  • Asking for brief explanation of reverse proxying and recommended software

    I need to set up a reverse proxy where the backend web server is serving https pages only. I've never set up a reverse proxy and would like a brief overview of how it works. One of my questions is whether the proxy needs to run https also, or does simple http suffice? Second question would be whether to use Apache, varnish, nginx, or squid. This is for an internal site for a small company, so not a lot of traffic expected. Maybe a few dozen users each day.

  • I want to "image" 40+ laptops quickly...i welcome suggestions on reliable software

    I often have batches of laptops/PC's to re-image and have tried various methods, but each of them has been problematic and often take more time to troubleshoot than it would have been to image them individually! For example, i have tried to use ghost - i installed ghostcast server on my laptop but the clients never seem to boot to LAN successfully, or it takes an hour to get everything sorted (drivers, LAN, DHCP etc etc). I want a reliable tool that makes imaging quick and easy - and i don't mind paying for it if it's going to work (but obviously free = always good!)

  • I want a non admin user to install software. What commands do I need to add to sudoers?

    I want to edit the /etc/sudoers file so that a non-admin user can install software via the Software Center in Linux Mint 10. The reason for this is that I want a user to have the capability to install programs, but not make any other configuration changes to the system. So far I have the following (some of these may not make sense, I was just trying whatever I thought of) username ALL= /usr/bin/aptitude username ALL= /usr/bin/dpkg username ALL= /usr/local/bin/apt-get username ALL= /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/mintUpdate.py username ALL= /usr/bin/software-center username ALL= /usr/bin/synaptic So far, it allows me to do updates without asking for my password, but it will not let me install software without entering an admin password. I am aware of this question, How can I set the Software Center to install software for non-root users?, but this goes the route of modifying the PolicyKit, whereas I'm interested in a sudo solution, because it seems a simpler way to go.

  • iPhone: Software Development And Distribution

    I have a few quick questions about the iPhone software development. I did some research about the topic, but there are a few specific things I would like to ask here, because I will have to estimate the cost of the required hardware and software, before I am allowed to buy anything. I never did any Mac development nor have I ever owned an iPhone, so needless to say this is quite hard for me. I will buy an iMac mini with 2 GB RAM for iPhone development. I will have to use it at the same time as my regular PC, but the majority of the time I won't use the Mac at all. Do I have to buy an additional monitor, a mouse and a keyboard or is there a better solution? I will have to port a C library to the iPhone platform and develop an iPhone application that uses the ported library. Do I need anything else than the iPhone SDK to do this? If I use an external library (see above), can I test the application with the integrated emulator, or is it recommend to buy the device? In a later phase of the project I will have to buy an iPhone, but I will have to wait until the iPhone 4 is released here in Europe, because the application requires a camera. In addition to this I will have to send data to a remote webservice. Aside from these two things I don't require any other features. Can I just buy the iPhone online from another country (the iPhones here are sim locked), or should I buy one with a contract? When the application is ready, it will be installed on a few iPhones owned by our customer. Because of security reasons it is crucial that there is no third party involved in this process (i.e. the application should not be distributed on the app store). Is this possible?

  • Recommendations on developing a WPF application without using MVVM or similar

    We were building out the next version of an in-house thick-client application using WPF/Prism (Composite Application Library). As we were nearly done with the client our team was put under new management and shortly thereafter: We were then directed to drop the Prism framework to keep things simple. This includes not using any type of Inversion of Control. We were directed to build out the WPF application without using MVVM or similar; and more along the lines of a traditional WinForm application. The idea is that if a developer sees a control in Visual Studio’s designer view, then (s)he should be able to click on the control and see exactly what it's doing without having to traverse through a view-model (or similar). We have now been tasked with building out the WPF application using one primary Window, use a Frame Control to contain the content, and use a Ribbon outside of the frame for the menu items. Reason we were provided to use Frame Control: a. We will show a view in the Frame with a Page (not a user control) and then load the page in the Frame. b. When a new view is to be shown in the Frame, the current view (Page) will be closed/disposed and the new view (Page) will take its place in the Frame. c. When a developer looks at the Page in design view, (s)he will be able to click on any control and see exactly what is being done. Given the restrictions of 1 and 2 above, we’d like to present another method of building out the application that: Can be presented as an alternative to using the “Frame Methodology” (item 3 above) but still provides the same type of functionality. Does not use MVVM (see #1 and #2 above). Provided the direction we’ve been given, any suggestions as to an alternative we can present? I’d request that the responses be kept on the professional level and thank you in advance.

    I'm looking for a template engine. Requirements: Runs on a JVM. Java is good; Jython, JRuby and the like, too... Can be used outside of servlets (unlike JSP) Is flexible wrt. to where the templates are stored (JSP and a lot of people require the templates to be stored in the FS). It should provide a template loading interface which one can implement or something like that Easy inclusion of parameterized templates- I really like JSP's tag fragments Good docs, nice code, etc., the usual suspects I've looked at JSP- it's nearly perfect except for the servlet and filesystem coupling, Stringtemplate- I love the template syntax, but it fails on the filesystem coupling, the documentation is lacking and template groups and stuff are confusing, GXP, TAL, etc. Ideas, thoughts?   • Best full text search for mysql?

    We're currently running MySQL on a LAMP stack and have been looking at implementing a more thorough, full-text search on our site. We've looked at MySQL's own freetext search, but it doesn't seem to cope well with large databases, which makes it far too slow for our needs. Our main requirements are: speed returning results simple updating of index In addition to the above, our "nice to have"s are: ideally not something that requires adding a module to MySQL plays nicely with PHP (majority of our dev work done using PHP) There seems to be quite a few healthy open-source projects to add fast, reliable full-text search to MySQL, so I'm basically looking for recommendations/suggestions on what you've found to be the most useful product out there, easiest to set up, etc. So far, the list of ones we've been starting to play around with are: Sphinx, C++ based, used by craigslist, thepiratebay Lucene, Java-based Apache project, powers zeoh.com and zoomf.com Solr, Java-based offshoot of Lucene, used to power searches on Digg, CNet & AOL Channels Are there any better ones out there that we haven't come across yet? Can you recommend / suggest against any of the options we've gathered so far? Thanks for your help! Update @Cletus suggested Google's Custom Search Engine. We recently trialled this on a couple of projects, and it's an almost-perfect fit for our needs. The problem is that entries on our site are updated quite regularly, and unfortunately the speed at which entries go in/get updated in Google's index was just too slow and erratic for us to rely on, even with the addition of sitemaps and requested crawl rate changes.

  • Face recognition Library

    I'm looking for a free face recognition library for a university project. I'm not looking for face detection. I'm looking for actual recognition. That means finding images that contain specified faces or libraries that calculate distances between specific faces. I'm using OpenCV for detecting the faces and a rough Eigenfaces Algorithm for the recognition now. But I thought there should be something out there with a better performance then a self written Eigenfaces Algorithm. I don't talk about speed as performance I'm looking for a library with better results as an simple Eigenfaces approach I took a look at faint but it seems the library is not very reusable for my own applications. I'm happy with a library in Python, Java, C++, C or something like that. The best thing would be if it can be run on a Windowsmachine

  • ACL architechture for a Software As a service in Spring 3.0

    I am making a software as a service using Spring 3.0 (Spring MVC, Spring Security, Spring Roo, Hibernate) I have to come up with a flexible access control list mechanism.I have three different kinds of users System (who can do any thing to the system, includes admin and internal daemons) Operations (who can add and delete users, organizations, and do maintenance work on behalf of users and organizations) End Users (they belong to one or more organization, for each organization, the user can have one or more roles, like being organization admin, or organization read-only member) (role like orgadmin can also add users for that organization) Now my question is, how should i model the entity of User? If I just take the End User, it can belong to one or more organizations, so each user can contain a set of references to its organizations. But how do we model the users role for each organization, So for example User UX belongs to organizations og1, og2 and og3, and for og1 he is both orgadmin, and org-read-only-user, where as for og2 he is only orgadmin and for og3 he is only org-read-only-user I have the possibility of making each user belong to one organization alone, but that's making the system bounded and I don't like that idea (although i would still satisfy the requirement) If you have a better extensible ACL architecture, please suggest it. Since its a software as a service, one would expect that alot of different organizations would be part if the same system. I had one concern that it is not a good idea to keep og1 and og2 data on the same DB (if og1 decides to spawn a 100 reports on the system, og2 should not suffer) But that is some thing advanced for now and is not directly related to ACL but to the physical distribution of data and setup of services based on those ACLs This is a community Wiki question, please correct any thing which you wish to do so.   • How do you efficiently implement a document similarity search system?

    How do you implement a "similar items" system for items described by a set of tags? In my database, I have three tables, Article, ArticleTag and Tag. Each Article is related to a number of Tags via a many-to-many relationship. For each Article i want to find the five most similar articles to implement a "if you like this article you will like these too" system. I am familiar with Cosine similarity and using that algorithm works very well. But it is way to slow. For each article, I need to iterate over all articles, calculate the cosine similarity for the article pair and then select the five articles with the highest similarity rating. With 200k articles and 30k tags, it takes me half a minute to calculate the similar articles for a single article. So I need another algorithm that produces roughly as good results as cosine similarity but that can be run in realtime and which does not require me to iterate over the whole document corpus each time. Maybe someone can suggest an off-the-shelf solution for this? Most of the search engines I looked at does not enable document similarity searching.

  • PLKs and Web Service Software Factory

    We found a bug in Web Service Software Factory a description can be found here. There has been no updates on it so we decided to download the code and fix it ourself. Very simple bug and we patched it with maybe 3 lines of code. However* we have now tried to repackage it and use it and are finding that this is seemingly an impossible process. Can someone please explain to me the process of PLKs? I have read all about them but still don't understand what is really required to distribute a VS package. I was able to get it to load and run using a PLK obtained from here, but i am assuming that you have to be a partner to get a functional PLK that will be recognized on other peoples systems? Every time i try and install this on a different computer I get a "Package Load Failure". Is the reason I am getting errors because I am not using a partner key? Is there any other way around this? For instance is there any way we can have an "internal" VS package that we can distribute? Edit Files I had to change to get it to work. First run devenv PostInstall.proj Generate your plks and replace ##Package PLK## (.resx files) --Just note that package version is not the class name but is "Web Service Software Factory: Modeling Edition" -- And you need to remove the new lines from the key ProductDefinitionRegistryFragment.wxi line 1252(update version to whatever version you used in plk) Uncomment all // [VSShell::ProvideLoadKey("Standard", Constant in .tt files.
