  • JSON Post To Rails From Android

    - by Stealthnh
I'm currently working on an android app that interfaces with a Ruby on Rails app through XML and JSON. I can currently pull all my posts from my website through XML but I can't seem to post via JSON. My app currently builds a JSON object from a form that looks a little something like this: { "post": { "other_param": "1", "post_content": "Blah blah blah" } } On my server I believe the Create method in my Posts Controller is set up correctly: def create @post = current_user.posts.build(params[:post]) respond_to do |format| if @post.save format.html { redirect_to @post, notice: 'Post was successfully created.' } format.json { render json: @post, status: :created, location: @post } format.xml { render xml: @post, status: :created, location: @post } else format.html { render action: "new" } format.json { render json: @post.errors, status: :unprocessable_entity } format.xml { render xml: @post.errors, status: :unprocessable_entity } end end end And in my android app I have a method that takes that JSON Object I posted earlier as a parameter along with the username and password for being authenticated (Authentication is working I've tested it, and yes Simple HTTP authentication is probably not the best choice but its a quick and dirty fix) and it then sends the JSON Object through HTTP POST to the rails server. This is that method: public static void sendPost(JSONObject post, String email, String password) { DefaultHttpClient client = new DefaultHttpClient(); client.getCredentialsProvider().setCredentials(new AuthScope(null,-1), new UsernamePasswordCredentials(email, password)); HttpPost httpPost = new HttpPost("http://mysite.com/posts"); JSONObject holder = new JSONObject(); try { holder.put("post", post); StringEntity se = new StringEntity(holder.toString()); Log.d("SendPostHTTP", holder.toString()); httpPost.setEntity(se); httpPost.setHeader("Content-Type","application/json"); } catch (UnsupportedEncodingException e) { Log.e("Error",""+e); e.printStackTrace(); } catch (JSONException js) { js.printStackTrace(); } HttpResponse response = null; try { response = client.execute(httpPost); } catch (ClientProtocolException e) { e.printStackTrace(); Log.e("ClientProtocol",""+e); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); Log.e("IO",""+e); } HttpEntity entity = response.getEntity(); if (entity != null) { try { entity.consumeContent(); } catch (IOException e) { Log.e("IO E",""+e); e.printStackTrace(); } } } Currently when I call this method and pass it the correct JSON Object it doesn't do anything and I have no clue why or how to figure out what is going wrong. Is my JSON still formatted wrong, does there really need to be that holder around the other data? Or do I need to use something other than HTTP POST? Or is this just something on the Rails end? A route or controller that isn't right? I'd be really grateful if someone could point me in the right direction, because I don't know where to go from here.

  • Accessing Android's Barcode Scanner from WebView

    - by spickles
I love the BarCode Scanner application for the Android phone (we're using Motorola's Droid). Is it possible to access the BarCode Scanner from a web application running on the phone? I was thinking of using a WebView, but I'm not sure how I'd access the Scanner API. Regards, Scott

  • does android 1.5 saves fpu regs on context switch

    - by fazo
i'm asking 1.5 and up or is it dependant on what's in ".config" when compiled for my phone? (and yes, i know that android has to support processors with soft-float, but several libm on different phones do have hard-float libm) (please provide -if possible- any link to/file name of context switching function for msm 7200A/7201A)

  • SQLite in android

    - by klaus-vlad
Hi, My android application uses an sqlite database and during first run it deletes some rows . The next time it runs it tries to do the same , but because the rows were previously deleted it fails . I use SQLite database browser to inspect the database ,after first run (when the rows are deleted) and I observe that the rows that no longer should exist are still in the database , even if ehwn running the app again those rows are no longer visible ! What is the cause for this behavior ?

  • Android adding external libraries to project

    - by wuntee
I have a project that I would like to add external libraries to (and have them packaged with the application) but I am not sure it is happening. I read on this link: http://developer.android.com/intl/fr/guide/appendix/faq/commontasks.html how to, but they do not show up in any of the /data/data/project directories. Does anyone know how I can confirm that the libraries were in fact added to the project for use at runtime? Thanks.

  • Creating an empty Drawable in Android

    - by Kai
Creating a Drawable that is completely empty seems like a common need, as a place holder, initial state, etc., but there doesn't seem to be a good way to do this... at least in XML. Several places refer to the system resource @android:drawable/empty but as far as I can tell (i.e., it's not in the reference docs, and aapt chokes saying that it can't find the resource) this doesn't exist. Is there a general way of referencing an empty Drawable, or do you end up creating a fake empty PNG for each project?

  • Detect if a table contains a column in Android/sqlite

    - by sandis
So I have an app on the market, and with an update I want to add some columns to the database. No problems so far. But I want to detect if the database in use is missing these columns, and add them if this is the case. I need this to be done dynamically and not just after the update to the new version, because the application is supposed to still be able to import older databases. Normally I would be able to use the PRAGMA query, but Im not sure how to do this with Android. I cant use execSQL since it is a query, and I cant figure out how to use PRAGMA with the query()-function. Ofcourse I could just catch exceptions and then add the column, or always add the columns to each table before I start to work with it, but that is not a neat solution. Cheers,

  • iPhone or Android?

According to a recent article iPhone has gained a better appeal than Android among programmers. I'm quite a newbie to Java and a complete profane to ObjectiveC, in your opinion, in which one of the two could I have a try?

  • An EventBus framework for Android

    - by Benju
Can anybody recommend a good framework for handling events in Android? These would be business logic events like UserUpdatedEvent. I am looking for something similar to the EventBus provided by GWT-EVENT but for a JVM that supports weak-references.

  • Android MapView: Disable auto zoom

    - by Ola Andersson
Hi. I have made an Android app that shows a MapView with two overlays, one MyLocationOverlay and one custom overlay. I am programmatically zooming and panning to what I want the map to show. It also auto pans to my current location. The auto pan is moving the map away from what I want to show. So my question is simply: How can I disable the auto pan? Thanks, Ola

  • Using ListViews on the Android?

    - by Robert
Hey everyone, I am just getting started with the Android SDK and I had a quick question. I am trying to set up a ListView with a rectangle of color on the left and then a bit of text for each row. I also want to make it so I can click each entry in the list and open a new activity to display some information (similar to the contact list). Anyone have any examples to help me out? Thanks a ton, Robert Hill

  • Packaging Android resource files within a distributable Jar file

    - by Jeff Gilfelt
I am working on some reusable Android code that I would like to distribute to other developers for use within their own applications. The code has some resource dependencies (layouts, xml & png drawables) that I would like to be able to include and reference within a single package (Jar file). Is this possible, and if so what is the best method to do this?
