• What are the pros (and cons) of using “Sign in with Twitter/Facebook” for a new website?

  Myself and a friend are looking to launch a little forum site. I’m considering using the “Sign in with Facebook/Twitter” APIs, possibly exclusively (a la e.g. Lanyrd), for user login. I haven’t used either of these before, nor run a site with user logins at all. What are the pros (and cons) of these APIs? Specifically: What benefits do I get as a developer from using them? What drawbacks are there? Do end users actually like/dislike them? Have you experienced any technical/logistical issues with these APIs specifically? Here are the pros and cons I’ve got so far: Pros More convenient for the user (“register” with two clicks, sign in with one) Possibly no need to maintain our own login system  Cons No control over our login process Exclude Facebook/Twitter users who are worried about us having some sort of access to their accounts Users’ accounts on our site are compromised if their Facebook/Twitter accounts are compromised. And if we don’t maintain our own alternative login system: Dependency on Facebook/Twitter for our login system Exclude non-Facebook/non-Twitter users from our site

The FCC recently announced their National Broadband Plan, which is an initiative to improve the Internet infrastructure in the United States and provide higher speeds to everyone. You’ve also undoubtedly heard the news about Google getting into the mix with their program to bring ultra high-speed fiber broadband to 50,000 users in select cities. While we wait for those programs to come into fruition, we thought it would be cool to check out what kinds of speeds you’re getting now. Test Your Internet Connection Speed There are several sites out there you can use to test your Internet speeds, but probably the best site is Speedtest.net. It’s easy to use, and allows you test download and upload speeds to and from various locations in the US and throughout the world. If you already know the speeds you’re getting leave a comment and let us know. If you use Speedtest.com, just keep in mind that our comment system won’t allow you to copy their result links, but you can simply tell us what you get in the results. • [MINI HOW-TO] Remove a Network Computer from Windows Home Server

  One of the cool features of Windows Home Server is the ability to backup and monitor the computers on your network. If you no longer need a machine on to be monitored or backed up, here we show you how to remove it. Remove Computer from WHS The process if straight-forward and basic –Open Windows Home Server Console and click on Computers & Backup. Right-click on the computer that you no longer need and click Remove. You’ll be prompted to verify that you want to remove the machine and delete all of its backup data. Check the box I am sure I want to remove this computer then click the Remove button. That’s all there is to it! The computer and all of its backup data is removed. Remember that if you remove a computer, all of its backup data will be deleted as well. If you no longer have the computer, you probably don’t need the backed up data anyway, but you’ll want to be sure you no longer need it before removing it. • Disable YouTube Comments while using Chrome

  Are you tired of the comments at YouTube being full of profanity or irritating to look at? Now you can watch videos minus the comments with the No YouTube Comments extension for Google Chrome. Before Sometimes reading through the comments at YouTube can be interesting or even fun but at other times they can be a bother to you. It all depends on the contents of the comments (i.e. lots of profanity) and what you would like to have visible while watching videos. • Bootloader error Ubuntu 12.04, system goes to Grub-rescue instead of booting

  I am trying to install ubuntu 12.04 on my system but it is constantly giving me bootloader install fail error. I have tried to lot to solve this issue but reading articles over the internet but still no gain. Firstly since the bootloader was not getting installed I tried to install it on all the alternative paths given in the installer, failing with I selected install ubuntu without bootloader. Then I tried to manually install bootloader via terminal at try ubuntu via grub-install, but I was not able to do that. Then I tried using boot-repair and it was also not able to install the bootloader because after it my system shows grub-rescue. I tried to use boot-repair and install bootloader on a seperate partition mounted to /boot and still my system is booting and it still shows grub-rescue. The error which my system shows during boot is: Error : no such device : 04ac0510-bd4f-43b8-b885-b885-11c4dec21db8 I am not dual booting and ubuntu is the only OS I am installing. I am using Raid 0 with two blue western digital hard drive so I am not sure whether it is right or not. The details given by boot-repair are in the below mentioned link; http://paste.ubuntu.com/1147208/ Afterwards, I made one more change I installed ubuntu again and this time I installed the bootloader at a different partition on /boot. After this the bootloader error has gone but I am still not able to boot to ubuntu as I get the same error I was getting before. I have not installed dmraid, I feel it is neccessary for Raid0, but I thought ubuntu already has Raid drivers. Moreover in the dmraid installation instructions for 12.04, I used the one for 10.04 and selected to install bootloader at the partitions from the dropdown. This time the installation finished normally without an error but still I am not able to boot my system as the same error shows during booting this time also. Now I am stucked and I have no clue on how I can boot my system. Please tell me how can I boot my system.

• Enjoy Seamless Reading at Twitter in Chrome

  Twitter can be a lot of fun but having to constantly use the More Button to view a large number of tweets is frustrating. All that you need to be rid of that frustration is the More Tweets! extension for Google Chrome. Before Here it is…the classic “More Button”. If you are only interested in viewing a few tweets on occasion then it is not a problem. But if you are looking at a large number of tweets on a daily basis then it can be very frustrating. Notice the last tweet from TinyHacker shown here… After After installing the extension the only thing that you will need to do is refresh your Twitter page if you had it open before-hand. Now there will be a seamless connection from page to page when you are reading through tweets. You can see the TinyHacker tweet from above followed oh so nicely by tweets from the second page…this is definitely an improvement. For those who may be curious if you are quick enough with your mouse you can see what the “automated connection process” looks like. • Black screen on login, can get thru decrypt disk and access command line but no GUI

  Running 12.04 64 bit fresh alternative install, with disk crypto on a new Lenovo laptop Install didn't connect and install modules, even though I had the network cable plugged in and don't have any whacky proxy settings. I had to manually install ubunut-desktop and define sources after initial installation, so this seemed a bit weird (ISO matched MD5 sum though) I unplug the network cable, otherwise I get a black screen that I can do nothing with. So I turn laptop on, I have disk encryption, I type in the password at the Ubuntu decryption GUI then get "set up successfully" message "Waiting for network configuration ..." then "Waiting for up to 60 more seconds for network configuration" At this stage (a) If I wait for it then I get a black screen that I can do nothing with. (b) If I interrupt the process by pressing escape, then I break through to the command line. From the command line, I can go ahead and login, then plug my network cable in to do apt-get commands. As a precaution I do some house keeping which takes a few mins to run: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade Running startx to get to the GUI gives: Fatal server errror: no screens found The .Xauthority file is being created in my home directory but it's empty. I review my order and note the system graphics: Intel HD Graphics (WWAN or mSATA capable) So it's weird that I can't get to the Gnome. It looks like drivers aren't working. Is there a way of getting Intel drivers from the command line? Or do you have any other suggestions on what to try next?

• Raleigh theme on LightDM, Ubuntu desktop, Nautilus window, menus & menu-bars

  After performing an upgrade from Natty to Oneiric, I had a problem similar to the one reported in here at every system boot: Desktop forgets theme? Everything, from the LigthDM greeter to the ubuntu desktop used the ugly raleigh theme, apart from firefox, thunderbird few other applications after logging in. Unfortunately none of the solutions suggested in the topic above worked for me. The only way I could get acceptable appearance would be to switch to gnome at login and using the Adwaita theme. The lightdm greeter still uses the raleigh theme though. Unfortunately, I tried some "brute-force" methods by reinstalling (sudo apt-get install --reinstall) ubuntu-desktop, unity, unity-common, unity-greeter, gnome-session, gtk2-engines. I also tried moving .config, .gconf, .gconfd, .gnome, .gnome2 to a backup dir to reset account desktop preferences. None of the above solved the issue. On the contrary, logging-in to Ubuntu setup does not show unity and window decorations anymore. My fallback remains the Gnome logon and the Adwaita theme. This is my workstation machine I am hosting Ubuntu on, so, though possible, it is time consuming to perform a backup and format-reinstall ubuntu 11.10. Could you please let me know if I can get an alternative way of repairing my ubuntu desktop? (I believe it all started when, during the 11.04-to-11.10 upgrade, the installation of downloaded packages for oneiric broke when nautilus-dropbox failed to access the dropbox servers - I am behind a proxy but with proper proxy settings had no problems using apt-get & synaptic. However I removed dropbox and resumed partial installation on second boot.)

• Securing ClickOnce hosted with Amazon S3 Storage

  Well, since my post on hosting ClickOnce with Amazon S3 Storage, I've received quite a few emails asking how to secure the deployment. At the time of this post I regret to say that there is no way to secure your ClickOnce deployment hosted with Amazon S3. The S3 storage is secured by ACL meaning that a username and password will have to be provided before access. The Amazon CloudFront, which sits on top of S3, allows you to apply security settings to your CloudFront distribution by Applying an encryption to the URL. Restricting by IP. The problem with the CloudFront is that the encryption of the URL is mandatory. ClickOnce does not provide a way to pass the "Amazon Public Key" to the CloudFront URL (you probably can if you start editing the XML and HTML files ClickOnce generate but that defeats the porpose of ClickOnce all together). What would be nice is if Amazon can allow users to restrict by IP addresses or IP Blocks. I'd sent them an email and received a response that this is something they are looking into...I won't hold my breadth though. Alternative I suggest you look at Rack Space Cloud hosting http://www.rackspacecloud.com they have very competitive pricing and recently started hosting Windows Virtual Servers. What you can do is rent a virtual server, setup IIS to host your ClickOnce applications. You can then use IIS security setting to restrict what IP/Blocks can access your ClickOnce payloads. Note: You don't really need Windows Server to host ClickOnce. Any web server can do. If you are familiar with Linux you can run that VM with rackspace for half the price of Windows. • Game Components, Game Managers and Object Properties

  I'm trying to get my head around component based entity design. My first step was to create various components that could be added to an object. For every component type i had a manager, which would call every component's update function, passing in things like keyboard state etc. as required. The next thing i did was remove the object, and just have each component with an Id. So an object is defined by components having the same Ids. Now, i'm thinking that i don't need a manager for all my components, for example i have a SizeComponent, which just has a Size property). As a result the SizeComponent doesn't have an update method, and the manager's update method does nothing. My first thought was to have an ObjectProperty class which components could query, instead of having them as properties of components. So an object would have a number of ObjectProperty and ObjectComponent. Components would have update logic that queries the object for properties. The manager would manage calling the component's update method. This seems like over-engineering to me, but i don't think i can get rid of the components, because i need a way for the managers to know what objects need what component logic to run (otherwise i'd just remove the component completely and push its update logic into the manager). Is this (having ObjectProperty, ObjectComponent and ComponentManager classes) over-engineering? What would be a good alternative?

• Disable the Old Adobe Flash Plugin in Google Chrome

  If you’ve just updated to the Dev or Beta release of Google Chrome, you might have noticed that a special version of Adobe Flash is now integrated into the default distribution of Chrome. But what about your old plug-in? As it turns out, the old plug-in is generally still installed… but you can easily disable Chrome plug-ins in the latest version, so let’s get to work. Disable the Extra Flash Plug-in Head over to about:plugins and look through the list—you should notice two Shockwave Flash plugins. The first one should be in your Google Chrome installation folder, and has the filename gcswf32.dll. This is the NEW one, so don’t disable it! If you keep scrollling down, you’ll see the old one, with the file name NPSWF32.dll. This is the OLD plugin, and you can safely disable it. Of course, if you only use Chrome you could just completely uninstall Adobe Flash from your system by heading into Control Panel’s Uninstall Programs screen, and then finding and uninstalling Adobe Flash Player Plugin. The ActiveX version is for Internet Explorer. We’ve not done any testing to see if the old Flash plugin is even still active or not, but may as well disable it just to be sure, right? • Creating Transparent Game Menu Items using AndEngine

  I'm trying to create a Game Menu which contains some Menu Items like New Game Multiplayer Options Exit I want to make this Menu Items Transparent. Only Text in White color should be visible. • Move the Status Bar Web Address Display to the Address Bar

  Is the ability to see the addresses for weblinks the only reason that you keep the Status Bar visible? Now you can hide the Status Bar and move that address display to the Address Bar in Firefox. Before Here is the normal “Status Bar” address display for the weblink we were hovering the mouse over in our browser. That is nice but if you really prefer to keep the “Status Bar” hidden what do you do? Move that display to a better (and definitely more convenient) location. After Once you have the extension installed that is all there is to it…you are ready to go. Notice the address display in “Address Bar”. That is definitely looking nice. Just for fun we temporarily left the “Status Bar” visible as a demonstration while hovering over the link. And then with the “Status Bar” totally disabled…more screen real-estate is always a good thing. Note: The Status Address Bar extension does not show the original address behind shortened URLs. Conclusion If you are looking for an alternate way to see the address behind weblinks and acquire more screen real-estate, then the Status Bar extension will be a wonderful addition to your Firefox Browser. • Questions about XNA

  I've read tons of different threads about XNA, but I still have some questions. First of all: I have 2 years of experience programming and C# is my main language, so XNA would fit perfectly for me, but I have some concerns. People mentioned that C# has a performance loss compared to C++. Is this true? XNA only supports DirectX 9. I found the ANX framework which is pretty similar to XNA but it is capable of DirectX 11. Would this be a good alternative ? Because I'm worried about the performance loss of C#, I searched for a C++ framework and found SFML. It's based on C++ but can be integrated into C#. I already have some experience with UDK, but I am really interested in creating more by myself ( lighting physics etc ). I didn't start yet, what would you recommend me to use / learn ? I am going to create a first person shooter (3D) and I have plenty of time for this. My aim is realtime lighting, realtime global illumination, image-based reflections etc. I want to develop for Windows. Edit: I found something interesting: OpenTK. It supports the latest version of OpenGL which is on the same level as DX11 (if my knowledge is correct). It makes use of mono.

• Questioning pythonic type checking

  I've seen countless times the following approach suggested for "taking in a collection of objects and doing X if X is a Y and ignoring the object otherwise" def quackAllDucks(ducks): for duck in ducks: try: duck.quack("QUACK") except AttributeError: #Not a duck, can't quack, don't worry about it pass The alternative implementation below always gets flak for the performance hit caused by type checking def quackAllDucks(ducks): for duck in ducks: if hasattr(duck,"quack"): duck.quack("QUACK") However, it seems to me that in 99% of scenarios you would want to use the second solution because of the following: If the user gets the parameters wrong then they will not be treated like a duck and there will be no indication. A lot of time will be wasted debugging why there is no quacking going on until the user finally realizes his silly mistake. The second solution would throw a stack trace as soon the user tried to quack. If the user has any bugs in their quack() method which cause an AttributeError then those bugs will be silently swallowed. Once again time will be wasted digging for the bug when the second solution would simply give a stack trace showing the immediate issue. In fact, it seems to me that the only time you would ever want to use the first method is when: The block of code in question is in an extremely performance critical section of your application. Following the principal of "avoid premature optimization" you would only realize this of course, after you had implemented the safer approach and found it to be a bottleneck. There are many types of quacking objects out there and you are only interested in quacking objects that quack with a very specific set of arguments (this seems to be a very rare case to me). Given this, why is it that so many people prefer the first approach over the second approach? What is it that I am missing? Also, I realize there are other solutions (such as using abcs) but these are the two solutions I seem to see most often for the basic case.

• Encrypting a non-linux partition with LUKS.

  I have a non-Linux partition I want to encrypt with LUKS. The goal is to be able to store it by itself on a device without Linux and access it from the device when needed with an Ubuntu Live CD. I know LUKS can't encrypt partitions in place, so I created another, unformatted partition of the EXACT same size (using GParted's "Round to MiB" option) and ran this command: sudo cryptsetup luksFormat /dev/xxx Where xxx is the partition's device name. Then I typed in my new passphrase and confirmed it. Oddly, the command exited immediately after, so I guess it doesn't encrypt the entire partition right away? Anyway, then I ran this command: sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/xxx xxx Then I tried copying the contents of the existing partition (call it yyy) to the encrypted one like this: sudo dd if=/dev/yyy of=/dev/mapper/xxx bs=1MB and it ran for a while, but exited with this: dd: writing `/dev/mapper/xxx': No space left on device just before writing the last MB. I take this to mean the contents of yyy was truncated when it was copied to xxx, because I have dd'd it before, and whenever I have dd'd to a partition of the exact same size, I never get that error. (and fdisk reports they are the same size in blocks). After a little Googling I discovered all luksFormat'ted partitions have a custom header followed by the encrypted contents. So it appears I need to create a partition exactly the size of the old one + however many bytes a LUKS header is. What size should the destination partition be, no. 1, and no. 2, am I even on the right track here? UPDATE I found this in the LUKS FAQ: I think this is overly complicated. Is there an alternative? Yes, you can use plain dm-crypt. It does not allow multiple passphrases, but on the plus side, it has zero on disk description and if you overwrite some part of a plain dm-crypt partition, exactly the overwritten parts are lost (rounded up to sector borders). So perhaps I shouldn't be using LUKS at all?

  It’s interesting to see the debate caused by the iPhone debate over Flash.  In the new version of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement, Apple bans Flash and Monotouch: 3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited). I had a conversation recently about IE9 and people were asking why is Microsoft spending money and resources to build IE9 now that we have Silverlight.  It makes just no sense to put so much efforts to support HTML 5 in IE because it’s overlapping with Silverlight, no?  Well, what if Chrome became the dominant browser and all of a sudden, Google would remove the object tag?  Would Microsoft be in the same position as Adobe is right now on the iPhone? • Synaptic won't launch from menu in panel in fresh Lubuntu minimal desktop 12.04 install

  I performed a fresh install of Lubuntu 12.04 with minimal desktop, as described here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/MinimalInstall. To clarify, I did a command-line install from the Lubuntu alternative install disc, then I did an "apt-get install --no-install-recommends lubuntu-desktop". Everything is working fine, except that Synaptic will not run from the menu entry in the panel. I am not prompted for a password, and no window of any sort appears after clicking the menu entry. I installed lxshortcut to see what the shortcut was running, and the command is "synaptic-pkexec". If I type this command into the "Run" menu, I get the same behavior (or lack thereof). I can get Synaptic to open up just fine by typing "gksudo synaptic" at the "Run" menu. Also, if I run "synaptic-pkexec" from the terminal, then I am prompted for my password within the terminal, and after that Synaptic opens normally. Can someone please suggest the right way to get Synaptic working? I could just change the menu entry to "gksudo synaptic", but I'm guessing that it's set to "synaptic-pkexec" for a reason. I have a vague understanding that this pkexec business has something to do with PolicyKit, but I don't really know what PolicyKit is or how to tell if something is broken with it. Thanks.
