  • Very simple python functions takes spends long time in function and not subfunctions

    I have spent many hours trying to figure what is going on here. The function 'grad_logp' in the code below is called many times in my program, and cProfile and runsnakerun the visualize the results reveals that the function grad_logp spends about .00004s 'locally' every call not in any functions it calls and the function 'n' spends about .00006s locally every call. Together these two times make up about 30% of program time that I care about. It doesn't seem like this is function overhead as other python functions spend far less time 'locally' and merging 'grad_logp' and 'n' does not make my program faster, but the operations that these two functions do seem rather trivial. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be happening? Have I done something obviously inefficient?   • Should I move client to Lamp or develop on Wamp?

    I have never developed for WAMP, the hosting guy for my new client says they are using Windows servers, they can setup PHP and MySQL for me, but they cannot switch to a *nix server. He said there are some nuances from PHP on *nix Vs. win. So my question is, if I have never programmed PHP on win, should I go through the hassle of switching hosts (since they cannot do *nix themselves), or are the differences slight enough that it shouldn't be too big a problem for me? (side note: the state of the clients website has no effect since it is a static all-flash site and is going to be completely rebuilt) Thanks!

    Currently I have this: function parse_string($string, $variables){ extract($variables); return eval('return "'. addcslashes($string, '"') .'";'); } So I can input this string: 'Hi {$name}, my name is {$own_name}' Together with this array: array('name' => 'John', 'own_name' => 'Tom') And get this back: 'Hi John, my name is Tom'   I've never liked this eval() approach but it works and it's fast (faster than regex at least). Question: Is there a more elegant way to do this (faster than using regex) in PHP5?

  • Checking deployed port in ruby on rails application

    Is there an elegant way to check which port you deployed a ruby on rails application using mongrel? I could not find a directive (i.e. such as #{RAILS_ROOT} which contains the root directory of the application) that I can use to perform a check. I need this to do a check since I am deploying the same application on different ports and I need the app to do different things according to the port that is being accessed.     I know generics are in C# to fulfill a role similar to C++ templates but I really need a way to generate some code at compile time - in this particular situation it would be very easy to solve the problem with C++ templates. Does anyone know of any alternatives? Perhaps a VS plug-in that preprocesses the code or something like that? It doesn't need to be very sophisticated, I just need to generate some methods at compile time.

  • Write a dll that is accessable from VS 2003 VC++ code

    I need to be able to write a DLL in either C# or VC++ that is accessible from code that is written in Visual Studio 2003 VC++. It looks like the code is unmanaged (uses * for pointers) VC++ and this DLL needs to be able to drop right in and be accessed by the current code. The DLL is an RS232 driver that needs to be able to return an int for an error code and pass back, by reference, some measured values, to the calling program. Will I even be able to write this in C#? If not, I only have access to Visual Studio 2005 or 2008. Will I be able to write my code in either, and will that DLL be able to be called from the current code base? Or do I have to go looking on ebay for a copy of VS 2003?

  • Django Show M2M field in both model forms

    Hi I am using the forms.ModelForm to create my form. I want to be able to show the manytomany field in both model forms, how do I do this? If the manytomany relationship is defined in the model it is fine and just appears but if it is not in the model (but is still linked via the other model) it does not appear. Hope this makes sense.   • MySQL - Calculate the net time difference between two date-times while excluding breaks?

    In a MySQL query I am using the timediff/time_to_sec functions to calculate the total minutes between two date-times. For example: 2010-03-23 10:00:00 - 2010-03-23 08:00:00 = 120 minutes What I would like to do is exclude any breaks that occur during the selected time range. For example: 2010-03-23 10:00:00 - 2010-03-23 08:00:00 - (break 08:55:00 to 09:10:00) = 105 minutes Is there a good method to do this without resorting to a long list of nested IF statements?

Like I say there are lots of other things not shown, so suggestions for major design changes on this example are probably not that helpful... though any general suggestions/advice are welcome.
