• Android - Temporal & Ancestral Navigation with ViewPager & Fragments

  I'm trying to work out the best way to implement the 'ancestral' and 'temporal' navigation (utilising the up button and back buttons), for a music player I'm working on. Currently, the user is presented with a viewpager, and can page between three main fragments (ArtistMain, AlbumMain and SongMain). Upon choosing an item inside that view, a fragment transaction occurs, and the viewpager goes out of view, replaced by a new fragment (AlbumSub, Songsub or player, depending on where the user came from). The user can then navigate deeper, until a song is chosen, and then they are taken to the 'player' screen. I guess the question is: How do I implement all of this conditional navigation? I'm fairly new to android and programming in general, and I just can't seem to come up with an efficient way to achieve this. At the moment, as each fragment is brought into view, the app is checking to see where the user just came from, and then determines where the user should be taken if back or home is called. This means I have a booleans like "fromArtistMain", "fromAlbumSub", and I'm checking for things like "fromSongSub && fromPlayer".. it's all turning into a bit of a mess. I've drawn a diagram (in paint, sorry!!), to depict the navigation I'm trying to achieve. The yellow represents the 'up' button press, the red is the 'back' button press, and blue is just normal navigation. The green arrows are meant to represent the view paging: Any advice is welcome. It might take something really simple that I've just overlooked. Thanks for your time.

  just wanted to hear on the different general learning paths people embark on when learning a new language/framework. the one i currently use, which is how i learned bash and am currently learning python, is: instant hacking tutorial (very short tutorial introducing the basic syntax, variable declaration, loops, data types, etc. and how they are generally used) in depth tutorial with good programming style and slightly topic-specific (e.g. Mark Pilgrim's Dive into Python), important topics for me personally are regex methods, file IO, and ways the different data types are utilized best (i wrote a very primitive bayesian spam filter using python's dictionaries to keep track of word occurrences) spaced-repition of syntax or short recipes (i use anki, with questions like 'create dictionary with filename and filesize metadata, human-readable' or simpler ones like 'match 0 - 3 occurences of the letter M in a string', or 'return/create an iterator from two sequences') the use of spaced-repitition has been invaluable, and i credit it with the ease that i can recall/create python algorithms. however, i've recently started looking into django, and i've found that spaced-repitition, at least in my case, doesn't work very well for learning a framework, it works best with short code recipes (either that or i should start looking into more basic django framework tutorials). the problem i'm encountering is that since framework programming is not only algorithms, but actually learning the API, which can be quite complex since you have to learn all the methods, modules, the places where they are stored, and the sequence of which things have to be done. for ex. in django to start a project that deals with polls (from the django tutorial), one has to create the project, edit the settings.py file, create the polls app, edit the models.py file (which requires knowing the classes that are present in the module models), edit the urls.py file, etc. i found that my spaced-repition method didn't work very well for this type of learning, so i wanted to ask you guys what method(s) you use for learning the different frameworks/APIs.

  Hi all, I tried to pass more than one value through Query String from page1.aspx to page2.aspx.   Hi, I have a document.onclick function that I would like to have a delay. I can't seem to get the syntax right. my original code is <script type="text/javascript"> document.onclick=check; function check(e){do something} I tried the below, but that code is incorrect, the function did not execute and nothing happened. <script type="text/javascript"> document.onclick=setTimeout("check", 1000); function check(e){do something} I tried the next set, the function got executed, but no delay. <script type="text/javascript"> setTimeout(document.onclick=check, 1000); function check(e){do something} what is the correct syntax for this code. TIA Edit: The solutions were all good, my problem was that I use the function check to obtain the id of the element being clicked on. But after the delay, there is no "memory" of what was being clicked on, so the rest of the function does not get executed. Jimr wrote the short code to preserve clicked event. • WriteableBitmap failing badly, pixel array very inaccurate

  I have tried, literally for hours, and I have not been able to budge this problem. I have a UserControl, that is 800x369, and it contains, simply, a path that forms a worldmap. I put this on a landscape page, then I render it into a WriteableBitmap. I then run a conversion to turn the 1d Pixels array into a 2d array of integers. Then, to check the conversion, I wire up the custom control's click command to use the Point.X and Point.Y relative to the custom control in the newly created array. My logic is thus: wb = new WriteableBitmap(worldMap, new TranslateTransform()); wb.Invalidate(); intTest = wb.Pixels.To2DArray(wb.PixelWidth); My conversion logic is as such: public static int[,] To2DArray(this int[] arr,int rowLength) { int[,] output = new int[rowLength, arr.Length / rowLength]; if (arr.Length % rowLength != 0) throw new IndexOutOfRangeException(); for (int i = 0; i < arr.Length; i++) { output[i % rowLength, i / rowLength] = arr[i]; } return output; } Now, when I do the checking, I get completely and utterly strange results: apparently all pixels are either at values of -1 or 0, and these values are completely independent of the original colours. Just for posterity: here's my checking code: private void Check(object sender, MouseButtonEventArgs e) { Point click = e.GetPosition(worldMap); ChangeNotification(intTest[(int)click.X,(int)click.Y].ToString()); } The result show absolutely no correlation to the path that the WriteableBitmap has rendered into it. The path has a fill of solid white. What the heck is going on? I've tried for hours with no luck. Please, this is the major problem stopping me from submitting my first WP7 app. Any guidance?

  What's the most simple and semantic way of presenting code snippets in HTML? Possible XHTML syntax <a href="code_sample.php" type="text/x-php"> Example of widget creation </a> Example of linked file (code_sample.php): // Create a new widget $widget = new widget(); Pros: Semantically uses title to describe the source code being referenced Up to the client to render snippet Having very many custom server-side implementations tells me it should be standardized Browsers can have plug-ins for copy+paste, download, etc Seems to me this is where it belongs (not in Javascript) Degradation: non-compliant browsers receive a link to the associated content Cons: Not semantic enough? Seems wrong to replace hyperlinks with source code for presentation <object> might be better, but wouldn't degrade as nicely. Background I'm trying to create a "personal" XHTML standard for storing notes (wow, this is probably among the nerdiest things I've said). Since notes are just "scratch" it needs to be very lightweight. SO's markdown is very lightweight but not semantic enough for my needs. Plus, now I'm just curious.   In C++ program, I am trying to #import TLB of .NET out of proc server. I am not really interested in the having the base object .NET object methods like GetType(), Equals(), etc. But GetType() seems to be causing problems. Some google research indicates I could #import MSCORLIB.TLB (or put it in path), but I can't get that to compile either. Any tips?

  Wait, I know! I know that this "syntax highlight in textarea"-question was raised like a million times on stackoverflow! But, please, listen. offtopic: I'm not a web-developer, and technically I'm not a programmer at all. I study mechatronics and deal mostly with control-engineering and digital-hardware. And I'm so pissed off that whenever I want to share some application (that would be helpful in my field) and embed it into the web, I need to know such a crazy amount of technologies, like html, css, javascript, flash, etc.. that takes time, which I could have been spending for the benefit of my own field. Right now I'm playing with hardware-description-languages and I'm writing some Python-libraries to convert one HDL into another. And I wanted to embed such feature on the web: http://xhdl2vhdl.appspot.com/ I wanted to implement some basic syntax highlighting (only keywords highlighting will be enough) so that the code could be readable. But the whole idea highlighting something in textarea is not trivial at all. The other difficulty is that the languages I work with are rare, and there are no out-of-box solutions for them. • Windows batch - loop over folder string and parse out last folder name

  Hi, I need to grab the folder name of a currently executing batch file. I have been trying to loop over the current directory using the following syntax (which is wrong at present): set mydir = %~p0 for /F "delims=\" %i IN (%mydir%) DO @echo %i Couple of issues in that I cannot seem to pass the 'mydir' variable value in as the search string. It only seems to work if I pass in commands; I have the syntax wrong and cannot work out why. My thinking was to loop over the folder string with a '\' delimiter but this is causing problems too. If I set a variable on each loop then the last value set will be the current folder name. For example, given the following path: C:\Folder1\Folder2\Folder3\Archive.bat I would expect to parse out the value 'Folder3'. I need to parse that value out as its name will be part of another folder I am going to create further down in the batch file. Many thanks if anyone can help. I may be barking up the wrong tree completely so any other approaches would be greatly received also. Tim

  Hello SO. I'm currently integrating Warden into a new Rack application I'm building. I'd like to implement a recent patch to Rack that allows me to specify how sessions are serialized; specifically, I'd like to use Rack::Session::Cookie::Identity as the session processor. • Is there a way to validates_presence_of only one time? (to skip that validation once the user's been

  So, I'd like for a user to see an error message if he submits a comment and the :name is blank (typical error message, don't need help with that). However, I'd then like to allow the user to skip that validation once he's been notified that "we like all comments to have a name." So, he submits the comment once, sees the notification, then can submit the form again unchanged if he really doesn't want to add a name, and the validates_presences_of :name is skipped. But, I'm not sure how to go about doing this. I thought about checking to see where the request is coming from, but after a create, errors are handed off to the "new" action, which is the same as actual "new" comments. I then thought about checking to see if flash[errors] were present, but that won't work because there are other validations a comment has to pass. Finally, I thought about trying a validates_presences_of :name, :unless = :notified but wasn't sure how to define notified. I honestly hate asking such an open ended question, but wasn't sure where to get started. So, is there a way to just check a certain validation once?

• How do I interact with a Perl object that has a hash attribute?

  I have a class with several variables, one of which is a hash (_runs): sub new { my ($class, $name) = @_; my $self = { _name => $name, ... _runs => (), _times => [], ... }; bless ($self, $class); return $self; } Now, all I'm trying to do is create an accessor/mutator, as well as another subroutine that pushes new data into the hash. But I'm having a hell of a time getting all the referencing/dereferencing/$self calls working together. I've about burned my eyes out with "Can't use string ("blah") as a HASH ref etc etc" errors. For the accessor, what is 'best practice' for returning hashes? Which one of these options should I be using (if any)?: return $self->{_runs}; return %{ $self->{_runs} }; return \$self->{_runs}; Further, when I'm using the hash within other subroutines in the class, what syntax do I use to copy it? my @runs = $self->{_runs}; my @runs = %{ $self->{_runs} }; my @runs = $%{ $self->{_runs} }; my @runs = $$self->{_runs}; Same goes for iterating over the keys: foreach my $dt (keys $self->{_runs}) foreach my $dt (keys %{ $self->{_runs} }) And how about actually adding the data? $self->{_runs}{$dt} = $duration; %{ $self->{_runs} }{$dt} = $duration; $$self->{_runs}{$dt} = $duration; You get the point. I've been reading articles about using classes, and articles about referencing and dereferencing, but I can't seem to get my brain to combine the knowledge and use both at the same time. I got my _times array working finally, but mimicking my array syntax over to hashes didn't work.

• Static code analysis for new language. Where to start?

  I just been given a new assignment which looks like its going to be an interesting challenge. The customer is wanting a code style checking tool to be developed for their internal (soon to be open sourced) programming language which runs on the JVM. The language syntax is very Java like. The customer basically wants me to produce something like checkstyle. So my question is this, how would you approach this problem? Given a clean slate what recommendations would you make to the customer? I think I have 3 options Write something from scratch. Id prefer not to do this as it seems like this sort of code analysis tool problem has been solved so many times that there must be a more "framework" or "platform" orientated approach. Fork an existing code style checking tool and modify the parsing to fit with this new language etc etc Extend or plug into an existing static code analysis tool. (maybe write a plugin for Yasca?) Maybe you would like to share your experiences in this area? Thanks for reading

  The file that I've got to work with here is the result of an LDAP extraction but I need to ultimately get the information formatted over to something that a spreadsheet can use. I have experience doing this in VBScript but I'm trying to switch over to using Perl for as much server administration as possible. • DRYing up Rails Views with Nested Resources

  What is your solution to the problem if you have a model that is both not-nested and nested, such as products: a "Product" can belong_to say an "Event", and a Product can also just be independent. This means I can have routes like this: map.resources :products # /products map.resources :events do |event| event.resources :products # /events/1/products end How do you handle that in your views properly? Note: this is for an admin panel. I want to be able to have a "Create Event" page, with a side panel for creating tickets (Product), forms, and checking who's rsvp'd. So you'd click on the "Event Tickets" side panel button, and it'd take you to /events/my-new-event/tickets. But there's also a root "Products" tab for the admin panel, which could list tickets and other random products. The 'tickets' and 'products' views look 90% the same, but the tickets will have some info about the event it belongs to. It seems like I'd have to have views like this: products/index.haml products/show.haml events/products/index.haml events/products/show.haml But that doesn't seem DRY. Or I could have conditionals checking to see if the product had an Event (@product.event.nil?), but then the views would be hard to understand. How do you deal with these situations? Thanks so much.

The problem is that I'd also like to be able to accurately report the current line number, if the input doesn't conform to the syntax. Long story short, I've run into a problem when I try to actually match a newline with the Scanner class. To be specific, when I try to match a newline with a pattern using the Scanner class, it fails. Almost always. But when I perform the same matching using a Matcher and the same source string, it retrieves the newline exactly as you'd expect it too. Is there a reason for this, that I can't seem to discover, or is this a bug, as I suspect? FYI: I was unable to find a bug in the Sun database that describes this issue, so if it is a bug, it hasn't been reported. • SQL - Updating records based on most recent date

  I am having difficulty updating records within a database based on the most recent date and am looking for some guidance. By the way, I am new to SQL. As background, I have a windows forms application with SQL Express and am using ADO.NET to interact with the database. The application is designed to enable the user to track employee attendance on various courses that must be attended on a periodic basis (e.g. every 6 months, every year etc.). For example, they can pull back data to see the last time employees attended a given course and also update attendance dates if an employee has recently completed a course. I have three data tables: EmployeeDetailsTable - simple list of employees names, email address etc., each with unique ID CourseDetailsTable - simple list of courses, each with unique ID (e.g. 1, 2, 3 etc.) AttendanceRecordsTable - has 3 columns { EmployeeID, CourseID, AttendanceDate, Comments } For any given course, an employee will have an attendance history i.e. if the course needs to be attended each year then they will have one record for as many years as they have been at the company. What I want to be able to do is to update the 'Comments' field for a given employee and given course based on the most recent attendance date. What is the 'correct' SQL syntax for this? I have tried many things (like below) but cannot get it to work: UPDATE AttendanceRecordsTable SET Comments = @Comments WHERE AttendanceRecordsTable.EmployeeID = (SELECT EmployeeDetailsTable.EmployeeID FROM EmployeeDetailsTable WHERE (EmployeeDetailsTable.LastName =@ParameterLastName AND EmployeeDetailsTable.FirstName =@ParameterFirstName) AND AttendanceRecordsTable.CourseID = (SELECT CourseDetailsTable.CourseID FROM CourseDetailsTable WHERE CourseDetailsTable.CourseName =@CourseName)) GROUP BY MAX(AttendanceRecordsTable.LastDate) After much googling, I discovered that MAX is an aggregate function and so I need to use GROUP BY. • JavaScript Module Pattern - What about using "return this"?

  After doing some reading about the Module Pattern, I've seen a few ways of returning the properties which you want to be public. One of the most common ways is to declare your public properties and methods right inside of the "return" statement, apart from your private properties and methods. A similar way (the "Revealing" pattern) is to provide simply references to the properties and methods which you want to be public. Lastly, a third technique I saw was to create a new object inside your module function, to which you assign your new properties before returning said object. This was an interesting idea, but requires the creation of a new object. So I was thinking, why not just use "this.propertyName" to assign your public properties and methods, and finally use "return this" at the end? This way seems much simpler to me, as you can create private properties and methods with the usual "var" or "function" syntax, or use the "this.propertyName" syntax to declare your public methods. Here's the method I'm suggesting: (function() { var privateMethod = function () { alert('This is a private method.'); } this.publicMethod = function () { alert('This is a public method.'); } return this; })(); Are there any pros/cons to using the method above? What about the others?
