• SQL Joining Two or More from Table B with Common Data in Table A

  The real-world situation is a series of events that each have two or more participants (like sports teams, though there can be more than two in an event), only one of which is the host of the event. There is an Event db table for each unique event and a Participant db table with unique participants. They are joined together using a Matchup table. They look like this: Event EventID (PK) (other event data like the date, etc.) Participant ParticipantID (PK) Name Matchup EventID (FK to Event table) ParicipantID (FK to Participant) Host (1 or 0, only 1 host = 1 per EventID) What I'd like to get as a result is something like this: EventID ParticipantID where host = 1 Participant.Name where host = 1 ParticipantID where host = 0 Participant.Name where host = 0 ParticipantID where host = 0 Participant.Name where host = 0 ... Where one event has 2 participants and another has 3 participants, for example, the third participant column data would be null or otherwise noticeable, something like (PID = ParticipantID): EventID PID-1(host) Name-1 (host) PID-2 Name-2 PID-3 Name-3 ------- ----------- ------------- ----- ------ ----- ------ 1 7 Lions 8 Tigers 12 Bears 2 11 Dogs 9 Cats NULL NULL I suspect the answer is reasonably straightforward but for some reason I'm not wrapping my head around it. Alternately it's very difficult. :) I'm using MYSQL 5 if that affects the available SQL.

  With regards to the following statement: Select * From explorer.booking_record booking_record_ Inner Join explorer.client client_ On booking_record_.labelno = client_.labelno Inner Join explorer.tour_hotel tour_hotel_ On tour_hotel_.tourcode = booking_record_.tourrefcode Inner Join explorer.hotelrecord hotelrecord_ On tour_hotel_.hotelcode = hotelrecord_.hotelref Where booking_record_.bookingdate Not Like '0000-00-00' And booking_record_.tourdeparturedate Not Like '0000-00-00' And hotelrecord_.hotelgroup = "LPL" And Year(booking_record_.tourdeparturedate) Between Year(AddDate(Now(), Interval -5 Year)) And Year(Now()) My MySQL skills are certainly not up to scratch, the actual result set I wish to find is "a customer who has been to 5 or more LPL hotels in the past 5 years". So far I havent got as far as dealing with the count as I'm getting a huge number of results with some 250+ per customer. I assume this is to do with the way I'm joining tables. Schema wise the booking_record table contains a tour reference code, which links to tour_hotel which then contains a hotelcode which links to hotelrecord. This hotelrecord table contains the hotelgroup. The client table is joined to the booking_record via a booking reference and a client may have many bookings. If anyone could suggest a way for me to do this I'd be very grateful and hopefully learn enough to do it myself next time! I've been scratching my head over this one for a few hours now! • How can I use SQL to select duplicate records, along with counts of related items?

  I know the title of this question is a bit confusing, so bear with me. :) I have a (MySQL) database with a Person record. A Person also has a slug field. Unfortunately, slug fields are not unique. There are a number of duplicate records, i.e., the records have different IDs but the same first name, last name, and slug. A Person may also have 0 or more associated articles, blog entries, and podcast episodes. If that's confusing, here's a diagram of the structure: I would like to produce a list of records that match this criteria: duplicate records (i.e., same slug field) for people who also have at least 1 article, blog entry, or podcast episode. I have a SQL query that will list all records with the same slug fields: SELECT id, first_name, last_name, slug, COUNT(slug) AS person_records FROM people_person GROUP BY slug HAVING (COUNT(slug) > 1) ORDER BY last_name, first_name, id; But this includes records for people that may not have at least 1 article, blog entry, or podcast. Can I tweak this to fit the second criteria?

  I am using MySQL DB, working for Joomla, My requirement is tracking the activity like insert/update/delete on any table and store it in another audit table using triggers, i.e. I am doing Auditing. DB's table structure: Few tables dont have any PK nor auto increment key Flow of my script is : I fetch out all table from DB. I check whether the table have any trigger or not. If yes then it moves to check nfor next table and so on. If it does'nt find any trigger then it creates the triggers for the table, such that, -it first checks if the table has any primary key or not(for inserting in Tracking audit table for every change made) if it has the primary key then it uses it further in creation of trigger. if it doesnt find any PK then it proceeds further in creating the trigger without inserting any id in audit table Now here, My problem is I need the PK every time so that I can record the id of any particular table in which the insert/update/delete is performed, so that further i can use this audit track table to replicate in production DB.. Now as I haave mentioned earlier that I am not available with PK/auto-incremented in some table, then what should I do get the particular id in which change is done? please guide me...GEEKS!!!

  Every day I realize how much I love Visual Studio for .NET development.... but, I believe that Resharper, may hold a value that surpasses Visual Studio's (I am using VS 2005 for WPF/WCF development). I decided it would be great to compile a list of the most valuable tools for software development. These can be applications/plug-ins anything that you think holds GREAT value. Also, please explain the benefits of the tool that you are posting. Resharper: Intergrated Unit testing "Camel Hump" code auto completion Find "usings" (inverse of "Go to Deceleration") Code formating and member rearranging Assembly and namespace inclusion (based on your code) Check for common optimizations and possible bugs in code and suggests/rewrites the code for you (things like null checking, redundant delegate creation, inverting if statements, etc...); Tells you when code and be more generic (may suggest things like "use this interface instead" if your code never refers to something specific on an object) Helps you see code that is not being used and will clean any unused members. File structure view helps you jump around the regions of your file (this is really awesome and clean). Class searching (you can use things like camel humps) Asks you which partial file to open once you find a class. It also has it's own plugin support, so you can do things like FxCop, documentation and relfector (all free). This thing has so much I don't think I hit 10% of it yet :) [When I get time, I will try to add more... feel free to help me out]

• Querying calender events even if they do not have any for the day

  Hey everyone, i am trying to figure out a way of query my mysql server so that even if a company does not have anything posted for the day the user clicks on their logo, it still adds them to the list. That sounds a little confusing so let me try to explain it another way. Say i have 3 company's in my database: Comp1 Comp2 Comp3 And Comp1 & Comp3 have something for today on the calender but Comp2 does not. I still need it to populate and place that company on the page but have something along the lines of "nothing on the calender for today". The other 2 companys (Comp1 & Comp3) would show the calender posting for that day. This is the code i have right now: SELECT clientinfo.id, clientinfo.theCompName, clientinfo.theURL, clientinfo.picURL, clientinfo.idNumber, clientoffers.idNumber, clientoffers.theDateStart, clientoffers.theDateEnd FROM clientinfo, clientoffers WHERE clientinfo.accountStats = 'OPEN' AND clientinfo.idNumber = clientinfo.idNumber AND '2010-05-08' BETWEEN clientoffers.theDateStart AND clientoffers.theDateEnd GROUP BY clientinfo.idNumber ORDER BY clientinfo.theCompName ASC That executes just fine but for Comp2, it just places the calender info from Comp1 into it when it really doesn't have anything. The output looks like this: Comp1 | 2010-05-08 | this is the calender event 1 | etc etc Comp2 | 2010-05-08 | this is the calender event 1 | etc etc comp3 | 2010-05-09 | this is the calender event 2 | etc etc Any help would be great :o) David

• Ultra-grand super acts_as_tree rails query

  Right now I'm dealing with an issue regarding an intense acts_as_tree MySQL query via rails. The model I am querying is Foo. A Foo can belong to any one City, State or Country. My goal is to query Foos based on their location. My locations table is set up like so: I have a table in my database called locations I use a combination of acts_as_tree and polymorphic associations to store each individual location as either a City, State or Country. (This means that my table consists of the rows id, name, parent_id, type) Let's say for instance, I want to query Foos in the state "California". Beside Foos that directly belong to "California", I should get all Foos that belong every City in "California" like Foos in "Los Angeles" and "San Francisco". Not only that, but I should get any Foos that belong to the Country that "California" is in, "United States". I've tried a few things with associations to no avail. I feel like I'm missing some super-helpful Rails-fu here. Any advice?

  I have a form that jQuery tracks the onChage .change() event so when something is changed it runs a ajax request and i pass in the column, id, and the values in the url. Here i have the PHP code that should update the data. My question is now how do i build the mySQl string dynamically. and how do i echo back the changes/updates that where just changed on the db. • Database – Beginning with Cloud Database As A Service

  I love my weekend projects. Everybody does different activities in their weekend – like traveling, reading or just nothing. Every weekend I try to do something creative and different in the database world. The goal is I learn something new and if I enjoy my learning experience I share with the world. This weekend, I decided to explore Cloud Database As A Service – Morpheus. In my career I have managed many databases in the cloud and I have good experience in managing them. I should highlight that today’s applications use multiple databases from SQL for transactions and analytics, NoSQL for documents, In-Memory for caching to Indexing for search.  Provisioning and deploying these databases often require extensive expertise and time.  Often these databases are also not deployed on the same infrastructure and can create unnecessary latency between the application layer and the databases.  Not to mention the different quality of service based on the infrastructure and the service provider where they are deployed. Moreover, there are additional problems that I have experienced with traditional database setup when hosted in the cloud: Database provisioning & orchestration Slow speed due to hardware issues Poor Monitoring Tools High network latency Now if you have a great software and expert network engineer, you can continuously work on above problems and overcome them. However, not every organization have the luxury to have top notch experts in the field. Now above issues are related to infrastructure, but there are a few more problems which are related to software/application as well. Here are the top three things which can be problems if you do not have application expert: Replication and Clustering Simple provisioning of the hard drive space Automatic Sharding Well, Morpheus looks like a product build by experts who have faced similar situation in the past. The product pretty much addresses all the pain points of developers and database administrators. What is different about Morpheus is that it offers a variety of databases from MySQL, MongoDB, ElasticSearch to Reddis as a service.  Thus users can pick and chose any combination of these databases.  All of them can be provisioned in a matter of minutes with a simple and intuitive point and click user interface.  The Morpheus cloud is built on Solid State Drives (SSD) and is designed for high-speed database transactions.  In addition it offers a direct link to Amazon Web Services to minimize latency between the application layer and the databases. You are connecting to MySQL instance. Now you can create your objects just like you would create on your local box. You will have all the features of the Morpheus when you are working with your database. Dashboard While working with Morpheus, I was most impressed with its dashboard. • Few GUI problems with minimal install

  I installed a minimal Ubuntu with a complete functional GUI, but facing a few problems. nm-applet's icon won't show in the notification area, but I can connect to wired internet fine. I am not able to configure my wireless or VPN this way. gksu's authentication screen is different from the usual graphical authentication - the screen turns gray as usual, but there are more options like save password for this session or keyring. And most importantly, it won't accept my password no matter what. And lastly, Gwibber seems to install no matter what, but there's not a single package in my knowledge that I installed has anything related to Gwibber. I would welcome any help regarding these three issues. I did not mention what packages I installed, because the list is long, but I will do so if anyone requests. Thank you in advance!

• GUI Application Resolution from Text Mode OS

  I'm trying to turn a computer into a Linux thin client via Ubuntu. I have a Dell OptiPlex 755 loaded with Ubuntu 14.04 installed and fully patched. I've configured the OS to run in text mode and automatically launch the VMWare Horizon's client, which works. The issue is that when the Horizon client launches, its resolution is only 1/4 of the screen. I've played with the resolution settings in grub which appears to modify the text environment but not the application environment for Horizon's. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to increase the resolution for a GUI application launch from text mode so it's full screen. Thanks!

• Best gui toolkit to use for creating 3D board game

  I have created a board game using Java and Swing - using GridLayout and various other apis. It works properly but the UI looks very very simple. I would want couple of animations like tilting the GridLayoutat any angle. There are pawns on boxes of the GridLayout that I want to be animated when somebody clicks on it. I'm not sure of the right GUI toolkit to use for this. Swing repaint is possible to a limit and cannot be used for a lot of animation and graphics. And I realized after creating the game that Swing is probably not a good tool to create games. Could anybody suggest a better framework to use that I can use it in Eclipse with Java? I was thinking of JavaFX or tools like Adobe Flash or Adobe Air. Any suggestions please?

• sudo does not work in GUI after upgrade to 13.10

  On 2 completely different machines I have the same problem after upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10: All programs/task requiering sudo permissions (software updater, starting synaptic, installing programs, shutdown) do not start / execute. No gksu (or other) window comes up. Synaptic never shows, software updater pops up with a "you are not allowed to perform this action" message. All programs / task work when started from terminal with sudo, like "sudo synaptics" asks for my password, starts and works as expected. I am in the admin group which is liked in sudoers config (verified with visudo and getent group admin). Some link from GUI to gksu (or similar) is broken. Please help! Radim

• After 12.10, no GUI can authenticate for administration, such as Software Center

  I upgraded to 12.10, and now I can't use Software Center or Network Administration. It keeps giving me an authentication errors. When I check /var/log/auth.log, I see: Oct 31 21:10:45 mike polkit-agent-helper-1[4665]: pam_unix(polkit-1:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=1000 euid=0 tty= ruser=root rhost= user=root Oct 31 21:10:51 mike polkit-agent-helper-1[4667]: pam_unix(polkit-1:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=1000 euid=0 tty= ruser=root rhost= user=root I found a post which said to change my password, which I've done (both through the Ubuntu settings GUI tool, and through recovery mode. No avail. Any suggestions? TIA M

  In the past, I've developed more on the server side, so no big GUI/graphic programming topics have crossed my way so far. I'm switching a little bit to the mobile plattforms (iOS, android) and would like to gather more info on the visual/graphic side. Using the SDK controls/widgets isn't that challenging and I would love to get deeper into the view/presentation layer. Animations, drawing itself, probably OpenGL. Any books that would take me a little deeper in understanding how drawing actually works would be helpful.

The layout is very simple: it is a sales application with a centralized database and multiple clients. Each salesperson has GUI app installed on his/her laptop that should be able to connect to the database to retrieve data and upload data (i.e. register new orders). My question is the following: how should the communication between the client and the server be implemented? I doubt that connecting directly to the RDBMS is a good idea... Should I use web-services? XML-RPC? How to implement authentication and encode the data? Thanks for your advice!

• Export from EndNote into MySQL database

  I would like to export some records from an EndNote (reference management software) library and import into a MySQL database. Does anyone have any experience with this? I've tried creating custom EndNote "output styles" containing either comma-delimited values or even SQL code, but have had mixed results, either because EndNote filters out some characters (like `) or because EndNote doesn't (or I can't work out how to make it) escape text, which might include characters like ' and ". I realize this might be a bit off-topic but any help would be appreciated.

• Storing Twitter OAuth in MySQL

  I'm about to add a feature on my website that will post stuff to the users' twitter accounts. I read that storing an "OAuth" token is better than storing their usernames and passwords (which makes sense). What should I store in my MySQL database? The token, secret and username? Or just the token? What data type(s) would you use? How big are they? Thanks!

  I have two mysql queries: $sql = "SELECT * FROM content WHERE threadName LIKE '%$filter%' ORDER BY lastUpdated desc"; and $sql = "SELECT * FROM content ORDER BY lastUpdated desc"; The end result is to have all rows returned from a particular table 'content' but have those that match the variable $filter at the top. Is there either a single query that could combine these two or should I be using a JOIN?

• mysql server upgrade problem from 5.0 to 5.1

  Hi I have upgraded my mysql server from 5.0 to 5.1. But i am having a problem related to tables for InnoDB storage Engine. My default engine is InnoDB, So it is enabled in my server. But tables with InneDB engine are not displaying in phpmyadmin. Tables with MyISAM are displaying properly. and also i can't fire a query on the table with InnoDB Engine. Thanks Avinash
