• How can I reference only a portion of a TextArea's htmlText block?

  I have a number of very poor-quality pdf documents that look like 80's photocopies, which I'm rebuilding in Flash (Flex Builder 3 MXML application), representing paragraphs of text in TextAreas so that selected portions can be bold or italic, or whatever I need. I need a way to apply toolTips or event listeners to individual words within the block of text to link those words to a glossary. I'm perfectly happy to create a definition panel that is populated and made visible with a mouseOver, but don't know how to do it to just a portion of the text. Is there a good / clean / easy way to do this?

This one appears to have a scroller to the right side of the screen and the footer gets sticky to the bottom. But i guess this is a bit different to most of the Sticky footers you're talking about in other threads. • Stupid automatic assembly copy problem in Visual Studio 2008 - WTH am I doing wrong?

  My lazier side has apparently gotten the best of me. When I started to develop with .NET under VS2008 recently, I was very happy to see that all of the dependencies automagically got copied to my application's bin/debug folder upon compilation. This is fantastic. I never even bothered to look into how / why this is done. Yesterday, I decided to make another plugin very similar to an existing one, so I literally copied the folder and all of project files, then renamed the folder and manually edited the project files and file references. I also changed the assembly's GUID. Everything builds fine, but this particular assembly is never copied into my application's bin/debug folder. It is marked as a dependency of my app as well. What did I miss here?

• Reading programming tutorials while at work

  I work in a call centre and have been told by my manager that when there are no calls coming through they're happy for me to read stuff on the internet. There is a net filter in place but I can access SO from work which is always handy. I'm searching for articles that will make me a generally better programmer. I code in Python but combine it with Postgres and JS quite a lot if that helps. I'm currently reading Dive into python3 but I fear it won't last me much longer and would really like to expand my programming ability.

• Get Array value by string of keys

  Hello, i'm building a template engine for my next project, which is going great. It replaces {tag} with a corresponding value. But, i want {tag[0][key]} to be replaced as well. All i need to know is how to get the value, if i have the string representation of the array and key, like this: $arr = array( 0=>array( 'key'=>'value' ), 1=>array( 'key'=>'value2' ) ); $tag = 'arr[0][key]'; echo($$tag); This is a very simple version of the problem, i hope you understand it. • Rails, making certain multiparameter attributes optional?

  Is there a method already part of Rails for making certain parameters option when part of a multiparameter attribute, for example say I'm prompting a user for their birthday, when saved the has may look like this: "birthday(2i)"=>"8", "birthday(3i)"=>"17", "birthday(1i)"=>"1980"}, ... But the issue arises when say I want to allow the user to just provide their month and day, making the year optional, how would this work being a datetime object, I'm assuming you can't do this as a date object... but any ideas would be helpful. • PHP/CSS issue, one account has a fine style, the other is weird

  Hello there, I am currently having the above issue, where on a CMS called phpVMS a CSS displaying front page works fine on the first account, but does not on any other user accounts. This only applies to the frontpage, and all of the tags seem to be closed. The top half of the picture is how it should display and how it displays for user GSM1001. The bottom half is for users GSM1002 upwards. I am really puzzled and I'd appreciate any suggestions. I am happy to post snippets of the code here or on jsFiddle if you require to see it. • How to get rid of bogus changes in git?

  I'm a happy user of PortableGit 1.7.0.2. Today I wanted to pull a project changes from GitHub.com repository, so I did git pull. It failed with the following message: error: Your local changes to 'main.rb' would be overwritten by merge. Aborting.. I didn't care about the local changes so I typed git reset --hard HEAD (git clean from here didn't help neither), but it didn't work. When asked for git status I was still able to see the file as modified. git diff showed me that each line of the file has been modified, while git diff -b showed no differences at all, so I guess this is a line ending issue. Which is strange because the code is only pushed from Windows machines. Anyway, the question is: how can I ignore the local, bogus changes and merge with the latest changes from the remote repository?

• What did I do wrong here when trying to unit test a class that references a web service

  So I had a class that referenced a class that referenced another class that called a web service. So I learn how to create an interface using partial classes. I inject the web service through the constructor. Then my unit test fails because I am newing up the actual web service in the second level of the class. So I end up modifying all three classes to pass the web service down through the constructor... was not happy :-( gave up.... what should I be doing in this case?

• Grails - showing page processing/render debug information in development mode

  I've been experimenting with Grails for the past two days and, so far, I'm really happy with it. Coming from Rails, the only thing I've really been missing here is the dev-mode debug information shown after the page has been served. I've tried the "debug" plugin but its not very useful as it only shows the total processing time. • How suitable is a DVCS for the corporate environment?

  I've been using SVN for some time now, and am pretty happy with how it works (but I can't say I'm an expert, and I haven't really done much with branches and merging). However an opportunity has arisen to put in some new practises on a new team and so I thought I'd take a look at DVCSs to see if it's worth making the jump. The company I work for is a pretty standard company where we all work in the same location (or sometimes at home) and we want to keep a central store of all code. My question is: if all you are doing with a DVCS is creating a central hub that everyone pushes their changes to, is there really any benefit to moving to a DVCS and its extra overheads in this sort of environment?

• Quick to develop web app in Java

  Hi all, I need to develop a basic web app very quickly (1 week) for a demo. My requirements are Java (I need to make use of existing Java libraries to access the relevant data) 2 screens One for static data view, maybe some search parameters Other for basic form entry No fancy AJAX required Ideally easy for a web designer to come in and tart it up as necessary, without having to rewrite everything My first stop was going to be to checkout Wicket as I've heard good things about it. I don't have the time right now to dive into anything heavy, which probably writes off JSF in my mind (I played with JSF1, steep learning curve which I've now slid back down). I'm happy to treat the result as throwaway so if there's a framework which starts of well but then doesn't scale up to bigger projects, that would be ok. Any suggestions appreciated on frameworks/approach.

• How can unit testing make parameter validation redundant?

  We have a convention to validate all parameters of constructors and public functions/methods. For mandatory parameters of reference type, we mainly check for non-null and that's the chief validation in constructors, where we set up mandatory dependencies of the type. The number one reason why we do this is to catch that error early and not get a null reference exception a few hours down the line without knowing where or when the faulty parameter was introduced. As we start transitioning to more and more TDD, some team members feel the validation is redundant. Uncle Bob, who is a vocal advocate of TDD, strongly advices against doing parameter validation. His main argument seems to be "I have a suite of unit tests that makes sure everything works". But I can for the life of it just not see in what way unit tests can prevent our developers from calling these methods with bad parameters in production code. Please, unit testers out there, if you could explain this to me in a rational way with concrete examples, I'd be more than happy to seize this parameter validation!

• How to I change the text location on my google map for map clusters in Fluster2?

  Hi, I'm using google maps to create a bunch of POI on a map. I'm using the Fluster2 library to cluster the POI together when there are too many in a certain location. This all works fine and I'm very happy but I would like to move where the fluster2 text is written so it matches my custom icon. ie: it has a marker with 5 written over it so that you know there are 5 poi under that cluster. Does anyone know how to change this or set the text to a specific location? Thanks The Net Duck

• How to to dump JS array... (boommarklet?)

  A page on a site I use is holding some of my data hostage. Once I have logged into the site and navigated to the right page, the data I need is in the array eeData[] - it is 720 elements long (once every 2 minutes of a given day). Rather than simulate the requests to the underlying stuff json supplier and since its only once a day, I am happy to simply develop a bookmarklet to grab the data - preferably as a XML or CSV file. Any pointers to sample code or hints would help. I found a bookmarklet here that is based on this script that does part of this - but I am not up to speed on any potential JS file IO to see if it is possible to induce a file "download" of the data, or pop it opn in a new window I can copy / paste.

• Put Raphael (SVG) canvas behind other divisions to make them clickable?

  I am using Raphael to create lines between divisions in an organization chart (or flow chart), but I need to be able to actually click on the divisions and content behind it. If I could make the canvas be behind the other elements, kind of like a background image, that would be idea. Is this possible? UPDATE: I found a solution. Raphael makes an SVG canvas that is absolutely positioned in my case. Absolute positions act as layers, and so to be on top of that layer, my content had to be absolutely positioned as well. If someone else has a better solution, I would be happy to hear it, though this is working fine.

  Like the title states, does anyone out there have a clear way to implement this type of functionality? Example: If you go to http://weewar.com, in their front page you noticed an ajax module that updates every second. However, all of the new items are added to the top of the list. My question is around that very same functionality. Does anyone have an easy and clear idea as to how one would implement this functionality? So far I have a method that initially creates the list, then another method is called in an interval that pulls the most recent data from the server.. However, I'm stuck with, how can I add the new dynamic node to the top of the list. If you can guide me to where I can find this information or give me an idea as to how I can implement this I will be very happy and grateful :) Thanks in advanced.

• Custom deleters for std::shared_ptrs

  Is it possible to use a custom deleter after creating a std::shared_ptr without using new? My problem is that object creation is handled by a factory class and its constructors & destructors are protected, which gives a compile error, and I don't want to use new because of its drawbacks. To elaborate: I prefer to create shared pointers like this, which doesn't let you set a custom deleter (I think): auto sp1 = make_shared<Song>(L"The Beatles", L"Im Happy Just to Dance With You"); Or I can create them like this, which does let met set a deleter through an argument: auto sp2(new Song, MyDeleterFunc); But the second one uses new, which AFAIK isn't as efficient as the top sort of allocation. Maybe this is clearer: is it possible to get the benefits of make_shared<> as well as a custom deleter? Would that mean having to write an allocator?

She wants to create one big image for each of these emails and I'm trying to steer her towards using the traditional header-content-footer method so the text within the content will be viewable when images are blocked. • Is it bad practice to use Reflection in Unit testing?

  During the last years I always thought that in Java, Reflection is widely used during Unit testing. Since some of the variables/methods which have to be checked are private, it is somehow necessary to read the values of them. I always thought that the Reflection API is also used for this purpose. Last week i had to test some packages and therefore write some JUnit tests. As always i used Reflection to access private fields and methods. But my supervisor who checked the code wasn't really happy with that and told me that the Reflection API wasn't meant to use for such "hacking". Instead he suggested to modifiy the visibility in the production code. Is it really bad practice to use Reflection? I can't really believe that

• How to Print reports in Silverlight 4

  I am wondering if there is anything built in to Silverlight, or possibly c# to allow for printing reports? I'd be happy with any number of methods: exporting files to a pdf format and printing from there, exporting as a text document of some sort and printing from there, or just simply showing the print dialog from the web application itself. I know there are ways to do this in C#, but the c# code-behind is different for many things in Silverlight applications and I can't seem to find anything that will work. • Best way to delay access to static web pages until services become available with J2EE

  I have a J2EE application front-ended by a bunch of GWT pages. When the server is starting up, it is possible that these static pages can be accessed before the services required to implement the GWT RPC calls (database etc) are available. I wondering what the best approach is to prevent a user accessing this static content before these services become available. For the purpose of this exercise, assume that there is an isInitialized() method somewhere. I am happy with either a page displaying an error message or simply refusing the connection.

  Hi folks, I'm thinking of adding a reputation system to a web application, the site is already being used so I'm trying to be careful about my choices. I'm developing in Django/Python, thought this would be important. Reputation is generated in all actions that contribute to the site, similar to Stackoverflow's system. I know there are literally millions of ways of implementing this, and this is why I feel quite lost. • How can we protect ourselves from other third parties installing DLLs with the same names as some of

  Our product includes several DLLs built from open source into files with default names as delivered by the open source developers. We're careful to install the files in our own directories and we carefully manage the search path (only for our processes) to keep the loader happy. Another developer -- a towering intellect -- decided it would be easier to install their own build of some of the same open source into C:\WINDOWS under the same default DLL filenames. Consequently, when we launch a process which depends on these open source DLLs, the system searches C:\WINDOWS before our directories and finds the DLLs installed by the other developer. And they are, of course, incompatible. Ideas which have occurred to me so far: rename all our DLLs to avoid the default names, which would only make it less likely we would encounter collisions load all our DLLs by full path so the loader captures their names into RAM and doesn't search anywhere else the next time they are requested For various reasons, neither of these options is palatable at the moment. What else can we do to defend ourselves against the towering intellects of the world?

• Zend Framework additional Get params with NGINX
