In terms that an OOP programmer would understand (without any functional programming background), what is a monad? What problem does it solve and what are the most common places it's used?

  • PHP Extended CHM Manual Gone?

    - by Alix Axel
I'm sorry for maybe posting a question that may not be directly related to programming but where can I find an up to date version of the Extended PHP Manual (the one with the user comments) for download? The usual URL (http://www.php.net/docs-echm.php) seems to redirect to the (http://www.php.net/download-docs.php), was it discontinued?

  • Which European conference is the best equivalent of OSCON?

    - by smci
Looking for a large European developer/software conference, open-source-friendly, programming-language-neutral, platform-neutral, vendor-neutral. Any recommendations? apparently there briefly used to be a Euro OSCON (2004-2006? what happened?) some good language/app-specific ones like EuroPython, EuroSciPy, DjangoCon European BarCamps seem kind of fragmented, esp. for an English-speaking audience anything bigger or better? If there isn't anything, I wonder if O'Reilly would resurrect Euro OSCON.

    - by Oden
Hey, Im really interested in the way of using lamda functions. Does it make sense to use them in a high-level programming language? If yes, why? Is this really just a function embedded in a function, (Like this) or is there more behind?

  • Learning Lisp - Why ?

    - by David
I really feel that I should learn Lisp and there are plenty of good resources out there to help me do it. I'm not put off by the complicated syntax, but where in "traditional commercial programming" would I find places it would make sense to use it instead of a procedural language. Is there a commercial killer-app out there that's been written in Lisp ?

  • convert any language into PHP sourcecode

    - by dreftymac
Question: Is there any such thing as a programming language (other than an esoteric language such as BrainF@#$, or the languages PHP or VB) that you can "compile" into non-obfuscated PHP source code? Rationale: Swip wants to generate ordinary PHP code because it is so ubiquitous for the types of projects swip wants to do. Unfortunately swip would like to actually avoid writing PHP -- strange but true! Swip is crazy enough to want to generate PHP source code without having to type any PHP into Swip's editor.

  • Sending the array of arbitrary length through a socket. Endianness.

    - by Negai
Hi everyone, I'm fighting with socket programming now and I've encountered a problem, which I don't know how to solve in a portable way. The task is simple : I need to send the array of 16 bytes over the network, receive it in a client application and parse it. I know, there are functions like htonl, htons and so one to use with uint16 and uint32. But what should I do with the chunks of data greater than that? Thank you.

But I am asking if anyone knows another "StackcOverflow"-like site, but which is mainly concerned about Machine Learning and AI? BTW: I have asked this question after nearly a week without an answer for Question

  • Learning Objective-C. Using Xcode 3.2.1. What is error: Program received signal: “EXC_ARITHMETIC”.

    - by derry
I am learning Objective-C using Stephen Kochan's excellent book "Programming in Objective-C 2.0". I am new also to Xcode. So far all my exercises have worked fine, but when I run program 7.6 FractionTest on page 153 I get the console message "Program received signal: "EXC_ARITHMETIC". The status shows that the program succeeded, but I don't see any output. Can anybody suggest what I might be doing wrong?

  • Languages for implementing decision trees

    - by Shailesh Tainwala
What would be a good choice of programming language in which to implement a decision tree? The results of the implementation will be for personal use only, so no need to consider ability to publish etc. I have heard that Octave is a good option, can anyone explain why a matrix based language is recommended for implementing decision trees?

  • Does Lua support Unicode?

    - by TimK
Based on the link below, I'm confused as to whether the Lua programming language supports Unicode. http://lua-users.org/wiki/LuaUnicode It appears it does but has limitations. I simply don't understand, are the limitation anything big/key or not a big deal?
