• Troubleshooting mailserver (Postfix, Dovecot) on Ubuntu Server 9.10?

  Hi, I have configured a mail server with Postfix and Dovecot on Ubuntu Server 9.10. I followed the guidelines here (using Maildir): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Postfix https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Dovecot The tests seemed alright so I connected it to GMail which is able to connect and fetch e-mails. But since there's no e-mail in the Maildir/ directory I can't decide if the problem is Postfix or Dovecot. And I am totally new to mailservers so I don't know where to start troubleshooting. So, I want to start by testing Dovecot. How can I create a fake "Hello World"-email directly on the server (using a text editor) so that I can try to fetch it with GMail? If Dovecot is alright, where do I start looking for errors in Postfix? Thank you for your time. Christoffer

  The MySQL server won't start and is reporting the following error: /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld: Can't create/write to file '/usr/local/mysql/data/James-Barnhills-Mac-Pro.local.pid' (Errcode: 13) Can't start server: can't create PID file: Permission denied All the permissions are set recursively as: lrwxr-xr-x 1 _mysql wheel 27 Nov 22 09:25 mysql -> mysql-5.5.18-osx10.6-x86_64 but it won't start. I've tried reinstalling several times to no avail. I'm running as root on Mac OS, and MySQL has read, write, and execute permissions on the "data" folder.

• How do I elevate privileges when running appcmd from a nant task?

  We are using a Windows 7 box as build server. As part of our continuous integration process I would like to stop and start an IIS 7 website. I have tried doing this from the command line using appcmd: appcmd start site "my website" However, this only works if I start the console window by choosing "Run as Administrator", so it won't work out-of-the-box from NAnt etc. How do I script appcmd to be run with elevated privileges (or am I going about this in the wrong way)?   I am trying to debug a SMB share issue on an embedded Linux setup. Before diving into source code, I want to make sure this is not a configuration problem. So here is my case: Scenario-1: dhcp server enabled by default 1- system boots 2- udhcpcd server starts 3- smb server starts (smbd) 4- nmb server starts (nmbd) 5- smb share accessible Scenario-2: dhcp server disabled by default 1- system boots 2- smbd starts 3- nmbd fails to start 4- smb share inaccessible 5- $/etc/init.d/udhcpcd start 6- $/usr/sbin/nmbd still fails without an error message The client pc and the server device have static IP addresses in both cases. Is it possible that, NMBD somehow depends on a DHCP server at start?

• Cant get XAMPP Server to run?

  I recently installed XAMPP server with PHP, MySQL, and Apache, and I had a friend help me load and configure it and it worked fine. I was able to play around with it, and load anything I wanted and I was able to confirm that it was working. When I went back to use it today, and I tried to run it Apache wont start up now. I imagine I either need to stop another service or there is something not allowing me to start up XAMPP, because even when I try to run the XAMPP_START script from the command line, it wont start.

I'm not sure but it's said they flash routers with modified firmware. I have also tried to set up Bitcomet port forwarding on port 13514 and failed.

• Windows XP scheduled tasks and defragmenting?

  I am trying to set a seduled task to defrag my HDD on a regular basis and following the guide on http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/tips/gehrke1.mspx. It does not work. That process only brings a DOS window which does nothing (well it displays some text about the Microsoft defragging program). I tried using the "%SystemRoot%\system32\dfrg.msc C:" as the command path that is in the start menu but that brings up the program to start a defrag job and doesn't start automatically. What am I missing?

• What is causing the unusual high load average and IOwait?

  I noticed on Tuesday night of last week, the load average went up sharply and it seemed abnormal since the traffic is small. Usually, the numbers usually average around .40 or lower and my server stuff (mysql, php and apache) are optimized. • Syslog - capturing event logs from Win2k boxes

  Hi all, I asked this question in SuperUser without much luck and so I am posting it here to see if anyone can assist. We have a central syslog server and we want it to capture event log events from Windows hosts. We are specifically interested in logging service start/stop events. We installed "Eventlog to Syslog" on these windows hosts and all works well with XP hosts (Events come from Service Control Manager). However, we are having issues with Win2k hosts. For some reason, service start/stop events do not get logged in the Event Log for Win2k hosts. I got another friend from another company to test on a Win2k host and he does get start/stop events on them. I have searched around for local audit policies i need to enable but with not much luck. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• PC reboots automatically in the begining

  I have a AMD Phenom II 3GHz. 2 GB RAM system running on Windows 7. Off late my PC does not start properly I have to start it at least 7-8 times before it starts. It starts and then shuts down. Every time the time for which the system is up increases. After 7-8 attempts it starts an works fine. I have to give it a min between restarts (USB mouse light goes off). If I try restarting before this time the PC does not start. I am suspecting humidity playing some factor as this issue has started creeping up ever since the rains have started.

• How to fix skipping/stuttering audio in Google Chrome

  If I play Google Music, or a Youtube video in the Chrome browser, and then open a new tab and start typing the address bar, the audio will quickly cut in and out as I am typing (with almost every letter I type). It also is choppy if I play the video and start typing in the start menu. I can not repeat this behavior using internet explorer. Based on that Im thinking that it maybe a problem with the version of flash Chrome is using but I'm not sure. Any ideas? Im running 32 bit windows 7, i.e. 9, and chrome 23.0 pc is a lenovo t43p. I have the latest sound drivers. i.e. is using flash 11.5.502. chrome is using : Adobe Flash Player - Version: 11.5.31.2 Only one (this) plugin is listed for flash in the chrome plugins list.

  Trying to install MySQL onto the Windows XP machine. While going through the installation steps (in the "MySQL Server Instance Config. Wizard"), I get to a point where it the window reads: MySQL Server Instance Configuration (bold header) Choose the configuration for the server instance. Ready to execute... o Prepare configuration o Write configuration file o Start service o Apply security settings (this line is greyed out) Please press [Execute] to start the configuration. [ Back ] [ Execute ] [ Cancel ] So I press execute, and then a red X appears in the second step: Write configuration file and at the bottom, where it originally said: Please press [Execute] to start the configuration. It now says: The template configuration file cannot be found at C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0\bin\my-template.cnf I'm unsure what it means, but I canceled the config wizard and looked in the directory that had been created (C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0).   The Windows 7 shell (Explorer) can be made to run with Administrator privileges by this manual process: Kill Explorer shell by holding down Shift+Ctrl, right-clicking the Shut down button in the Start Menu, and selecting Exit Explorer Start Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc Elevate Task Manager privileges by going to Processes tab and selecting Show processes from all users Then start up a new instance of the shell by File | Run in Task Manager, typing in explorer, and selecting the Create this task with administrative privileges. After following the above process, the Windows shell will be running with administrative privileges, and any programs it launches will also have administrative privileges. This makes performing tasks that require the privilege far easier, particularly for command-line applications, which usually fail silently or with an Access denied. message rather than giving an opportunity to use UAC to elevate the process's privileges. What I'm interested in, though, is creating an account which uses a privileged shell by default, rather than having to follow this laborious process every time. How can it be done?

  Note: This is not the question "How to disable startup items" because the simple answer is: "Use msconfig". Now as for my question: I recently am very annoyed that some programs add startup items to my PC without my knowledge after installation, I always have 2 programs which startup - Temperature monitor and the Catalyst Control Center Tray. Now, sometimes I install something and it adds startup entries, how can I make sure that no startup entries can be added to windows anymore? So what I would like to do: -Disable adding scheduled tasks (even for administrator accounts, so programs installing from them can't add startup entries too) -Disable adding startup entries to the registry (even for administrators, would changing the permissions in HKLM on the Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run to read only be enough?) -Disable all other methods of startup in Windows 7 I don't know -Set default startup of NEW installed services to "Start Manually" instead of/and block "Start Automaticly" and "Start Automaticly (Delayed)" How can I accomplish this? This is also a nice way to prevent most viruses fom running after machine reboot (if this can be accomplished).

• virt-viewer slower than virt-manager when viewing

  I've got a thin client server in which I have a few VM's for users under KVM which I manage through virt-manager. What I've noticed is if I start a VM guest on a thin client using the command 'virt-viewer ' then the guest is painfully slow to move around. However if on the same thin client I start the same guest VM through virt-manager it's fast. What are the differences here? Can I start a VM without having the user load up virt-manager and double click on their VM? Should I be looking at using splice in virt-viewer instead of VNC which is what I currently use?

At the moment all I get is the following error: com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPSendFailedException: 530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first One solution is to start Hudson as follows: java -Dmail.smtp.starttls.enable="true" -jar /usr/share/hudson/hudson.war However, I am already using the following to start Hudson: sudo /etc/init.d/hudson start I am thinking the solution is to somehow set the system property mail.smtp.starttls.enable in a property file somewhere, but I have no idea how to do that. • Running Mac OSX 10.6 my users home directory is wrong

  Somehow my home directory on my mac machine has been changed and I'm not sure how to go about changing it back, I'm more of a linux guy and mac has some other mechanism for storing that information. Basically when I log into the machine normally than start a terminal window. I start in the /Users/erik_miller directory, which is my home directory, but when I run some this like cd ~ The machine tries to change to /Users/erik_miller. Yes, the same path with a period on the end. I can change my $HOME environment variable for the session, but the next time I start the machine it reverts. So, I think if I can find where that information is stored I can just change it there and hopefully all will be well.

• More than 3 seconds "Initial Connection" time (webpagetest.org)

  I'm having a weird issue with a vBulletin forum, on a 2? Xeon E5645 w/ 16GB RAM, cPanel and LiteSpeed webserver; It takes too long to start loading... When I tested it with webpagetest.org I saw that for every request there's a 3 second "Initial connection" delay, which I don't know why is happening. Here's a screenshot: CPU Load is between 0.03 and 0.05, I've got several GB of free RAM, practical no I/O activity, and this delay can occur even with only one visitor on the forum. Where do you suggest I start searching? What could be the reason for this kind of delay? I don't think it's the webserver, or the forum because there's another website on the server (total 2 sites) which is WordPress based, and has exactly the same issue with the 3 second initial connection delay. I believe it's OS related, but need a clue on where to start looking. Thanks in advance :)

• How to prevent recursive windows when connecting to vncserver on localhost

  I have a VNCServer (vino) configured on my Ubuntu 8.10 box. I would like to connect to this server from a vncclient running on this same machine (the reason for doing this strange thing is mentioned below). Understandably, when I connect to a vncserver on the same box, my vncclient shows recursive windows. Is there a way I can connect to the vncserver on the same machine and not have the recursive windows problem? Perhaps if I could start the vncserver on one display and the client on another display then will it work? How can I do something like this? Note - Reason for running vnc client and server on the same machine: When I start our Java Swing unit test suite, a bunch of swing UI's are created and destroyed as the tests run. These windows fly in the foreground making it impossible to work while the test suite is running. I am hoping to start the test suite within a vncclient so that I can continue working while the tests run.

• adding mongo to path

  Bit of a noob question. I have downloaded MongoDb and installed it here /Users/mike/downloads/mongodb In order to start it, I then have to 'cd' into the 'bin' /Users/mike/downloads/mongodb/bin and run ./mongod (to start the database) and ./mongo (to start the mongo shell) The problem is that I can only work with python and ruby scripts using the mongo shell if I have those scripts stored in the same bin directory, and I don't think that's the ideal set up. Will exporting the path allow me to access mongo from outside the bin? For example, I would prefer to have my ruby scripts in /sites/ruby and be able to access mongo by starting ruby in /sites/ruby. If exporting to path is the solution, how do I do that. I'm using a mac

• Named ports in windows!

  I wonder how stuff like this works in windows (xp and other that have telnet): Start-> Run -> cmd -> telnet <xyz.com> http Start-> Run -> cmd -> telnet <xyz.com> pop3 Start-> Run -> cmd -> telnet <xyz.com> smtp Are these "named" ports? Only windows knows that it has to substitute port numbers coz these are standard ports? Is there way I could create such a named port on windows? I would like something like this : telnet <xyz.com> oracle to translate to telnet <xyz.com> 1521

• Apache port forwarding with ZTE ZXV10 W300 router (provider specific firmware)

  I'm trying to configure port forwarding for Apache 2.2 installed on Windows XP SP3 with ZTE ZXV10 W300 router. The computer has a static IP 192.168.1.2. Port forwarding is configured as following: Enable true Name Apache Protocol TCP (also tried TCP and UPD) WAN Host Start IP Address empty WAN Host End IP Address empty WAN Connection stream WAN Start Port 8080 WAN End Port 8080 LAN Host IP Address 192.168.1.2 LAN Host Start Port 8080 LAN Host End Port 8080 Port 8080 is open for both TCP and UPD in Windows Brandmauer. Apache configuration: Listen 192.168.1.2:8080 Router Firmware: Hardware Version V1.0.01 Software Version V8.0.02T03_CFA Boot Loader Version V1.1.2 The provider is COMSTAR. I'm not sure but it's said they flash routers with modified firmware. I have also tried to set up Bitcomet port forwarding on port 13514 and failed.
