• How to get faster iteration times in android development

  I'm creating a game on the android platform that uses the resources/raw folder for assets and scripts. The problem is that every time I change something I have to rebuild the application to test the new variant. Of course this is bad for iteration times. Any ideas about what I can do to avoid rebuilding every time I change something? This *.apk format is getting on my nerves now that I have to recreate it every time I change a word in my scripts. Or at least how to make eclipse auto-rebuild every time I change something in my resources folder so that I don't have to go to Project-Build every time?

• How can I detect and delete all lost configuration folders?

  Over the time there is an increasing number of hidden .configuration folders in my home folder. Many of these come from applications I only installed for testing or from applications that I don't use any more. I would not mind really but these folders do clutter my home, and worse than that sum up to as much as 80 GBytes by now. As there are also applications I never heard of (at least I can't remember I had installed them) I hesitate to delete them. Is there a way to find out which folders came from purged applications? May there even be a way to auto-remove a configuration folder when purging (not removing) the application that created it?

• NHibernate 'IdentifierGenerationException' on an Update trigger

  In my database I have an id column defined as [autonumber] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL which is mapped in my .hbm.xml like: <id name="Id" column="autonumber" type="int"> <generator class="identity" /> </id> When calling session.Save() updates are successful committed to the database. When adding a versioning trigger I however get the error this id generator generates Int64, Int32, Int16 of type IdentifierGenerationException. The trigger is defined as: ALTER TRIGGER [dbo].[CatchUpdates_NVM_FDK_Kenmerken] ON [dbo].[NVM_FDK_Kenmerken] INSTEAD OF UPDATE AS BEGIN SET NOCOUNT ON UPDATE NVM_FDK_Kenmerken SET idIsActive = 0 WHERE internalId IN (SELECT internalId FROM INSERTED) INSERT INTO dbo.NVM_FDK_Kenmerken ( vestigingNummer , internalId , someOtherColumns, dateInserted, idIsActive ) SELECT vestigingNummer, internalId, someOtherColumns, GETDATE(), 1 FROM INSERTED END What am I doing wrong here? • Wireless connects but can not connect to internet

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 and I'm having trouble connecting to internet via wifi. Ethernet cable works though. So when I log on it auto logs on to my wifi connection at home but after about a minute or so it gives me a popup: network disabled something about .local domain and something about Avahi network (sorry if you need more on what the popup says I will reboot and look at it again). I am using Atheros wireless card. My laptop is Asus G73SW and on the forum at notebookreview.com G73SW Owner's Lounge people said they had no problem with connecting via wifi from install. Please help me because I would love to keep using this beautiful OS.

• What is a good way to keep track of strings for dictionary lookups?

  I am working through the Windows 8 app tutorial. They have some code about saving app data like so: private void NameInput_TextChanged(object sender, TextChangedEventArgs e) { Windows.Storage.ApplicationDataContainer roamingSettings = Windows.Storage.ApplicationData.Current.RoamingSettings; roamingSettings.Values["userName"] = nameInput.Text; } I have worked with C# in the past and found that things like using constant string values (like "userName" in this case) for keys could get messy because auto-complete did not work and it was easy to forget if I had made an entry for a setting before and what it was called. So if I don't touch code for awhile I end up accidentally creating multiple entries for the same value that are named slightly differently. Surely there is a better way to keep track of the strings that key to those values. What is a good solution to this problem?

• How to add a printer in gnome-shell

  I'm using Gnome Shell (although I'm not sure whether the "Printers" app is part of that or just part of Gnome). I go to "Printers" from the overview, click the + button on the bottom left, choose network and then see a message "FirewallD is not running. Network printer detection needs services mdns, ipp, ipp-client and samba-client enabled on firewall.". It's not auto detected anything. There's an Address box and a Search by Address tickbox, but neither seem to do anything. I'm frustrated because I know all the details of the printer, but have nowhere to put them in. Automation is supposed to make things easier, no? For example I know the printer is at lpd://10.67.5.3/lp1 but I can't put this in anywhere. Is there a GUI that works, or have I misunderstood how to use it?

I have researched on few options sometime back but couldn't decide which one to use. I am looking for suggestions from the people who already used these tools. docbook: springframework and hibernate use this format and this looks good. but I believe they have customized the default xslt/stylesheet. Can I copy and use their xslt and css (ofcourse with colors and images changed). Can I integrate the doc generation using maven? wiki: this is not friendly to the technical document writers and the documentation doesn't look professional. versioning is also not possible I believe word docs: this is what we use currently but it is hard to link and reuse common documents.   Hey, stack! I'm on charge of building an ASP.NET MVC Document Management System. It have to be able to do basic document management tasks like adding, editing and searching entries and also perform versioning. Anyways, I'm targeting PDF, Office and many image formats as the file attached to each document entry in the database. My question is: What design guidelines do pros follow when building the storage mechanism? Do they store the document files in the file system? Database? How file uploading is handled? I used to upload the files to a temporal location while the user was editing the data and move it to permanent storage when the user confirmed the entry creation. Is this good? Any suggestions on improvement?

Do you know of any statistics about the frequency of exceptions (checked and unchecked) thrown at runtime in typical Java applications? for example: NullPointerException: 25% of all exceptions ClassCastException: 15% of all exceptions etc. 2. Which are the most frequent exceptions according to your own experiences? 3. Would you agree that the NullPointerException is generally the most often thrown exception? I am asking this question in the context of the compiler development of the PPL programming language (www.practical-programming.org). The goal is to auto-detect a maximum of frequent exceptions at compile-time. For example, detecting all potential NullPointerExceptions at compile-time leads to null-safe software which is more reliable.

• Is imposing the same code format for all developers a good idea?

  We are considering to impose a single standard code format in our project (auto format with save actions in Eclipse). The reason is that currently there is a big difference in the code formats used by several (10) developers which makes it harder for one developer to work on the code of another developer. The same Java file sometimes uses 3 different formats. So I believe the advantage is clear (readability = productivity) but would it be a good idea to impose this? And if not, why? UPDATE We all use Eclipse and everyone is aware of the plan. There already is a code format used by most but it is not enforced since some prefer to stick to their own code format. Because of the above reasons some would prefer to enforce it.

• Questions about using git as a backend storage system

  New to git here... I want to commit my personal file share to a git repo (text, docs, images etc). As I make modifications to various files over time, telling git about them along the way, how do go about things so I can: Get out of the business of traditional fulls/incrementals. Be able to do a point-in-time file or full clone restore. Basically, I want something granular, such that, if I make an edit to a file 5 times on a particular day. I will have 5 versions of that file that I can refer back to- forever. Or even just derive the a full copy of everything the way it looked on that particular day. I am currently using rsync for remote incremental syncs (no file versioning).

• How can I make the unity sidebar visible permanently (as in, in all circumstances)?

  Yes, I have seen the other similar questions; if this is a duplicate please link me to the question that answer this, because none of them appear to; all appear to only address (1) of the two issues below: There are TWO times when the sidebar will magically vanish: 1) By default when you move your cursor off it and focus on a different app. This is fixable by setting the auto hide behaviour, as described here: How to make the Unity launcher always visible? 2) When you move a window over / under it, or maximize a window. Even when the autohide setting is 'never' this will cause the sidebar to mysterious decide to hide itself. In fact, it doesn't appear what settings you change, this behaviour refuses to change. This is extremely undesired behaviour. I'm using a stock standard 11.10 install.

• What does Enable/Disable mean in Bing's URL Normalization feature?

  I'm in Bing Webmaster Tools, under Index URL Normalization. Many parameters are listed in the table with 3 other columns: Status, Source, Date. The "Source" column says "Webmaster" where I have added parameters, and "Bing" where I assume the parameter has been auto-detected. "Date" is probably the last date it detected the parameter. I've tried searching the help files but I can't find what the Status column means. The top of the page says: This feature allows you to specify query parameters for Bing’s crawler to ignore. But it's not clear whether "Enable" or "Disable" is related to this, and if so what happens in each case. Does anyone know?

• How to do a login page for third party service without letting them sign on?

  We have a unique situation (at least for me, first time seeing this). We have a web form where accountants can fill in requests and that part is taken care of. But after their login we redirect them to a third-party website where we need more information from them. The process is crazy right now since we have to give our account login info to all people filing with us. So is there a way in PHP or any other solution where we can after that form on our website auto login with our information to that third party website in a way that our credentials are not visible to the users using the service?

• wired connection not being recognised in ubuntu 10.04 lts

  I have windows7 installed on my C drive and ubuntu 10.04 lts on my D drive. When I plud the lan cable (ethernet cable) onto the ethernet card of my laptop, windows7 identifies the network correctly without the need for any manual settings and connects me to the network correctly. Unfortunately, in ubuntu, even after plugging in the cable, nothing happens (on the network side). It is only scanning for wireless networks it seems, and doesnt bother about the wired networks. I tried adding a new wired connection and manually entered the physical address which was displayed when i connected to the network using windows. i entered the phy address, and told it to use auto dhcp and saved the dialog bog in ubuntu network connection. Still there is no change, and ubuntu doesnt seem to recognise anything. please let me know how to work with wired connections using ubuntu, and why my wired cable is not being recognized in ubuntu. thanks. PS: I am pretty new to ubuntu/ linux :)

• Managing changes in memory-based data format

  So I've been using a compact data type in c++, and saving from memory or loading from the file involves just copying the bits of memory in and out. However, the obvious drawback of this is that if you need to add/remove elements on the data, it becomes kind of messy. There's also problems with versioning, suppose you distribute a program which uses version A of the data, and then the next day you make version B of it, and then later on version C. I suppose this can be solved by using something like xml or json. But suppose you can't do that for technical reasons. What is the best way to do this, apart from having to make different if cases etc (which would be pretty ugly, I'd imagine)

• Drive space hungry NoSQL's databases

  I've tested NoSQL databases like CouchDB, MongoDB and Cassandra and observed tendence to absorbing very large amount of drive space relative to inserted key-value pairs. When comparing CouchDB and MySQL schemaless databases CouchDB is consuming much more drive space than MySQL. I know about that key-value DBs by default are versioning and have long uuid and need key optimalisation - the comparison was between about 15 mln rows in MySQL and 1-5 mln documents listed NoSQL DB's. My question is : Is there any NoSQL with good compaction / compression of data? So that I can have NoSQL database with a size closer to 5GB than 50GB?

• Display not using xorg.conf?

  How can I force my PC to use the xorg.conf file ? I have it set up correctly and it is located at etc/x11/xorg.conf but it is ignored by at start up, I know the file is valid as I created it using nvidia-settings. • Django 1.2 crash course needed

  I know Python but I've never used Django. What do I need to know about Django 1.2 to port my typical PHP CRUD web application in one weekend? (Yes I've read Joel Spolsky's Netscape article :-)) I'm reading this tutorial right now and it's excellent. I'm already playing around with inspectdb to generate my models from the existing schema. I'm planning to use the following features of Django this weekend: Fragment caching Static asset versioning (for far future expires) Schema migrations (or whatever they're called in Django) Auto-admin (and customize it later) The test framework ...other stuff I probably don't know about yet I'm familiar with all these concepts in other languages/frameworks, except for the ORM which I've never used. I know SQL pretty well though. Any links, sage bits of advice, gotchas, stuff not mentioned in the (excellent) tutorial/docs, or stuff that is mentioned but warrants repeating == very welcome. • When Ubuntu Server restarts eth0 Doesn't come back up

  Every time I restart my Ubuntu Server 11.10 I can't ssh into it because ETH0 doesn't come up automatically. I never had this problem before upgrading to 11.10. I have to login to the server and start the ETH0 manually. I would appreciate it any help. Thanks. • fglrx installation without success - gl_conf issue

  I followed the steps of this guide. I've installed the drivers without any problems with sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb. The next step is Generate a new /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, but I can't do this due to the following reason: When I enter sudo aticonfig --initial -f the terminal show me this output: sudo: aticonfig: command not found This problem is caused by an error with the symbolics links into the fglrx directory. Look at this section, where you can see -how to fix it- but it doesn't work for me. Why it doesn't? Because after I enter sudo update-alternatives --auto gl_conf the terminal show me this: update-alternatives: error: no alternatives for gl_conf. What I have to do to fix this problem? GC: ATI RadeonHD 6670

  Hi, I think a community wiki on problems (and solutions) when installing Ubuntu (10.10) on a Thinkpad Edge 11 would be nice (because I just got one ;)). I'll contribute with my own problems and solutions, and hope others will join too. Thinkwiki entry for the Edge 11 Known problems: No wifi-driver, solution: answer #1, answer #2 Fan is load, even though it's on auto. No solution. Thinkfan is a possible solution, but correction values for sensors should be supplied (mapping sensors to specific areas). Also, one sensor is between -100C and +100C - maybe some kind of deactivation would help.
