• please assist me debug a stack trace

  I am having an issue on a windows 2003 terminal server, where the system process is using a constantly high amount of CPU. I believe that it is the srv.sys that is causing an issue, but not quite sure how to fully diagnose the problem. I have looked at the stack for the srv.sys!workerthread, which is what seems to be using the CPU. The stack is as follows: 0 ntoskrnl.exe!KeSetBasePriorityThread+0xf7 1 ntoskrnl.exe!MiDeleteAddressesInWorkingSet+0x103 2 srv.sys!WorkerThread+0x7c 3 ntoskrnl.exe!FsRtNotifyFilterReportChange+0x10 4 ntoskrnl.exe!RtClearBits+0x24 Can anyone offer any advice based on the above, or some other things I could look at in order to get to the bottom of this?   I am a software developer and I need to test my software on different OS all the time. I am using free VPC images from IE6 compat kit from Microsoft but they have only limited options of Windows Versions (Win XP SP3 and some restricted version of Vista). I need a service where I could rent a Virtual OS in the cloud and connect via Remote Dektop. Use for couple of hours and then discard all the stuff I have been doing there. I tried using Amazon S3 but they only have Windows Server 2003 Anyone knows of such a service that would offer different XP/Vista/7 versions ?

• SQL Server 2008 lincensing question relating to web servers

  We purchased SQL Server 2008 Standard licences last year under the server + device CAL licencing model. Since our server has 2 physical CPUs and only 46 clients, this option was by far the cheapest. Now we'd like to be able to query a small number of stored procedures from our Windows Server 2003 Web Edition server, which is in a seperate zone on our firewall. I think SQL Server 2008 Web Edition could be an option to us, but is it possible to replicate/mirror stored procedures and tables to such a server and would we be breaking any rules by doing so? Is this a form of multiplexing? Also, would replication/mirroring work both ways, if we were to want to write back data from the web server?

• Unable to create system partition or locate existing system partition during Windows-7 installation

  I have Windows XP 32-bit installed on an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe with 2x 500gb drives in RAID1 using the NV RAID controller. On this there are 3 partitions (XP, XP backup and DATA) There are also 4x 500gb drives in RAID10 using the Silicon Image 3114R RAID controller. I just purchased a Windows 7 64-bit as an ISO download upgrade version which I promptly burned to DVD and attempted to perform an upgrade installation. Here is the error message I am getting: Firstly, where are these "Setup log files" located? Second, does this mean I need to find compatible (64-bit?) drivers for the Mainboard and put them on floppy? EDIT: As suggested on another forum, I tried downloading the nVidia Mainboard RAID drivers for Windows 2003 64-bit. I loaded the drivers successfully using the Load Driver button, but pressing NEXT still returns this error.

  All, Situation We are in retail industry with about 10 distributors and use Solomon as the standard ERP for all our systems Each distributor has 1 HQ and 5 - 10 branches, each branch has their own server (Windows 2000/XP/2003 + Solomon + another built-in POS system) Everyday, branches has to extract data and send (via email/Skype) to HQ for data consolidation purpose When we first deployed our ERP, the infrastructure (e.g. Internet connection) wasn't reliable enough. That's why we went with the de-centralized model (each branch got their own server) Now, the infrastructure is mature already. And we need to consolidate data more quickly (not from branches -- HQ -- our company but something like HQ -- our company only) Goal We just have Solomon servers in distributor HQ. All the transactions in branches (retrieved from POS) will by synchronized with HQ server directly) There is a backup plan just in case the Internet goes down, or HQ server goes down Question With the above question, could you guys suggests some model for me ? Should we use Terminal services, any other solutions ? Any watchout/suggestions ? Any good article to read 'bout this ? Thanks a lot

• How Can I Disable CRL Checks For A Windows 2008 App Using WinHTTP?

  I've got a Windows 2008 server with an app that uses WinHTTP for SSL sessions. The server is isolated from the internet but still tries to connect to CRL distribution points, which leads to some timeouts. Since the server has no access to the internet whatsoever, I'd like to disable CRL checks. I had a similar issue on a Windows 2003 server and resolved it by adjusting the following registry keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Http/Parameters/SslBindiongInfo/0.0.0.0:443/DefaultSslCertCheckMode (DWORD=1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Rasman/PPP/EAP/13/NoRevocationCheck (DWORD = 1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Rasman/PPP/EAP/13/NoRootRevocationCheck (DWORD = 1) That doesn't seem to be working in 2008. I've also tried disabling the CRL check from IE under Tools Internet Options Advanced. Is there anything else I can try here?

Now we have established a domain controller. Every user has got a domain account. How to include file server into domain so that the permissions would transfer from local accounts to domain accounts?   When all of the following conditions are true, excel will open (most of the time) but will not open the document itself. No error is displayed. This only occurs with Excel files, Word and powerpoint do open perfectly. Conditions : OS is "Windows 7 Professional 64-bit" office is "Office 2007 Ultimate". excel file is in .xls (2003 format) excel file is password protected excel file is in "My Documents" (or a subfolder of it) file is double-clicked from explorer under Windows 7. Following options do open the excel file as it should : right click and selecting the (bold) open action single click the file and pressing enter moving the file to the desktop and double-click it. non password protected files do open from the same directory. Actions taken not resolving the problem: - reboot - repair office installation - system restore does not work because of Antivirus application installed (message from system restore, using "Symantec Internet Security 2010") Anyone any idea ?

• Exchange 2007: relay only from selected servers based on rDNS

  I'm looking for a way to make Exchange 2007 only accept mail from a certain group of hosts. These hosts all use the same identifying rDNS entry. Exchange 2003 uses a whitelist based on the reverse DNS, there we could add the hostname to the to the "Domain" field. However, in Exchange 2007 this option seems to be removed. Is there a way to do this? IP's however tend to change. These changes can occur at any time, and it is impossible to keep all the servers up-to-date to the new IP's. Running a script that resolves the hostname and whitelists them accordingly is my last-resort option, but this is not fool-proof. Does anyone know whether this is possible and if so, how? Thanks!

  We are setting up our office network and would like to track all the websites visited by our employees. However, we would not like to use any proxy based solutions. Our work is highly dependent on applications in which you cannot configure a proxy. Hence, the approach we would like to follow is setting up a router inside a computer (something like this : http://www.techrepublic.com/article/configure-windows-server-2003-to-act-as-a-router/5844624) This will also allow us to attach multiple ethernet cards and have redundancy in internet connectivity with complete abstraction from the user about which connection is being used. But most importantly, since all the traffic will be going through the computer (configured as a router) I assume there will be a way to run packet analysis on all the request / responses being made. For example, list all the FTP servers connected to (port 21), give a graph of all the URLs visited per day by frequency. Is there already a software which does this ? Or is it possible to build something like this ?

  Hello, our company has recently purchased a new server with the intention of replacing our aging database server. its a full 64bit 2008 enterprise system, i have got the basic server setup and configured and then installed the 64bit version of mysql on the server, this has then been configured to match where possible our existing server as much as it can. however i have noticed that when it was swapped with the production database server our software systems had an increased delay accessing the mysql database this was anything beween 4 - 7 seconds. i have tried disabling TOE, IPv6 and a few other suggested soultions to this but so far cannot find out where this slowdown is coming from. replacing the server with the production one and the delay goes away. in terms of software and hardware the servers are not very identical at all due to one being windows 2003 std with a 32bit server and the new one being windows 2008 enterprise with a 64bit server. thanks Kris

• migrate SharePoint to SBS Server

  We have a SharePoint 2003 server and we need to migrate that data to SharePoint 2011 on a SBS server. We cannot use the migration tool because one of the servers is SBS and the other is not. We exported the SharePoint data from the old system, but the import to the SBS SharePoint is failing with very little info on why. I think that there is a schema conflict, but I am not that familiar with SBS and I am not finding the error in the Windows logs. Has anyone had to migrate data from non-SBS system to an SBS system? Or can anyone help me figure out where to look for more info on what is going on?

• Enable Remote Desktop File Transfer

  Most of the servers I RDP to support cut-and-paste file transfer (from my Win7 64 machine). One does not, and I can't figure out what configuration step is missing. I followed the steps outlined here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313292 but do not see the local file system on the remote server (or vice versa for that matter), and I cannot cut and paste files from the local to the remote system. If I try to cut and paste from the remote system to the local one, I get the error Cannot copy FILENAME: Windows cannot find '%1!ls!'. Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking the Start button and then clicking Search. The remote server is Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition.

  I have a computer on a windows Active Directory network for which reverse dns lookup fails. It doesn't matter which machine runs the lookup. • Routing a PPTP client and VMware Server instance running on the same box

  I have a Windows 2003 SBS box. It has 2 physical NIC's: WAN and LAN. The WAN is a public IP. The LAN is a simple 192.168.2.x subnet with Microsoft DHCP Server. Microsoft Routing and Remote Access Service is used to provide NAT to LAN. The box also runs VMware Server with a virtual machine running Windows XP. I want people to be able to VPN into the box, and connect to these virtual machines on the MSRDP port. I can VPN (PPTP) into the 2003 SBS box fine, as well as ping other machines on the LAN. I can ping the VM from a physical workstation on the LAN and vice-versa. I can ping the VPN client from the a physical workstation on the LAN and vice-versa. I can ping the VPN client from the Server console and vice-versa. I can ping the VM client from the Server console and vice-versa. But I cannot ping the VPN client from the VM and vice-versa. I was hoping to set up 2 or 3 Windows XP virtual machines on our only server, so that a couple of people can remote in to work without having to leave a physical machine on in the office. You could this attempted set up a "poor mans terminal server". • Java and Tomcat issue

  All, At the end of my teather with this and really would appreciate any pointers. I have a system that was installed with Tomcat 5.5.9 and JRE 6 update 13. My issue is that someone has come along and installed tomcat 6 and JRE 5. By this simple action they have destroyed the apps that were originally running on the machine. I have tried to remove the tomcat and java install and from what I can see it has all been removed. My issue, I am now trying to re-install the oringinal app, but this installer now throughs up a file location error and will not re-install the apache part of the installer. Can anyone advise of any hidden location were the apache software may have installed components. This is all installed on Windows Server 2003 R2. Many thanks for your help in advance.

  We are evaluating our options to upgrade our Windows SBS 2003 server. We are considering Windows SBS 2008, which comes with Exchange 2007 and an extra Windows Server 2008 Standard license. If we also bought Exchange 2010, could we install it on the Windows Server 2008 Standard machine and use the web client in combination with the Exchange 2007 server (that would be hosting the mailboxes)? Is that a supported server role for Exchange 2010? I remember reading about so called front-end server configurations, but I have no experience with that. Thanks!

• Re-deploy only the reports on SCOM Management Packs

  I've migrated Reporting Services on a SCOM 2007 R2 install, and noticed that the reports have not being copied. I can create a new report, but the ones I've had because of the management packs are gone. I've tried re-applying the Management Packs however it doesn't re-deploy them and when I try to access for example: Monitoring - Microsoft Windows Print Server - Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and 2003 Print Services - State View - select any item and click Alerts on the right menu. I get the following error: Date: 12/24/2010 12:40:35 PM Application: System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Application Version: 6.1.7221.0 Severity: Error Message: Cannot initialize report. Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportServerException: The item '/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Library/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Alert' cannot be found.   Hello, I have to connect an (ADO) application running on a standalone Windows 2003 R2 server to a SQL 2008 R2 database that is a member of the domain. I have setup an SQL authentication account for this and hard-coded the password into the connection string but I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to use certificate-based authentication for this instead. I haven't been able to find any documentation regarding this apparently new functionality of SQL 2008 R2 anywhere. Could someone kindly point me at some good documentation ? Or at least a description of the functionality and whether it could be used in my case or not ? Thank you in advance

• LCD monitor reports incorrect maximum resolution

  I have four 20" Planar 2010M LCD monitors with a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 connected to two nVidia video cards (8600 GT and 7600 GS). I'm running Windows Server 2003 x86. Recently, two of the monitors have started mis-reporting their maximum resolution as 1280 x 1024. When this first happened, I used nVidia's Custom Resolutions feature to force the monitors back to 1600 x 1200. Yesterday, however, I upgraded nVidia's video card driver, and ever since, I cannot get the DVI one back to 1600 x 1200. When I add the custom resolution in nVidia's control panel, if I set either the width or the height to even a single pixel more than 1280 x 1024, nothing changes when I click Test (the monitor doesn't even flash black, although after 15 seconds, it flashes black and doesn't change). After adding Does anyone know what the problem is? Is there anything I can do about it?

• Minimum space required for Server 2008 R1 install?

  I'm trying to plan disk space for a virtual environment, and wanting to keep virtual disks as small as possible - mostly as apart from the base OS, the software going onto the VM is less than a few MB, so want to avoid physical disk space going to waste; plus it'll give me an idea of how many VMs I could physically fit in {x}GB of physical drive. For Server 2003, I've had installs on 2GB and 5GB sized virtual disks. However for Server 2008, Microsoft recommends a minimum of 10GB (I assume this is both for x32 and x64). For the record, I will be installing the x32 version. Now I know I could just go ahead and try a small install, but wanted to solicit any practical knowledge as well :-) What's the smallest install of Server 2008 possible? (excluding server core installations).

• Excel cell references not updating when referenced cells are sorted.

  There are two tables, each with 75 entries. Each entry in the 2nd table calls an entry in the first table a parent. One of my 2nd table columns contains the "Parent Price", referencing the Price column in the first table, such as "=E50". Table 1 Id Price 1001 79.25 1002 8.99 1003 24.50 Table 2 Id Price Parent Price 2001 50.00 =B2 2002 2.81 =B3 2003 12.00 =B4 The problem is when I sort the first table, none of the second table's "Parent Price" references are updated, and still point to the =E50 cell, which is no longer the correct parent. I don't want to have to name the cells if possible. What style of formula do I enter in the parent price column so that they properly track the cells in the referenced table?

  trying to run a service (logon as admin@PC2) from PC1, when both are in work-group fails. why could this happen? OS is win-2003 and please let me know if any windows remote services have to be turned on or firewall configuration? does having PC's on same workgroup help? let me clarify the question: I am unable to see other computers from "Services Logon Tab select User" Object types available are only "users, built in security principals" Location is only local computer.   I am trying to open an additional mailbox in Outlook 2003 for one of my users. She already has three additional mailboxes in the list (found in the advanced account settings), and these work fine. When I click the "Add..." button, it immediately reports: The name could not be resolved. The action could not be completed. This is before I am prompted for the name. We're using an externally hosted Exchange 2007 server. How do I resolve this?

• Accept incoming L2TP connections on Windows 7

  Windows 2003 can be configured as a VPN server that uses L2TP with a preshared key. Windows 7 can be configured to accept incoming VPN connections, presumably using PPTP. Is there a way to configure Windows 7 to accept incoming L2TP connections? The configuration settings for incoming connections is extremely sparse; I don't see any place to enter a preshared key or specify the protocol to use. Perhaps it is beyond the capabilities of Win 7, but I hold out hope that I'm overlooking some Group Policy settings or registry edits that allow it.
