Real performance of node.js

I've got a question concerning node.js performance. There is quite lot of "benchmarks" and a lot of fuss about great performance of node.js. But how does it stand in real world? Not just process empty request at high speed. If someone could try to compare this scenario: Java (or equivalent) server running an application with complex business logic between receiving request and sending response. How would node.js deal with it? If there was need for a lot of JavaScript processing on server side, is node.js really so fast that it can execute JavaScript, and stand a chance against more heavyveight competitors?

Level design - Are games development degrees worth it? [on hold]

I want to go into Level design or Environment design and wondering if degrees are at all worth it for this area, as long as you have a good portfolio. I'm currently on a "Computing and Games Development" course and I feel like dropping out because I am not enjoying it. It's mostly computer based, which I'm not doing that great at, and little games Dev. But I don't know what do to... I do already have some high level education with a "Level 3 extended diploma". Color indication in Visual Studio 2012

This post will be a part of Visual Studio 2012 series. Before some days Microsoft has released the release candidate version of Visual Studio 2012. Today I got installed Visual Studio 2012 and once I loaded the visual studio 2012 first things I noticed that there is purple color blank strip is there at bottom. After doing some R and D on internet I have found that it is used for the different indication. The purple color indicates that there is no project loaded now. Once you open the project this line will be of blue color like below. Once you run and F5 and debug it, the color will change to orange like below . Isn’t that great? A simple color indicator for each mode in visual studio 2012. Stay tuned for the more. I am going to put some more post about Visual Studio 2012. Till then happy programing

11.10 runs really choppy and slow, but not if I choose "Gnome Classic"

I'd like to use Unity with Ubuntu 11.10, but everything from Unity runs really choppy and slow. I have an ATI graphics card and I have installed the drivers through "Additional Drivers". The drivers work, as I can play 3d games flawlessly. When I drag the mouse box around or drag windows around, it is really choppy. I previously had Ubuntu 10.10 and everything worked fine. I installed gnome 3 on 11.10 and it does the same thing Unity does, very choppy and slow graphics. However, if I choose Gnome Classic, everything is fine. I can drag the mouse box all around with no problems. I can drag windows around and it looks and feels great. Is this a bug with Unity? Are others experiencing this? Or is there something I can do to fix this?

Fixed Bid vs. T&M – Take 2

Time & Materials or T&M) which itself was a response to Mark Richman’s (@mrichman) post on why he never bills by the hour (fixed bid). Each article has good arguments, and I encourage you to read them both and choose the best approach for you. As for me, my experience parallels Brent’s and I historically have leaned toward the Time & Materials model.

When will microsoft release IE9? [closed]

I was one of those people early on to try their IE9 beta, and it was terribly buggy. It still does function horribly. IMO any windows release after 5(2k,nt,xp) absolutely sux the life out of my resources compared to RPM linux(opensuse), until at least service pack 2. MS is trying to push HTML5/CSS3 and they cannot pass the Acid 3 test. I am wondering when IE9 will become functional. I am a big supported of MS applications. I have a great amount of adoration for IIS7 because they have support for CGI/PHP. Is IE9 going to be released before 2012?

Microsoft LifeCam Audio Issue

Running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit on a computer with an Intel core i5 processor, 4GB RAM and a NVIDIA 450GTS Graphics card. I am trying to set up Skype with my webcam. So far everything works almost perfectly, however my Microsoft LifeCam-VX700 v2.0 audio does not work correctly. The audio feed is just static/white noise. I have checked the hardware using windows and it worked perfectly there. The video works great in Ubuntu. It is just the audio that is the problem. What can I do to rectify this problem?

How much server bandwidth does an average RTS game require per month?

My friend and I are going to write a multiplayer, multiplatform RTS game and are currently analyzing the costs of going with a client-server architecture. The game will have a small map with mostly characters, not buildings (think of DotA or League of Legends). The authoritative game logic will run on the server and message packet sizes will be highly optimized. We'd like to know approximately how much server bandwidth our proposed RTS game would use on a monthly basis, considering these theoretical constants: 100 concurrent users maximum 8 players maximum per game 10 ticks per second Bonus: If you can tell us approximately how much server RAM this kind of game would use that would also help a great deal. Will a programming professional certificate from a university enhance my resume/prospect for being hired?

I'm planning to take up an Online Certification in web programming or .NET programming from the University of Illinois through O'Reilly (see link) to keep busy this summer. Will that help me get a great job? I've heard some say that certifications will give you a cutting edge. I've heard others say that it doesn't really matter. What do you think? Is there a way to group 2 or 3 gui windows so that they don't get lost behind other open windows?

For instance floating panels and main window in Gimp are independent windows. If I change focus to a full window (e.g. Firefox by doing Alt-Shift) and go back to the main Gimp window I don't get back the floating panels also (I have to change to them as well in order to see them). It would be great if the 3 windows can be "tied" (or linked) together in order that they don't get lost behind other open windows when I change back to (make active window) any of them? I think this configuration (if it exists) should show itself more obviously in the gnome environment. This question seems to address the same problem but it doesn't seem to be accurately answered.

I work as an SDET (SDE in Test) in an area with lots of great technical companies, and would like to have a better understanding of how different companies do testing. I have three sub-questions: Who would I get in contact with to set up informational interviews at a company that I'd like to learn about? How can I make sure the time is productive? And, how do I keep the interview from being a burden to the employee(s) whom I speak with?

Cannot Update through Manager or Terminal/ Software Center Does Not Work

I installed Tor a few days ago via the terminal. I deleted some hashtags in the gedit polipo, and changed my proxy settings in chrome, but was unable to make it work and have since changed all of it back. I then downloaded the Tor browser bundle which works great, but ever since then have been unable to download updates or new software. The update manager says to "check internet connection" and the software center displays a mostly blank screen under apps like "rhythmbox" and just says "available from main source" when I click on "use this source" a refresh symbol appears on the upper right corner of the software center for a split second, and then nothing happens. The app does not download and isn't available in the dash. When I try via the terminal it says it's unable to connect to my ip address. I tried changing the server and unchecking all the repository options for software sources, all to no avail. WHAT DID I DO?????

Skype no sound on Kubuntu 13.10

I just performed a fresh install of Kubuntu 13.10 on my machine. Everything is working great except for Skype. I cannot get any form of audio playback in Skype. In the sound settings panel I get a bunch of different sound sources, none of which work! At the moment I have set it to "sysdefault (unknown)" I installed it using the deb package found on the official website. My phonon backend is using phonon-gstreamer. Lenovo Y460 heats up with Ubuntu 11.10

I'm new with Ubuntu and I'm enjoying my experience with Ubuntu 11.10 on my Lenovo ideapad Y460. I'm dual booting Ubuntu with Windows 7 64 bit. It's great using Ubuntu, however I noticed that my laptop heats up rather quickly when I use Ubuntu. Does this have to do with drivers? I have Nvidia GT 425M graphics, but I don't know if this information is relevant. My fans are just not working right as they do in Windows 7. Did I miss installing something or what am I doing wrong?

Why are more programmers not freelance these days? [closed]

Leaving the whole pie to only a few of them, amplifying the huge differences between the two status. Pay is a (huge) one, not having to do overtime is another. I leave the question open to hopefully get many great answers on all the different subjects that affects that feeling and decision not to go. EDIT: While this question is really global, I'll be interested in any studies, facts, articles, opinions regarding local markets such as US, India and even Australia in which I'm in love with. Authorization pop-up requested by http://localhost:51675 every time I run Firefox

Using Ubuntu 10.04. Whenever I run Firefox I get a pop up requesting authorisation. It says 'a user name and password are being requested by http://localhost:51675. The site says "server" I have tried all passwords I know and nothing is accepted. If I click 'cancel' it disappears but re-appears after about 5 minutes. This whole 'experience' is accompanied by a great deal of hard disc activity. Can anyone help with this?

Why should a class be anything other than "abstract" or "final/sealed"

After 10+ years of java/c# programming, I find myself creating either: abstract classes: contract not meant to be instantiated as-is. final/sealed classes: implementation not meant to serve as base class to something else. I can't think of any situation where a simple "class" (i.e. neither abstract nor final/sealed) would be "wise programming". Why should a class be anything other than "abstract" or "final/sealed" ? SQL Auto Close Options

Found an interesting thing that others have run across but it is the first time I’ve seen it. A customer emailed to say that the SQL 2008 db that I had helped him with seemed to be going into recovery mode on a regular basis while watching the SQL Management Studio screen. Needless to say he was a bit nervous and about to take some drastic steps. Eventually he found that the Auto Close option was set to true. When this is set to true, the database automatically closes all connections and unlocks the mdf file after 300 milliseconds. When a new connection is made it spins backup… Great for xcopy deployment on a client machine but not a multi-user server based application. So the warning… if you have started a database with SQL express and then move it to a production SQL server, make sure you check that the Auto Close option is set to false. See options screen below:
