  • What characteristic of a software determines its operational scope?

    - by Dark Star1
How can I classify whether a software is a medium with the ability to grow into an enterprise level software or whether it is already there? And how should I use the information to choose the appropriate language/tool to create the software? At first I was asking whether Java or PHP is the best tool to design enterprise level software, however I've suddenly realized that I am unable to put the software I'm tasked with redesigning into the proper scope so I'm lost. Edit: I guess I'm looking for tell tale signs in software that may tip the favour towards enterprise level type software in the sense of functional and operational characteristics; functional: what it does (multi-functional), Architectural characteristics such as highly modular. operational: multi-sourced and multi-homed, databases, e.t.c. To be honest the reason I ask is because I'm skeptical about the use of PhP to design a piece of employee and partial accounting software. I'm more tipping towards the use of JSP and an hmvc framework such as JSF, wickets, e.t.c. where as the other guy wants to go the PhP way although I'm not experienced with PhP, as far as I know it's not an OO oriented language hence my skepticsm towards it.

  • SQL SERVER – What is the Maximum Relational Database Size Supported by Single Instance?

    - by Pinal Dave
I often get asked following question? “How much data SQL Server can handle?” Every single time when I get this question – I ask back following question - “How much data your storage system can handle?” The reason I ask this question back is because in reality for enterprise systems the limitation of storage is no more an issue. The Matter of the fact most of the database is now a days limited by the size of the storage system. SQL Server is enterprise system and it is very mature product. Even though if you still want to know what is the actual limit here is the answer. SQL Server 2008R2, 2012 and 2014 have maximum capacity of 524 PB (Petabyte) in the Enterprise, BI and Standard edition. SQL Server Express has a limitation of 10 GB due to its nature. I guess, now when you look at my question it will make sense that it is all depending on the size of your storage system. I personally believe at this point of time 524 PB is quite a huge data, but we never know after 10 years when we read this blog post, we all may think what was I thinking actually. • Five Ideas: Project Management

    - by Sylvie MacKenzie, PMP
Except from Profit Magazine “For everyone to put on the project manager hat and standardize the way every single thing is done means that now the whole organization is on the same page as to what needs to occur from the time a hurricane hits Haiti and when a boat pulls in to unload supplies.” —Rich D’Addario, consulting project manager in the Primavera Global Business Unit at Oracle, on helping AmeriCares deliver aid to Haiti “Primavera P6 Analytics generates information that can help organizations improve their utilization and trim down overall operating costs. But more importantly, it gives organizations improved visibility.” —Yasser Mahmud, vice president of product strategy and industry marketing in Oracle’s Primavera Global Business Unit “Organizations are constantly looking for ways to improve the speed and precision of their decisions and work without creating environments and systems that limit their personnel through rigid structures and inflexible processes. The latest release of Primavera Portfolio Management meets this demand by further streamlining processes and supporting enhanced decision-making, helping drive better value from portfolios. In addition, the new UI clearly demonstrates Oracle's commitment to providing a seamlessly integrated enterprise project portfolio management product suite.” —Mike Sicilia, senior vice president, Oracle's Primavera “Make it a business project, not an IT project. All levels of functional management must have ownership, responsibility, and accountability for the success of the implementation.” —from Eaton Operations Services Manager Marcos Baccetto's 9 Project Management Tips “AEC firms must strategically pursue standardization opportunities in the project management area while preserving the spirit of entrepreneurism and flexibility at an individual project manager level. An enterprise technology platform doesn't only help with standardization of key project management processes across the enterprise; it also improves performance management, team collaboration and client specific reporting at an individual project level.” —Maneesh Chhabra is a director of Industry Strategy and Insight at Oracle

  • Podcast Show Notes: By Any Other Name: Governance and Architecture

    - by Bob Rhubart
The OTN ArchBeat Podcast returns from a brief summer hiatus with a three-part conversation about IT architecture and governance. My guests for this conversation are Eric Stephens , an Oracle Enterprise architect and a frequent guest on this program. Joining Eric on the panel is Tim Hall , Senior Director of product management for the Oracle Enterprise Repository, Oracle Service Registry, and Oracle Application Integration Architecture. Tim made his first appearance on ArchBeat as panelist on the recent program featuring Thomas Erl. The Conversation Listen to Part 1:Why it's important to revive the dormant conversation about IT governance. Listen to Part 2 (Sept 19): Balancing functional, technical, operational requirements to meet the challenge of defining appropriate governance "guardrails." Listen to Part 3 (Sept 26): Bringing IT architecture out of the ivory tower to make governance a less intimidating, more collaborative process. Additional Resources Leveraging Governance to Sustain Enterprise Architecture Efforts, an Oracle white paper by Eric Stephens. SOA, Cloud, and Service Technologies, a transcript of an ArchBeat interview with Thomas Erl, Tim Hall, and Demed L'Her, in which Tim says the following about governance: "For a long time people have argued that SOA governance is sort of an awkward name, no one wanted to be audited. There's 50% of the world that think, yes, we're going to have to tops down initiative to address this and there's 50% of the world that says that it feels like a heavy weight process that I want no part of. So what I think we should do is change the name…"

  • SOA Starting Point: Methods for Service Identification and Definition

As more and more companies start to incorporate a Service Oriented Architectural design approach into their existing enterprise systems, it creates the need for a standardized integration technology. One common technology used by companies is an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). An ESB, as defined by Progress Software, connects and mediates all communications and interactions between services. In essence an ESB is a form of middleware that allows services to communicate with one another regardless of framework, environment, or location. With the emergence of ESB, a new emphasis is now being placed on approaches that can be used to determine what Web services should be built. In addition, what order should these services be built? In May 2011, SOA Magazine published an article that identified 10 common methods for identifying and defining services. SOA’s Ten Common Methods for Service Identification and Definition: Business Process Decomposition Business Functions Business Entity Objects Ownership and Responsibility Goal-Driven Component-Based Existing Supply (Bottom-Up) Front-Office Application Usage Analysis Infrastructure Non-Functional Requirements  Each of these methods provides various pros and cons in regards to their use within the design process. I personally feel that during a design process, multiple methodologies should be used in order to accurately define a design for a system or enterprise system. Personally, I like to create a custom cocktail derived from combining these methodologies in order to ensure that my design fits with the project’s and business’s needs while still following development standards and guidelines. Of these ten methods, I am particularly fond of Business Process Decomposition, Business Functions, Goal-Driven, Component-Based, and routinely use them in my designs.  Works Cited Hubbers, J.-W., Ligthart, A., & Terlouw , L. • Three New Videos on Social Development

    - by Bob Rhubart
By now it should be clear to even the most tenacious Luddite that the social media phenomenon is no mere fad. Those ubiquitous icons for Facebook and Twitter and other social networks are little beacons of disruptive change signalling yet again that the 20th century is over, dude. And that presents an opportunity for software developers with the necessary insight and expertise to tap into and expand social platforms for forward-thinking organizations. If you're a developer and you're interested in exploiting these emerging opportunities you'll want to check out three new videos that focus on software development for social platforms. Developing with Facebook: An Introduction to Social Design James Pearce, Facebook's head of Mobile Developer Relations, provides an overview of the Facebook platform and the underlying APIs that are available to the developer community. • Basic is Best

    - by Eric A. Stephens
Fellow foodies will recognize the recent movement towards "farm-to-table" restaurants. These venues attempt to simplify their menus and source ingredients as close to the source as possible. I had the opportunity to dine at such a restaurant the other evening. I was gushing about the appetizer to my server when she described the preparation for the item and then punctuated her comments with "basic is best". I reminded my fellow enterprise architect diners there was an architecture lesson in that statement. They rolled their eyes and chuckled. But they also knew I was right. I'm reminded of Frederick Brooks' book The Mythical Man Month and his latest The Design of Design. The former must read book talks about complexity. But he refrains from damning all complexity. The world we live in and enterprises we strive to transform with enterprise architecture are complicated organisms, much like the human body. But sometimes a simple solution is the best approach. Fewer applications (think: portfolio rationalization). Fewer components. Fewer lines of code. Whatever level of abstraction you are working at, less is more. I'm reminded of the enterprise architecture principle "Control Technical Diversity". At one firm I created pithy catch phrases for each principles. I named this one "Less is More". But perhaps another variation is what my server said the other night, "Basic is Best".

  • Could these people get arrested? [closed]

    - by Vinicius Horta
I have seen many of what is called 'private servers' mmorpg (multiplayer online games), which uses stolen sources, modified executable, clients and server. People launch up their own server using VPS or dedicated server and distribute online service among players disclaiming it has educational purposes only, saying they are studying the game engine and selling items for players disclaming it as 'donations', so it seems like they are getting donations to keep studying. We all know it's a comercial method. All of it is copyrighted material from enterprise ABCD. (ABCD = Fictional name, I'm not mentioning names). At their website they include the following: "Private Server XXXX" does not allow/support any conection to any company/organization associated with the game "XXXX". If you are anyway affiliated with enterprise "XXXXXXX", or any other company/organization associated with the game "XXXX" you may not view/open/read/execute/play/download any part of "Private Server XXXX" nor view "Private Server XXXX" website, if any company/organization requests you to investigate our website/server, you may not view "Private SERVER XXXX" or execute any action mentioned above. Any person caught disobeting this disclaimer will be punish to the fulleste extent of law. Can this guys get arrested? Do they disclaimer works? If I'm owner of enterprise X and I know people stole my source and are using them but they have such disclaimer I'm not allowed to investigate them?

  • Is there really anything to gain with complex design? [duplicate]

    - by SB2055
This question already has an answer here: What is enterprise software, exactly? 8 answers I've been working for a consulting firm for some time, with clients of various sizes, and I've seen web applications ranging in complexity from really simple: MVC Service Layer EF DB To really complex: MVC UoW DI / IoC Repository Service UI Tests Unit Tests Integration Tests But on both ends of the spectrum, the quality requirements are about the same. In simple projects, new devs / consultants can hop on, make changes, and contribute immediately, without having to wade through 6 layers of abstraction to understand what's going on, or risking misunderstanding some complex abstraction and costing down the line. In all cases, there was never a need to actually make code swappable or reusable - and the tests were never actually maintained past the first iteration because requirements changed, it was too time-consuming, deadlines, business pressure, etc etc. So if - in the end - testing and interfaces aren't used rapid development (read: cost-savings) is a priority the project's requirements will be changing a lot while in development ...would it be wrong to recommend a super-simple architecture, even to solve a complex problem, for an enterprise client? Is it complexity that defines enterprise solutions, or is it the reliability, # concurrent users, ease-of-maintenance, or all of the above? I know this is a very vague question, and any answer wouldn't apply to all cases, but I'm interested in hearing from devs / consultants that have been in the business for a while and that have worked with these varying degrees of complexity, to hear if the cool-but-expensive abstractions are worth the overall cost, at least while the project is in development.
