  • Best practices for using Amazon SQS - Polling the queue

    I'm designing a service for sending out emails for our eCommerce site (order confirmations, alerts etc...) The plan is to have a "SendEmail" method, that generates a chunk of XML representing the email to be sent, and sticks it on an Amazon SQS queue. My web app(s) and other applications will use this to "send" emails. I then require a way of checking the queue, and physically sending out the email messages. (I know how I'm going to be dispatching emails) I'm curious as to what the best way to "poll" the queue would be? Should I create a windows service, and use something like Quartz.net to schedule it to check the queue every x number of minutes for example? Is there a better way of doing this?

  • Writing my own iostream utility class: Is this a good idea?

    I have an application that wants to read word by word, delimited by whitespace, from a file. I am using code along these lines: std::istream in; string word; while (in.good()) { in>>word; // Processing, etc. ... } My issue is that the processing on the words themselves is actually rather light. The major time consumer is a set of mySQL queries I run. What I was thinking is writing a buffered class that reads something like a kilobyte from the file, initializes a stringstream as a buffer, and performs extraction from that transparently to avoid a great many IO operations. Thoughts and advice?

    I need to do the following thing: var a = from c in DB.Customers where (from t1 in DB.Table1 where t1.Date >= DataTime.Now select t1.ID).Contains(c.ID) && (from t2 in DB.Table2 where t2.Date >= DataTime.Now select t2.ID).Contains(c.ID) select a It doesn't want to run. I get the following error: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. But when I try to run var a = from c in DB.Customers where (from t1 in DB.Table1 where t1.Date >= DataTime.Now select t1.ID).Contains(c.ID) select a OR var a = from c in DB.Customers where (from t2 in DB.Table2 where t2.Date = DataTime.Now select t2.ID).Contains(c.ID) select a It works! I'm sure that there both IN queries contain some customers ids.

I want to insert a circle at point -55, 333. With a radius of 10. How can I put this circle into the geometry field? Of course, then I would want to check which circles overlap a given circle.     Hello, I've got some SQL that used to work with an older MySQL version, but after upgrading to a newer MySQL 5 version, I'm getting an error. Here's the SQL: SELECT portfolio.*, projects.*, types.* FROM projects, types LEFT JOIN portfolio ON portfolio.pfProjectID = projects.projectID WHERE projects.projectType = types.typeID AND types.typeID = #URL.a# ORDER BY types.typeSort, projects.projectPriority ASC and the new error I'm receiving: Unknown column 'projects.projectID' in 'on clause' How can I convert this to compatible SQL for the newer MySQL version?   • ASP.NET MVC 2 - ViewData empty after POST

    I don't really know where to look for an error... the situation: I have an ASPX view which contains a form and a few input's, and when I click the submit button everything is POST'ed to one of my ASP.NET MVC actions. When I set a breakpoint there, it is hit correctly. When I use FireBug to see what is sent to the action, I correctly see data1=abc&data2=something&data3=1234. However, nothing is arriving in my action method. ViewData is empty, there is no ViewData["data1"] or anything else that would show that data arrived. How can this be? Where can I start looking for the error?

  • How do you detect when the Flowplayer has started playing the video?

    Hi. I'm using the Flowplayer Flash video player to play MP4 videos inside an AnythingSlider. I need to detect when the user has clicked the start button on the video so to stop the slideshow and allow the user to view the video. I've tried using this code just to get an alert box but it doesn't do anything (the code is at the end of the page, before the closing </body> tag): <script type="text/javascript"> $f("player","global/js/flowplayer/flowplayer-3.1.5.swf",{ onStart: function(clip) { alert('player started'); } }); </script> The Flowplayer is implemented as part of the html5media library, which automatically detects whether the browser can handle the <video> tag; if not, it replaces the anchor tag below with the Flowplayer: <video id="vid" width="372" height="209" poster="global/vid/bbq-poster.jpg" controls preload> <source id="videoSource" src="global/vid/BBQ_Festival.mp4" type='video/mp4; codecs="avc1.42E01E, mp4a.40.2"' onerror="fallback(this.parentNode)" ></source> <a href="global/vid/BBQ_Festival.mp4" style="display:block;width:372px;height:209px; padding-left:5px; " id="player"> </a> </video> So the $f() function call is in a JavaScript block at the end of the page, to give the player a chance to load correctly.     Hi all, bit of a jquery rookie here trying to get something to work. Basically I have a div with a class "nav" and inside that div is a nav list. I want to change the background-image of "nav" when hovering over an item in the navlist, so I made this unsuccesful effort: enter code here $(function(){ $("li#hover-first").mouseover(function(){ $("div.nav").removeClass("nav").addClass("navbg"); .mouseout(function(){$("div.nav").removeClass("navbg").addClass("nav"); }); So the idea is, once the first li item is hovered over, the div with classname "nav" has it's class removed and has "navbg" added (which has the alternate background image). Obviously this isn't working, so any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks.

  • Trouble defining a variable in PHP?

    Alright, so a content page uses this: $tab = "Friends"; $title = "User Profile"; include '(the header file, with nav)'; And the header page has the code: if ($tab == "Friends") { echo '<li id="current">'; } else { echo '<li>'; } The problem is, that the if $tab == Friends condition is never activated, and no other variables are carried from the the content page, to the header page. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Update: Alright, the problem seemed to disappear when I used ../scripts/filename.php, and only occurred when I used a full URL? Any ideas why?

  • Macro for one-to-many splitting of Word documents

    I have a Word document which is several hundred pages long. I would like to use a macro to automatically create about a dozen or so sub-documents based on certain rules (mainly, occurrence of certain strings in each Section). Is this possible? What VBA functions should I read-up on? Does anybody know of any code examples which are even remotely similar and which I may be able to customize for my purposes? Thanks

    I need the latest Subsonic build or build it by my own. Subsonic project web site shows the latest available version is Subsonic v3.0.0.3 released at July 15, 2009. Questions: Are there any later builds - e.g. maintained by community members? If so, how can I get the latest one? In worst case I'm ready to get the latest source code and try to build it by my own. Are there any instructions for this? Please note, that I'm not interested in almost 1 year old builds - I need a build based on the latest code for tests (LINQ, performance), ideally - compiled for .NET 4.0.

  • Is there anything wrong with my Factory class?

    class PieceFactory { @SuppressWarnings("rawtypes") public Piece createPiece(String pieceType) throws Throwable{ Class pieceClass = Class.forName(pieceType); Piece piece = (Piece) pieceClass.newInstance(); return piece; } } I'm not all used to handling exceptions yet therefore I'm just throwing them, but everywhere I use a method that uses this factory it tells me I have to throw exceptions like throwable. For example, in one of my classes I have a method that instantiates a lot of objects using the method that uses the factory. I can use the method in that class by just throwing the exception, however it won't work if I try to pass a reference to that class to another class and then use the method from there. Then it forces me to try catch the exception. I probably don't need a factory but it seemed interesting and I'd like to try to use patterns. The reason I created the factory was that I have 6 subclasses of Piece and I wan't to use a method to instantiate them by passing the type of subclass I want as an argument to the method.

  • Why does a sub-class class of a class have to be static in order to initialize the sub-class in the

    So, the question is more or less as I wrote. I understand that it's probably not clear at all so I'll give an example. I have class Tree and in it there is the class Node, and the empty constructor of Tree is written: public class RBTree { private RBNode head; public RBTree(RBNode head,RBTree leftT,RBTree rightT){ this.head=head; this.head.leftT.head.father = head; this.head.rightT.head.father = head; } public RBTree(RBNode head){ this(head,new RBTree(),new RBTree()); } public RBTree(){ this(new RBNode(),null,null); } public class RBNode{ private int value; private boolean isBlack; private RBNode father; private RBTree leftT; private RBTree rightT; } } Eclipse gives me the error: "No enclosing instance of type RBTree is available due to some intermediate constructor invocation" for the "new RBTree()" in the empty constructor. However, if I change the RBNode to be a static class, there is no problem. So why is it working when the class is static. BTW, I found an easy solution for the cunstructor: public RBTree(){ this.head = new RBNode(); } So, I have no idea what is the problem in the first piece of code.
