• What is the the maximum time for a user to return to Google for the visit to be flagged up as a bounce in GA?

  I know that Google measures bounce rates by how fast a user returns to the results page after clicking-through to a website. Roughly what is the maximum duration of the visit for the user to then return for it to be considered a bounce? i.e. <5 seconds, <30 seconds? I'm mainly interested as it appears a lot of users clicking through my PPC adverts (Adwords) are bouncing, despite my ads having a high quality score and the page's being entirely related to the adverts copy and at as best tied to what I think user's may be searching for from the key phrases I've selected so the high bounce rate (100% on some keywords) seems a bit strange. If a bounce isn't determined by time, but simply whether a user returns to the SERP after visiting my site or not after any amount of time that would make more sense but the average duration of visit for my keywords with a 100% bounce rate in GA is 00:00:00, which suggests a user immediately returned to the SERPs, which again, is odd. Is my GA data being skewed by https or anything like that? Scratching my head here.

• VLC Ati Radeon 6870 Ubuntu 12.04 image skewed flicker

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with ATI Radeon 6870 connected to my 40' Sharp TV. The video image is slightly jigged, like breaking a bit and slightly delayed. It just isn't smooth. The computer is very fast, like i7 with 12gb ram.   Hi all! We are here again to intorduce you some of our new NetBeans 7.3 features. Today we'll show you some another Twig improvements. So let's start! Code Templates First feature is about Code Templates. We added some basic templates to improve your Editor experience. You will be really fast with it! If someone don't know what Code Templates are, they are piece of code (snippet) which is inserted into editor after typing its abbreviation and pressing Tab key (or another one which you define in Tools -> Options -> Editor -> Code Templates -> Expand Template on) to epxand it. All default Twig Code Templates can be found in Tools -> Options -> Editor -> Code Templates -> Twig Markup. You can add your custom templates there as well. Note: Twig Markup code templates have to be expanded inside Twig delimiters (i.e. { and }). If you try to expand them outside of delimiters, it will not work, because then you are in HTML context. If you want to add a template which will contain Twig delimiter too, you have to add it directly into Tools -> Options -> Editor -> Code Templates -> HTML/XHTML. Don't add them into Twig File, it will not work. Interpolation Coloring The second, minor, feature is, that we know how to colorize Twig Interpolation. • Internet is far slower in Ubuntu than Windows 7 on dual-booted machine

  Edit: I'll leave the original post as-is, but after further investigation, it appears that the problem is something to do with my wi-fi card. Speeds are normal when I connect via cable. Edit 2: Problem was solved. It was something to do with the wireless card drivers. I normally use Windows 7 on my laptop and have internet speeds that are normally about 15-20 Mb/s. I have recently dual-booted with Ubuntu 12.10, and have noticed that internet speeds are drastically slower in Ubuntu. When tested, speeds range from 0.2-2 Mb/s, although occasionally being significantly faster than that or even stopping completely for short periods of time. I've also noticed that when first booting into Ubuntu, speeds start fairly fast, and drop to incredibly slow with a few seconds to a few minutes. There's still some possibility that the issue may be with my ISP, as things seem slower than usual even in Windows, but I suspect that it is related to Ubuntu, as things are far slower in Ubuntu than in Windows. I'm wondering, what could be the cause of this? Potentially relevant information: -I've dual booted before on this machine with earlier versions of Ubuntu (different ISP at the time) with no problem. • What should happen at the start of a software project startup?

  A quick introduction My college semesters include a 8 week project working for an actual company with a software need in order to get some much needed practical experience. I have just started such a project with 5 other students. We're required to spend roughly 40 hours a week per student on this project. We're working with SCRUM as the software development method, this was assigned by our teachers. The question Day one of the project just ended which has created some questions for me as to how to start a project in the 'real world'. Our first day included working on a project planning document (not sure what the English term is), creating a appointment with the company for an introduction and the opportunity to start specifying the requirements and setting up some standards for the behavior within the group. However these items didn't take that long to finish. We've made some concrete plans for tomorrow and the day after we'll meet the company. This still leaves several hours of 'work-time' unspent. Is it usual not being able to fill every hour of a day for work at the start of a project or are we simply too inexperienced to see what work needs to be done at this stage of a project, or are we, perhaps, going through the above list too fast? How does this work in the 'real world'? Do you spend your time wondering 'what should I do now', or do you have a clear view of what you're supposed to do at that moment?

• Installing Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1

  As has become customary when the product team releases a new patch, SP or version I like to document the install. This post seams almost redundant as I had no problems, but I think that is as valuable to other thinking of installing the Service Pack as all the problems that we sometimes get. As per Brian's post I am Installing Visual Studio Team Foundation Server Service Pack 1 first and indeed as this is a single server local deployment I need to install both. If I only install one it will leave the other product broken. Figure: Hopefully this will be more uneventful It takes a little while for your system to be checked to see what components need updating. On my main computer this was pretty quick, but on the laptop it took some time. Figure: There are a lot of components to update With this update also comes an update to .NET as well as many other components. Figure: I downloaded the full 1.5GB’s, but you could do a web install It depends on how good you internet connection is to how long it would take to download, but as I am now in the US I decided not to trust the internet connection speeds. It took around 30-40 minutes to download the full thing which is a little slow. Figure: I did not need to download, but that would increase the install time So on my main computer again this was fast, but again on my netbook this took a little while. Figure: The actual install took around 30-40 minutes (2 hours on netbook) I was pretty impressed with the speed of the install, and as Team Explore is now out of the box with Visual Studio 2010 I don’t get the problem of the SP being installed before Team Explorer and having a disjointed experience Figure: As I suspected, no problems with the install Figure: Checking in Visual Studio shows that all the servicing points were successful This was an easy experience even if the SP was over 1.5GB’s to download Hopefully I will be discovering things that work better for a good while to come, as well as not seeing holes in the product that I had no encountered yet. • Antenna Aligner Part 8: It's Alive!!!

  Finally the day has come, Antenna Aligner v1.0.1 has been uploaded to the AppStore and . "Waiting for review" .. . fast forward 7 days and much checking of emails later WOO HOO! Now what? So I set my facebook page to go live  https://www.facebook.com/AntennaAligner, and started by sending messages to my mates that have iphones! Amazingly a few of them bought it! Similarly some of my colleagues were also kind enough to support me and downloaded it too! Unfortunately the only way I knew they had bought is was from them telling me, as the iTunes connect data is only updated daily at about midday GMT. This is a shame, surely they could provide more granular updates throughout the day? Although I suppose once an app has been out in the wild for a while, daily updates are enough. It would, however, be nice to get a ping when you make your first sale! I would have expected more feedback on my facebook page as well, maybe I'm just expecting too much, or perhaps I've configured the page wrong. The new facebook timeline layout is just confusing, and I'm not sure it's all public, I'll check that! So please take a look and see what you think! I would love to get some more feedback/reviews/suggestions... Oh and watch out for the Android version coming soon!

• Best way to blend colors in tile lighting? (XNA)

  I have made a color, decent, recursive, fast tile lighting system in my game. It does everything I need except one thing: different colors are not blended at all: Here is my color blend code: return (new Color( (byte)MathHelper.Clamp(color.R / factor, 0, 255), (byte)MathHelper.Clamp(color.G / factor, 0, 255), (byte)MathHelper.Clamp(color.B / factor, 0, 255))); As you can see it does not take the already in place color into account. color is the color of the previous light, which is weakened by the above code by factor. If I wanted to blend using the color already in place, I would use the variable blend. Here is an example of a blend that I tried that failed, using blend: return (new Color( (byte)MathHelper.Clamp(((color.R + blend.R) / 2) / factor, 0, 255), (byte)MathHelper.Clamp(((color.G + blend.G) / 2) / factor, 0, 255), (byte)MathHelper.Clamp(((color.B + blend.B) / 2) / factor, 0, 255))); This color blend produces inaccurate and strange results. I need a blend that is accurate, like the first example, that blends the two colors together. What is the best way to do this?

• Delaying a Foreach loop half a second

  I have created a game that has a ghost that mimics the movement of the player after 10 seconds. The movements are stored in a list and i use a foreach loop to go through the commands. The ghost mimics the movements but it does the movements way too fast, in split second from spawn time it catches up to my current movement. How do i slow down the foreach so that it only does a command every half a second? I don't know how else to do it. • Ubuntu 13.10 No Sound

  I was running 13.04 since last monday and just today i upgraded to 13.10, in both of these version i have not managed to get my sound working. I have gone into alsamixer and disabled auto mute and the volumes are up. However if somebody thinks they can help me fix this i will gladly follow any steps. • Hydraulics in game

  I'm not completely sure if this would be better in the Physics site or not as this question is more about how hydraulics should work in game as opposed to how they really work (although that is taken into account) - So I apologize if this is in the wrong place. A project we are on, we have a machine with hydraulics that are powered (They don't just look like they move something, they are the only thing moving/turning/lifting something) - However, the hydraulic extends the same speed no matter what it is pushing. So, say there is a 10 ton object attached to one end of the hydraulic and the other end is attached to a plate on the ground. In real life it takes a few seconds to build up pressure depending on how heavy the object is, but in our project the hydraulics don't care about that. It will lift a 100 ton object the same speed as a 10 ton object. We have a way to fake the hydraulic pressurizing by reducing the 'drive amount' (how fast or slow the hydraulic extends) when we sense that it is touching the ground and that does a relatively decent job but we would like to be able to take other things into account like engine speed, ratios, loads, etc. but we aren't too sure what we need to think about. I'm kinda wondering if anyone here has any experience with this and could offer some suggestions on what to take into account?

• Windows 8 BIOS - Boot Ubuntu from External HDD

  My laptop came pre-loaded with Windows 8 64-bit (only storage device is a 128 GB SSD). Since it is my school laptop/I've heard creating a Linux partition alongside Windows 8 is not very wise I installed Ubuntu onto my external hard drive. I have a 500GB external HDD with the following partitions: Main Partition - NFTS - ~400 GB Extension Partition / - ext2 - ~25gb /home - ext2 - ~30gb swap - ext2 - 10gb /boot - ? - 10gb ? = not sure of partition Using the PenDriveLinux installer, I created a LiveUSB version of Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS) on a 4GB USB drive. Using that, I installed Ubuntu onto the external hard-drive, without any errors (or at least none that I was notified of). Using the BIOS settings, I changed the OS-loading order so that it is in this order: My External USB HDD Windows Boot Loader Some other things Therefore, Ubuntu should load from my hard drive first, but it doesn't. Also, my hard drive is in working condition, and it turns on when BIOS starts (there is a light indicator). When I start my laptop, it goes directly to Windows 8 (I have the fast startup setting disabled as well). So, is there any way for me to set it up so that when my HDD is connected, it will automatically load Ubuntu? Thanks in advance!

• Really slow wireless internet on 12.04 with HP dv6 6070ca

  I was recently running the previous version of Ubuntu through Wine, and everything was working great. I decided to upgrade to pangolin when I saw it came out. After upgrading the internet was very slow (the estimated time on the updates was something like 4 days). I thought maybe this had something to do with the Wine installation, so I decided to finally do an actual dual boot. I partitioned my drive all nice and neat, but I made the mistake of connecting to the internet for the installation, and clicking the option to install updates and restricted extras. This was in the morning, circa 6 am. Fast forward to the evening, the installation is frozen at around 75%. In frustration I gave the ol girl a hard shut-down, which effectively rendered my machine useless. I used the thumb drive to reinstall Ubuntu, this time without connecting to the internet. Installed nice and easy, no problems, but the internet is still ridiculously slow. It took me about 20 minutes of frustration and hitting stop and reload repeatedly to even get this question page to open. This is important to me as now Windows won't even boot and I have to use ubuntu for the time being but I can't even bear to turn on my laptop due to the frustration that immediately ensues. Please help! Oh, and I'm relatively new so if there are some terminal commands that spew out info you guys would find useful let me know what they are and I'll post back the information.

  Consider a setup where game clients: have quite small computing resources (mobile devices, smartphones) are all connected to a common router (LAN, hotspot etc) The users want to play a multiplayer game, without an external server. One solution is to host an authoritative server on one phone, which in this case would be also a client. Considering point 1 this solution is not acceptable, since the phone's computing resources are not sufficient. So, I want to design a peer-to-peer architecture that will distribute the game's simulation load among the clients. Because of point 2 the system needn't be complex with regards to optimization; the latency will be very low. Each client can be an authoritative source of data about himself and his immediate environment (for example bullets.) What would be the best approach to designing such an architecture? Are there any known examples of such a LAN-level peer-to-peer protocol? Notes: Some of the problems are addressed here, but the concepts listed there are too high-level for me. Security I know that not having one authoritative server is a security issue, but it is not relevant in this case as I'm willing to trust the clients.   recently i did download big torrent files. (120 Gb). and i need to seed them back to at least 1.5 ratio. my upload speed is 130 Kb/s max. the problem is that i need to seed them as fast as possible. but i browse the web a lot. and browsing with no upload left, can be very frustrating. I'm looking for something like this, torrent are on max. seeding rate, but when the browser needs the bandwidth, it gets it. priority is to web browser, but when not needed, torrent can be at max. i'm aware that i can change torrent client max speed. but doing it manually everytime and every 5 minutes or so, is hard. Info: i'm using firefox/chrome my torrent client is Ktorrent i'm on 11.10 with unity i do have a router, it's a HAG. and i can't access all it's properties. is this possible even? changing the priority in the system monitor for the applications can do the job?the nice value i mean. is there a way to set priority bandwidth usage for different apps? thank you!
