• Can a PL/pgSQL function contain a dynamic subquery?

  I am writing a PL/pgSQL function. The function has input parameters which specify (indirectly), which tables to read filtering information from. The function embeds business logic which allows it to select data from different tables based on the input arguments. The function dynamically builds a subquery which returns filtering data which is then used to run the main query. My questions are: Is it 'legal' to use a dynamic subquery in a PL/pgSQL function. I cant see why not - but this question is related to the next one. AFAIK, PL/pgSQL are cached or precompiled by the query engine. How does having a function that generates dynamic subqueries impact the work of the query engine?

• How do I force Eclipse to rebuild if files in another project change (any change)?

  I've got an Eclipse (Galileo) project (called ProguardBuilder) that runs Proguard over a set of class files in other projects and produces a jar file. I'd like to have the ProguardBuilder project get rebuilt any time any class file in the other projects changes. AutoBuild doesn't do that; presumably it's smart enough to recognize and ignore any changes that don't affect anything externally visible. My problem is that I don't care whether or not the change is visible, since I need to completely rebuild ProguardBuilder any time the class files it depends on change at all. How do I tell Eclipse to do this sort of rebuild?

• What is the recommended toolchain for formatting XML DocBook?

  I've seen Best tools for working with DocBook XML documents, but my question is slightly different. Which is the currently recommended formatting toolchain - as opposed to editing tool - for XML DocBook? In Eric Raymond's 'The Art of Unix Programming' from 2003 (an excellent book!), the suggestion is XML-FO (XML Formatting Objects), but I've since seen suggestions here that indicated that XML-FO is no longer under development (though I can no longer find that question on StackOverflow, so maybe it was erroneous). Assume I'm primarily interested in Unix/Linux (including MacOS X), but I wouldn't automatically ignore Windows-only solutions. Is Apache's FOP the best way to go? Are there any alternatives?

  I'm using IBM WebSphere as my servlet container. My application has several servlets and Java classes. My intent is to call one of those servlets directly from a Java class. Doing some research I figured out that is possible to use the RequestDispatcher interface to achieve this. But it is necessary to pass the objects ServletRequest and ServletResponse as arguments to the method forward(). There is some way to bypass this safely and "nicely"? By "nicely" I meant to say preserving good programming and design patterns.

  I'd like to write a python function that has a dynamically created docstring. In essence for a function func() I want func.__doc__ to be a descriptor that calls a custom __get__ function create the docstring on request. Then help(func) should return the dynamically generated docstring. The context here is to write a python package wrapping a large number of command line tools in an existing analysis package. Each tool becomes a similarly named module function (created via function factory and inserted into the module namespace), with the function documentation and interface arguments dynamically generated via the analysis package.

  Objective: I have a list of header files (about 50 of them), And each header-file has few arrays with constant elements. I need to write a program to count the elements of the array. And create some other form of output (which will be used by the hardware group). My solution: I included all the 50 odd files and wrote an application. And then I dumped all the elements of the array into the specified format. My environment: Visual Studio V6, Windows XP My problem: Each time there is a new set of Header files, I am now changing the VC++ project settings to point to the new set of header files, and then rebuild. My question: A bit in-sane though, Is there any way to mention the header from some command line arguments or something? I just want to avoid re-compiling the source every time...

For work I'm dealing with a large database (160 million + rows a year, 10 years of data) and have a quandary; A large percentage of the data we upload is null data and I'd like to stop it from being uploaded. The data in question is spatial in nature, so I have one table like so: idLocations (Auto-increment int, PK) X (float) Y (foat) Alwaysignore (Bool) Which is used as a reference in a second table like so: idLocations (Int, PK, "FK") idDates (Int, PK, "FK") DATA1 (float) DATA2 (float) ... DATA7 (float) So, Ideally I'd like to find a method where I can do something like: INSERT INTO tblData(idLocations, idDates, DATA1, ..., DATA7) VALUES (...), ..., (...) WHERE VALUES(idLocations) NOT LIKE (SELECT FROM tblLocation WHERE alwaysignore=TRUE ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE DATA1=VALUES(DATA1) So, for my large batch of input data (250 values in a block), ignore the inserts where the idLocations matches an idLocations values flagged with alwaysignore.   My views extend a base view class ive made: public class BaseView : ViewPage At the moment im calling ObjectFactory.GetInstance inside this class' constructor to get some interface implementations but id like to use structuremap to inject them as constructor arguments. Im using a structuremapcontrollerfactory to create my controllers, but how can i do the same for views? I know i can implement a custom ViewEngine, but using reflector to look at the mvc default viewengine and its dependencies, it seems to go on and on and i'd rather not have to re-implement stuff thats already there. Has anyone got a cunning idea how to solve this? I know i could make things easier with setter instead of constructor injection but id rather avoid that if possible.

• Creating multiple log files of different content with log4j

  Is there a way to configure log4j so that it outputs different levels of logging to different appenders? I'm trying to set up multiple log files. The main log file would catch all INFO and above messages for all classes. (In development, it would catch all DEBUG and above messages, and TRACE for specific classes.) Then, I would like to have a separate log file. That log file would catch all DEBUG messages for a specific subset of classes, and ignore all messages for any other class. I know about SetMaxResults() and SetFirstResult(), but because of the left join and DistinctRootEntity, that could return less than x Orders. I tried "select distinct o" as well, but the sql that is generated for that (using the sqlserver 2008 dialect) seems to ignore the distinct for pages after the first one (I think this is the problem). What is the best way to accomplish this?

  Hey, I don't know much about SEO and how web spiders work, so forgive my ignorance here. I'm creating a site (using ASP.NET-MVC) which has areas that displays information retrieved from the database. The data is unique to the user, so there's no real server-side output caching going on. However, since the data can contain things the user may not wish to have displayed from search engine results, I'd like to prevent any spiders from accessing the search results page. Are there any special actions I should take to ensure that the search result directory isn't crawled? Also, would a spider even crawl a page that's dynamically generated and would any actions preventing certain directories being search mess up my search engine rankings? edit: I should add, I'm reading up on robots.txt protocol, but it relies on co-operation from the web crawler. However, I'd also like to prevent any data-mining users who will ignore the robots.txt file. I appreciate any help!

  I've noticed that my GLSL shaders are not compilable when the GLSL version is lower than 130. What are the most critical elements for having a backward compatible shader source? I don't want to have a full backward compatibility, but I'd like to understand the main guidelines for having simple (forward compatible) shaders running on GPU with GLSL lower than 130. Of course the problem could be solved with the preprocessor #if __VERSION__ < 130 #define VERTEX_IN attribute #else #define VERTER_IN in #endif But there probably many issues that I ignore. • Create Custom Builds of an Xcode Project

  I am going to build a Mac application written in Obj-C with Xcode. For argument's sake let's say it will have 10 optional features. I need a way to enable or disable those features to create custom builds of the application. These builds would be automated (most likely through the Mac OS X Terminal) so I would need a way to state which of these features are enabled/disabled at build time (a configuration file or CLI arguments would be ideal.) So what is the best way to accomplish this? I'm trying to plan this out before I start coding so that there is proper separation in my code base to allow for these features to come and go. Ideally the custom build would only contain compiled code for the features it should have. In other words I don't want to always compile all the features and condition them out at runtime.

  Well, I've started with iPod/iPhone programming using Head First iPhone Development (O'reilly) and I'm typing code out of the book. There are two problems, one is programming related and the other is not. I don't understand the format of objective-c methods. I'm getting an few errors now, based on source code from the book. Which leads me to my next issue. Some of the code is buggy. I think so because I couldn't get the code to run without modifying it. The book has some typos in the text since it's a first edition and whatnot, but could my "fixing" the code have to do with it? So... Where can I learn more about objective-c methods and how they work in terms of structure and where the return type and arguments go? For those with the book, I'm in the middle of the InstaTweet app towards the beginning. Thanks.

• Does C# have an equivalent to Scala's structural typing?

  In Scala, I can define structural types as follows: type Pressable { def press(): Unit } This means that I can define a function or method which takes as an argument something that is Pressable, like this: def foo(i: Pressable) { // etc. The object which I pass to this function must have defined for it a method called press() that matches the type signature defined in the type - takes no arguments, returns Unit (Scala's version of void). I can even use the structural type inline: def foo(i: { def press(): Unit }) { // etc. It basically allows the programmer to have all the benefits of duck typing while still having the benefit of compile-time type checking. Does C# have something similar? I've Googled but can't find anything, but I'm not familiar with C# in any depth. If there aren't, are there any plans to add this?

• Elmah on MVC website with WordPress/php sub directory

  I have created a website using ASP.NET MVC and use ELMAH for error handling, this works perfectly. After setting up a virtual directory on my website under /blog and adding the necessary WordPress php files and mysql db, I get the below error come up. Could not load file or assembly 'Elmah' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. I think this has something to do with the fact that ELMAH is applying itself to all sub-directories. Is there a way that I can tell ELMAH to ignore everything under /blog? Or is there a way to get around this? Thanks in advance.

• How can HTML5 "replace" Flash?

  A topic of debate that's seen a resurgence since the unveiling of the iPad is the issue of Flash versus HTML5. There are those that suggest that HTML5 will one day supplant/replace Adobe Flash. I do not develop software that runs in a browser, so my (limited) understanding is: HTML is a pure-text markup language that is delivered over HTTP to a client browser. The client browser interprets the markup and renders (with varying degrees of success) the page according to an standard specification. Adobe Flash is a propriety framework for working with audio, video, sound and raster/vector graphics. It requires special authoring tools (a compiler perhaps?) and a custom player that's available as a plug-in to most common browsers. Could someone please explain (to this C/C++ developer) how it is possible from a technical/coding point-of-view that a text-based markup language (HTML5) could be considered a replacement to a multimedia framework (Flash)? Please no opinionated arguments - just technical facts.
