  This is kindove a strange question, but... There was a site called Blackle ( http://www.blackle.com/) which "claimed" to save energy by using a black background (it doesn't: see here: http://skeptics.stackexchange.com/questions/4373/how-much-energy-does-displaying-a-webpage-with-a-black-background-actually-save). However, blackle and it's idea of "green website design" interested me, and I was wondering if there are any ways to design an energy saving website that actually save energy. If anyone knows of any, please post them here. If nobody has any, then I guess there isn't a way to save energy through website design...

• Problem with homepage's SEO when using subfolders in a multi language website

  After watching a hundreds of threads about multilanguage website I haven't found an answer to my specific problem, so I think its not a common issue and I must have done something terribly wrong ;-) We have a brand.com website in DE main language and the following subfolders: /de/ = canonical of / + redirect to / /it/ /en/ When I crawl google.com for EN keywords or google.it for IT keywords then I get as results the homepage in German language (both title and description) as the top result with no trace of the /it/ or the /en/ homepage. Is this because /it/ and /en/ both needs a separate link building strategy? I've already configured Google webmaster tool into the following way: brand.com, no language preference brand.com/de/, de language brand.com/it/, it language brand.com/en/, en language Perhaps having "/" as DE main page is it wrong and I should use a different approach? i.e. like having "/" to be a 301 to /de/ instead ? Thanks in advance.

• Why does Google report a soft 404 when I redirect to the signup page?

  In the last month, I've got an increased number of "soft 404" errors reported by Google webmaster tools which actually work well for users. Configuration (maybe useless): I have a website built with rails 3.1 Authentication is handled by the gem Devise Problem: On this page http://en.bemyboat.com/yacht-charter/9965-sailboat-beneteau-oceanis-43 Click on "Ask a Boat request" (a simple form, in GET to: http://en.bemyboat.com/boat_requests/new/9965) You are redirected with the HTTP status 302 to sign in You are then sent back to the new page if successfully sign in. Google tells me that the link on "ask a boat request" returns a soft 404. I can't make this form in "POST" (which will solve the problem) because we need to automatically redirect users back to the page after sign in. (the Gem Devise memorizes the "get" link.) To simplify, the question is: How to protect a private page with authentication, reached with a simple "GET" and not to be penalized by Google as a "soft 404".

• what are the best concert-ticket systems? comercial and open source

  can anybody recommend (of developers-opinion) such systems, where you can book tickets for concerts, conferences, etc. one should be able to book a seat as well, and it shell do the debitcard stuff, and has a good interface for accounting. I am looking for an open source solution, but I am also interested in commercial ones, to have a comparison of features and prices, etc. thanks for everybodys suggestions - pros and cons to it are very wellcome ;) well, it shouldn't has a flash component multi languages :) would be great an extra mobile-view is preferred the extra extra bonus for such a system would be a very good wordpress compatibility p.s. sorry for my english well ... I already googled a lot. But I found so very many, that I hope you could help me to find a good choice, to have a base from where I can do a further lookup. and for sure :) What are the things you I have to have in mind. • Is PhotoBucket a viable solution to host a website's photo galleries

  I'm currently working with a lot of photographers and will probably be picking up development on a professional photography site soon. With that in mind, and I can't stop thinking about a way I can implement a user-friendly photo gallery hosting solution where the site owner can upload images themselves without any webmaster intervention. Kind of like a CMS for image hosting. The idea is: - The user can log in to PhotoBucket - Upload their gallery - Visit an admin section of the site - Enter the new gallery name to the listing And... Voila, the gallery automagically gets displayed on the website in a clean lightbox-style presentation format (ie, no iframe nonsense). I took a brief look at the API and it looks promising. Is this a viable solution? Bonus points if you have implemented something like this with Photobucket and/or another 3rd-party image hosting site. Note: Purchasing a premium account is expected if necessary. The limitations on free accounts at most image hosting sites are just too restrictive to be useful.

• Using rel=next and rel=prev with multiple sets of paginated content on the same page

  We are running into issues with trying to figure out how to implement rel="next" and rel="prev" -- coupled with rel="canonical" -- with multiple sets of paginated content on the same page, with pages in multiple cultures. In other words, how do we implement these when we have a pager for both Product Reviews and Questions and Answers (aka "Q&A") on the same page, with duplicate content across culture-specific URLs (e.g. /us/en/my-product vs. /ca/en/my-product)? Our current implementation will actually do a full postback when you click Page 2, and will add something to the query string (e.g. website.com/ca/en/my-product?previewpage=2 or website.com/ca/en/my-product?questionpage=2). If we only had one set of paginated content then the implementation would certainly be more straightforward. Adding a second set of paginated content (i.e. Q&A) complicates things. Let's assume that we want the United States English page to be the canonical target (i.e. /us/en/my-product) based on culture. If you go to the /ca/en/my-product page you'll have a rel="canonical" href="/us/en/my-product". So far so good. Let's also assume that we are not implementing a page that lists ALL Product Reviews and Q&A. This would likely solve a number of our problems by using rel="canonical" to this page, but is not an option for reasons that are out of scope for this discussion. Now if you click on page 2 of Product Reviews, it will reload the page with /ca/en/my-product?reviewpage=2 as the URL. Given this scenario, here are my questions: On page 2 of the my-product page on the Canadian site, should there be a rel="canonical" to /us/en/my-product?reviewpage=2 (assuming the content is identical in the United States and Canada)? Should the rel="prev" go to /ca/en/my-product?reviewpage=1 or should it go to /ca/en/my-product ? The query-string version would really only be accessible if using the pager and shows the exact same content as the base page. The following two questions are closely related to this one. Should the /ca/en/my-product?reviewpage=1 have a rel canonical directly to /us/en/my-product (United States page with nothing in query string) since the content is identical)? Given that Q&A content is also paginated, should there be a rel="next" on the base page without query string? In other words, should the /ca/en/my-product page have a rel="next" to /ca/en/my-product?reviewpage=2 AND rel="next" to /ca/en/my-product?questionpage=2 . So far as I can tell it doesn't make sense to have multiple rel="next" implementations on the same page. I suspect that the pages with query string values should have rel="next" and rel="prev" that only point to other pages with query strings and not to the base page. The ?reviewpage=1 and ?questionpage=1 pages would then just have a rel="canonical" to /us/en/my-product . Thoughts? I know this is a tough one -- that's why I brought it to this community. • Do Spambots have access to unlimited IP addresses?

  I have been attacked for weeks by the same spambot trying to brute force the login page. I have a login security module now installed on my Drupal 6 website and it bans on IP after x amount of attempts. It's been going on for ever and I have banned about 1000 IP addresses. Is there any point in me banning on IP due to the spambot having access to unlimited IP addresses or will they run out of them eventually?

• Increase traffic to a site through a site on subdomain [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Subdomain versus subdirectory We have two sites, one is mainly a portfolio site (built with Yii framework) and the other is a digital shop (built with open cart) where we sell plugins and themes. The url's look like www.mydomian.com and www.store.mydomain.com. But of these sites are in the same server. We use google analytics tools and have no problem getting traffic to our store. But we have very little to our portfolio site and we want to increase our Google ranking for this site. Assuming increased traffic to our site will increase our google ranking, we were thinking to use URl masking so the link will be www.mydomain.com/shop and this will load www.store.mydomain.com. Will this count as hits for our portfolio site? Because the .htaccess rules will ensure the subdomain is served. So I dont know if these hits will count on our store or our portfolio site...

I have removed old file updated new robots.txt file with almost full access & uploaded it yesterday but it is still showing me the old version of robots.txt Latest updated copy contents are below User-agent: * Disallow: /flipbook/ Disallow: /SliderImage/ Disallow: /UserControls/ Disallow: /Scripts/ Disallow: /PDF/ Disallow: /dropdown/ I submitted request to remove this file using Google webmaster tools but my request was denied I would appreciate if someone can tell me how i can clear it from the google cache and make google read the latest version of robots.txt file.

• Anyone heard of 'tank tracking'?

  Someone I know told me about some seriously cutting edge blackhat SEO that he called 'tank tracking'. He said that it is some sort of code (he believes written in Python) that 'sits' around the outside perimeter of your visible webpage and listens for an incoming search spider. when a spider enters the page, it traps it in this weird wormhole, making it loop through, I don't know, certain keywords or something.... the result is that a SE like google would consequently give the page a full 100 rating (this person told me Google bestows some sort of scoring app once you've passed a certain number of their exams). A quick google search on 'tank tracking seo', 'tank tracking blackhat seo' and 'tank tracking google' yielded zero results. Let me backtrack a bit and say that I am not interested in utilizing blackhat techniques. I'm just astonished that something like this might be out in the world. Anyone heard of this?

• How to spread XML Sitemaps over several webservers behind AWS loadbalancer?

  We have a web portal with almost a million products and way more other urls. I wrote a script that checks database. If there is a new url needed or an old one update, this script will update/create the XML Sitemaps. But we have several servers behind the load balancer at our rented AWS space. Further this script checks database for each url if there was an update so that it updates the appropriate xml file too. My question is how to spread those XML Sitemaps over all webservers behind this AWS load balancer? Our approaches/ideas: we could just generate them on one server with a cron job and copy them to the other servers, but this could be difficult because of automatic raising numbers of servers and so on. we put them on our S3 - but this one is not avaible thru our domain, so I guess google will have a problem with it I let my script run on every webserver but change it in a way that it will generate each time all xml files if they do not exist. But then I would have conflicts with updated URLs in my database, where I saved timestamp of last changed value of every url Is there another - better - solution that I do not know? Are there any special services by amazon for such cases?

• Weird unexpected image compression on a web server running Apache on Ubuntu?

  I have a weird problem on my production web server running Apache on Ubuntu: it compresses my images thereby dramatically lowering their quality! Actually I have two virtual hosts running, each located in a different folder. Wether I display .gif images by navigating on the two sites, or acceding them directly by their url, their size and quality are invariably degraded. I tried with three different browsers: same problem. Using them on other sites on the Web: no problem. Of course I disabled mod_deflate on the server (which should not compress images anyway), but the phenomenon remains. On my local développement server, running the same configuration, everything is Ok. Now I'm completely lost! For the record, my configuration: Ubuntu 10.04, Apache 2, Php 5.

• Best way to let users choose country/language when submiting an URL to a directory

  Hi all, I want to offer the user the possibility to add the country/language for websites they would submit to a fairly simple website directory. I have a folder with flags from http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ . The flag images are named according to the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, meaning that I could make a PHP script that would be able to retrieve images and the name of the country retrieved from the image name (not the full name, but it wouldn't be necessary). Just to make things clearer, I couldn't find a proper combo-box jQuery plugin for my needs (that would act exactly like the native but with an icon before the text) and don't really have the time to develop one on my own. Considering the number of images, I also wouldn't just display them all with a radio box near them. Also, having a classic drop-down list would be a nightmare for me as I would have to assign the short country name manually to each entry, or do it once for every country. Offering the user a dropdown list with the short country names but no flag near them would also be unfriendly and confusing. The idea is that every website featured in the directory would have the country flag icon near it. I have the images named properly but I don't know how to let the user choose the right image for their website. Any idees? Thank you all in advance! EDIT Temporary solution is this file: http://www.andrewpatton.com/countrylist.csv It contains a list of countries including various other info, like the short country name, the same name that's used for the flag images. Now I was curious, and since I can't find anything via google etc..(probaly don't know the right keywords) what the best way is to present multiple products on one page. Should you use borders? Should you use colours? Which colours? what kind of tweaks will direct the customers attention to the right place? Does anyone know from experience or via research(and could you point me in the right direction to find that research) what the best way to present products is so conversion/clickthrough is optimised?

• Preventing adult content in a forum

  I'm working on a forum that allows images attached to the posts and doesn't require registration. Thing is, I'd like to provide a work-safe navigation option in which the posts with porn images attached aren't shown. The ideas I've come up with are: Making the work-safe option the default and treating all posts with images attached as pornographic, and making them visible only if the user "unchecks" it. Making all posts with images attached not work-safe by default and changing their status to work-safe only after a moderator approved it. Only then they would be visible if the user has the "work-safe" option checked. Does anyone else have an idea? Also, how the big web services deal with this? (YouTube, CraigsList, even StackExchange). By the way, I don't think that "nudity detector" libraries are accurate and they give plenty of false positives and negatives. Thanks!

• Move site to new domain divided by language across subdomains

  I managed to find a nice domain for a fairly fledgling site of mine that actually hasn't been parked by scumbag squatters. Given the upcoming move I'm thinking I'd take the opportunity to split the content across subdomains according to language, much like wikipedia for example: current: www.old-domain.com/en/subject # English www.old-domain.com/subjecto # Spanish (default so not locale in url) proposed en.new-domain.com/subject es.new-domain.com/subjecto The advantage of doing this is a fairly competitive keyword such that I may wish to put a copy of my application on a Spanish slice in order to gain a few serp's. Also pure vanity. Google's webmaster tools allows me to move to the new domain and I can add the root domain and the subdomains but forward to only one. I'll 301 from the old domain appropriately but is there anything I should know about webmaster tools in this respect where effectively I'm moving to two addresses? (Feel free to dissuade me from doing this if it's a bad idea in comments.)

  I don't know the proper name for this, which makes it hard to Google it or describe this. On a site like http://p2theme.com/ as you scroll down you see that content is arranged into screen-sized chunks, each with its own chunk of content, each with a different background color, making them visually distinctive. I've seen this used more and more frequently on websites, but don't know what it's called. People have tried telling me "responsive design" or "flat UI" or "infinite scroll" or "parallax" -- but those are completely different things. What do you call this technique?

• Email links open in a new window [closed]

  I'm asking this as an opinion question. How does everyone treat email links opening in a new window if their default email client is web based? This way? <a href="mailto:[email protected]">email me</a>. It will open fine for app based email clients but open in the same window for web based clients. This way? <a href="mailto:[email protected]" target="_blank">email me</a>. It will open in a new tab for web based email clients but open a blank tab. I cant really seem to find the best of both worlds. What does everyone else do?

• Google is not indexing my entire site despite having a sitemap

  I have an e-commerce website www.beyondtime.in. I have been constantly monitoring Googlebot crawling on my website and my webmaster account. Lately, I have found two issues that I have not been able to understand. 1.) The Google Bots have been only crawling www.beyondtime.in/telecom.php when the URL is not even valid. What needs to be done to let Google crawl other pages of the website as well? 2.) The second question is about the Google Webmaster account, where I've submitted my sitemap with 227 URLs. Out of that, only 156 have been indexed. None of the images of my website have been indexed by Google.

• Video monetising and simple shop, platform?

  I have this client that wants a single-product website. The product is a training-video that they want to deliver virtually and optionally physically. I usually do all the front-end design and back-end development but the budget is close to $0 to start with. So I'm looking for a platform like shopify or something where a shop/cart can be set up quickly and simply with minimal up-front cost - but which can accomodate some kind of paywall (DRM too?) for the online video with an option to purchase for an aditional cost the physical DVD. Am I approaching the wrong way all together? Or do you know of any platform that will accomodate the specs?
