However, as I mentioned in Part 1, Task Decomposition tends to be a bit more difficult than data decomposition, and can require a bit more effort.  Before we being parallelizing our algorithm based on the tasks being performed, we need to decompose our problem, and take special care of certain considerations such as ordering and grouping of tasks. Up to this point in this series, I’ve focused on parallelization techniques which are most appropriate when a problem space can be decomposed by data.  Using PLINQ and the Parallel class, I’ve shown how problem spaces where there is a collection of data, and each element needs to be processed, can potentially be parallelized. However, there are many other routines where this is not appropriate.  Often, instead of working on a collection of data, there is a single piece of data which must be processed using an algorithm or series of algorithms.  Here, there is no collection of data, but there may still be opportunities for parallelism. As I mentioned before, in cases like this, the approach is to look at your overall routine, and decompose your problem space based on tasks.  The idea here is to look for discrete “tasks,” individual pieces of work which can be conceptually thought of as a single operation. Let’s revisit the example I used in Part 1, an application startup path.  Say we want our program, at startup, to do a bunch of individual actions, or “tasks”.  The following is our list of duties we must perform right at startup: Display a splash screen Request a license from our license manager Check for an update to the software from our web server If an update is available, download it Setup our menu structure based on our current license Open and display our main, welcome Window Hide the splash screen The first step in Task Decomposition is breaking up the problem space into discrete tasks. This, naturally, can be abstracted as seven discrete tasks.  In the serial version of our program, if we were to diagram this, the general process would appear as: These tasks, obviously, provide some opportunities for parallelism.  Before we can parallelize this routine, we need to analyze these tasks, and find any dependencies between tasks.  In this case, our dependencies include: The splash screen must be displayed first, and as quickly as possible. We can’t download an update before we see whether one exists. Our menu structure depends on our license, so we must check for the license before setting up the menus. Since our welcome screen will notify the user of an update, we can’t show it until we’ve downloaded the update. Since our welcome screen includes menus that are customized based off the licensing, we can’t display it until we’ve received a license. We can’t hide the splash until our welcome screen is displayed. By listing our dependencies, we start to see the natural ordering that must occur for the tasks to be processed correctly. The second step in Task Decomposition is determining the dependencies between tasks, and ordering tasks based on their dependencies. Looking at these tasks, and looking at all the dependencies, we quickly see that even a simple decomposition such as this one can get quite complicated.  In order to simplify the problem of defining the dependencies, it’s often a useful practice to group our tasks into larger, discrete tasks.  The goal when grouping tasks is that you want to make each task “group” have as few dependencies as possible to other tasks or groups, and then work out the dependencies within that group.  Typically, this works best when any external dependency is based on the “last” task within the group when it’s ordered, although that is not a firm requirement.  This process is often called Grouping Tasks.  In our case, we can easily group together tasks, effectively turning this into four discrete task groups: 1. Show our splash screen – This needs to be left as its own task.  First, multiple things depend on this task, mainly because we want this to start before any other action, and start as quickly as possible. 2. Check for Update and Download the Update if it Exists - These two tasks logically group together.  We know we only download an update if the update exists, so that naturally follows.  This task has one dependency as an input, and other tasks only rely on the final task within this group. 3. Request a License, and then Setup the Menus – Here, we can group these two tasks together.  Although we mentioned that our welcome screen depends on the license returned, it also depends on setting up the menu, which is the final task here.  Setting up our menus cannot happen until after our license is requested.  By grouping these together, we further reduce our problem space. 4. Display welcome and hide splash - Finally, we can display our welcome window and hide our splash screen.  This task group depends on all three previous task groups – it cannot happen until all three of the previous groups have completed. By grouping the tasks together, we reduce our problem space, and can naturally see a pattern for how this process can be parallelized.  The diagram below shows one approach: The orange boxes show each task group, with each task represented within.  We can, now, effectively take these tasks, and run a large portion of this process in parallel, including the portions which may be the most time consuming.  We’ve now created two parallel paths which our process execution can follow, hopefully speeding up the application startup time dramatically. The main point to remember here is that, when decomposing your problem space by tasks, you need to: Define each discrete action as an individual Task Discover dependencies between your tasks Group tasks based on their dependencies Order the tasks and groups of tasks

  Recently I've started learning Unity3D. I'm working on a game as an exercise in which you control a space ship and have to dodge asteroids. If you feel like it's getting a bit too much you can hit the space bar, emitting a blast in all directions that repulses nearby asteroids. To create this blast I have the following code: public class PlayerBlastScript : MonoBehaviour { public ParticleSystem BlastEffect; // Update is called once per frame void Update () { if (Input.GetKeyUp(KeyCode.Space)) { Fire(); } } public void Fire() { ParticleEmitter effect = (ParticleEmitter) Instantiate (BlastEffect, transform.position, Quaternion.identity); effect.Emit(); Vector3 explosionPos = transform.position; Collider[] colliders = Physics.OverlapSphere(explosionPos, 25.0f); foreach(Collider hit in colliders) { if (!hit) { continue; } if (hit.rigidbody) { hit.rigidbody.AddExplosionForce(5000.0f, explosionPos, 100.0f); } } } } Even though the blast effect appears, the asteroids are not affected at all.   Hi all, a question bounces in my head from some time. Copyright laws are different by nation to nation, but generally which is the border line to break a copyright? Suppose to make a game that is very similar to an other come out in the past, e.g. a Pacman clone or a Space Invaders clone, but nothing from original titles are grabbed and maybe they're not made in 2d, but in 3d. The titles aren't "Pacman clone - the return" or "Space Invaders - they did it again", and not also "Pocman" or "Space Evaders" (maybe this last could be fun for some "creative financers" that need to escape from earth :D). Finally suppose to call these some thing like "Popcorn, fruit and ghosts" (or the acronym: "PFG") and "Kill all enemy" (or the acronym: "KAE"). In this case (not grab- all self-made) and no references to original titles, but with a game that feels very similar to "ispiration ones"... they could be sold to somewhere like "Valve's Steam"?   2010 has been a very good year for me and I wanted to create a list and thank everyone for what they have done for me.  I also wanted to thank everyone for reading and subscribing to my blog. It is hard to believe that people actually want to read what I write. I feel like I owe a huge thanks to everyone listed below. Looking back upon 2010, I feel that I’ve grown as a developer and you are part of that reason. Sometimes we get caught up in day to day work and forget to give thanks to those that helped us along the way. The list below is mine, it includes people and companies. This list is obviously not going to include everyone that has helped, just those that have stood out in my mind. When I think back upon 2010, their names keep popping up in my head. So here goes, in no particular order.  People Dave Campbell – For everything he has done for the Silverlight Community with his Silverlight Cream blog. I can’t think of a better person to get recognition at the Silverlight FireStarter event. I also wanted to thank him for spending several hours of his time helping me track down a bug in my feedburner account. Victor Gaudioso – For his large collection of video tutorials on his blog and the passion and enthusiasm he has for Silverlight. We have talked on the phone and I’ve never met anyone so fired up for Silverlight. Kunal Chowdhury – Kunal has always been available for me to bounce ideas off of. Kunal has also answered a lot of questions that stumped me. His blog and CodeProject article have green a great help to me and the Silverlight Community. Glen Gordon – I was looking frantically for a Windows Phone 7 several months before release and Glen found one for me. This allowed me to start a blog series on the Windows Phone 7 hardware and developing an application from start to finish that Scott Guthrie retweeted.  Jeff Blankenburg – For listening to my complaints in the early stages of Windows Phone 7. Birmingham .NET Users Group / Silverlight Nights User Group – It takes a lot of time to put together a user group meeting every month yet it always seems to happen. I don’t want to name names for fear of leaving someone out but both of these User Groups are excellent if you live in the Birmingham, Alabama area. Just make note that the textboxes have the same name as the property they are going to display. Yea, yea, I know. I’m displaying unit price as a textbox instead of a label, but that’s beside the point (and trust me, this will not be how it’ll look on the production site!!). The way my controller works is that initially two dummy products are added to the basked object and the Totals are calculated based on what products were added in what quantities and their respective unit price. So when the page loads in edit mode, where the user can change the quantity and hit the submit button. In the ‘post’ version of the action method, the Totals get recalculated and the new total will be displayed on the screen. Now I run the app, I see two products with the totals section below them. The ‘post’ version of the Index method gets called and I had put a break-point on line 32 in the above snippet. When I hovered my mouse on the ‘basked’ object, happily assuming that the object would be all bound and ready for use, I was surprised to see both basket.Products and basket.Totals were null. Huh? A little research and I found out that the reason the DefaultModelBinder could not do its job is because of a naming mismatch on the input controls. What I mean is that when you have to bind to a custom .net type, you need more than just the property name. You need to pass a qualified name to the name property of the input control. Once again I went: ‘Hmm.. time for more research’. Somehow, I feel this is kinda ‘clunky’ way of doing things. Seems like people at MS felt in a similar way and offered us a much cleaner way to solve this issue. The simple solution is that instead of using a Textbox, we can either use a TextboxFor or an EditorFor helper method. This one directly spits out the name of the input property as ‘Products[0].ID and so on. Cool right? I totally fell for this and changed my UI to contain EditorFor helper method. At this point, I ran the application, changed the quantity field and pressed the submit button. Of course my basket object parameter in my action method was correctly bound after these changes. I let the app complete the rest of the lines in the action method. When the page finally rendered, I did see that the quantity was changed to what I entered before the post. But, wait a minute, the totals section did not reflect the changes and showed the old values. My status: COMPLETELY PUZZLED! But still when I passed this basket object, it ended up showing the old totals values only. I began playing a bit with the code and my first guess was that the input controls got their values from the ModelState object. For those who don’t know, the ModelState is a temporary storage area that ASP.NET MVC uses to retain incoming attempted values plus binding and validation errors. Also, the fact that input controls populate the values using data taken from: Previously attempted values recorded in the ModelState["name"].Value.AttemptedValue Explicitly provided value (<%= Html.TextBox("name", "Some value") %>) ViewData, by calling ViewData.Eval("name") FYI: ViewData dictionary takes precedence over ViewData's Model properties – read more here. These two indicators led to my guess. It took me quite some time, but finally I hit this post where Brad brilliantly explains why this is the preferred behavior. This enables the values to be read from the model directly and not from the ModelState. I have been having residual package issues which have been giving me trouble trying to reconfigure xserver-xorg-lts-raring. • Adding partitions to dual boot on Windows

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 along side Windows 7 on an HP mini 210 netbook. I have down loaded an iso image OK and got the installation program working but I am having problems with partitioning. I want to keep my Windows installation intact so I am following the 'Other' installation route. I have managed to shrink the main Windows partition down to 50GB leaving 250GB free space but I can't find a way of adding any extra partitions for Ubuntu. The free space gets listed by the installer as 'unusable' but on the graphic at the top its called 'free space'. If I select this and click 'Install Now' I get an error message: 'No root file system is defined'. I have tried clicking the Add, Change Delete and New Partition table buttons with the unusable partition selected and nothing happens. How do I define a root mount point when I do not have any Linux partitions?

• Linux DD command partition -to- partition

  I just used the DD command to copy the contents of one partition over to another partition on another drive, like this: dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sdb2 bs=4096 conv=noerror sda2 partition was 66GB and sdb2 was 250GB. I read that by doing this the extra space on the drive I am copying to will be wasted, is this true? I wasn't worried about loosing the extra space for the time being however, I just ran: sudo kill -USR1 (PID) to view the current status of DD and it has written over 66GB of data, will it continue to write data until it gets to 250GB? If so, is there a way to stop the process without corrupting it as waiting for it to write blank space seems like a waste of time.

  Ok so i own a toshiba laptop , and the thing is my hdd went bad,but i had a usb flash drive with i live cd Ubuntu on it. Now i dont have and hdd plugged in my laptop im only with a flashdrive. My question is how much memory does this live cd support cause my flash drive is 32 gigs and after about 1.5 gigs of downloads a screen shows up and tells me that i dont have enough space left. the other thing is i dont have money to get a hdd right now so i wanna use this flash drive for now but can i somehow customize the cd thru the live edition so i could have programs that i need after restarts i tried with Customization Live Cd but when i run it , it stops and in my terminal it says could not execute not enough space. So if anyone can tell me what can i do with this problem im having with space on my live Usb ubuntu.

You may have DBCC in place, and all that fun stuff. But if you haven't restored the database, what do you have? You don't know. The trick is, restoring databases takes up a heck of a lot of space on your servers. To test all your productions backups, you'd need a system with as much space as production. unless.. Ever heard of SQL Virtual Restore? Check it out. With this, you answer Mike's questions and validate your backups without having to have twice the amount of space. That's a win, and we all know, winning is better than losing.

• host and share files in my hosting

  I currently have a domain+hosting with unlimited hosting space for our website. On the other hand, I use Dropbox to share our organizational files and photos between about 10 users. The thing is that sharing photos uses too much space for what a free Dropbox account offers. So I am thinking of taking advantage of my hosting space, but using FTP seems not to be ideal for users who are not too skilled with computers. In addition, it doesn't handle versions in case some user makes a mess of it. And using a public FTP to upload and giving them only download permission doesn't seem a good idea as I am only the CTO. So what I want is basically to implement a local Dropbox for a few users, but I'd prefer something that is not too complex to install/mantain. Thank you a lot.

  When coping a file greater than 64kB from an Ubuntu server to a CIFS mounted windows share, most of the data is copied, but it seems the last chunk doesn't get copied. The size doesn't match, and the md5 check sums don't match. It carries over from my prose writing where a paragraph can have multiple sentences and so it is very common to follow a period with a space, and I end up doing that automatically for every period (or when it comes to programming- semicolon). It started out as something automatic, but I'm so used to this by now that if I miss the space it actually bothers me and I end up returning to that line to input it. What are some of your programming idiosyncrasies?

• Reasonable size for "filesystem reserved blocks" for non-OS disks?

  When creating a file system ( mkfs ...) the file system reserves 5% of the space for its own use because, according to man tune2fs: Reserving some number of filesystem blocks for use by privileged processes is done to avoid filesystem fragmentation, and to allow system daemons, such as syslogd(8), to continue to function correctly after non-privileged processes are prevented from writing to the filesystem. But with large drives 5% is quite a lot of space. I have 4x1.5 TB drives for data storage (the OS runs on a separate disk), so the default setting would reserve 300 GB, which is an order of magnitude more than the the entire OS drive. The reserved space can be tweaked, but what is a reasonable size for a data disk? Can I set it to zero, or could that lead to issues with fragmentation?

• Safely dual-boot XP and Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop?

  My netbook Acer AOD255 has three primary partitions in it by default - PQSERVICE/recovery (NTFS), Android x86 1.6 (FAT32), and the main WinXP Home SP3 (pre-installed, dual-booted with Android from inside WinXP). I was able to resize all three partitions to give 9GB of unallocated space for a future Ubuntu installation, which can already be booted from a pendrive. Here's my problems: 1.) I don't know how to install Ubuntu on that 9GB space (even if I create an unformatted partition for it) 2.) I currently have no means of reinstalling my XP, or backing-up any data (so I don't want to accidentally wipe out my whole HDD at all) 3.) I want XP and Ubuntu to be dual-booted thru a boot manager like GRUB or something more practical (but google searches confuse me) 4.) When I boot to try Ubuntu, GParted displays my whole drive as unallocated space. It also says "can't have overlapping partitions" or something.

• Ubuntu installer thinks my drive is empty, does not see windows paritions.

  Hello, I am trying to install Ubuntu10.10 64bit. I just installed Windows 7 64bit moments ago. My drive is currently partitioned like so: 100MB Boot partition (automatically made by windows 7 installer) 390GB Windows partition ~1.6TB free space When I go through the Ubuntu installer it does not give me the option to install alongside another operating system. My only options are to use the entire disk or to specify partitions manually. When I chose to specify partitions manually it tells me that the drive is all free space! Windows is still booting and behaving normally, and I had not doing anything in Windows yet (had simply installed, booted for first time, then immediately restarted). I am even able to mount the windows partition within Ubuntu Live CD, and see it in the disk viewer (not gparted). Gparted in Ubuntu Live CD again reports no partitions, all free space. Not sure what to do :S. I have installed Windows7 alongside Ubuntu countless times, even Ubuntu 10.10. Thank you very much for your help :).

  Now I'm already implement the setup build rules which the building could move by unit grid width and height. But the validation detection is poor efficiency. The algorithm cost me 10~12(ms) in average when I move the building. Here is my approach to that: 1.Basic Grid, it is a two dimensional array. Grid[row][column], so that I can save info for each grid. Like whether is it in occupied or excluded. 2.Exclude Space, this is a space which limit same building numbers in space.

• Increasing Ubuntu (12.04) partition size

  I'm running a dual boot Windows XP/Ubuntu system, and I'd like to increase the size of the Ubuntu partition at the expense of the Windows partition. I've already shrunk the Windows partition, creating a large unallocated space between the Windows and Ubuntu partitions (See linked GParted screenshot). http://s17.postimage.org/5ppnrrnot/GParted.png I'd like to move my Ubuntu partition to the start of the unallocated space, and then increase its size to encompass all of the unallocated space. Once I try and move it (Using the GParted live cd), it tells me to expect big GRUB issues since I'm moving my Ubuntu partition's start sector. What is it that I should expect, and how do I handle it? • Installing ubuntu 12.04 LTS alongwith windows xp in two different HDDs

  I have two HDDs. First HDD has four partitions with Windows XP in the first partition Second has two partitions and 15GB unallocated space. I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in the second HDD by using Unallocated space. I tried for 6 times. Each time it got installed, but after first restart, it directly boots Windows XP in the first HDD and no boot options appear. Every time I found that the Ubuntu installation used unallocated space and made two partitions one EXT3 and other Linux swap. I don't know what went wrong. During Installation, Ubuntu detected Windows XP. Can anybody help me?

I didn't know this when I was allocating space to my partitions during my initial install of Ubuntu. As a result I ran out of space on my boot partition. • How do I build a matrix to translate one set of points to another?

  I've got 3 points in space that define a triangle. I've also got a vertex buffer made up of three vertices, that also represent a triangle that I will refer to as a "model". How can I can I find the matrix M that will transform vertex in my buffer to those 3 points in space ? For example, let's say my three points A, B, C are at locations: A.x = 10, A.y = 16, A.z = 8 B.x = 12, B.y = 11, B.z = 1 C.x = 19, C.y = 12, C.z = 3 given these coordinates how can I build a matrix that will translate and rotate my model such that both triangles have the exact same world space ? That is, I want the first vertex in my triangle model to have the same coordinates as A, the second to have the same coordinates as B, and same goes for C. nb: I'm using instanced rendering so I can't just give each vertex the same position as my 3 points. I have a set of three points defining a triangle, and only three vertices in my vertex buffer.
