• Friday Fun - Conference Videos from JavaZone & others

  Trailers or promotion videos can be very effective when done right and the Java community has been pretty good at it IMO. The latest ones are short teasers coming from the JavaBin folks to promote their very fine JavaZone conference in Oslo, Norway in September (celebrating their 10th anniversary). Update: the entire trailer is now available. Previous videos include Lady java and Java 4 Ever (must see if you somehow missed them). The inspiration for these may have come from the JavaPolis (now Devoxx) 2006 "There are better ways to meet your idols" trailer. IIRC, James Gosling was quoted saying "This is sick, I love it!". Your mileage may vary ;) Sun Microsystems also used to make some "promotion" videos. Here's a selection.

• wired connection not being recognised in ubuntu 10.04 lts

  I have windows7 installed on my C drive and ubuntu 10.04 lts on my D drive. When I plud the lan cable (ethernet cable) onto the ethernet card of my laptop, windows7 identifies the network correctly without the need for any manual settings and connects me to the network correctly. Unfortunately, in ubuntu, even after plugging in the cable, nothing happens (on the network side). It is only scanning for wireless networks it seems, and doesnt bother about the wired networks. I tried adding a new wired connection and manually entered the physical address which was displayed when i connected to the network using windows. i entered the phy address, and told it to use auto dhcp and saved the dialog bog in ubuntu network connection. Still there is no change, and ubuntu doesnt seem to recognise anything. please let me know how to work with wired connections using ubuntu, and why my wired cable is not being recognized in ubuntu. thanks. PS: I am pretty new to ubuntu/ linux :)

• joomla sometimes messes up urls, probably cache involved

  Is a bit i'm having this problem and i really cannot get the hang of it... Every once in while my joomla site messes up links url and for example from something like this: http://www.sism.org/index.php?option=com_comprofiler&task=userslist&listid=4&Itemid=123 it becomes like this: http://www.sism.org/index.php/component/k2/administrator/components/com_dump/assets/css/images/stories/inrilievo/sism/htm/index.php?option=com_comprofiler&task=userslist&listid=4&Itemid=123 the new page has the right content but there are no css and other linked resources. Usually i solve the problem by deleting all the cache and turning it off and on again. Of course this is pretty annoying especially for my association. Does any one have any clue on this? Watching the URLs the components involved seems to be K2 and Jdump. Thanks

• Is programming for me?

  I have an IT background and was pretty confident until an opportunity came up at work to go into programming(C#). I have never programmed before this. Plus the software I am programming for is a program I have never used before(a 3D modeling software). It has been 6 months..I feel like giving up. Not much training...about 3 weeks of training spread out over the last 6 months. I think I would be good at programming but this experience has kinda making me rethink my decision. Is it me or am I right to be frustrated?

• Earning extra cash as a programmer

  I work as fulltime programmer and have a pretty well paid job for the country where I live, but I could do with a bit of extra cash at the moment (wife nagging about new kitchen etc.). I'd be interested in taking on small projects in my spare time. I'm not interested in writing malware or get rich quick schemes. I've checked out a few sites programmer freelance sites, but the projects all see to be very poorly paid or people that want malware creating (or both). Are there any good freelancing sites that I may have missed? Are there any other ways to find small freelance projects?

• How should I store a Game Database on Android?

  I'm looking at creating a game for Android and while I have most of the ins and outs worked out, the one thing I'm struggling with is how to store data for the game. Ultimately, the game will be based off of a lot of pre-defined data and statistics so the obvious choice to me would be something like SQLite, but as I'm pretty new to the realm of Android and Game Development, I'm not 100% certain if this is the right route to follow. The data will be general pre-defined data as well as player data (along the lines of careers stats - what place finished, etc). I was wondering if there was a better/best practice solution that wasn't SQLite and that would provide said functionality and if so, could you point me in the right direction?

• Grub errors during UEFI dual boot for Windows 8 (can't find command 'drivemap')

  I have got a newly bought ASUS N56V with Windows 8 preinstalled. I needed to install Ubuntu so i partitioned the disk and after having disabled the Secure Boot option from Windows 8 i successfully installed Ubuntu 12.10 from a Live USB. The problem is that if i try to access both to Windows 8 (loader) and Windows Recovery System (loader) from the GRUB menu, these two errors show: can't find command 'drivemap' and invalid EFI file path and it goes back to the grub menu. In conclusion I do not have access to my Windows 8 partition but can only use Ubuntu. How can I solve the problem? I am pretty new to the matter. Thank you!

• What is the general definition of something that can be included or excluded?

  When an application presents a user with a list of items, it's pretty common that it permits the user to filter the items. Often a 'filter' feature is implemented as a set of include or exclude rules. For example: include all emails from [email protected], and exclude those emails without attachments I've seen this include/exclude pattern often; for example Maven and Google Analytics filter things this way. But now that I'm implementing something like this myself, I don't know what to call something that could be either included or excluded. In specific terms: If I have a database table of filter rules, each of which either includes or excludes matching items, what is an appropriate name of the field that stores include or exclude? When displaying a list of filters to a user, what is a good way to label the include or exclude value? (as a bonus, can anyone recommend a good implementation of this kind of filtering for inspiration?)

• Whats a good setup/toolchain for a project?

  I was thinking, what is needed for a good setup and what are good (free) tools to use? Some of what i came up with are Bug tracking Some good (distributed:P) source control (which means no svn fellas) automated nightly builds or a continuous integration (or anything that automates builds and possibly sends emails when there are build errors) wiki to document decisions, road map or milestones. • What is the term that means "keeping the arguments for different API calls as similar as possible"?

  There is a word which I can never remember... it expresses a design goal that API calls (or functions or methods or whatever) should be as similar as reasonably possible in their argument patterns. It may also extend to naming as well. In other words, all other things being equal, it is probably bad to have these three functions: deleteUser(email) petRemove(petId,species) destroyPlanet(planetName,starName) if instead you could have deleteUser(userId) deletePet(petId) deletePlanet(planetId) What is the word for this concept? I keep thinking it's "orthogonal" but it definitely isn't. Its a very important concept, and to me it's one of the biggest things that makes some APIs a joy to work with (because once you learn a few things you can pretty much use everything without looking at doco), and others a pain (because every function is done inconsistently).

  We're trying to come up with terms that better describe our bugs/defects. To us, the term 'bug' or 'defect' is too generic and doesn't accurately reflect what is happening. For example, instead of saying that there is a bug (in the general sense), we'd rather say what type of bug (an error, or enhancement, or improvement, etc.). • Is there a media player that works on HTTPS sites?

  I'm currently using Yahoo! Media Player for a site that needs to play MP3 files that are stored on our server. In total, there's quite a bit more than the free limits at Soundcloud, but each file is only a few minutes long. YMP is pretty good, but causes security warnings on HTTPS pages, because it can only be served via HTTP. Is there an equivalent free player I can embed for the HTTPS pages? EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm initially looking for something that will scan the page and turn media links playable.

• Whats a good structure to save and retrieve locations of images?

  I got a java-ee application, where I collect informations about movies. Im my backend I provide data like the name, description, genre and a random uuid. I also got lots of related files, which are stored on a file server. Including some screenshots, the dvd or bluRay cover and video trailers. My current approach is: When saving the files to the fileserver, I retrieve the movies random uuid (which is the primary key btw.). I then rename the files screenshot_[UUID]_1, screenshot_[UUID]_2 ... etc. Now, there are lots of other ways to handle this, like saving all filenames in a database or creating a dir structure on the fileserver for every uuid and, e.g., return all images in the "[uuid]/screenshots" folder via REST. I expect about 30k requests a day, so the service has to be pretty performant. Whats the best way to solve this?

• Gnome extensions don't work! I've tried everything!

  When I go to https://extensions.gnome.org/, and try to install an extension, it clicks on, but nothing happens to my shell. Then, when I reload the page, the slider has turned off. Here are the things I have tried: I tried Chrome, Firefox, and Opera adding http://extensions.gnome.org to my allow plugin list in google chrome and made sure gnome-intigration is enabled I made a new firefox profile and tried installing it I reset my gnome shell settings (How do I reset GNOME to the defaults?) - this link actually broke my system, as now I can't log in to any desktop environment, the only way I can get to Unity, is by logging in to another desktop environment like cinnimon (which doesn't work) , then immediately logging into unity. Whenever I try to just log into unity or pretty much any other desktop environment, it logs in, but then seems to crash, and log out. Sometimes I even get quick glances of the Unity bar before it crashes I tried-re installing gnome None of these methods worked!! Thank you in advance!!

  I have been given a huge task of migrating few functionalities from jQuery to AngularJS. I have been pretty good at Angular by now. But I want to dive deep and create futuristic, sound architecture. BAs are seating on my neck, wanting to get my tasks as quickly as possible. I prefer doing something once and right vs keeping on patching existing functionalities. And with this attitude, I always keep working more than necessary. Am I missing something? I think i want to convert to a free app now, and allow full upgrade via in-app-purchase.   Hi, We have a domain with URL, lets say: http://www.xxxxstaging.com/abc.php?id=10 which is having a pretty good ranking for some keywords in google. However, this is our staging website and due to some historical reason, it was exposed to public. Now we have a production domain (the one we want to be publicly available), say: http://www.xxxxproduction.com/abc.php?id=10 which have exactly the same html output as xxxxstaging.com our question is, for the exactly same keyword search, it never appear in any page of google. Is it possible for us to "switch" the ranking in google, either tell the robot that they are indeed the same website, or tell google to change it for us? Thank you.

  I would like to write some rules for a game I have in head but I don't know how to do that. So are there some methodologies or modeling tools (like UML) to do that? I'm thinking about a kind of tree of competencies or some kind of map to be sure that the game is well balanced.   Tried installing i3wm from these instructions using the Ubuntu ppa http://i3wm.org/docs/repositories.html Got this error when I typed in the final command apt-get install i3 sudo apt-get install i3 Reading package lists... • Why does Linux/Ubuntu have an unorganised install solution?

  I started using Windows 7 again to play some of my games I had been missing and I have to say I've been relieved to be reintroduced to the standard installation area "Program Files". From what I've noticed on almost every Linux distribution there is like 5 different areas where games/programs or other odds and ends end up. When you install something, I feel as though you pretty much have to guess where it installed at. Which honestly don't make any sense to me. So my question is, why does it appear as though there is no standard on Linux/Ubuntu? I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I just want to understand the reasons behind it.

• My first Windows Phone 7 application is live &ndash; from zero to submitted in 5 hours

  Tuesday evening I found myself minus family. I decided to use the time to “have a crack at this Silverlight Phone 7 stuff”. From zero (no experience, no tools installed, no membership on the AppHub) to submitted for approval took me from 8pm to 1am – with the last hour messing around with png files in Paint to complete the submission process! Two days later on Thursday it was approved and is now in the marketplace for you to install - or not :-) The application is very simple but it works and looks “finished” – and importantly I learnt a lot about what is involved and the power of our tooling to make this pretty easy to get going. Go on, give it a go by popping over to the App Hub. You do need to pay $99 to join the App Hub to publish but you can start by downloading the free tools and just work with the included emulator. • Update installed on netbook.. now sidebar icons have disappeared! :oS

  hope someone can help. I am not extremely computer literate and my brother installed Ubuntu on my Acer net book when my windows crashed irretrievably . I recently (day before yesterday) had a box come up saying an update (i think it was 10 or 11 .something) i followed the instructions to download and install it and now, all my side bar icons have disappeared. I happened upon an Internet connection by chance and have no idea whatsoever how to get them back. This is quite probably a really stupid question and a really easy fix but as i said earlier, i am pretty much a novice, very far from a computer expert! Thanx in advance :o)
