.tools.TheTool arg1 arg2 arg3 It runs to completion in less than 2 seconds. I could add a command-line option that will have it pause for input, and I won't press return for it to continue until I've connected to it from YourKit. Is there a YourKit API that I could add to my tool that would cause it to block until I've connected with YourKit? Is there a YourKit API or a java command-line option that would create a profiling "snapshot" that I could load and analyze later (after the command-line tool has completed) with YourKit?

• Cucumber could not find table; but its there. What is going on?

• Navigation view system with webview problem with touches!

  Hello i have search everything and i didn't figure this out! I have a tab bar controller with 5 navigation controlls, in one of the navigation control, i have a view, with a table view inside, and when i click that item i push a new view, that view have view -webview -view i create that second view(is transperant) because i need to handle a single tap to hide my toolbar and navigation bar, and the webview was eating all the touches! So i thought everything was working, i'm able to scroll, but now when i have links i'm not able to click them. And the webview is detecting the links i have made that test. So any other way to implements this to get the touches in the links, or i should change this workaround to hide the toolbars so i can have the full functionability of the webview? • Abusing the word "library"

  I see a lot of questions, both here on SO and elsewhere, about "maintaining common libraries in a VCS". That is, projects foo and bar both depend on libbaz, and the questioner is wondering how they should import the source for libbaz into the VCS for each project. My question is: WTF? If libbaz is a library, then foo doesn't need its source code at all. There are some libraries that are reasonably designed to be used in this manner (eg gnulib), but for the most part foo and bar ought to just link against the library. I guess my thinking is: if you cut-and-paste source for a library into your own source tree, then you obviously don't care about future updates to the library. If you care about updates, then just link against the library and trust the library maintainers to maintain a stable API. If you don't trust the API to remain stable, then you can't blindly update your own copy of the source anyway, so what is gained? To summarize the question: why would anyone want to maintain a copy of a library in the source code for a project rather than just linking against that library and requiring it as a dependency? If the only answer is "don't want the dependency", then why not just distribute a copy of the library along with your app, but keep them totally separate?

  Hi guys, I'm currently building a dynamic menu bar(vertical and horizontal). in the default position its vertical. the user have the option to show the horizontal position and hide and vertical. I am currently doing that with javascript/ jquery. in order to keep the menu bar in the horizontal position i am keeping a count with a cookie. the problem is that when i use the click function in javascript i want to change the value of the cookie. i have no knowledge of how to do this.   I can't believe I'm back to this after working with WPF for 3 months :) Consider very common setup: How do I configure the rowheights so that the top and bottom rows (menu bar and status bar) size to fit the height of their content, and the middle row (main content), fills the remaining available space in the program? • When does invoking a member function on a null instance result in undefined behavior?

Is it calling a member function through an invalid pointer? Or is it calling a member function that accesses member data through an invalid pointer? With the answer deleted I figured we might as well make it it's own question. Consider the following code: #include <iostream> struct foo { void bar(void) { std::cout << "gman was here" << std::endl; } void baz(void) { x = 5; } int x; }; int main(void) { foo* f = 0; f->bar(); // (a) f->baz(); // (b) } We expect (b) to crash, because there is no corresponding member x for the null pointer. In practice, (a) doesn't crash because the this pointer is never used. Because (b) dereferences the this pointer (this->x = 5;), and this is null, the program enters undefined behavior. Does (a) result in undefined behavior? What about if both functions are static?

• Getting the size of the window WITHOUT title/notification bars

  Hi there, I've been playing around with Android development and one of the things I'd like to be able to do is dynamically create a background image for my windows, similar to the one below. This is from my BlackBerry app. It consists of three separate parts, the bottom right logo, the top left watermark, and the bottom right name. It works independent of screen size because the BlackBerry app just gets all three parts and generates an appropriately sized bitmap using the screen width and height. Since Android has quite a bit more screen resolution possibilities I need to be able to generate backgrounds on the fly like this. However, I have not found any way to get the height/width of the window in Android. I can get the screen resolution, but that includes the application title bar and the notification bar, which is unacceptable. I'd like to know how to get the size of my window, or screen resolution minus the title and notification bars. I think this might be possible using the dimensions of my layout managers but I cannot get the height/width of them in the onCreate method so I'm at a little bit of a loss. Thanks.

  I created a cab file that contains my activex using CABARC.exe. I also created an .inf file. My inf file looks like this: [version] signature="$CHICAGO$" AdvancedINF=2.0 [Add.Code] MySetup.exe=MySetup.exe [MySetup.exe] file-win32-x86=thiscab clsid={49892510-B520-4b35-8ADF-57084DD2F717} My html looks like this: <object name="secondobj" style='display:none' id='TestActivex' classid='CLSID:49892510-B520-4b35-8ADF-57084DD2F717' codebase='http://myurl/MySetup.cab#version=1,0,0,0'></object> I created the CABARC using the following commmand: C:\tools\Cab\BIN>CABARC.EXE N MySetup.cab MySetup.msi setup.inf I also added http://myurl to the trusted sites. Now the first time I opened the html page in IE, I saw a yellow bar, which I accepted. However it never installed the activex control. I dont see the installation in my program files nor can I see anything in the event logs or in the temporary download folder or in the "manage add-ons". Now everytime I open the webpage in IE, I do not see the yellow bar anymore. Can anybody help me out here please?

So, here goes the question: Are you using in your code NAMESPACE_SEPARATOR constant? • How to best show progress info when using ADO.NET?

  I want to show the user detailed progress information when performing potentially lengthy database operations. Specifically, when inserting/updating data that may be on the order of hundreds of KB or MB. Currently, I'm using in-memory DataTables and DataRows which are then synced with the database via TableAdapter.Update calls. This works fine and dandy, but the single call leaves little opportunity to glean any kind of progress info to show to the user. I have no idea how much data is passing through the network to the remote DB or its progress. Basically, all I know is when Update returns and it is assumed complete (barring any errors or exceptions). But this means all I can show is 0% and then a pause and then 100%. I can count the number of rows, even going so far to cound how many are actually Modified or Added, and I could even maybe calculate per DataRow its estimated size based on the datatype of each column, using sizeof for value types like int and checking length for things like strings or byte arrays. With that, I could probably determine, before updating, an estimated total transfer size, but I'm still stuck without any progress info once Update is called on the TableAdapter. Am I stuck just using an indeterminate progress bar or mouse waiting cursor? Would I need to radically change our data access layer to be able to hook into this kind of information? Even if I can't get it down to the precise KB transferred (like a web browser file download progress bar), could I at least know when each DataRow/DataTable finishes or something? How do you best show this kind of progress info using ADO.NET?

• Properly changing Ajax MultiHandle Slider parameters on postbacks

  Hi all, In VS2010 I have VB.NET codebehind aspx pages and I'm using Ajax multihandleslider extensions to filter search results on numerical values. Fistly, the multihandle sliders don't display in the designer... I have to remove the slider targets tag: In order to make it display in the designer... this isn't so much a big issue but an annoyance. I am displaying items in a given category. So I get the max and min prices for all items in that category and assign the sliderextension max/min values appropriately. This works fine until... I change the item category and go get a new max/min value for the slider control. I set the max/min values, then I set the target textbox values each to the corresponding max/min values. The slider handles don't repaint (or init?) properly Like say for example my initial min/max is 1/100 if I do a full postback and change the max value to 1000 then the slider bar (correctly) stays the same size but the handle appears WAYYYY to the right off the page and I have to scroll to it. When I click it, it shoots back onto the slider bar. I'm pulling my hair out... why do the slider handles only appear properly when I first set the min/max values?

• Explaining the need to avoid horizontal scroll

  I need help explaining to my boss why her design is poor on a client's website. She has no knowledge of the web, and it can be difficult as a web developer working with a woman who is a graphic designer (not even a web designer really). On a current site she has designed, an image bar "needs" to be ~1200px according to her, though it isn't necessary with the content. A quick sketch to illustrate what's going on: As you see, the banner spills out past the 960px of the content and as wide as 1200px. This creates a horizontal scroll when all the content is viewable within the 960px wide viewport. I need to make this an <img and not a CSS background because it's a jQuery slideshow that fades from image to image. I think this is a big problem because a lot of people are going to get a horizontal scroll bar imposed in their browser when they're still able to see all the relevant content. She thinks no one will notice and it'll be fine; I think it's very bad practice and confusing to the end user. How do I explain the problem to her?

• Dismissing UIImagePickerController from UITabBarController

  I have a tab bar application whereby one tab uses a navigation controller to move through a series of views. On the final view, there is a button to add a photo, which presents a UIImagePickerController. So far, so good - however when I finish picking the image, or cancel the operation, the previous view is loaded, but without the tab bar. I'm sure I'm missing something elementary, but any suggestions on how to properly release the UIImagePickerController would be much appreciated. • iReport / jFreeChart - Combining getItemPaint() override and series colors

  I'm attempting to create a bar chart that needs to use specific series colors for N number of categories and a separate color for 1 other category. Here is an example: http://i.imgur.com/1DeCF.png (Sorry, I don't have enough points to embed images yet) In the mockup, Categories 1-3 use a collection of 5 colors to render their series while Category 4 uses a single grey color. My first approach was to override the getItemPaint() method using a customizer class, but I can only figure out how to define a color on the category level, not the series level. Is it possible to define colors on category and/or series levels? Something like, If category != "Category4" Use colors A, B, C, D, and E in category's series Else Use color F in category's series Another thought I had was to combine iReport's Series Colors bar chart property and the getItemPaint() override; that way I could define the 5 colors to use in iReport and use the getItemPaint() override only in the case where the category equals "Category 4". So far I've had no luck combining the two; if the override is defined it overrides iReport's Series Color property.

• UINavigationController flashes white when I add it to a superview

  Hey guys, I'm adding a NavigationController as a subview of my main view, with the flip animation (like a utility app/flipview thing). • Parsing/Tokenizing a String Containing a SQL Command

  Are there any open source libraries (any language, python/PHP preferred) that will tokenize/parse an ANSI SQL string into its various components? That is, if I had the following string SELECT a.foo, b.baz, a.bar FROM TABLE_A a LEFT JOIN TABLE_B b ON a.id = b.id WHERE baz = 'snafu'; I'd get back a data structure/object something like //fake PHPish $results['select-columns'] = Array[a.foo,b.baz,a.bar]; $results['tables'] = Array[TABLE_A,TABLE_B]; $results['table-aliases'] = Array[a=TABLE_A, b=TABLE_B]; //etc... Restated, I'm looking for the code in a database package that teases the SQL command apart so that the engine knows what to do with it. Searching the internet turns up a lot of results on how to parse a string WITH SQL. That's not what I want. I realize I could glop through an open source database's code to find what I want, but I was hoping for something a little more ready made, (although if you know where in the MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite source to look, feel free to pass it along) Thanks!

• Internet Explorer cannot 'fully' load ActiveX Control

  Context I am migrating an installer for an ActiveX control from Per-Machine to Per-User. I did this by programming the installer write to HKCU\Software\Classes instead of HKLM\Software\Classes. Problem On my machine (Windows 7 with UAC Enabled), the ActiveX control successfully loads. On the other windows 7 test machines (one with UAC enabled, one with UAC disabled), the control 'partially' loads. What is Partially? When a user visits a page with the ActiveX control, Internet Explorer displays a warning message in a yellow bar on the top of the window. If you click the 'Run add-on' button in the bar, the control becomes visible and begins to run, but Javascript code that tries to access properties of the control return the error: Library not registered. Differences between machines On the dev machine reads from HKCR\CLSID\<GUID> succeed while on the test machines these reads fail. Reads from HKCU succeed on both dev and test machines. Reads from HKLM fail on both test and dev machines. (I collected reads using Sysinternals Process Monitor) Strangely, the keys that Internet Explorer fails to read are clearly visible if I use regedit to view HKCR\CLSID\<GUID> on the test machines. Question What can I do to get the per-user control to load on the test machines? What could cause this difference between the dev machine and the test machines? Why can I see the key in HKCR with RegEdit but Internet Explorer cannot see the key? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

• How to estimate size of data to transfer when using DbCommand.ExecuteXXX?

  I want to show the user detailed progress information when performing potentially lengthy database operations. Specifically, when inserting/updating data that may be on the order of hundreds of KB or MB. Currently, I'm using in-memory DataTables and DataRows which are then synced with the database via TableAdapter.Update calls. This works fine and dandy, but the single call leaves little opportunity to glean any kind of progress info to show to the user. I have no idea how much data is passing through the network to the remote DB or its progress. Basically, all I know is when Update returns and it is assumed complete (barring any errors or exceptions). But this means all I can show is 0% and then a pause and then 100%. I can count the number of rows, even going so far to cound how many are actually Modified or Added, and I could even maybe calculate per DataRow its estimated size based on the datatype of each column, using sizeof for value types like int and checking length for things like strings or byte arrays. With that, I could probably determine, before updating, an estimated total transfer size, but I'm still stuck without any progress info once Update is called on the TableAdapter. Am I stuck just using an indeterminate progress bar or mouse waiting cursor? Would I need to radically change our data access layer to be able to hook into this kind of information? Even if I can't get it down to the precise KB transferred (like a web browser file download progress bar), could I at least know when each DataRow/DataTable finishes or something? How do you best show this kind of progress info using ADO.NET?

• Building a many-to-many db schema using only an unpredictable number of foreign keys

  Good afternoon (at least around here), I have a many-to-many relationship schema that I'm having trouble building. The main problem is that I'm only working with primary and foreign keys (no varchars or enums to simplify things) and the number of many-to-many relationships is not predictable and can increase at any time. I looked around at various questions and couldn't find something that directly addressed this issue. I split the problem in half, so I now have two one-to-many schemas. One is solved but the other is giving me fits. Let's assume table FOO is a standard, boring table that has a simple primary key. It's the one in the one-to-many relationship. Table BAR can relate to multiple keys of FOO. The number of related keys is not known beforehand. An example: From a query FOO returns ids 3, 4, 5. BAR needs a unique key that relates to 3, 4, 5 (though there could be any number of ids returned) The usual join table does not work: Table FOO_BAR primary_key | foo_id | bar_id | Since FOO returns 3 unique keys and here bar_id has a one-to-one relationship with foo_id. Having two join tables does not seem to work either, as it still can't map foo_ids 3, 4, 5 to a single bar_id. Table FOO_TO_BAR primary_key | foo_id | bar_to_foo_id | Table BAR_TO_FOO primary_key | foo_to_bar_id | bar_id | What am I doing wrong? Am I making things more complicated than they are? I need to pass an instance of a previuosly initialized object (in the example, an instance of the Something class) at the callback function. I tryed to use call_user_func(), but doesnt work (becose in this way i miss the matches parameter). Is there a way to do that, or have i to separate the process (doing before preg_match_all, for each match retrieve the replace value, and then a simple preg_replace)?

• How to stop my firefox extension which interferes other extension?

  Hi, I have tried very hard to make my extension as simple as possible, it now do not contain any skin/css, it just have 'statusbar' in one single 'overlay'. The issue is that when installed, it hides the top three icon of 'all-in-one toolbar' extension of my firefox 3.6.3.
