• Setting Rails up on a Linode - Nginx Issue

  I am extremely new to this so please don't shoot me down: I have set up a Linode running Ubuntu, It is all sort of working except Nginx. I am following this guide: http://rubysource.com/deploying-a-rails-application/ And this for nginx: http://library.linode.com/web-servers/nginx/installation/ubuntu-10.04-lucid When I go to my IP, I get a 500 internal server error. I have tried starting nginx and it looks like it starts fine. I run this: ps awx | grep nginx and I get: 308 ? Ss 0:00 nginx: master process /usr/sbin/nginx 2309 ? S 0:00 nginx: worker process 2311 ? S 0:00 nginx: worker process 2312 ? S 0:00 nginx: worker process 2313 ? S 0:00 nginx: worker process 2850 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep --color=auto nginx I really am not sure what else to do to get it running. • Sagem Router Wifi Key Issue

  Hi I have a multiservices sagem router which supports wifi as well, the pack came up with a default wifi configuration key and a WEP Key in the label of the package like this: WIFI Configuration key: abcd1234 WEP Key: C4H2F167C10263AEB98V52920E Now, when i execute the wifi usb wizard in the official cd, it asks me for the WIFI key, i put the abcd1234 & it says it's incorrect, i try the long WEP key and it says that the key should only have 8 characters. When i go to the control panel of the router in the wifi config, i see that: Open Authentification System WEP 128 Bit Passphrase: C4H2F167C10263AEB98V52920E Now since the wizard only accepts 8 characters, i try to change the 128bit to 64bit and put some 8 characters and it ends up saying that the new key should be 5 or 13, or 10-26 hex numbers. • Replaced CPU and black screen but no beep?

  I'm having a bit of trouble with a GIGABYTE GA-MA78G-DS3H (rev. 2.0) motherboard. Recently when trying to clean my AMD Phenom II X 4 CPU, I dropped it and broke some pins. I have now brought a Athlon 64 X2 5400+. However, it does not seem to work. To begin with, I cleared the CMOS via the jumper located near the battery. This was because I had my AMD Phenom II overclocked and did not wish for the same voltage to go to the new CPU. I then tried booting with the monitor plugged into the chipsets VGA but no luck. No signal was sent to the monitor, and the monitor just went into standby. I then tried it off the graphics card but the same happened again. Then I tried to check whether the CPU could executed some BIOS codes by stripping the RAM out and making sure a speaker was plugged in but no beeps could be heard. I replaced the speaker and tried again but no luck. The CPU is brand-new so what is going wrong?

• Linux iptables / conntrack performance issue

  I have a test-setup in the lab with 4 machines: 2 old P4 machines (t1, t2) 1 Xeon 5420 DP 2.5 GHz 8 GB RAM (t3) Intel e1000 1 Xeon 5420 DP 2.5 GHz 8 GB RAM (t4) Intel e1000 to test linux firewall performance since we got bitten by a number of syn-flood attacks in the last months. All machines run Ubuntu 12.04 64bit. t1, t2, t3 are interconnected through an 1GB/s switch, t4 is connected to t3 via an extra interface. So t3 simulates the firewall, t4 is the target, t1,t2 play the attackers generating a packetstorm thorugh (192.168.4.199 is t4): hping3 -I eth1 --rand-source --syn --flood 192.168.4.199 -p 80 t4 drops all incoming packets to avoid confusion with gateways, performance issues of t4 etc. I watch the packet stats in iptraf. I have configured the firewall (t3) as follows: stock 3.2.0-31-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP kernel rhash_entries=33554432 as kernel parameter sysctl as follows: net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 net.ipv4.route.gc_elasticity = 2 net.ipv4.route.gc_timeout = 1 net.ipv4.route.gc_interval = 5 net.ipv4.route.gc_min_interval_ms = 500 net.ipv4.route.gc_thresh = 2000000 net.ipv4.route.max_size = 20000000 (I have tweaked a lot to keep t3 running when t1+t2 are sending as many packets as possible). The result of this efforts are somewhat odd: t1+t2 manage to send each about 200k packets/s. t4 in the best case sees aroung 200k in total so half of the packets are lost. t3 is nearly unusable on console though packets are flowing through it (high numbers of soft-irqs) the route cache garbage collector is no way near to being predictable and in the default setting overwhelmed by very few packets/s (<50k packets/s) activating stateful iptables rules makes the packet rate arriving on t4 drop to around 100k packets/s, efectively losing more than 75% of the packets And this - here is my main concern - with two old P4 machines sending as many packets as they can - which means nearly everyone on the net should be capable of this. So here goes my question: Did I overlook some importand point in the config or in my test setup? Are there any alternatives for building firewall system especially on smp systems?

• Strange issue in header location redirect

  I have three websites hosted (example1.com, example2.com, example3.com) on a server. There is a page (test.php) on example1.com with just code below inside it: <?php header('Location:http://example2.com/a.php'); ?> When I browse test.php it goes to http://example1.com/a.php . it doesn't understand it is another domain url, it tried to find the page on itself. but when I put http://google.com instead of example2.com/a.php it works correct. I really get confused. What is the problem ? Should I set some configuration on the server? ( I am administrator of the hosting server ). Ps. The server is behind a pound server. • Issue using a "used" SSD as a Windows 8.1 Boot Drive

  So, I'm something of a Mac person, but decided to take a stab at this whole "build yourself a PC" thing - right now, the thing is assembled, posts just fine, and can get to the BIOS. The problem is the drive I want to use - I intended to use a 80 GB Corsair SSD I've had sitting around as the boot drive, and a new Samsung SSD for games and the like. So I boot using a Windows 8.1 install USB stick, and if the Samsung drive is plugged in, it happily offers to install Windows on it. The Corsair drive though, it's flipped out - I reformatted it as a blank NTFS drive (it was HFS for Mac purposes) and the BIOS can't see it, nor can the Windows installer. What's wrong, and how do I fix it? The tools at my disposal are: The current ASUS BIOS that came with my motherboard (a Z87I-Deluxe), a Mac running the latest OS X which can also boot to Windows 7 if needed via either Parallels or Bootcamp. Update 1: Update: Based on a friend's suggestion to switch SATA ports, Windows 8.1's installer can now see the drive as Drive 0, Partition 1, a 83.8 GB "Primary" partition. But when I click it and hit "Next", I get the following error: "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files" - not that it gives any clue how to access those. Update 2: Following a trail of Google suggestions, I ended up going into advanced tools and just reformatting the drive as follows: Start DISKPART. Type LIST DISK and identify your SSD disk number (from 0 to n disks). Type SELECT DISK <n> where <n> is your SSD disk number. Type CLEAN Type CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY Type ACTIVE Type FORMAT FS=NTFS QUICK Type ASSIGN Type EXIT twice (one to get out of DiskPart, the other to exit the command line tool) Per these instructions. This goes well enough, but now I can select the disk for installation, and I get a new error: "Windows 8 cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GP disks." So, Googling that, I do the following: select disk 0 clean convert gpt exit ...and we might have fixed it. Windows is at least trying to install now.

  I am reverse proxying one site to another site. It's working nicely, but on some links it displays the original link. When I click on "about-us" it takes me to "http://test.mysite.com/about-us" which is ok When I click on "inquiry" it takes me to "http://mysite.com/inquiry" which is not correct it must be "http://test.mysite.com/inquiry". I think I've missed some thing to add in configuration file but I can't figure it out.

• Caching issue with Centos forwarding DNS server

  I installed a Forwarding DNS server on Centos 5.10 and it is resolving addresses e.g google.com. When I stopped named (service named stop) and tried to dig (dig @localhost A google.com) there was a failure to resolve the address. I checked and see the caching daemon nscd is running. Does this mean the server is not caching at all? • Windows 8 blue screen error watchdog violation

  My system is windows 8 pro rtm x64. Recently my system started hanging frequently. Nothing but the restart button works. But now just after hanging it showed me a BSOD error saying watchdog violation. I used bluscreen viewer to see the error in the memory dump and it showed me something about hal.dll, ntoskrnl.exe. This is what windows showed me. • Multi-monitors and the corners of the screen

  I currently have two monitors (let's call them "left" and "middle" - you'll see why in a sec), and would love three (let's call it "right"). However, I often will throw the mouse-cursor up to the top-right corner on "middle" because for a maximised window that's where the close button will be. If I add the "right" monitor, the mouse cursor will just carry on off "middle" into "right", and aiming for the close button on "middle" will become more difficult. I'm currently using UltraMon 3.10, but does anyone know of a way to get the mouse to stick to the corners, so that it doesn't go off into the other monitor (Synergy allows this by configuring the "gap" where the mouse is allowed to travel from monitor to monitor).

• Router(s) Issue: DNS quries sporadically fail with multiple computers hooked in

  Basically, after anywhere from 5-60 minutes, DNS queries fail for a few minutes, then slowly begin to resolve correctly. Then the cycle repeats. This occurs only when more than one computer is on the network. All computers on the network experiences the same sporadic DNS outage at the same time. Wireless or wired, Linux or Windows, fresh OS install or old, browser or ping, same symptoms. Duplicated on 3 routers (not chained together, mind you) and 3 ISP's and 3 separate locations over the past several months. The only common theme is a single 5-yo WIN XP laptop which has been in use on the network throughout all this. There also may be anywhere between 1 - 10 devices hooked up wired or wirelessly at a time. The only reprieve I have from this torture is by using any VPN to an outside source - always smooth sailing. I typically set up any router to a) use WPA2/etc security; b) MAC whitelist; c) UPNP OFF (if available); d) always update firmware when available; e) obtain DNS from ISP automatically; f) set the router to act as DHCP server for the internal network. Adjusting channels has no effect. Any ideas?

  I'm looking specifically for a convenient way to locally archive posts from this and other similar sites. I'd like to separate the question itself from the answers, or maybe crop the question and store it, keeping the page title. Obviously I don't need to store the menu or the various other site interface chrome. The best way to do this would seem to be to associate an XSLT template with a match on the URL and use that template to pull the various relevant informations and format them. My two-part question: Is there a tool specifically built for this task? I.E. something that takes a URL and checks it against a map of path-matching expressions to templates, and outputs the result of applying the template to that resource? xmlto seems to be most of the way there, and could probably just be called from a script that does the pattern-matching, but something already integrated would be more convenient. Is such a URL_pattern-to-XSLT_template map publicly available somewhere? Question 2.5: Is it legal to do this with sites like this one that have public licenses on their content?

• Windows 7 Sharing issue on RAID 5 Array(s)

  Greetings all, I'm having a very odd error with a windows 7 ultimate x64 system. The network system setup is as follows: 2x XP Pro 32 Bit machines 1x Vista ultimate x64 machine 2x Windows 7 x64 Ultimate machines all chained into 1x 16 port netgear prosafe gigabit switch, the windows 7 & vista machines are duplexed. Also there is a router (netgear Rangemax) chained off the switch I am basically using one of the windows 7 machines to host storage & stream media to other machines. To this end i have put 2x 3tb hardware RAID 5 arrays in it and assorted other spare disks which i have shared the roots of. The unusual problems start when i am getting Access denied, Please contact administrator for permission blah blah blah when trying to access both of the RAID 5 arrays but not the other stand alones. I have checked the permission settings, i have added everyone to the read permission for the root, i have tried moving things into sub directories then sharing them. I have tried various setting combinations in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa and always the same. I have tried flushing caches all round, disabling and re-enabling shares & sharing after restart as well as several other things & the result is always the same... No problem on individual drives but access denied on both the RAID arrays from both XP & Vista & Windows 7 machines. One interesting quirk that may lead to an answer is that there is no "offline status" information regarding the folders when you select the RAID 5s from a windows 7 machine yet there is on the normal drives which say they are online. It is as if the raid is present but turned off or spun down but as far as i was aware windows will spin an array back up on network request and on the machine itself the drives seem to be online and can be accessed. Have to admit this has me stumped. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks in advance for any fellow geek assistance. K.A.I.N

  I'm using Arch Linux + xmonad + urxvt bundle and trying to resolve the conflict between xmonad and urxvt. Better to explain with shots: Firstly, open the terminal and get some full-length output. Secondly, create another window, which squeezes the first. And, finally, close it to find out that half of the output disappeared. Sometimes it behaves correctly, sometimes not. • IPv6 scope id issue with IE

  I have an ASP.NET website that works with Firefox because FF doesn't need the % in the scope-id to be encoded (%25). The website also works on the same machine using IE because I can leave out the scope-id. However, to access the website from another machine in the network, I need to add the scope-id to the IPv6 address. For some reason, using the scope-id doesn't allow an authentication cookie to be created, and the website keeps going back to the login page. Anyone using IE7+ to access an ASP.NET website on a network using IPv6 with an encoded %?

• Static IP addressing issue in Ubuntu on BeagleBoneBlack Rev C

  I have my BBB configured to use a static IP address using the following in the file /etc/network/interfaces: allow-hotplug eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.0.0 This seems to work ok on boot, but when the ethernet cable is unplugged and then plugged back in, I lose the IP address. Any ideas what's going on here? Another weird symptom: If I boot the BBB with the network cable unplugged, but the switch it's plugged into off, I'll get my static IP. But, when I turn the switch on, I'll get a DHCP-assigned address. This is even though I have it configured with a static IP address. One last thing. If I ifdown etho, the interface will be gone when I do an ifconfig. If I wait a few seconds, though, and then re-run ifconfig, it will reappear, without an IP address. (Before I disabled IPv6, I used to get a IPv4 DHCP address in this case... weird). • How to stop Vista from auto changing video resolution?

  I have new Acer Aspire Revo R3600 computer with Vista pre-installed. The computer has NVidia video adapter. While connecting 17" LCD monitor (LG L1742S) via VGA cable it works fine, and I can change the resolution of the display from max 1920*1024 down to some other value, and after reboot the settings are restored correctly. But when I'm connecting bigger full HD 1920*1080 display (LG E2250) via VGA cable then every boot I have the same problem: I see boot progress window, then I see MS logo, then I see welcome screen then I start to see desktop and suddenly monitor switch off and show me the message about unsupported frequency of input signal As I understand Vista tries to auto-change resolution and sets wrong parameters. I've tried to boot into safe mode and into low-resolution mode, every time I have the same problem: Vista boot-up and suddenly monitor stops working. I've tried to connect this monitor to notebook with Windows XP and has no problem to work with this display on its native resolution. How can I disable this display resolution auto-changer in Vista? Or maybe there is another workaround?

  I have a samba share that is on the LAN. It is auth'd via ldap. Users access file system via ad windows shares. There are shortcuts in directories that point to dir's on samba. Typically a user will click the shortcut to the smb dir, and will be met with a permission denied error. Upon closing explorer and reopening, it will work. DNS is handled by the domain controller, and that is the only server any of the machines use for DNS. Nothing in eventvwr. Only see successful auth entries in samba log. Any ideas?

  When going through Apache 2.2 access logs, logging with the %D directive (The time taken to serve the request, in microseconds), that it's very common for a 200 response to have a given number of bytes, but a "time to serve" of zero. For example, a given URL might be requested 10 times in a single day, and a 200 response is sent for them all, and all return, say 1000 bytes. However, 7 of them have a "time to serve" of zero, while the other 3 have a time to serve of 1 second. Is this simply because the request was served faster than the resolution of the timer Apache uses?

  Have created a tunnel between 10.x.y.z network and 122.a.b.c ..the tunnel is up and active, but when I try the packet tracer output ..I get the ACTION as drop. I have also enabled same-security-traffic permit intra-interface. Can someone help me what does this drop mean? • Windows 7 Task bar + Chrome tab Issue

  When you have say more then one file or something open or window (not tabs), the windows 7 task bar combines or stacks them on top of each other. Well my chrome started to do that with tabs. It looks like I have more then one chrome window open, but its just tabs all in one window. So when I click on the stacked chrome on my task bar it shows a preview of each tab and then goes to that tab. I would much rather have it be one chrome icon rather then stacked and then I can select my tab. The preview for the many tabs I have open is annoying me. I know this has to be something I accidental turned on because it did not do this before nor does it do it on my other computers. Thank you.

• Linux Firefox copy/paste issue

  I'm using Firefox 15.0.1 on Fedora 17 without running gnome or kde. The problem I'm having is that whenever I select text outside of Firefox, for instance in xterm, the middle mouse button doesn't copy it inside Firefox, for instance in a text area, but rather brings up a context menu. A related problem is that whenever I middle click inside Firefox, for instance in a text input, the middle mouse button brings up a menu when I'd like it to paste. Even if I select Paste in the menu not the selected text (from outside Firefox) gets pasted but the last selected text inside Firefox. In about:config I tried "middlemouse.paste true" and also "middlemouse.paste false" together with the add-on Auto Copy but no combination worked. A middle mouse click always brings up a context menu. But the Auto Copy did help with automatically copying selected text to the clipboard. With Auto Copy the only problem I still have is pasting by middle button. Follow up: somehow the problem solved itself. After removing Auto Copy firefox works as I expect it to (as any X application). I can't figure out why it was not doing it before, probably I was messing too much with about:config and not restarting frequently enough.

• Access Control issue

  Ok this is stumping me mainly because of the lack of experience I have with access control. I have two folders I need to keep away from users. Payroll and Banking. I went into security and took away all the users. I made a new group called access granted and added it to both folders. I then gave full control to the group. I then added a few days to this group. I tested with partial success. I can only get into some folders and subfolders/files. I made sure I clicked on the option for all subfolders. This is my layout C:(folder) -- permissions granted to admin,access (full control) when I look at the problem files/folders no one has any permissions I don't even see the group or admin. what am I doing wrong.
