• mysql 5.0.23 vs 5.5 performance benefits and upgrade issues?

  I have been told that mysql 5.5 has a significant performance boost compared to 5.0 Our server handles a lot of data (around 30 million records processed per 5-10 seconds) and requires every drop of performance boost we can give. Will it be beneficial if we upgrade from 5.0.23 to mysql 5.5? Also, we have lots of database indexes setup on the tables and I've been told that sometimes the indexes become corrupt after a version upgrade and they have to be rebuilt. Is this true?

• If I can take a screen capture of a graphical anomaly, can it still be a hardware issue?

  I have a strange graphical anomaly going on my iMac right now (green and magenta boxes are appearing sporadically), I'm slowly trying to work through different possibilities but I thought I'd start with the basics: Can a graphical anomaly that I can screen capture still be a hardware issue? I know, it seems really obvious. If it's hardware, it should show up well after the operating system has had it's say. And since the operating system is (I assume) doing the screen capture, it seems like it shouldn't see the anomaly unless the problem is software in nature. But, as I've researched this problem I see a lot of people taking their computers in to service people for hardware issues and Apple then resolving said issue. To further complicate things, I also have Windows 8 installed via bootcamp, and the issues seems to be showing up there as well. Anyway, it feels like it must be a driver issue, since I assume that's what the two OSes have in common, but...I thought I'd come here for some disambiguation. In my case, yes, I can screen capture the anomaly (at least in OSX I can), so I assume it's somehow a software (or driver) issue. But I wanted to double check because the internet is being ambiguous...

• How can I login to lightdm with password for fingerprint-enabled user after 12.10 upgrade?

  Sorry for the long question. I have a laptop with ubuntu quantal 12.10, a fingerprint scanner, and a few active user accounts. When the machine boots up to lightdm, I get a prompt toenter my password or scan my finger print. Every now and then, fingerprint scanning just doesn't seem to work. Before the 12.10 upgrade, I was always able to enter my password for this user when fingerprint failed. Now, no matter what, I have to scan my prints to login as this user. If I try to login as a different user (fingerprint is not enabled for any others), I can see the password is typed out -- asterisks show in the password input box as I type them -- and get in. Not so for the fingerprint user. Any clues on how to figure out what's gone wrong?

  I'm using Ubuntu 9.1 server edition, I get this error during boot time after I ran sudo apt-get upgrade when checking my kernel version, uname -r returns 2.6.31-14-generic but when i run dpkg -l 'linux-image*' | grep ^.i I cannot find 2.6.31-14 (only contains 2.6.32*) Following the solution in the thread: Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) doesn't work for me I'm running the commands inside the Rescue mode by booting from the Ubuntu 9.1 Installation Disc Do I need to update my kernel and run update-initramfs + update-grub again? If so, how can I update the kernel? apt-get install any linux-headers/image cannot change the uname -r value Thanks!

• How can I upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 to 11.10?

  We need to program in CUDA 5.0 which can be installed only on ubuntu 11.10 or 12.04. Our current version, 9.10, is no longer supported, so we chose to proceed with a clean installation. Since we have a shared workstation, we used clonezilla for cloning the system. However, booting from the LiveCD showed an unexpected error. We also tried to install 11.10 in an external HDD by partitioning it, but Gparted could not be installed, and terminated with the error "installArchives() failed" which we couldn't solve even after modifying the sources.list. Is there a way to proceed with this upgrade?

• After upgrade my webcam mic records fast, high pitched, and squeaky only in Skype (maybe Sound Recorder problem too)

  After an upgrade to 11.10 which probably also updated Skype to 2.2.35 (not sure because I never checked the version before) the sound that comes back from an echo test is very high pitched and squeaky. I'm not sure if when in a call if the other person can't hear or just doesn't know what they are hearing. I am using a USB Logitech C250 Audacity records fine, gmail video chat works fine, but if I start sound recorder I get a "Could not negotiate format", followed by "Could not get/set settings from/on resource". I don't know if this is a Skype problem or a wider Pulse problem. My only real needs are the gmail and Audacity, though I have a couple of contacts that I can only Skype with.

• How do I upgrade PHP on CentOS and Kloxo?

  I need to upgrade PHP so that I can upgrade joomla on my dedicated server. I have: kloxo 6.1.6 php-5.2.17-1 Linux CentOS-55-64-minimal 2.6.18-194.32.1.el5 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I searched everywhere and I could only find that PHP 5.3 isn't compatible with zend. I would like to upgrade to 5.2.4, which is the minimum for joomla 1.6 and 1.7. I tried to run: yum update php.x86_64 Which is the PHP package installed, but it didn't work. This is a production server with quite a few users across many sites, so I wanted to do it as safely as possible. Is it safe to run "yum update"? It showed me 6 packages to install and 125 packages to update, including a kernel. Is that safe? I haven't touched kloxo's yum repositories. Update: I just successfully ran "yum update". Now I think I need to know how to add a new repository that has the 5.2.4 and how to update to that specific version. Any ideas?

• Upgrading from TFS 2010 RC to TFS 2010 RTM done

  Today is the big day, with the Launch of Visual Studio 2010 already done in Asia, and rolling around the world towards us, we are getting ready for the RTM (Released). We have had TFS 2010 in Production for nearly 6 months and have had only minimal problems. Update 12th April 2010  – Added Scott Hanselman’s tweet about the MSDN download release time. SSW was the first company in the world outside of Microsoft to deploy Visual Studio 2010 Team Foundation Server to production, not once, but twice. I am hoping to make it 3 in a row, but with all the hype around the new version, and with it being a production release and not just a go-live, I think there will be a lot of competition. Developers: MSDN will be updated with #vs2010 downloads and details at 10am PST *today*! @shanselman - Scott Hanselman Same as before, we need to Uninstall 2010 RC and install 2010 RTM. The installer will take care of all the complexity of actually upgrading any schema changes. If you are upgrading from TFS 2008 to TFS2010 you can follow our Rules To Better TFS 2010 Migration and read my post on our successes.   We run TFS 2010 in a Hyper-V virtual environment, so we have the advantage of running a snapshot as well as taking a DB backup. Done - Snapshot the hyper-v server Microsoft does not support taking a snapshot of a running server, for very good reason, and Brian Harry wrote a post after my last upgrade with the reason why you should never snapshot a running server. Done - Uninstall Visual Studio Team Explorer 2010 RC You will need to uninstall all of the Visual Studio 2010 RC client bits that you have on the server. Done - Uninstall TFS 2010 RC Done - Install TFS 2010 RTM Done - Configure TFS 2010 RTM Pick the Upgrade option and point it at your existing “tfs_Configuration” database to load all of the existing settings Done - Upgrade the SharePoint Extensions Upgrade Build Servers (Pending) Test the server The back out plan, and you should always have one, is to restore the snapshot. Upgrading to Team Foundation Server 2010 – Done The first thing you need to do is off the TFS server and then log into the Hyper-v server and create a snapshot. Figure: Make sure you turn the server off and delete all old snapshots before you take a new one I noticed that the snapshot that was taken before the Beta 2 to RC upgrade was still there. You should really delete old snapshots before you create a new one, but in this case the SysAdmin (who is currently tucked up in bed) asked me not to. I guess he is worried about a developer messing up his server Turn your server on and wait for it to boot in anticipation of all the nice shiny RTM’ness that is coming next. The upgrade procedure for TFS2010 is to uninstal the old version and install the new one. Figure: Remove Visual Studio 2010 Team Foundation Server RC from the system.   Figure: Most of the heavy lifting is done by the Uninstaller, but make sure you have removed any of the client bits first. Specifically Visual Studio 2010 or Team Explorer 2010.  Once the uninstall is complete, this took around 5 minutes for me, you can begin the install of the RTM. Running the 64 bit OS will allow the application to use more than 2GB RAM, which while not common may be of use in heavy load situations. Figure: It is always recommended to install the 64bit version of a server application where possible. I do not think it is likely, with SharePoint 2010 and Exchange 2010  and even Windows Server 2008 R2 being 64 bit only, I do not think there will be another release of a server app that is 32bit. You then need to choose what it is you want to install. This depends on how you are running TFS and on how many servers. In our case we run TFS and the Team Foundation Build Service (controller only) on out TFS server along with Analysis services and Reporting Services. But our SharePoint server lives elsewhere. Figure: This always confuses people, but in reality it makes sense. Don’t install what you do not need. Every extra you install has an impact of performance. If you are integrating with SharePoint you will need to run this install on every Front end server in your farm and don’t forget to upgrade your Build servers and proxy servers later. Figure: Selecting only Team Foundation Server (TFS) and Team Foundation Build Services (TFBS)   It is worth noting that if you have a lot of builds kicking off, and hence a lot of get operations against your TFS server, you can use a proxy server to cache the source control on another server in between your TFS server and your build servers. Figure: Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 4 takes the most time. Figure: Now run Windows Update, and SSW Diagnostic to make sure all your bits and bobs are up to date. Note: SSW Diagnostic will check your Power Tools, Add-on’s, Check in Policies and other bits as well. Configure Team Foundation Server 2010 – Done Now you can configure the server. If you have no key you will need to pick “Install a Trial Licence”, but it is only £500, or free with a MSDN subscription. Anyway, if you pick Trial you get 90 days to get your key. Figure: You can pick trial and add your key later using the TFS Server Admin. Here is where the real choices happen. We are doing an Upgrade from a previous version, so I will pick Upgrade the same as all you folks that are using the RC or TFS 2008. Figure: The upgrade wizard takes your existing 2010 or 2008 databases and upgraded them to the release.   Once you have entered your database server name you can click “List available databases” and it will show what it can upgrade. Figure: Select your database from the list and at this point, make sure you have a valid backup. At this point you have not made ANY changes to the databases. At this point the configuration wizard will load configuration from your existing database if you have one. If you are upgrading TFS 2008 refer to Rules To Better TFS 2010 Migration. Mostly during the wizard the default values will suffice, but depending on the configuration you want you can pick different options. Figure: Set the application tier account and Authentication method to use. We use NTLM to keep things simple as we host our TFS server externally for our remote developers.  Figure: Setting your TFS server URL’s to be the remote URL’s allows the reports to be accessed without using VPN. Very handy for those remote developers. Figure: Detected the existing Warehouse no problem. Figure: Again we love green ticks. It gives us a warm fuzzy feeling. Figure: The username for connecting to Reporting services should be a domain account (if you are on a domain that is). Figure: Setup the SharePoint integration to connect to your external SharePoint server. You can take the option to connect later.   You then need to run all of your readiness checks. These check can save your life! it will check all of the settings that you have entered as well as checking all the external services are configures and running properly. There are two reasons that TFS 2010 is so easy and painless to install where previous version were not. Microsoft changes the install to two steps, Install and configuration. The second reason is that they have pulled out all of the stops in making the install run all the checks necessary to make sure that once you start the install that it will complete. if you find any errors I recommend that you report them on http://connect.microsoft.com so everyone can benefit from your misery.   Figure: Now we have everything setup the configuration wizard can do its work.  Figure: Took a while on the “Web site” stage for some point, but zipped though after that.  Figure: last wee bit. • How can I troubleshoot a "Hardware Malfunction" blue screen?

  My computer has suddenly started crashing to a blue screen with the following text: hardware malfunction call your hardware vendor for support *the system has halted* The crash occurs randomly during normal use. I have thus far always been able to reproduce it by transferring the contents of a large folder... But I'm not sure if this is caused by the file transfer, or simply because the transfer takes long enough for something else to trigger it. A bit about my hardware I have an dual core Intel CPU, and Asus motherboard. Video card is by nVidia, and connects via PCIe. My hard drives are in pairs, and connect via SATA to a RAID controller on the motherboard. They are configured to use a RAID0 configuration. What I've tried so far There is nothing in the Windows Event Log. WhoCrashed was unable to find any crash records. ScanDisk runs to completion (it launches prior to Windows load) and reports no errors. MemTest reports no errors (to 200% coverage). System temperatures are in the range of 40 to 50 degrees Celsius, with video card temperatures in the range of 60 to eighty degrees Celsius. I have stripped the system down to a minimal configuration (hard drive, video card, one memory module, motherboard, CPU, power supply). The problem still occurrs. However, this has allowed me to rule out a few components: It is not the video card because the problem still occurred after replacing the video card another one I had on hand. It is not the hard drive or anything software related because the problem occurred after a fresh installation of Windows on a replacement hard drive. It is not the hard drive cables because I replaced those with new ones and still had the problem. It is not the power supply because the problem still occurred after replacing the power supply with another one I had on hand. It is probably not the memory because I've tried three different memory modules in three different memory slots and was still able to replicate the issue. Is there anything I can do to confirm what's causing the issue? At the moment it seems as though it must be either the motherboard or CPU, but those are both difficult components to replace... In addition, both components are relatively new (two to three years old). I will gladly edit in any additional information I can get my hands on, and/or focus the question as I can find more details...

• What are the minimum hardware requirements for the latest version of Android Jelly Bean OS?

  I searched around, and there's no information that points exactly to the suggested, minimum, or otherwise dated information containing specifications on this. I want to install a newer version of Android on an older ZTE-X500 MetroPCS smartphone. However, I'd like to know the backwards compatibility in regards to using a newer featured OS with lackluster, limited hardware compared to today's smartphones, such as Galaxy S4. However, I still wish to do this. If Jelly Bean is too demanding, I will set up Honeycomb, or get a modified Honey Comb ROM, or tweak the source to my preferences. However, nothing outlines the specifics of the "system requirements" it suggests for optimum performance, such as RAM, processor speed, processor features, and/or any other features, like DMA, video circuit advancements, and/or sound and special hardware requirements noted as well. Please, if you will, point me to a source that mentions this, and please tell do not link me to any PDF file formats. Thank you. PS: I'm a computer programmer.

• Why is windows 7 marking all my extra RAM as "hardware reserved"?

  I have a new HP Z800 Workstation, running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. The machine has 4GB of RAM -- windows reported 1.99GB available, 2GB was "hardware reserved". I added another 2 GB and windows reports that there is 6GB of physical RAM, but now 4GB is "hardware reserved". The BIOS sees the full RAM amount as well. The video card is an nVida Quadro FX 580, so it shouldn't be using any shared memory at all. whats going on? Z800 Specs are here.

What I need is that the server will not be able to start as long as the required password is not provided (the encryption key) I will give the best answer to Miles, though the answer was not exactly to my question. But from all the comments, it seems that it cannot be done hardware or .. it cannot be done as I would like to.

• Can a power failure or forceful shutdown damage hardware?

  Can computer hardware suffer damage from forceful shutdowns (holding the power button for five (5) seconds) or power failures? I believe that normal PC hardware does not suffer from this - after all, it's not much different than what they experience under a standard shutdown. But elsewhere I've read tht another person thought that it could do physical harm to the hard drive and possibly other components as well. He also said that the journaling features of filesystems are useless in face of power failures and were intended to help mitigate damage from system crashes. I think this is nonsense, but then again I lack the experience and knowledge to say it with certainty.

• Why are my hardware tabs disabled for my VMWare player image?

  I just installed a Ubuntu 10.10 image on VMWare player and after I finished installing I was messing with the hardware settings and I did the following: 1. disabled the floppy device 2. changed the CDRom to "use system cdrom" 3. tried to enable the VMWare tools but it complained that the vm was in "Easy Install" mode After I fiddled with the VM now my floppy and 2 CD rom devices as well as sound card and USB settings are all disabled in the VM hardware settings. Any idea on why this occurred and how to fix it?

  We support an enterprise application running on Windows Server 2008 R2. One of our customers has chosen to install to VMWare, and what I'm finding is that the VM's are relatively slow compared to hardware. Our product development team has advised that many VMs appear to run particularly slow on I/O benchmarks, which impact performance in production. I've tried the AttoSoft I/O benchmark and find that for smaller I/O blocks (1-32K) the VM I'm looking at is 25x slower than hardware and for larger I/O blocks (1-8MB) it's 10x slower. Is this a fair benchmark? If not, any suggestions for a fair test?

• Recent 12.04 Upgrade Makes My System and Internet Run Extremely SLOW!

  I'm running a Dell Inspiron 1564 with Windows7/Ubuntu dual booting. I haven't logged into the Ubuntu OS partition for some time until recently (trying to force myself into a Linux environment to learn) and when I did, It asked me to upgrade to 12.04 and so I did, restarted and since, everything seems to run extremely slow (startup, opening applications, running applications, switching windows, etc., etc... Another thing is that the Internet cuts out intermittently on my browser. Some pages within my Firefox tabs I can access, some I cant. Almost always while running Skype or some other Internet using application. So I know that I'm getting Internet, I can chat with friends over Skype but certain pages wont load during my Skype calls; the pages just hang upon resfreshing... I can eventually get the page to load after an indefinite amount of waiting and refreshing but this is very annoying. I am extremely new to Linux so I apologize in advance for my absolute ignorance. I am willing to post whatever information you Linux gurus have me type into the terminal in hopes that you can help me =) Thanks in advance!

  Has anyone out there created a version of GDI32.dll that takes advantage of hardware acceleration available on the machine? gdiplus.dll? Starting with Windows Vista, GDI is no longer hardware accelerated. (GDI+ was never hardware accelerated). Without Microsoft fixing GDI (and GDI+) to be able to run well on the computer: native applications (C++ MFC, Delphi, etc), and managed WinForms applications, will continue to run poorly forever. While i could use Direct2D for business applications, i cannot control the fact that the development environment still creates controls, with decades of library support code, that assumes the presence of GDI.
