• OSX: Python packages fail to install, error message "/usr/local/bin: File Exists"

  I keep trying to install django and other python packages, and I keep getting the exact same error message: Installing django-admin.py script to /usr/local/bin error: /usr/local/bin: File exists So I look to make sure that my /usr/local folder is okay. At first glance it appears okay, until I try cd-ing into my bin. It says it can't because it's not a directory. Peculiar, I thought, so then I tried a Anchorage:local khotchkiss$ ls -a -l total 26168 drwxr-xr-x 6 root wheel 204 Dec 26 20:18 . drwxr-xr-x@ 14 root wheel 476 Feb 24 12:54 .. -rwxr-xr-x@ 1 root wheel 13395080 Oct 22 23:04 bin drwxr-xr-x 8 root wheel 272 Dec 26 20:18 git drwxr-xr-x 4 root wheel 136 Dec 18 11:31 include drwxr-xr-x 12 root wheel 408 Dec 18 11:31 lib And haven't a clue of what the 'bin' is, why its so large, and why its preventing me from installing python packages. • How to boot Windows XP using the image file(not the extracted image file)

  Is it possible to boot from an iso image file itself. Because when you burn it, it gets extracted. Because in linux you can just place the .iso file in a removable media and boot from it without extracting. Is it possible to make something like that in windows? What I'm saying is related to this: http://wintoflash.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=312 Something like creating a flash drive which has the ability to install multiple os. They have something like this in pendrivelinux but I can't find it anymore. But that boot manager can only install linux. And other live cd's used in cleaning the system. That's why I'm asking if its possible to make a custom windows xp or windows 7 installer so that the image file alone can boot.

  I've created a generic batch (or Windows Command) file that lets me loop through the contents of a directory and call a command for each item. I've tried pre-pending the directory variable onto the front, like %_COMMAND% %_DIR%\"%%f", but this leaves a quotation mark in the parameter I pass. For example, if I call my batch file exec_dir.bat, and call it with the following echo_test.bat, I see that all of the files have a quotation mark when echo_test.bat runs. echo %~dpn1.mp4 That batch script produces: > exec_dir.bat "C:\Users\User\Desktop\Test Folder" echo_test.bat *.txt C:\Users\User\Desktop\Test Folder\"Test File.txt C:\Users\User\Desktop\Test Folder\"Test2.txt My thought is that it has something to do with the \ as an escape character, but I can't seem to work around it.

• Ubuntu 9.10 desktop installation via USB (boot)

  I have made a live boot USB using the UnetBootIn tool for Ubuntu 9.10. I have Windows XP SP2 installed as the primary OS, and I want to make a partition for Ubuntu. But when I try to boot it via USB, it just goes to boot menu of Ubuntu, then I enter the default type for installation. After that nothing happens, just the Ubuntu logo shows up and just that nothing happens after that. I can try the simpler task also i.e. install via CD but I want to know what's not working with this USB boot method. Thanks in advance.

• Grub install fails while installing Ubuntu on RAID

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 using the alternate install CD, but I keep getting stuck. I get through the first few steps of the install process easily enough (telling it what partition to install to, what user ID and password to create, time zone, etc.), but then it suddenly pops up a menu asking me what the next step in the install process is. It has "Install the GRUB boot loader on a hard disk" selected by default. When I select it, it goes to another screen with a progress bar and a label "Installing the 'grub2' package." The progress bar gets to 16%, and then I get returned to the same menu. No matter how many times I try to install grub, the exact same thing happens. I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a two disk RAID-1 array. This is the RAID card I'm using: http://www.siig.com/ViewProduct.aspx?pn=SC-SAER12-S2. Any ideas what may be causing this to happen and how I can fix it? Thanks!

• Black Screen when Computer Boots

  I'm having a serious problem with my computer; I think I've narrowed it down to the motherboard, but I'd like a second opinion before I spend the money. Before I moved into my new apartment, my desktop was working fine; now, it just won't work. It will turn on, the fans will spin up, lights come on... but nothing appears on the screen. No POST, nothing. I've tried: A different monitor (both are VGA) A different video-card (both are DVI, PCIe) Three different, known-good VGA-DVI adapters The onboard video port (VGA) Reseating the memory, and trying only one stick Different, known-good wall-outlets Unplugging the HDD and CD-drive from both the motherboard and PSU Replacing the PSU Has anyone had this happen before? But doing that, the command rvmsudo foreman export ... asks for root password and I cannot do anything. • Synchronizing git repository with post-receive hook

  Hello, I have a redmine server and a gitolite server on the same machine. I want Redmine's GIT repository to get updated when a commit is registered. I thought of adding a post-receive script that updates the repository: post-receive: cd home/redmine/repositories/repo git pull this doesn't work because the script is run by the gitolite user instead of the redmine user owner of the repository cloned folder. How can I change the user that executes the script inside a batch script?, is there a cleaner way of updating the repository? thanks in advance.

• Restore XP on Acer Aspire One netbook

  I have an Acer Aspire One D250 netbook which came with Windows XP (but no CD) on which I have since installed Xubuntu 9.10. Now I am trying to sell it, but I cannot find a way to recover XP. I have read in a lot of different places that holding Alt+F10 during boot should send me to a recovery menu (which will allow me to restore XP from a "secret partition"), but I have tried many times to no avail. The best I can do is get the BIOS setup screen by holding F2, but there doesn't seem to be any recovery option there. After the initial option to go into the BIOS setup GRUB starts loading and there don't seem to be any more opportunities to enter a system setup screen. Please help!

• Installed Perl DBI Module Can't Be Found

  I'm trying to setup a Perl development environment on my Mac laptop and have been having a really hard time getting it working. I thought I had everything configured correctly but when I try to run a sample script it is reporting errors with the DBI module and can't access the DB. • Issues with partitions WIN 7

  I was trying to make some space to install linux in my HP notebook. The computer had 4 partitions, I made space shrinking one and created a new one (facepalm) using the windows partitioning tool. It show me some warning message saying something about dynamic partitions, I ingored it, and went to the linux live CD. I installed linux in the new partition, after the installation completed it told me that GRUB cannot be installed I dont remember why. So now, it doesnt boot, neither windows nor linux. After google for a while I found the diskpart command, it gives me this info: DISKPART> list disk DISK ### Status -------- --------------- DISK 0 Invalid DISKPART> select disk 0 DISKPART> select partition Partition ### TYPE ------------- -------------- Partition 1 Dynamic Data Partition 2 Dynamic Data Partition 3 Dynamic Data Partition 4 Primary <- I think I put linux here Any idea whats happening? • gparted won't boot from liveCD

  Hello, Fedora 12 2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686 I downloaded the gparted iso and burnt it to a CD. gparted-live-0.5.2-1 This GParted Live was created by: create-gparted-live -l en -b u -e e -d sid -m http://free.nchc.org.tw/debian -s http://free.nchc.org.tw/debian-security -g http://free.nchc.org.tw/drbl-core -n 2.6.32-3 -i 0.5.2-1 The files and folders: isolinux live syslinux COPYING GParted-Live-Version I put the disk in and reboot. Nothing happens. I just get a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner. I then have to switch of the power button to get it to reboot. I have done this a number of time and the results are the same. Can anyone tell me how to boot from the gparted liveCD? Many thanks for any suggestions,

• Simple Workstation Imaging Solution?

  I need a fairly cheap imaging solution for Windows XP corporate desktops. Ideally, I'd be able to set up a desktop exactly as we want it, create an image, deploy this image to a server, then boot a new desktop to a CD/USB Drive/Network and quickly set up the workstation. Ideally, each computer would also have a unique workstation name. Any ideas? Right now I'm using a custom built Linux DD solution, but it's slow, not network-based, can't image multiple computers at the same time as there's only one copy on a USB drive, and can't uniquely name the computers. • Windows XP Installation issue - cannot find hard disk

  A friend of mine gave me a laptop with Windows 8 installed and nothing else. I don't like it so I am trying to remove it by installing Windows XP. I have a windows XP installation CD that I have used before and worked fine, but didn't work when I tried to install it on the Windows 8 machine. It keeps telling me I don't have a drive to install to. Then I log into Windows 8 again and install check partitions. I found 2 and tried to make a new one but it will only let me make one of 69mb. Next, I tied to find a way to go back to XP with BCD install and try to set the boot loader for XP but it wasnt there. Somehow I deleted the bootloader for Windows 8 and now it asks me for a recovery tool for media. I am not familiar with the laptop specs, but it is a Toshiba with about 250GB storage, and above 1GHz processor.

• CentOS 5.4 NFS v4 client file permissions differ from original files & NFS Share file contents

  Having a strange problem with NFS share and file permissions on the 1 out of the 2 NFS clients, web1 has file permissions issues but web2 is fine. web1 and web2 are load balanced web servers. So questions are: how do I ensure NFS share file contents retain the same permissions for user/group as the original files on web1 server like they do on web2 server ? how do I reverse what I did on web1, i tried unmount command and said command not found ? Information: I'm using 3 dedicated server setup. All 3 servers CentOS 5.4 64bit based. servers are as follows: web1 - nfs client with file permissions issues web2 - nfs client file permissions are OKAY db1 - nfs share at /nfsroot web2 nfs client was setup by my web host, while web1 was setup by me. I did the following commands on web1 and it worked with updating db1 nfsroot share at /nfsroot/site_css with latest files on web1 but the file permissions don't stick even if i use tar with -p command to perserve file permissions ? cd /home/username/public_html/forums/script/ tar -zcp site_css/ > site_css.tar.gz mount -t nfs4 nfsshareipaddress:/site_css /home/username/public_html/forums/scripts/site_css/ -o rw,soft cd /home/username/public_html/forums/script/ tar -zxf site_css.tar.gz But checking on web1 file permissions no longer username user/group but owned by nobody ? but web2 file permissions correct ? This is only a problem for web1 while web2 is correct ? Looks like numeric ids aren't the same ?   I'm trying to install Mac OS X 10.5 on a MacBook that previously had 10.4 on it. i am getting an error after selecting the language. What could be causing a box on the screen that says: Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer. It's an Intel MacBook with 1GB of DDR2 memory. 80GB hard drive. It has been formatted now, so there's no going back. According to the System Profiler on the 10.5 boot CD, the MacBook is version MacBook2,1. Thanks!

I downloaded and installed both modules manually to work with MAMP using the following commands as specified in this forum post: For DBI 1. cd /Library/Perl/DBI-1.611 2. sudo Perl Makefile.PL 3. sudo make 4. sudo make install For DBD 1. cd /Library/Perl/DBD-mysql-4.014 2. sudo Perl Makefile.PL --mysql_config=/Applications/MAMP/Library/bin/mysql_config 3. sudo make 4. sudo make install What I noticed while running the above commands is that the files seems to be getting installed in the '/opt/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.9/darwin-2level/' directory which doesn't seem to be one of the search directories that Apache mentions in the error at the beginning of this post. I honestly don't know what option makes more sense and could use guidance on that as well. As you can probably tell I'm pretty lost at the moment. Please help!!! Thanks in advance.

• Mac - Run java program at launch

  I want to launch a java program (server program) at computer start up. I can run it from the command line perfectly. I created /Library/Server/startFS.sh. The file is executable by root and contains: cd /Library/Server/FiloSync /usr/bin/java -jar /Library/Server/FiloSync/filosync-server-latest.jar -p 7000 -s 7001 I can't get my launchd plist included here, the formatting is all off. I can run it fine from the command line: './startFS.sh' but when I put create the plist (via Lingon), nothing happens. Now, when run, it outputs a few lines to the console. Might that be problem?? I have tried prepending 'nohup' and post pending '&', but no combination seems to work. Help please.

• nginx symlinks permission denied / 403 Forbidden on Mac OSX

  So I have an nginx server running on Mac OSX and I am trying to create a symlink in my nginx www directory from somewhere else. In the browser I get the wonderful 403 Forbidden error. I have also tried chmod'ing my life away for the past few hours. There doesn't seem to be anything on the stack about it. One thing concerns me is that I am not sure if symlinks are directly supported by ngninx on Mac. Trying to use disable_symlink directive results in: nginx: [emerg] unknown directive "disable_symlinks" in /usr/local/etc/nginx/nginx.conf:44` Some info about my setup: nginx -v : nginx version: nginx/1.4.2 To create the symlink I do the following: cd /Users/levi/www ln -s "/Users/levi/Desktop/.../client" "/Users/levi/www/client" The error in the log: [error] 11864#0: *7 open() "/Users/levi/www/client" failed (13: Permission denied), client: 127.0.0.1, server: _, request: "GET /client HTTP/1.1", host: "localhost" Any help is much appreciated. Let me know if there's any more information I can give you.

• /usr/bin/python Replacement

  If I've changed the target of /usr/bin/python from /usr/bin/python2.7 to /usr/bin/python3.2 (I realize this was an ABSOUTELY HORRIBLE idea) in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. Afterwards, several applications, including software-center and update-manager have stopped working. Insofar as I can tell, this is because they are written in Python2.7. I replaced the default /usr/bin/python shebang with the 2.7 one, and this fixes them on the application level. Switching /usr/bin/python back to /usr/bin/python2.7 really isn't an option, but is there a list of all applications installed by default in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, if installed from a new CD-R, that use a shebang of #!/usr/bin/python instead of #!/usr/bin/pythonX.Y?

• Permissions problem on mounting afp drive

  I am trying to mount a network drive via AFP on an Ubuntu 10.04 server machine. After installing AFP support, I use the following command: sudo mount_afp afp://USER:[email protected]/directory/ /media/dir This seems to work and it tells me that mounting succeeded. However, when I navigate to /media/dir I get the following error: cd: cfs: Input/output error Permissions in /media are: d????????? ? ? ? ? dir/ drwx------ 12 user 4.0K 2010-10-25 16:08 otherdisk/ So there is a permissions problem here. I eventually want to mount this drive automatically using fstab. What do I need to do to make the disk accessible?

• How to sort by file's modified date on IIS web server in Windows 7?

  Apache has this built in since 1996 which is 17 years ago... for Microsoft's IIS Web server which is available on Windows 7, is there a way to make it be able to sort the file listing by file modification dates? For example, show the file listing with the label "Date", "Filename", and clicking it will sort the files by that attribute. The only info I could find is: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732762(v=ws.10).aspx cd %windir%\system32\inetsrv appcmd set config /section:directoryBrowse /showFlags:Time|Size|Extension|Date|LongDate|None but it doesn't work.

• HP ML115 with P400 Smart Array Controller

  Hi, I have a HP ML115 server I have installed a HP P400 Smart Array Controller card, I also have 4 x 1TB Samsung Hard drives. I'm unable to get the the controller to detect the hard drives, I have changed the drives to SATA 1.5G without luck, I have also tried connecting a single 80GB Maxtor drive without luck The controller shows up just after boot and tries to initialize, The controller does not show up in the POST prompt, although I can see the controller when booting off a ACU CD THe controller firmware is a little old v4.12 but I have no way to update it. Any ideas on how I can get this going?

  i installed gentoo by the handbook from official site , when i got into the step 7.b. Installing the Sources , the book says :Code Listing 2.2: Viewing the kernel source symlink, When you take a look in /usr/src you should see a symlink called linux pointing to your kernel source. but ,in my virtualbox, there is no such file! ,only a linux-3..3.38-gentoo directory in the src and when i tried to use cd linux-3.3.38-gentoo and make menuconfig , an error occured , init/Kconfig:389: can't open file "kernel/irq/Kconfig" how can i solve the problem?
