  • What is the typical maximum number of database connections for Oracle running on Windows server ?

    We are maintaining a database server that serve a large number of clients. Each client typically running serveral client-applications. The total number of connections to the database server (Oracle 9i) is reaching 800 connections on peak load. The windows 2003 server is starting to run out of memory. We are now planning to move to 64bit Windows in order to gain higher memory capability. As a developer I suggest moving to multi-tier architecture with conneciton pooling, which I believe is a natural solution to this problem. However, in order to support my idea, I want the information on: what exactly is the typical number of connections allowed for Oracle database ? What is the problem when the number connections is too high ? Too much memory comsumption ? or too many sockets opened ? or too many context switching between threads ? To be a little bit specific, how could Oracle Forms application scale to thousand of users without facing this problem ? Shall Oracle RAC applied to this case ? I'm sure the answer to this question should depend on quite a number of factors, like the exact spec of the hardware being used. I'm expecting a rough estimation or some experience from the real world.

  • Java games applet not connecting to Yahoo

    Hi. I am trying to play a Y! game which use a java applet. The applet displays the message: Alert. Unable to connect to server. One of four things could have caused this: 1) You are behind a firewall. 2) You are not connected to the internet. 3) The games server is down. 4) You have a stale page in your cache. I have added an exception to the Windows firewall for java.exe. I am obviously connected to the Internet okay. The games server is not down when I am at home. I doubt it is down when I am at work. I have never successfully loaded this page before, so I doubt I have a stale page in cache. Could it be the corporate firewall? Nothing else in my web browser has been blocked before. Maybe the java applet connects on a different port to the browser. What should I test?

I also made the IP static and I can access the server in my office premises easily, but when I try to access my server from my home it is not working. I know I have to make some changes and need to install some firewall (I had just gone through with a couple of posts) but I guess an expert advise will save my time here.

  • Unable to SSH into ESXi 4.1 host - "Access Denied"

    I am unable to SSH into an existing ESXi server. I have a user which is in the "root" and "users" group and is able to connect via vSphere. However after enabling "Remote support (SSH)", attempting to connect by putty and entering my username/password when prompted I am presented with an "Access Denied" message. I have run through the options presented at this KB article to no avail. I have taken down the firewall on the machine (it is remote) temporarily to check if this helped - no change. The username/password are definitely correct and I can obviously get connectivity if I am presented with the username/password prompt. I am at a bit of a loss what else I can try. Thanks all

  • Solaris 10 very slow ssh file transfers

    Trying to copy a few TBs betweek Solaris 10 u9 systems A single scp only seems to be able to transfer around 120MB/min, over a 1GB network. If I run multiple scp copies, each one will do 120MB/min, so it is not the network as far as I can see. Any hints on how to tweak the Solaris settings to open a bigger pipe. Have the same problem with another piece of software that unfortunately does not seem to be able to be split into separate processes.

  • Wireless won't connect at home but works elsewhere

    My laptop connects via a wire into the modem fine and it works without any problems but it wont connect to it wirelessly, when I've taken it out places it connects fine in wifi area's! Also my son has his Wii connected wirelessly to it from his room upstairs without any problems, so I'm not sure where the problem lies, it hasn't worked since we got the modem it did on our old one and phoning Sky is just a waste of time they dont seem to know either and I just keep getting passed round departments repeating myself!

  • connected ethernet without disabling wireless, now I have *two* LAN ip's?

    Ok I'm on ubuntu 11.04, not too knowledgeable about network stuff. Usually people ask things like "wired works but wireless does not!". In m y case, I'm just curious about what it means to have both of them seemingly connected. In 'ipconfig' in shell I see that I have 192.168.1.2 for the wireless AND 192.168.1.3 for the ethernet. What does this mean for applications, does one of the two get precedence? It seems like my pages load slightly faster, so perhaps the ethernet is being used, but I could be imagining the speedup...

    I have my work system on the ip range 172.16.xx.yy, and I have my personal system on the ip range 10.0.xx.yy. Both of them, however, are on the same network of my University, but on different LANs/VLANs (i hope i used the right word here). How can I remotely connect to my work system from my PC, given that both use private IP addresses? If such a thing is not possible with current set up, what minimal changes are required for it?

  • Internet Connectivity... Help please!

    Hi. My Laptop is having trouble connecting to my wireless router. Other laptops are using the wireless, but it's not reached capacity. The laptop recognises (with a strong signal) that there is wireless internet, and I can connect via the router with a cable because this happens automatically. My problem is this... When I click "connect" (for example in the network and sharing centre), the dialogue box closes and nothing else happens - as though "connect" is being read as "exit". I am running Vista on a Toshiba Satellite Pro P300. Any help would be very much appreciated, Thanks

  • "ssh root@server" hangs indefinitely long

    Hi, Sometimes my ssh client will take forever to login. This happens when the server is not responding (overloaded, killed processed, ...). My automated scripts will then fail because the ssh process will never exit. Is there a ssh configuration value to set a timeout in order to fail if ssh can't login after a predefined number of seconds? I know there are knobs on the server side, but I have to set this on the client side as the sshd process is not responding, or responding incorrectly. Thanks!

    I bought a used 15" ViewSonic LCD monitor (VP150m) and noticed that it has a 3.5mm connector on the back labeled “touch i/o”. I’m trying to figure out how to use the touch function but am having trouble finding anything useful. First, I cannot find any information on what kind of cable it uses (TS, TRS, TRRS, etc.), or how to connect it to the computer. Second, I cannot find touch drivers for it—though I can find a page that mentions how easy it is to install them. Does anyone have any information on using the touchscreen function of the VP150m?   • Verizon overbilling me ?

    I have verizon air card for my internet. Which is called vz manager. I have had it for about a year. Keeping within my usage allowance the whole time until 3 months ago, when my bill came in my 5,000 g allowance was ran to 18,000. It has continued to do so through the last 3 months. My usage reset itself yesterday for the new month. I got on google for about 5 minutes and chatted for about an hour yesterday online. Mind you that I have never done anything any different then i do everyday. I do not download music or watch videos on my computer, nothing like that. Well since last night a 8 pm my usage sayd 1109.525 gb. ALREADY! For being on the internet for an hour with no downloads. What could be causing this, please thrown me some ideas. Verizon is checking on the problem, but that usually doesnt get me the answer i want. Can someone be hacking my card and using internet through it, has told me that that is not possible, however I think with the internet anytihng is possible.

  • Windows 8 apps not connecting to internet with USB dongle/modem

    The question pretty much says it all. I have Windows 8 Professional 64-bit and my main/only method of getting connected to the internet is to use this USB dongle/modem I have. Now it works perfectly, but when I go into the Windows "store" app it keeps on saying that I'm not connected to the web. In fact this happens for all "apps", they all think I'm not connected to the web when I actually am. Normal desktop applications e.g. browsers run fine. Is this a bug that has still not been resolved or is there some setting I need to go mess with? Thanks in advance!

    The setup: Ubuntu with local Vmware Workstation 10 (everything works locally) Connects(File- Connect to Server) Debian server with the same Vmware Workstation 10 (Windows XP Guest) Debian setup does not allow raw disk access nor shared folders (most options does not exist) No shared folder No physical disk option I use root user for this machine. Default install. I've tried to add shared folder from command line - it does not work. How to enable shared folders or raw disk access? I have created new Windows 8 64 bit template from scratch - I cannot use physical HDD either, and no SharedFolder option. I think this is something about security policy of remote server.

  • Mysql too many connections but not visible in fullprocess list

    I got a big problem, I guess it's something like a dos attack but I am not sure. Since this morning, my database is very slow and gives me 7/10 times a too many connections error or tries to login with www-data user (as following up of the too many connections error?). I tried to locate the issue by mysql command line with 'show fullprocess list' but it gives me just one response back and that 'me'. What can I do about this? The websites are still running ok, but mysql is overused I guess.

  • Connections to Cotendo CDN servers are unreliable

    I've been having a lot of trouble viewing certain websites - Gawker Media, DeviantArt, etc. - and through further investigation they all appear to be using a CDN called Cotendo. On my machine, and only this one, connections reset themselves midway through the download most of the time. This is not browser-specific; even wget (Cygwin) is unable to download anything without retrying a few times. This happens inside virtual machines as well. Unfortunately, I'm pretty stumped on why this is happening. My hosts file is empty (except for a couple LAN-specific things) and I've checked a few different DNS servers, but I can't really think of anything else to try. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Java multithreaded server - each connection returns data. Processing on main thread?

    I am writing a client with an integrated server that should wait indefinitely for new connections - and handle each on a Thread. I want to process the received byte array in a system wide available message handler on the main thread. However, currently the processing is obviously done on the client thread. I've looked at Futures, submit() of ExecutorService, but as I create my Client-Connections within the Server, the data would be returned to the Server thread. How can I return it from there onto the main thread (in a synchronized packet store maybe?) to process it without blocking the server?   • (closed) nodejs responding an image (via pipe and response.end()) leads into strange behaviour

    What the Problem was: I had 2 different writeStreams! If WriteStram#1 is closed, the second should be closed too and then it all should be piped... BUT node is asynchronious so while one has been closed, the other one hasn't. Even the stream.end() was called... well you always should wait for the close event! thx guys for your help! I am at my wit's end. I used this code to pipe an image to my clients: req.pipe(fs.createReadStream(__dirname+'/imgen/cached_images/' + link).pipe(res)) it does work but sometimes the image is not transferred completely. But no error is thrown neither on client side (browser) nor on server side (node.js). My second try was var img = fs.readFileSync(__dirname+'/imgen/cached_images/' + link); res.writeHead(200, { 'Content-Type' : 'image/png' }); res.end(img, 'binary'); but it leads to the same strange behaviour...     Router reconfigures PC's and they can no longer access the internet via hardwired connection to DSL Modem. Hardware Information: Buffalo Wireless Router/access point, Model: WZR-HP-G300NH-AP DSL Modem: Generic (actually not sure of manufacture). Service Provider: TOT (Thailand) Laptop-1: Windows XP and Belkin PCMIA Network Card Laptop-2: Windows XP unknown network card & Wifi Laptop-3: Windows 7 unknown network card & Wifi Outline of Problem/actions taken: After a recent power failure the router and laptop-1 connected to router were no longer able to access the internet. Actions taken to try and recover internet access: Using Laptop-1 tried to configure Router with PPPoe settings using software from Router Manufacture. During the installation process a Timeout error was experienced, unable to connect to WAN. Used Internet Explorer to communicate directly with Router using IP address. Changed settings to use PPPoe settings given by ISP. Router was not able to communicate with Internet. Repeated steps 1-4 again with no success. Reset Router and DSL modem. Repeated steps 1-4 again still no success. Tried connecting Laptop-1 directly to DSL to gain access to internet to research problem. No Network connection with DSL could be established…connection would be established for a second and then be lost and didn’t appear long enough to actually connect to DSL. Replugged LAN back into Router and connection was regained with laptop-1. Replugged Laptop-1 directly into DSL and again unable to establish network connection. Uninstalled network card and all of its drivers on Laptop-1. Reinstalled network card and drivers and tried connecting directly to DSL. Still unable to make network connection. Plugged DSL into Laptop-3 and Internet connection was established. Being Laptop-3 does not have a CD-Rom, Laptop-2 was tried to connect to the router. With Laptop-2 steps 1-7 ended up being repeated without success. Tried plugging Laptop-2 directly into DSL and again no network connection could be established. Using Laptop-3 with a direct connection to DSL downloaded latest Router FW. Installed router FW using Laptop-1. Tired the installation process again without success. Being desperate reinstalled OS on Laptop-1 still not success. Tried using “ipconfig” with router to see what was going on without success. With laptop-1 connected to DSL went through the “ipconfig /…” inputs to see if anything made a difference. Being the network card was not able to make a connection this provide very little information “media disconnected”. So now I have a router and two laptops which are unable to connect to the internet and sure could use some advice/help.

    When attempting to use HttpWebRequest to retrieve a page from my dev server, I get a web exception: The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel." The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure... The url I'm attempting to read from is a plain-old http://myserver.com/mypage.asp - no SSL. The production server has a valid certificate so this shouldn't be an issue, but our dev server doesn't. Help!
