  • How to keep SpamAssassin up to date under CentOS?

    I am running CentOS 5.4 with SpamAssassin installed via yum. However the version yum installed was SpamAssassin version 3.2.5 and I am finding that this version has many outdated rules -- including a rule FH_DATE_PAST_20XX which marks all email from the year 2010 and forward as spam. Not good. yum says SpamAssassin is up to date -- what can I do to make yum keep SpamAssassin really up to date?

  • Dedicated server automatic backup solution

    I have a dedicated Ubuntu web server in a cloud environment, and I am looking for a nice way to do automated backups. I would like to backup some directories with web apps, and all my MySql databases. As for destination: make snapshots every two hours localy, and every six hours to a remote ftp server. Also delete backup archives older than seven days(localy + ftp), and notify on any problems by email. Now to achieve some of this functionality I use cron + shell script, and http://www.mysqldumper.net/, but really that doesn't answer my needs. Mysqldumper doesn't know automaticly about new databases, and shell script does not notify on problems. It's something I have to check out from time to time, and i don't have trust for. I googled a while, and seems like most people solve this stuff with shell scripts. Is this a method you can trust? Are there any web-gui tools, I'm missing? Maybe there is a smarter startegy for doing this? I'm a little bit confused.

    I have installed a linux distro and I "think" it is vulnerable to kernel exploits. I have to update kernel but I need to know if it is really compiled in year 2003? How can I know if additional updates are made to the kernel? Linux gandalf 2.4.21-4.ELsmp #1 SMP Fri Oct 3 17:52:56 EDT 2003 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Does also "smp" mean that it is safe from latest threats or something? Thank you.

The founders of the company (who are leaving) want to maintain a few email addresses on Google Apps for them to use over the next year. Does anyone know if it's possible to have just a few Google Apps email addresses working on a domain and the rest of the domain running on Outlook Exchange?

A lot of this work is university related and constantly swapping files across several computers is annoying at best. I have a large final-year project coming up and I'm going to be sharing this work amongst home and university and require some kind of online storage that provides version control for my programs, as well as my Word documents, PDF's and saved academic papers.   • Should I upgrade to Symantec Endpoint Protection?

    I'm the IT manager at an animal shelter in Upstate New York. We have a Windows network with about 50 desktops running Windows XP Pro. We used to use CA eTrust Antivirus, but that product didn't work too well (too many infections got through). About six months ago, we switched to using Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition ver. 10.1.8.8000. If anything, the Symantec product is even worse. The last six weeks in particular have been very bad -- we've had about seven or eight PCs get hit with those malware infections that masquerade as antivirus software. In most of those cases, Symantec didn't even flag the malware at all. So... what gives with the Symantec Antivirus? As far as I can tell, it's installed correctly and downloading updated definitions nightly. I can upgrade to Symantec Endpoint Protection for $220 (we get non-profit pricing), but I don't want to do it if it's not going to be significantly better. Any advice? Should I switch to something else entirely? Thanks!

    I started getting carpal tunnel symptoms about a year back and have tried different mice/keyboards and nothing seems to help. When my right wrist (i am right handed) started giving me pain, I switched from a regular optical mouse to this logitech mouse: It helped for a short while. I then started to learn using my left hand to operate the mouse. Now, my left wrist has started experiencing the symptoms. Which mouse do you recommend that has really helped you?

    I just ran a clean install of windows 7 this morning, installed all the latest updates, and I'm now trying to install Office Ultimate 2007 that I purchased last year from the Office Ultimate Steal. It was running fine under windows xp, but when I try to run the installer in windows 7, I get an error message that says: The installation of this package failed I have tried the following: Running the installer as administrator Running the installer under windows xp (SP3) compatability Mode Re downloading the installer (I have it saved to my dropbox account, I can't redownload it from Microsoft) Any help that you can provide would be great!

  • Formatted C: from Windows 7 setup, now it won't even install

    Help, I'm so confused. I did more or less what's been described here: I formatted Vista and installed Windows 7 over it. Problem is that I'm now unable to boot (...) [1] I'm installing Seven on top of Vista on ACER AS1410 Notebook When it comes to the part where I choose where to install, I pick the partition labeled C: but instead of keeping windows.old files (what would I want them for?) I choose to go and carelessly format the partition (my bad). It shows me this error: Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information Now the only option is "Load Driver". i have tried installing every single one from ACER website, none of them are useful. I even flashed orig. BIOS. I've tried going back and choose "Repair" like in the picture:[2] but I only get an error: "Failed to save startup options" I think this is weird, what else can I do?     What is default sorting for excel 2010 pivot table and charts I have a "Year month Week" column in my data sheet which I am using as row label, excel pivot table renders it arbitrarily like in data sheet I have data in the following order 2010 October Week 1 2010 September Week 1 2010 September Week 2 2010 September Week 3 2010 September Week 4 but when I use this in pivot table it generates row labels as 2010 October Week 1 2010 September Week 3 2010 September Week 2 2010 September Week 4 2010 September Week 1 I want pivot table to show row labels exactly in the same order as it is in data sheet

    My excel macros are no longer working as designed. Last week they worked as expected, this week a different result. I even tried a two year old version, it did not work the way it used to. Guy's conclusion an Office / Excel update changed the macro behaviour. Am I alone in this conclusion? If so I'll take a different troubleshooting approach.

    I was messing around with sendmail in Rails a year ago and have had this message popping up in the terminal after every command ever since: You have new mail in /var/mail/Lance How do I properly get rid of that so the message goes away? I ever use any of that functionality and don't have mail on my computer. There's one file in /var/mail called lance, and it's huge. Can I just remove it?

  • Possible boot conflict?

    I was installing Ubuntu on a computer on which Windows XP was already installed. The computer has multiple hard drive bays, so I decided to remove the XP HDD and install Ubuntu on a blank HDD when it was the only HDD in the system. Unfortunately, if I now try to boot Ubuntu with the Windows XP drive in the second slot, nothing will boot. However, if Windows XP is in the first slot, it will boot fine. Can anybody explain why this happens? When I was checking out the BIOS to see if something was messed up, I discovered that when Ubuntu is in the first slot, the BIOS doesn't recognize any HDDs. However, if XP is in the first slot, the BIOS recognizes both drives. Any hypotheses about why this happens? Edit: Here's the setup. I have an old server with seven SCSI HDD slots. I have five identical 68 Gb SCSI drives, but I can keep only two plugged in. XP is still installed on the first drive, but I reinstalled Ubuntu on the second drive and had Grub overwrite the XP bootloader on the first drive. Now, the setup works fine, and I can use Grub to load either XP or Ubuntu. However, if I plug in another identical blank HDD in the third slot, the computer recognizes only the XP drive and doesn't boot. Grub starts to load, then gives me a "disk not found" error. Running ls from the grub rescue prompt only shows one drive with two partitions. I guess this is a BIOS problem, but I'd still like to know what triggers it. What about a blank drive could cause the BIOS to freak out?

    I have a 3 year old MacBook Pro and lately I've been getting an error message when I try to download something to my machine, this is what it says: Download error /Users/scarletriley/Downloads/the name of document goes here- no spaces of course! could not be opened, because an unknown error occurred. Try saving to a disk first and then opening the file. What does this mean, and what should I do to fix it?
