• Laptop accessories for mobile warrior (light power adapter & case/bag)

  Lugging my X301 between work and home, I realized my laptop's accessories weigh more than the laptop itself! I'm ordering a 2nd AC power adapter so I don't even have to carry one at all, but I may as well get the lightest one possible. My X301 came with a pretty svelt 65W power adapter, but can anyone suggest a lighter power adapter or confirm the weights I've found below? mass vol dimensions W Model ---- ------- ----------- --- ------------------- 210g 149cm^3 108x46x30mm 65W Coolermaster [NA 65] 244g 189cm^3 140x75x18mm 65W ThermalTake [ADP65W0001] 260g 130cm^3 104x43x29mm 65W Lenovo (came with X301) 326g 198cm^3 145x76x18mm 95W Coolermaster [SNA 95] 330g 180cm^3 150x60x20mm 90W Kensington USB [K38030US] Apple's 60W power adapter seems much smaller/lighter than the PC products listed above, so I think a better PC power adapter could exist. There are much smaller 45W "netbook" adapters, but are these too weak for my X301? I would not mind if it just meant the battery couldn't charge while the laptop was on, but I am afraid there will be worse consequences. Also, I have decided to swap my Logitech Kinetik briefcase for a Tom Bihn Ristretto. Less protection, but much lighter, less bulky, and easier to carry. Any suggestions for better laptop cases/bags?

• No internet access when using static IP

  I have just upgraded to Windows 8.1, and after the upgrade process is finished, I can't connect to internet. I tried running the "Troubleshoot problems": It concluded that DHCP needs to be activated: I let it activate DHCP, and I got internet connection back. The problem is I want to set this PC to a certain IP address (the IP address that it has been using all this time). I am also using Hyper-V, which I suspect has something to do with this problem. After I regained internet connection, I tried running one of my Hyper-V VM. From inside the VM I can connect to internet. That VM has static IP address. I also noticed that in "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections", I usually have a network connection called vEthernet (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Virtual Switch). I didn't find it there after upgrade. How do I set my PC to a static IP while retaining internet access in Windows 8.1? EDIT I have managed to recreate vEthernet (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Virtual Switch) by unchecking Allow management operating system to share this network adapter in Hyper-V's Virtual Switch Manager and then checking it again. But when I changed the adapter to use static IP, it still can't connect to internet. • BSOD: PFN_LIST_CORRUPT and IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

  I built a desktop about a year ago that has, until a few weeks ago, been running without a hitch using Windows 7 Ultimate. Recently, the PC started occasionally rebooting with a blue screen indicating a "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT" error. Also, I've seen at least once the error IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I seem to remember temporarily connecting an internal DVD burner about the same time this happened. I burned a DVD for another machine and promptly removed the drive. Yesterday, I reformatted the drive and installed Win7 Ultimate x64. During the first install, the PFN_LIST_CORRUPT bluescreen reared its ugly head again. A second install attempt completed with no errors. The fact that this error happened during a clean install leads me to believe that this is not a driver or OS issue. I also ran the memory diagnostic from the Win7 32-bit install DVD. It completed both passes with no errors. Periodically, the screen will flicker, as if explorer or the video are resetting. In the event log, I see a series of 8 or so errors indicating that some services unexpectedly stopped, and were apparently reset. These include an HID service and some others (I don't have a list in front of me). The PC is a Phenom X2 3 Ghz with a 500GB Seagate drive, 4GB of Corsair XMS2 cm2x2048-6400c5c. Anyone know what would suddenly cause a couple of sticks of RAM to go bad?

• router only assigns small number of IPs

  Been having a problem with my router for a while now, might just be because it is really old but here's the problem: If a lot of computers are connected to my home network someone will get disconnected. They are assigned IPs and it seems like at a certain point (and I don't know how many) you either get assigned the same IP as someone else or something else is happening and you get disconnected - until i soft reset it and it works again which takes 30 secs. I'd say my tablet, my PC, my sisters iPad, 2 laptops and a netbook is the most that can be connected at one time so that is 6 but that should be fine. The only way I know this is the problem is because I turned on my tablet and I was online on my PC, got disconnected but my tablet was still connected, this is just after i turned the tablet on so I know my router is having difficulty with IPs, it is like it assigned the same IP to the tablet which then clashed with my desktop and knocked me off. I see that sometimes the following solves it as well so I wrote a batch file with a menu to execute these commands as I have to do it so often. ipconfig /release ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /renew Any ideas? Or shall I just get a new router as this one is old and maybe can't handle giving out that many IPs? Cheers!

• Coffee spilled inside computer, damaged hard drive

  Today coffee spilled over my table, and some of it (very less) reached the PC case placed under the table. I think little bit of it got inside the PC case through the front. As that happened the fan started running very fast and made noise. I tried to restart to see if it becomes fine, but the computer didn't start again. First it gave an error of "Alert! Air temperature sensor not detected" and didn't start. Next I tried again multiple times of starting the computer but then it gave some memory error. I was not able to start the computer. Incase there's a problem in hard disk or something related to memory, is there any way we can extract our work or data? I am scared if I am not able to extract my work in case some problem occurs like that. What options would I have? Help!! EDIT: I have attached the photo here and you can see the area spilt in red circle. The hard drive electronics have been affected and internal speaker may also have been affected. Any advise on cleaning and if hard drive can work? EDIT 2: Are there any professional services offered to extract data from blemished hard disk, like this one, in case I am not able to run it personally?

  I have never assembled a PC before, although I have taken an old one apart and replaced a few parts in others here and there so I have (very) limited experience. I have been looking to make a pc and here are the parts I might buy: Foxconn P45AL Intel P45 (Socket 775) DDR2 Motherboard (with onboard sound I believe) Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 OC 768MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card Already have 2 1gb sticks of dual channel DDR2 memory Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 4MB-cache Processor Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache Hard Drive Antec Dark Fleet Series DF10 Gaming Enclosure – Black I already have monitor, mouse, keyboard and DVD/CD drive Akasa Freedom Power 1000W Modular Power Supply I have never done this before so feel free to laugh at me for getting something obvious wrong, forgetting a vital component etc. but is all of this compatible? And have I gone overkill on the PSU, if so, please recommend one. Thanks in advance, ell. • Does a mini PCIe SSD fit into a Acer Aspire One?

  Question: What, if any, mini PCIe SSDs fit into the mini PCIe slot of the Acer Aspire one AOD250? Info: I have an Aspire One and I've been considering loading it with an SSD. The mini PCIe drives fascinate me and so I want to try that approach. Also they tend to be cheaper and not much slower. (at least not on Read time which matters more for a netbook) But I've heard that some times computers don't support certain mini PCIe cards. And I was wondering if anyone knew about the Aspire One? I tried asking Acer tech support, but they didn't know jack and spent the whole time informing that I would have to support my Ubuntu install on my own, which I was. Anyway. • Office 2010 Trusted Locations not working after restart

  In Excel 2010, on Windows XP, I am unable to open files - through the open dialog box - from a network drive. The sever has already been added to the Trusted Locations and now most security settings turned down or off. Excel will show "Downloading ..." on that status bar and a progress bar which doesn't progress. We have left Excel sitting in this state for 30+ minutes and no change. A similar problem occurs when saving files to network shares. If we use explorer to navigate to the files and double click them they open flawlessly. No add-ins are active. We also have this problem in Word 2010, but the server was not initially in the Trusted Locations. I added it and it worked until the PC was reset, it now exhibits the same issues as Excel where the server is in the Trusted locations but will not open files. I have tried removing the server from the Trusted Location in both applications, restarting the PC and re-adding them (testing before, after and in-between) and had no luck.

• Can I trick Carbonite into backing up an external hard drive?

  I use Carbonite to back up my PC (Windows XP). We were running low on disk space on our home PC (down to 15 GB), so I went out and purchased an external hard drive. However, Carbonite will not back it up. Is it possible to set up Carbonite to backup an external hard drive? I just want the external drive to be extra disk space. From their FAQ: The current version of Carbonite backs up only the files that reside on permanent hard drives on your computer. It will not back up network drives, external drives, and NAS (network accessed storage) drives. If there are files on a remote drive that you wish to include in your Carbonite backup, you should copy the files to a folder on your local hard drive. If the files are on a shared network drive, you could install Carbonite on the computer on which the network shared drive physically exists, and back the files up directly from that computer. Check back soon for a Carbonite service plan that will allow you to back up your external drives.

• Options for small windows network setup without dedicated server?

  I'm very weak on networking and hope someone can point me in the right direction: I have written some windows client/server software which incorporates a database which is located on a windows server. I have a test installation running at a customer's office where the server has a static IP address. In this case its easy for the clients to access the database because of the fixed IP address. Also, customers with network servers generally have specialist support staff to set up my software, so its not such a problem for me. However I also need to offer the software to customers who have small offices with less than 10 PCs and no dedicated network server. In this case I want the customer to be able to nominate one PC as the database "server" and install my software and have the clients access it. But in this situation I believe the "server" PC may not have a dedicated IP address. Q1: What is the best way to set this up simply and make it work? Can I reliably reference the "server" by using its name, or is there a way to assign dummy fixed IP addresses? Ideally this needs to be workable on small networks running a mixture of XP/Vista/Windows7 as my target market may well have mixed OSes etc. I guess this would be akin to home networking? • Recommended open-source firmware for ASUS RT-N16

  I have recently acquired an ASUS RT-N16 router. My original plan for it was to install Tomato on it. However, after checking their website i found out that the firmware was not updated in the last 2 years. There seem to be a few updated mods but none of them really seemed mature/stable/well-documented. I would like to know what other people recommend as open-source firmware for this router. I know the answers will probably be subjective; so i will give a bit of background on my needs: for now i will only use the Wi-Fi on an Android phone the connection will not be shared with anyone (so QOS is optional) i want a stable (wired) connection on my PC (for online gaming etc.) i want the (wired) download/upload speeds to be as close as possible to those achieved by directly plugging the Ethernet cable to the PC's network card; i have a 100 Mbps connection my ISP uses PPPOE my technical level: i am a software developer and i have good knowledge of bash scripting, but no experience with networking Also, i know that i could probably just use the stock firmware (and maybe will use it for a while), but i'm interested in trying an open-source version (for more features, flexibility, as a learning exercise etc.)

• Maintaining "Portability" Between Linux and Windows 7

  I am using the following ways in my office's Windows 7 machine to maintain my "portabilibity" when disaster strikes and I need to switch computer while I have no luxury of time for reinstalling all my program to the new PC. a majority of programs I used are portable, mostly from portableapp.com, like notepad+, GIMP, even R, I extract them and store them in a folder in My document, in a structure similar to the default portableapp installation when they are installed to a thumbdrive only a few software that portable version is not available and I will install them as usual all of my working files are stored in a folder in My document I regularly backup them all using syncback, because this program can keep versioning of my backup, and the backup is stored in a portable drive. One day I need to switch my computer and the operation is relative simple for me: I just move the two folders mentioned above into the my document folder of the new PC, install those few "non-portable" program in it, and this is almost done, some minor hiccups can be solved by reinstalling the portableapp into the drive. Overall speaking it is a smooth process. I would like to maintain the same degree of "portability" in my home Linux desktop (Ubuntu or Mint, I'm still deciding), that is, if my Linux crash and I need to reinstall it again. All I need to do is the move the two folder back to the new Linux, and most of my work will be almost ready to be worked on again. But I don't know how to find a Linux-alternative of portableapps. Being a newer to Linux, can anyone tell me whether this is possible in Linux?

• Dell PS/2 Keyboard Stops Working Randomly After Power Disturbance

  I have a Dell PS/2 keyboard connected to a desktop PC running Slackware 12.2 & Windows XP. After a recent, brief power outage/disturbance at my home, the keyboard has begun to quit working at random times. It has stopped at POST, but not by keyboard error -- I have to press the F1 key to continue booting, and at times the keyboard has already stopped working. Other times, the keyboard will work perfectly for a long time (a day or more) before it finally quits. It has stopped at boot, in Windows XP, and in Slackware. The led lights continue to work regardless. I have tried another PS/2 keyboard and it seems to be immune to this problem. The USB mouse always works. Does anyone have any ideas about how this might have happened? If this is related to the power disturbance that killed the power to the running PC, is it feasible that it would have only fried the keyboard itself (which still works sometimes) and not the PS/2 port nor anything else? I have experienced no other problems since the event.

Local text and voice messenger software Bridge the 3 internet connections and route all the internet connections from the main server Ability to allow or deny internet access to any computer on the network. Any setup guides / resources or how-to's on how I can achieve the above requirements.

• Router block some sites

  Hi I was using ADSL Modem/Router earlier. The device is quite old Pronet PN-ADSL 101 E/U model (pics: http://bit.ly/P2YaWy, http://bit.ly/OA700l) Since it had only one RJ45 out, I bought new Wireless Router TPLink TL-WR941ND. It has 4 RJ45 out and 3 wireless antennas. I configured my old router in bridge. Now, if I have to connect my pc to Internet through the old router, I have to enter username and password. Then I connected the RJ45 output of old router to the WAN in of new router. and ran the CD of new router. It configured the new router in PPPoE by saving the username and password in router to dial automatically. So now I have to just plug in the wires in my new routers any RJ45 out. I am able to access the Internet when I connect through new router (both wired and wirelessly), but some sites are getting blocked. Most notably yahoo.com (though ymail.com is working), Microsoft.com. msn.com. These sites work perfectly fine when I connect my pc directly to my old router and enter username and password manually. (However others like google.com. facebook.com works fine when connect through new router) So here these some sites need some parameter set but I am unable to find them out. Can anyone help me. My friend said he also faced same problem. Surprisingly he advised me to see if the same websites will work through Opera turbo mode and boom they worked. So what could be the problem?

• RTL8192SU + RTL8191E Linux Issue Installing Driver

  OK I've read tons of fourms of people getting the onboard RTL8191E working and the RTL8192SU working dif is U = USB they are both N and i have both Toshiba L500D-00T pre-installed Win Vistax64-HP and i have obtained the free Win7x64-HP upgrade the onboard wificard sucks and can't hold a stable connection for more then 20minutes in windows but the usb is amazing. Now problem is i tried both Ubuntu and Mandriva with no resolve the issue is the onboard drive detects and actually SHOWS that it's there but no wireless networks detect so it's saying no SSID's are broadcasting which i know is a lie since I'm running a 2wire bell dsl modem with built in wifi and a Linksys wrt54g w/ DD-WRT firmware and both are broadcasting fine. Why don't i use the USB? new in Mandriva Linux Control Center 2010.0 it shows up in Other/Unknown as RTL8191S WLAN Adapter and on the right pane this shows up Identification Vendor: ?Manufacturer Realtek Description: ?RTL8191S WLAN Adapter Media class: ? Connection Bus: ?USB Bus PCI #: ?1 PCI device #: ?5 Vendor ID: ?0x0bda Device ID: ?0x8172 Sub vendor ID: ?0x0000 Sub device ID: ?0x0000 Misc Module: ?rtl819xU In the hardware device manager in mandriva it shows up as unknown but shows that it's realtek and that it's a 8192 chipset. but no option to for a driver install and when i do a make in terminal i get this error and no clue what it means [root@John-PC rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1020.2009_64bit]# make make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-desktop-3mnb/build: No such file or directory. • Is this processor burned?

  I've recently exchange the processors in two PCChips boards. Both boards are LGA775. Board A is P17G(Pentium 4 HyperThreading 3GHz) and board B is P49G(Pentium Dual Core 3GHz). I use board A to watch videos, and some of them are 3GB size and this is why I exchanged the CPU. I installed Dual Core in board A and it worked out of the box, now 3GB videos use 5% of CPU instead of 50%. When I installed the pentium in the board B, I forgot to connect the 4pin power and, when i powered on the PC, the CPU fan stay off. Then, I connected all right this time, and now the board doesnt show video. I think the CPU is not working but im not sure about that. The PC turns on and the HD spins, the CPU fan spins, network socket blinking, but not video and case power led is neither blinking. I tried with other PSU and everything was the same. I figure out that CPU have that paste above. IDK really what's happening, I hope I dont have to buy another CPU. Is it Burned?

• Windows 7 mapped drive kicking off OS X users

  I've mapped a network drive on my Windows 7 PC at my office. The windows machine has a few TB of storage that is being accessed by my development team (all running mac os 10.7). The share seems to work fine for a little while but will timeout and kick the mac users off and sometimes disallows a connection on the next attempt. Restarting the windows machine fixes the problem. I've tried this tutorial as well as setting the maximum session length in the Local Security Policy section to 99999 (I discovered 0 did not mean unlimited, only a 'reasonable ammount of time') anyway, the setting is now for ~208 days which is sufficient (see attached). I'm having trouble debugging this in general so if anyone has some pointers I'm all ears. This is a intermittent issue which in my opinion are the hardest kinds to debug. If anyone knows of how I might monitor connections from the PC that would also be pretty cool. Previously the files were hosted on a mac mini and everything was working just fine (the mini just didn't have the ability for the storage capacity we needed) so I believe it is some windows setting that is kicking users off.   I currently have five PCs at home, three running WinXP and two running Ubuntu. They are set up like this: ISP ----- Modem ---- Switch ---- Ubuntu1 -- B&W Printer | |--WinXP1 | |--WinXP2 Wireless |--Colour Printer | |---------Ubuntu2 |---------WinXP3 (laptop) The Ubuntu1 machine is set up as a PDC using Samba and runs fetchmail, procmail, dovecot to get my e-mail and allow me to access the e-mail via imap so I can read the e-mail on any PC. I'd like to set up the network like this: ISP ----- Modem ---- Ubuntu1 ---- Switch ------WinXP1 | | |--WinXP2 B&W Printer Wireless |--Colour Printer | |---------Ubuntu2 |---------WinXP3 (laptop) My questions are: How to configure Ubuntu1 to act as a firewall. How to configure Ubuntu1 to provide a consistant user authentication across the network, at the moment Samba provides roaming profiles for the XP machines but the Ubuntu2 machine has it's own user lists. I'd like to have a single authentication for both XP machines and linux machines so that users added to the server list will propagate to all PCs (i.e. new users can log on using any PC without modifying any of the client PCs). How to configure a linux client (Ubuntu2 above) to access files on the server (Ubuntu1), some of which are in user specific folders, effectively sharing /home/{user} per user (read and write access) and stuff like /home/media/photos with read access for everyone and limited write access. How to configure the XP machines (if it is different from a the Samba method). How to set up e-mail filtering. I'd like to have a whitelist/blacklist system for incoming e-mails for some of the e-mail accounts (mainly, my kids' accounts) with filtered e-mails being put into quaranteen until a sysadmin either adds the sender to a blacklist or whitelist. OK, that's a lot of stuff. For now, I don't want config files*, rather, what services / applications to use and how they interact. For example, LDAP could be used for authentication but what else would be useful to make the administration of the LDAP easier. Once I have a general idea for the overall configuration, I can ask other questions about the specifics. Skizz I have looked around for information, but most answers are usually in the form of abstract config files and lists of packages to install.

• Calendar booking issue - Exchange 2003 and 2010

  In our organization we are running Exchange 2003 and 2010 simultaneously, with the hopes of migrating everyone to Exchange 2010 sometime within the next few months. Everyone is using Outlook 2010. Recently, we had an issue with transaction log storage on the Exchange 2003 server. This was resolved, but for some reason no meeting rooms on the Exchange 2003 server will automatically book meetings any longer. I have played around with this for a while, changing calendar permissions, turning resource scheduling off and back on, etc. No dice. My next step was to try migrating a resource to the Exchange 2010 server. After doing so, and setting it up as a Room, enabling Auto-Accept and removing the EnableDirectBooking registry entry on my PC, I can book a meeting with this room. If EnableDirectBooking is enabled, I get an error message stating: "Meeting Room" declined your meeting because it is recurring. You must book each meeting separately with this resource. This is despite the fact that the meeting I'm attempting to create has no recurrence. Now, I have also created a new test Room from scratch on the Exchange 2010 server, and I can book a meeting with this Room regardless of whether or not I have the EnableDirectBooking reg entry in place. All users here have this registry entry, and I'd rather not have to figure out how to push something out to remove it from every PC. Rather, I'd like to figure out what's different between the configurations of these two meeting rooms so that I could book a meeting room regardless of whether EnableDirectBooking is enabled or not. Any ideas, anyone? Thanks!

• Hard Drive that was used before not detected or accessible in Windows 7

  Hello SU: My PC crashed for some unknown reason, and I am still working on what caused that. However, I pulled my main (windows) drive from my computer and hooked it up to my roommate's machine and was able to pull the data I needed off of it (i.e. the drive is good). I hook up his drives as they were, I had to turn off his machine and unplug his secondary drive to hook mine up, boot his machine and there is no second drive available in windows explorer. I opened Device Manager to see if for some reason it's drive letter got un-assigned, but there is nothing listed in there except his primary hard drive, his optical drive and one other optical drive which I believe is the virtual drive Daemon Tools made. The drive shows up in the BIOS, however after I restarted his machine again it sits on the "Entering setup....." screen at the load window. The only thing I can think of is that may have messed with stuff is I used this tutorial to create a bootable XP install on a USB drive to install XP on my machine (I am 99% certain that the optical drive in my PC is broken) and maybe it used the other hard drive's letter for the USB drive for some reason, which doesn't make much sense since it was recognized it as a different drive letter before I started the process. It is possible that it used the secondary hard drive's letter for it's work, but once again I am uncertain. Where should I go from here? He his bound to wake up within the next several hours and will probably flip a lid if I cannot get some sort of handle on this. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. PS: Anyone who helps me get this situated has a beer or two on me, as long as you are in the greater metro Detroit area, or don't mind traveling a bit!

• Western Digital My Book not recognized by WD software

  A few years ago I bought a WD My Book Pro 2. It worked fine for a while, then one of the drives failed and I sent it back to be replaced under warranty. I never got around to setting up the new one when I got it back. I finally ran out of room on my internal drive, so I tried to use the external - no go. Both drives spin up, but aren't recognized by either Disk Utility (Mac) or the WD Drive Manager. I tried on a PC as well with fresh software. Then I pulled the drives out of the enclosure (warranty is already expired) and plugged them straight into the PC. Both recognized and working 100% in RAID0. BIOS recognizes either disk as functional; Windows only sees them when both are connected due to the RAID which I can't change without the WD software. The drives that were returned to me are the "Green" drives which I've read are NOT recommended for RAID. Is it possible that this is interfering with them reading externally? Any other ideas? My main computer is a laptop so using them internally isn't an option :(
