• Should I force users to update an application?

  I'm writing an application for a medium sized company that will be used by about 90% of our employees and our clients. In planning for the future we decided to add functionality that will verify that the version of the program that is running is a version that we still support. Currently the application will forcequit if the version is not among our supported versions. Here is my concern. Hypothetically, in version 2.0.0.1 method "A" crashes and burns in glorious fashion and method "B" works just fine. We release 2.0.0.2 to fix method A and deprecate version 0.1. Now if someone is running 0.1 to use method B they will be forced to update to fix something that isn't an issue for them right now. My question is, will the time saved not troubleshooting old, unsupported versions outweigh the cost in usability?

• Java installation for Solaris Studio 12.2

  I have Solaris Studio almost working. My only issue seems to be Java. Here is what I get: ============================ aflory@aflory-laptop:~$ solstudio & [1] 1723 aflory@aflory-laptop:~$ Solaris Studio is unable to find a supported version of Java. Solaris Studio supports Java version 1.6.0_13 and newer and looks for a valid Java installation in the following order: 1) Location specified with --jdkhome command line option 2) In PATH environment variable 3) At /usr/jdk/latest location, if exists 4) At /usr/java location, if exists 5) At /usr location, if exists ============================ I try typing --jdkhome in the console but I get an command not found error. I have added the following to my /home/aflory/.bashrc file: PATH=$PATH:/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_24/bin:/home/aflory/solstudio12.2/bin export PATH I am running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit. I tried installing the 64 bit version of Java JDK, then I tried installing the 32bit version of Java JDK. I don't believe there is a 64bit version of Solaris Studio.

• Is it possible to boot already installed version of Ubuntu from within Win7, e.g. with a vm?

  I have both Ubuntu 12.10 and Win7 installed. I use the former mostly for scientific simulations and the latter for applications. The problem I came across with this configuration is that the simulations take quite a while, and I'm not satisfied enough with solutions like Wine to run the Windows apps while the simulation runs. I would rather not install the simulation programs again, since it took quite an effort. So, is it possible to boot the already installed version of Ubuntu from within Windows 7 via VirtualBox or or something else?

• Macbook OSX applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) works fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my Macbook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted. From the look of it I'm not sure if it's a permissions error or something? I completely re-installed on of the applications Titanium. Didn't seem to help. • Why does mage not generate a compatibleFrameworks attribute

  We are using mage to generate our applications manifests as part of our build process. Upon upgrading to .Net 4 we now find it generates an invalid manifest. The reason is there is no compatibleFrameworks attribute being set in the application manifest which we generate every build. • Brainstorming - MIDI over LAN

  I'm planning out a summer coding project for myself. I work with a lot of MIDI and have been researching it a lot. I know it's an old technology, but it works with a lot of music hardware/software so in my eyes, it's still viable. Anyway, I haven't ever worked with writing drivers or anything, so I don't know where I would start with this. So, provided I have MIDI data already being sent over LAN to a server (I know how to do that part), what steps would it take for the server to channel those received messages to an emulated MIDI device, that could then be accessed in music software and so on? Also, what would it take to also send MIDI data back through the LAN to be received by the device that originally received the message? I'm not really looking for too specific a solution. Really I am just trying to come up with a game plan right now and I need to figure out where/what to research.

• MacBook OS X applications crashing on startup

  Closed my computer last night, went home. Opened it and it had restarted. Now when I open a couple programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Appcelerator Titanium they throw up a nasty error like below. Other programs (Chrome, Firefox, Textmate, Versions) work fine. Any thoughts on this? I haven't owned my MacBook long so I'm not even aware of the right tools or places to look to track this down. Any help would be most appreciated. It's making it hard to get my work done :] If it helps at all both those programs were probably open when it restarted.   I am relatively new to using MSpec and as I write more and more tests it becomes obvious to reduce duplication you often have to use a base class for your setup as per Rob Conery's article I am happy with using the AssertWasCalled method to verify my expectations, but where do you set up a stub's return value, I find it useful to set the context in the base class injecting my dependencies but that (I think) means that I need to set my stubs up in the Because delegate which just feels wrong. Is there a better approach I am missing?

• Facebook Connect iPhone API logout not working

  I am attempting to write a Facebook integration in an iPhone app I'm working on. I have it logging in just fine, but I don't like the idea of being able to turn a feature on without being able to turn it off. • Visual studio Solution for two versions of a web application

  The issue at hand is this. We have a web application with two different versions, a full application, and a light version of it. In it's most part the light version is a subset of the full version, which means that it uses the same web pages and references the same binaries with the full version. However, some of the pages of the full version should not be deployed with the light version obviously, and some binaries (libraries etc) need not be deployed with the full version. If it were a windows forms application we could attempt to approach the issue at hand with preprocessor directives, unfortunately this is not feasible I think. (please do correct me if I'm wrong with this) Anyway, what would a good approach on this? Thanks

  i have been trying to uplaod an application to apple store for 2 days now..first they said the provisioning profile was not right due to which i had to make a new one and upload it again now after that problem was solved while uploading the new binary it said the version was same with the previous minor version(1.0 - which someone else uploaded in my company)..then i changed the version to 1.1 by changing it in target info properties..then i cleaned all targets quite the xcode,restarted the xcode and build the project again..it succeeded and now wen i uploaded it it still says the same error version same with the previous minor version is there any other way of changing the version number though in my info.plist file it is showing version:1.1??

In the index of my iFrame app I have the user establish a new sessions and set the $me and $uid variables as displayed in their example.   There are three assembly version attributes. What are differences? Is it ok if I use AssemblyVersion and ignore the rest? MSDN says: AssemblyVersion: Specifies the version of the assembly being attributed. AssemblyFileVersion: Instructs a compiler to use a specific version number for the Win32 file version resource. The Win32 file version is not required to be the same as the assembly's version number. AssemblyInformationalVersion: Defines additional version information for an assembly manifest.   I'm used to seeing temporary tables created with just the hash/number symbol, like this: CREATE TABLE #Test ( [Id] INT ) However, I've recently come across stored procedure code that specifies the schema name when creating temporary tables, for example: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[#Test] ( [Id] INT ) Is there any reason why you would want to do this? If you're only specifying the user's default schema, does it make any difference? Does this refer to the [dbo] schema in the local database or the tempdb database?

  Was wondering how to inline a usage of fbstp on a 32 bit I86 architecture. I tried something like int main( ) { double foo = 100.0; long bar = 0; asm( "pushl %1; fbstp %0" : "=m"(bar) : "r"(foo) ); ... But bar is unchanged. I have tried reading everything I can find on this but most example simply do things like add two integers together. I can’t find any that talk about pushing operands onto the stack and what I should be doing when an instruction like fbstp writes 80 bits of data back to memory ( i.e. what C type to use ) and how to specify it in the asm syntax. Also on x86-64 there seems to be a pushq and no pushl but fbstp still exists whereas fbstq does not. Is there some other magic for 64 bit.

  I am a Powershell novice and have run into a challenge in reading, sorting, and outputting a csv file. The input csv has no headers, the data is as follows: 05/25/2010,18:48:33,Stop,a1usak,10.128.212.212 05/25/2010,18:48:36,Start,q2uhal,10.136.198.231 05/25/2010,18:48:09,Stop,s0upxb,10.136.198.231 I use the following piping construct to read the file, sort and output to a file: (Get-Content d:\vpnData\u62gvpn2.csv) | %{,[regex]::Split($, ",")} | sort @{Expression={$[3]}},@{Expression={$_[1]}} | out-file d:\vpnData\u62gvpn3.csv The new file is written with the following format: 05/25/2010 07:41:57 Stop a0uaar 10.128.196.160 05/25/2010 12:24:24 Start a0uaar 10.136.199.51 05/25/2010 20:00:56 Stop a0uaar 10.136.199.51 What I would like to see in the output file is a similar format to the original input file with comma dilimiters: 05/25/2010,07:41:57,Stop,a0uaar,10.128.196.160 05/25/2010,12:24:24,Start,a0uaar,10.136.199.51 05/25/2010,20:00:56,Stop,a0uaar,10.136.199.51 But I can't quite seem to get there. I'm almost of the mind that I'll have to write another segment to read the newly produced file and reset its contents to the preferred format for further processing. Thoughts?

But just wondering the best way to print out arrays.. I can't for the life of me get it to print more than 1 element without it retunring an error e.g. Warning: Illegal string offset 'steamid' in /opt/lampp/htdocs/lan/lan-includes/scripts/class.steam.php on line 48 string(1) "R" So I can print one element, and if I add another it returns errors. • How to validate Windows VC++ DLL on Unix systems

  I have a solution, mostly C#, but with a few VC++ projects, that is pushed through our standard release process (perl and bash scripts on Unix boxes). Currently the initiative is to validate DLL and EXE versions as they pass through the process. All the versioning is set so that File Version is of the format $Id: $ (between the colon and the second dollar should be a git commit hash), and the Product Version is of the format $Hudson Build: $ (between the colon and the second dollar should be a string representing the hudson build details). Currently this system works extremely well for the C# projects because this version information is stored as plain strings within the compiled code (you can literally use the unix strings command and see the version information); the problem is that the VC++ projects do not expose this information as strings (I have used a windows system to verify that the version information is correctly being set), so I'm not sure how to extract the version on a unix system. Any suggestions for either A) Getting a string representation of the version embedded in the compiled code, or B) A utility/script which can extract this information?
