I wrote an article on my personal blog a few weeks ago about my preparation for my first Microsoft exam, 70-432. ( link ) Since then I’ve been reading and demo’ing all the relevant features of SQL Server in the hope that if I get questions on them I’ll be prepared. I’ve learnt a few things in the last couple of weeks, some good, some bad which I’ll now share. The first thing I found is that learning about how SQL Server works is fun and interesting, far better than spending an evening...(read more)
It is never a good idea to let your users be the ones to tell you of database server outages. It is far better to be able to spot potential problems by being alerted for the most relevant conditions on your servers at the best threshold. This will take time and patience, but the reward will be an alerting system which allows you to deal more effectively with issues before they involve system down-time
I've been trying to implement a text classification system. It needs to read a text file, and extract the words and the word frequency. So far, I've been planning to parse the words, put them in a dictionary and save it to an XML file. I am using C++/CLI.
Is this a good implementation or is there a simpler or better implementation?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and it is a collection of techniques to help your website rank better for certain search terms. Below are 5 tips to help you optimize your website and have the best chance of succeeding online. With anything related to SEO, you have to ensure that you choose the right keywords.
Studies have shown that an effective SEO strategy gives a better return on investment than traditional kinds of advertising, such as mail, TV, or radio. That's why your company's SEO strategy should be a priority.
How can I change the language order by command-line (or text editor)? i.e. without using the graphical "gnome-language-selector".
(Or is there a better GUI which allows you to select multiple language entries and move them all to another position directly, without having to do it one by one?)
Alternatively: Where are the user-specific language settings stored? i.e. the /etc/default/locale for users.
I have a job I would like to leave. On advice from friends and parents I have stayed. Their primary concern is that it would look bad on my resume if I left only after a few months of joining.
My concerns with the job are as follows:
When I started it was preferred I provide and use my own equipment.
Could be out of business in a few months from lack of cash flow
Poor code quality: memory leaks and lack of error handling. The same mistakes continue to be made even though I have raised the issue. It has become evident that co-workers do not understand memory management rules of the platform and are not interested in learning them. Yet, there is still surprise from them when strange bugs continue to crop up. As a result don't feel I will learn from co-workers. Plus, fixing the the lingering bugs and trying to keep up on new feature development is like a game of whack-o-mole that never ends.
I don't believe in the companies vision or its ability to execute on the ideas anymore.
My ideas and suggestions for very small tweaks are quickly dismissed. And so more than half or so have come back as bugs that we end up needing to address. I have been told to wait on fixing bugs in codes until we can talk to the original author. I don't feel I am allowed to take initiative to just fix/change things and do what I think is best. Everything needs consensus even for a bug fix before any work is done. I am adopting a shut-up and just do what I am told approach to save myself from ulcers.
Lots of meetings (I am personally not involved in all of them which is good) but the sheer amount reminds me of days at a big corporation. Why is everyone around me always meeting?
It's a small company. I can count everyone on my toes and fingers. I can say with certainty I have no interest in working with any of them again. This is the first time I have truly worked with a group of so called "B and C players".
Ultimately, I think it is my fault for not doing a better job evaluating the team and company before joining. But I have generated a better set of questions when probing companies in the future. My questions are:
How bad does it look to have left a job soon (few months) after starting?
What would be the best way to explain my concerns and reasons for leaving without badmouthing the company?
Should I stick it out to what I believe will be the soon end of the company?
Why my computer runs too slow when I install Ubuntu or any other Linux (Debian works better than other distros), but with windows works fine...?
My configuration is:
Processor: Intel Celeron CPU 1.70GHz
Graphics: Ati Radeon 9250 128 MB
HD: Western Digital 120GB
RAM: 2GB DDR1
Motherboard: MSI (MS-6566)
Is there anything unsuported by Ubuntu, or any Linux. If so, is there any way to get it work fine (visual effects are not important to me). What do I need to do?

I need to edit thousands of pages for a website with dynamic content added manually by the owner throughout 3 years, it has thousands of pages and I'm sure there is a better way to edit them without spending hours opening each one of them.
I know it would be easy to just edit the styles.css but page dynamics like the positions of the google ad-boxes are individually edited inside the html of each page, so there is no way to solve this through css.
Is there some sort of code, script and macro that can edit the pages at once?

Just because it is possible to do many configuration jobs 'click by bleeding click', doesn't mean that it is a good idea. It is better to step back, plan, and use the advanced resources provided for managing large network. Printer configuration is the perfect illustration of this, and Joseph demonstrates how the use of Group Policy, PowerShell, and Print Management can turn a time-consuming chore into a pleasure.
I'm currently working on a java MMO with a pretty solid start, but I've come across an issue I need a little help with.
I'm working on player position's. Meaning there X/Y on the screen, if the PlayerA has a higher FPS(Frames Per Second) then other players, the resulting action will be that PlayerA will move faster than everyone else. I know the reasoning for this, it's because when the game draws I just use: x++;
What would a better method be?

When it comes to making our online marketing campaigns a success, most of us would be better off hiring a variety of web writing services to help. After all, while we've all seen (and envied) the one-man-act extraordinaire, there isn't too many of us who haven't been victim to the frazzled, pressure-cooker feeling of having sole responsibility for our companies' successes either. Besides, who in their right mind would put that kind of pressure on themselves when outsourcing to a web writing service can be just as profitable?

I had planned to study and apply unit testing to my code, but after talking with my colleagues, some of them suggested to me that it's not necessary and it has a very little benefit. They also claim that only a few companies actually do unit testing with production software.
I am curious how people have applied unit testing at work and what benefits they are getting from using them, e.g., better code quality, reduced development time in the long term, etc.
People sell their websites for all sorts of reasons, and selling a site that has a decent amount of traffic is a great way to make a bit of extra money. So why would you sell your website? Perhaps you need the money for rent, or perhaps you just don't have the time to work on that site anymore (or perhaps you've moved onto doing bigger and better things).
If you want people to find your business online, it takes more than good keywords. It also requires reputable sites linking to your Web site. Our SEO expert shows you how to build solid links for better search results — and more customers.

It is often generalized that seeks are better than scans in terms of retrieving data from SQL Server. The index hint FORCESCAN was recently introduced so that you could coerce the optimizer to perform a scan instead of a seek. Which might lead you to wonder: Why would I ever want a scan instead of a seek?

We have a page where a user can sign a pledge to recycle by clicking a pledge button. A script writes it to a text file which updates the number on the page. In the past 2 days there have been 185 pledges signed but only 63 page views in GA.

SQL Server Management Studio 2012 has some neat settings that you can use to help
